What is MiPHY?
• The Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth is an anonymous, on line survey supported by the Michigan Department of Education and Community Health. The survey asks about behavior and attitude related to nutrition, physical activity, injuries, tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use. It also asks about sexual behaviors that cause AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy.
Purpose?
• Evaluation of the effectiveness of certain curricula and programming aimed at education and prevention of unhealthy choices.
• The school district is required to obtain and report this data for grant and funding purposes.
MiPHY details…
• The survey is anonymous and individual student results are not obtained or recorded.
• The survey takes most student about 20 minutes to complete.
• Students in grades 7, 9, and 11 take the survey every other year.
• Swan Valley piloted the survey in 2007, and then began administering it on the current cycle in 2008.
Categories included in the survey:
• Tobacco
• Alcohol and other drugs
• Violence
• Sexual behavior
• Physical activity, weight and nutrition
• Family and school domains
Parent opt out option….
• All parents receive a letter explaining the MiPHY survey prior to its administration.
• Parents who choose to have their son/daughter opt out can return a form that requests that their son/daughter not participate.– 2 individuals opted out this year
Validity of the results?
• This survey draws questions from other surveys that have “stood the test of time” including the Youth Risky Behavior Survey (YRBS) which is given nationally.
• This is a scientific survey; all questions are carefully selected and many responses from students are excluded from the report due to false reporting.
• 120 student responses were tabulated as part of this survey
