COMMUNITY CORNER
One bit of wisdom one gains as we continue to mature is the fact that often it’s best not to
wait. To plan ahead is a good thing! For example when it comes time to vote, if you
recently moved to Goodwin House, the address on your picture ID, to be presented at the
voting poll, has to be exactly the same as the one on the voting record…and I do mean exactly down to the
apartment or room number. Change of address needs to be done by the end of September. Monday,
October 15 is the final date to register to vote if you want to vote in November. Regardless of your party
choice, let’s make sure we all qualify! And remember, since GHBC is our precinct polling location, you
don’t even have to leave home to vote! The feature presentation in the auditorium on that day is “Stand up
(if you are able) and be counted!” (Seats are available.) Continued specific information regarding voting
will be available between now and November.
While planning ahead for vacations, be sure and let the front desk know of your departure and return
dates! If you will be gone five days or longer, you will get absence credit on your dining bill. Another,
even more important, reason is friends and relatives will know why they can’t find you or reach you
here. That newspaper you forgot to cancel could be a dead giveaway (in more ways than one). Please let
someone on your hall know when you will be away from home…and ask him/her to pick up your paper.
Also, while planning ahead, make sure you have a resident confidant on file with our Social Workers and
Health Clinic…who, in turn, will notify the front desk. Your confidant will be notified if you ever leave
the community because of an emergency. Anyone seeking information about your condition can get the
name of your confidant from the front desk. And while we are at it, make sure you have an updated copy
of your medical record on file with the Clinic. This information can then be available to the ambulance
staff and the hospital upon entry.
Enough “food for thought” for today. Just keep planning ahe

NEW RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT
Janet Smith moved from Falls Church into Crossroads apartment 1014. Janet grew up in Manassas and graduated from Osborn High School in 1957. She attended what was then known as Madison College for one year and then Bridgewater College for a year. She came home to Manassas and had the good fortune to run into her high school sweetheart at the county fair. They soon married and enjoyed 56 years together. Both worked for the CIA, but she later moved to the Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA) where she worked in the personnel office for 34 years. The couple greatly enjoyed traveling and took over 60 trips, many of which were to Europe. Italy was their favorite country to visit, but they also enjoyed a bus tour across the United States. Although she doesn't sew any more, Janet was a skilled seamstress and liked to make children’s clothes, which were then sent to Appalachia. She looks forward to exploring fitness activities at GHBC.

INTRODUCING THE “YOU GOT CAUGHT CARING” PROGRAM
Please fill out a comment form on an employee that comes to your
attention that stood out to you while caring for you and that you
appreciate! An employee that goes above and beyond. You may keep
your comments anonymous by leaving “Name of Person submitting
notice” blank. There will be two locations where the comment forms
and white/gray drop boxes will be, one in the main Resident Business Office
and second one in the Resident mailroom. Please have all forms
submitted by Thursday, August 2. I will compile a list based on your
comments and would like to distribute my findings to staff and residents.
The positive attitude the staff has towards the resident deserves to be
recognized, so let’s acknowledge them and their hard work.
Thank You, Justina.

CPE program is coming to a close. We invite you to join the graduation celebration on Friday, July 27,

Medical Center this summer. Students participate in the graduation celebration by sharing a “Gift” of
song, a reading, a skit, or something original that reflects what they are taking away from their learning
from CPE and their ministry with elders and others in their places of ministry. Please come and hear
what they are taking away from GH, and share your congratulations with them. Refreshments will be
served. We look forward to seeing you there!
S.O.S. … GREEN BOXES GONE MISSING! Where have our wonderful reusable green plastic
carry-out boxes gone? For nearly a decade these green boxes have been GHBC’s sustainable way for
residents to take meals to their apartments. Although they are expensive, using the green boxes is
economical, specifically because they are reusable. These remarkable boxes survive many months, even
years, in our kitchen’s heavy-duty dishwasher! But GHBC saves money only when we residents return
the carry-out boxes to the baskets in the yogurt room. At this moment, many boxes have gone missing,
and this could make the cost of using them prohibitive. Please check your cabinets and freezer and return
any wandering boxes to their rightful home: Dining Services.
