Diocesan Notice Regarding Flu Season Flu season is here. If you are sick, or think you

might be sick, or are concerned about contracting an

illness, you should refrain from receiving the Blood

of Christ. All should be assured that “since Christ is

sacramentally present under each of the species,

communion under the species of bread alone makes

it possible to receive all the fruit of Eucharistic

grace.” [Catechism, 1390]

REFLECTIONS & OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE

The Call for True Joy The readings call on us to enter the true joy of the Lord. At the last supper Jesus gave us the commandment to love

one another as He loves us, so that His joy might be in us. This is the joy that Jesus is calling us to in today’s Gospel.

He says Blessed are the humble, the peacemakers, the merciful and those who seek justice. Blessed is it to be joyous.

By learning from the Lord and relying in His love we are called to love one another and bring His joy to others. This is

the great work that our Catholic schools try to teach our children. In a Christian environment we help our children to

become disciples of Jesus Christ to live beautiful lives full of fruits of joy. We not only provide an environment where

are children our loved and supported in their growth but also are encouraged care for others. Let us continue to sup-

port our school. ~ Fr. Eduino

A representative from every ministry is invited to an All Ministry Meeting on February 26th

following the 11:00am Mass in St. John’s Hall.

Opportunity to Help the Homeless of Carmichael A Social Ministry Opportunity for OLA Parishioners: Help the Homeless in Carmichael. A new group working to

combat Homelessness in Carmichael has emerged in the last five months. The Carmichael Homeless Assistance Re-

source Team (HART) is a motivated group composed of the faith, non-profit and business communities working on

short and long term goals to address homelessness in our community. Father Eduino has asked that members of our

parish work with Carmichael HART.

One of HART’s major short-term strategies is to provide Winter Sanctuaries, hosted by various churches to house the

homeless one night at a time during the winter season. HART has made a request for OLA's help. Christ Community

Church (5025 Manzanita Avenue) is hosting a number of sanctuaries and has asked OLA to provide volunteers for the

evening of Thursday, February 2nd through the early morning of Friday, February 3rd. Christ Community Church

would appreciate a total of 20 volunteers to serve different shifts from 4:30pm - 6:30am. Shifts will vary from 2 to 6

hours duration and will include meal prep, hospitality and serving, night and overnight shifts, and a morning team.

Volunteers are particularly needed for the late evening and early morning hours. February 2nd is around the corner

and we would like to start confirming volunteers as soon as possible. If you are interested in this social ministry oppor-

tunity and learning more about Carmichael HART, please contact OLA parishioner and Pastoral Council President,

Juan Yniguez at: [email protected] or 207-9512 or go to: https://www.facebook.com/HARTCarmichael.

Finding Happiness in Poverty “Blessed are the poor in spirit…” This concept, as well as others presented in the Beatitudes we hear at Mass today,

don’t always make sense according to our society. After all, in our modern world, we have many things that make our

lives easier, more efficient, and even allow us to spread the Gospel in ways undreamt of even 50 years ago. The world

provides us many ways that it deems acceptable to obtain happiness. Why seek out poverty, then? Perhaps we don’t

understand what poverty, or happiness, really means.

While it may not sound positive to our ears, the first Beatitude, “Blessed are the poor in spirit”, simply means that we

must turn to God in all that we do. To be poor in spirit, we need rely not on our own strengths and qualities, but rather

we need to rely completely and totally on God. In this sense, spiritual poverty is a good thing: it is a life lived out in

humility and trust in the Lord, a life that results in a true and lasting happiness. Being poor in spirit, and living out all

nine Beatitudes, is the “vocation of all the faithful” according to the Catechism; in other words, the Beatitudes provide

a roadmap to living out our lives to our fullest potential as human beings and achieving true happiness.

Happiness according to the world is not the same as happiness according to God and the deepest realities of the human

heart. Saint Augustine reminds us that “we all want to be happy. No one in the whole human race would deny that he

wants to be happy, even if he is not sure what to be happy means.” We have, however, the instructions for a fulfilling

and happy life right in front of us. With the help of the Beatitudes, and especially living a life of humility and striving

to be poor in spirit, we can, and will, obtain a happiness beyond our wildest dreams.

For reflection:

What are some ways that I seek happiness in my life that don’t necessarily lead to lasting happiness?

How can I better live out the Beatitudes (Matt. 5:1-12) in my daily life? ~ Dean Marshall, OLA Seminarian

Christian Meditation Group

In an age of rush and noise, it is essential that we find time to be still and quiet. “Be still and know that I am

God,” says the Psalmist. In this prayer of silence called Christian Meditation we find God who dwells in our

own heart. And, in finding Him, we find our own selves and are renewed. We regularly meet Mondays at

7:30pm in our School Library. Please call Fran at 488-4229 for more information.

OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION SCHOOL

Diocesan Speech Contest 2017

Lilly O’Gara, Student at Our Lady of the Assumption School One of my favorite church songs is “Go Make a Difference” by Steve Angrisano. In this hymn, Steve writes

“We are the hands of Christ, reaching out to those in need.” The song calls us to go out in the world and make

something happen. They explain that we are God’s children, and we are called to serve those in need. When our

school sings “Go Make a Difference” we are empowered to do just that. It brings out Christ in all of us. Joy

fills all the children. At our school we are so inspired by this powerful message, we even clap along during the

chorus. The song “Go Make a Difference” goes along with what Pope Francis said at World Youth Day. Pope

Francis calls us to be ready and willing to make our mark on the world. Apathy won’t change the world. We all

can and should do better. God created us to do good, not wait for others to do good for us. As faithful children

of God, we should all leave a mark of our own.

Many important and saint like people left their mark by standing up for people or showing extreme courage

when they believe in something. For example, Dr. Eugene Lazowski saved thousands of Jewish lives during the

holocaust. He created a fake epidemic out of a dangerous disease. To stop other people from catching the dis-

ease, German soldiers did not send them to dangerous concentration camp. Eugene risked his own life to save

thousands of others. Even if we all can’t save lives like Dr. Eugene Lazowski did, we can all make a difference

in our own small but special ways.

That is a lesson I learned in 2nd grade. I was only seven years old but heard the call to make a difference. I do-

nated my hair to a foundation that makes wigs for sick children that have lost their hair due to medications. I

wanted to give back after just receiving First Communion. I thought it was very sad that children, just like me,

were not only very sick but also lost their hair. Since then I have donated my hair two more times. I strive to

bring happiness and joy to those around me. A former teacher at our school bestowed the value of service in my

class. She helped many third world countries and people with hardly anything. Because of her, I have participat-

ed in fundraisers for third world countries. I have also volunteered at carnivals for people staying at the Ronald

Mc Donald house. Most people that attend are very sick themselves or have a very sick family member. At the

carnivals they get to play games and have a good time. I really enjoyed bringing some happiness to them. I have

done these things and more in just 14 years.

Finally, I can prepare for my future my making a difference in people’s lives now. I will make a difference in

the present and I certainly will make a difference in the future. We should all be a voice for those suffering in-

justices and spread the Good News of the Gospel. I will leave my mark by doing good for others. The details of

our future are certainly not set. But, I am sure through God’s grace that we can change if not one person’s life

we can change the world. The time is now… we must follow the instructions of Pope Francis and Steve Angri-

sano by going out and making a difference.

““Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the king-

dom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3

This one confuses people. Replace the word “humble”

for “poor” and it makes more sense. People that are

humble recognize their dependence on God and trust

that He will provide all that they need. Unfortunately,

for many of us, pride and ego enters our lives and we

think we can live without God. Remember – God first

in all circumstances.
