From the Chairman

Oh, boy! Warm weather, trees greening up, birds nesting, kids playing,

neighbors walking and lots of pol-len.

Well, forget oh boy on the pollen! Yes, spring is here in all of its glory!

We wish you all an enjoyable, ex-citing and fun filled spring season.

Get those tomatoes, peppers and onions in the ground. Let’s get the growing season on! Oh, and don’t forget to stay on top of your yard maintenance.

Everything seems to be growing fast, especially after the last couple of rain storms.

We are excited about our project to improve the roads within lower section of our community.

This has been a focus of your

ACC for quite some time now. Children are playing outside

more now with the longer daylight hours.

Please drive carefully and keep your speed down.

Don’t forget to use our website or email address if there are questions or issues you’d like the board to address.

Best Spring wishes to all our neighbors and thank you for your continued support.

If you haven’t started getting ready for the sale, it’s time to start going through your closets and storage areas. In past years, we’ve had a huge turnout of shoppers. We’re expecting the same kind of response this year and the sale is a great way to downsize and also make a few dollars. Your ACC will post a notice in the Centenni-al Record and place a large sign at both entrances. Feel free to post a sign in your yard to draw those eager shoppers in. The garage sale is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on May 21 and continue throughout the afternoon. Shoppers often begin arriving early, so if you’re up for it, feel free to start early and go later.

Arrangements have been made for the testing of RPZ valves with-in the West Winds community. Worley Plumbing will be in our neighborhood between May 2nd and May 6th to conduct testing. In order to take advantage of this opportunity, Residents must con-tact Worley Plumbing at 760-6300 and schedule an appointment. There is a $60.00 fee for the test. Annual RPZ valve testing is required by state law. Be sure that your RPZ valve is connected and

that your water has been turned on prior to the test. If your water needs to be turned on, call the City of Hot Springs at 321-6880.

We have had some complaints about dog poop in the neigh-borhood. Maybe you can come up with some text to address the issue. i.e. when walking your dog don’t forget to bring you doggie crap bag?? Be respectful of your neighbors don’t let your dogs run unchaperoned through the neigh-borhood. No one likes to walk through your pets dinner from the night before???

Over the years, the cost of owning drones have decreased signifi-cantly. Many drones that can be purchased by the general public on the market today can be had for as low as $100 to as high as $5,000.

If you’re thinking of getting a drone, the FAA has rules that regulate how they are to be used. For more information, visit the FAA website at https://www.faa.gov/uas/publications/model_air-craft_operators/ and The Know Before you Fly website at http://knowbeforeyoufly.org/

Westwinds welcomes pastor, school teacher

FFor Justy Smith, a new West Winds resident, preaching the word of God to others has been important in his life since age 16 when he be-

came a youth minister to 12 and 13-year-olds. Today, he is the minister at the Fountain of Life Church in Hot Springs, Ark.

“I started teaching a youth bible study,” Smith said. “Our church had a few young kids in it and I wanted to give them an opportunity to grow in the Lord. I liked the aspect of leading, teaching and helping.”

In 1999, the married father of two children, took bible classes during his freshman year at Ouachita Bap-tist University.

I was at a stage in my life when I really wanted to do something with purpose and value,” he said. “I then decided that I was going to be a youth pastor because I loved it.”

While a youth minister at his church, Smith began taking classes at Henderson University to become a teacher.

“I wanted to be a teacher so I can still work with kids and be a youth pastor,” he said.

After graduating in 2001, with a Bachelor of Science degree, he took long-term substitution work for the Lake Hamilton School District.

In the summer of 2002, Smith was offered a 5th grade position at the school. However, during that period at the age of 26-years-old, he became the senior pastor. The former pastor had to step down because of health reasons.

In addition to being the pastor of the church, Smith also serves as a chaplain for Hospice Homecare.

“I really got into it because I wanted to do more min-istry,” Smith said. “Until our church gets big enough to where it can support me, I have really enjoyed doing that. In fact, I enjoy doing hospice work so much, I will probably always have a foot in that door as long as they allow me. Even if it means I go only one or two days a week.”

For 16 years, Stephanie, Justy’s wife, has been a music teacher at the Lake Hamilton primary school where she teaches kindergarten and first grade students.

“I’m really, really happy, it’s a great school, really nice coworkers, I made a lot of friends and just met a lot of nice families and made some good connections with people over the years,” she said. “. I just love the little kids; they keep you young. They are very full of energy and keep you on your toes and just never a dull mo-ment so, that’s just my favorite.”

Stephanie said she enjoys living at West Winds.“I have never lived in a subdivision before,” she said.

“This is sort of a new experience for us and I love it. It’s so quiet and the location is great because everywhere we want to go, we are only about 10 minutes away and so it’s so nice.”

Boxing gym strives to instill confidence, pride in students

Boxing has many benefits including improved car-diovascular health, decreased stress and weight loss.In addition to the physical benefits, boxing can also instill confidence and discipline.

A new boxing gym located in Fountain Lake, Ark., is offering children and adults an opportunity to experi-ence those benefits.

Off-The-Hook boxing, a 501C3 non profit organiza-tion, is looking for more members of the community to discover the benefits of boxing.

Chad Wade, the owner of the gym, puts his own money into the organization, along with donations from members.

“My goal for the gym is to get it where it can sustain itself and become a valued part of the community for kids to have somewhere else to go,” Wade said.

Presently, the gym has 18 members who travel regu-larly to matches throughout Arkansas and neighboring states.

“We need money for travel, money for food, even

just competing in Arkansas every weekend requires gas money, food money for the kids,” he said.

On April 10, the training, traveling and competing lead to Chad’s 15-year-old son, Russell and gym mem-ber, 14-year-old Rodrigo Vasquez both winning the state tournament and qualifying for the Jr. Olympics.

“It makes me feel good to win, but there always more you can do,” Russell said.”But it feels good that you put in the hard work and you can achieve your goals.”

Before opening the gym, Wade volunteered as a boxing coach at the Hot Springs Boys & Girls Club where he and Willie McCoy, a retired Hot Springs po-lice captain, helped to bring the 2014 and 2015 Nation-al Title Boxing Championship Tournaments to the city.

More than 350 boxers from around the country, along with their families and friends came to the city for the tournament.

Wade will be helping the Boys & Girls Club Boxing Team sponsor the tournament for a third year which is scheduled for June 8-11.

“I’m estimating that his year, there will be more than 600 boxers coming to the tournment,” he said.

Off-The-Hook boxing gym is located at 3970 Park Ave,, in Fountain Lake. For more information on the gym or the Title Boxing tournament, call: (501) 318-7043 or visit http://www.offthehookboxfit.com/ and http://nationaltitleboxingchampionship.com/.
