On the first Sunday of Lent the temptation of Jesus recalls the temptation of every human being since the beginning. On this second Sunday of Lent the transfiguration of Jesus holds out the transformation in glory which is the goal of every human hope. The transfigured Jesus, however, models not only the goal of the Christian but also our ongoing life. The passage forms a fitting climax to the instruction on discipleship which immediately precedes it (Luke 9:23-27). First of all, Luke emphasizes that Jesus’ transfiguration took place “while he was praying,” an action integral to Christian life (cf. Luke 18:1). Secondly, he speaks with Moses and Elijah concerning his exodos, his transit to the Father through death, resurrection, and exaltation, which is announced in the first passion prediction (Luke 9:22). The disciples also are called to take up the cross and follow Jesus in order to arrive at life. Then they will see the glory of the Son of Man and of the Father (9:23-27). This appearance is a foretaste of that glory. Finally, at the transfiguration the voice from the cloud, heard at Jesus’ baptism, is heard again, this time commanding, “Listen to him.” The disciples are those who “listen to the word of God and keep it.” Thus we see in the transfigured Jesus both the goal and the way. We must not confuse the one for the other. The transfiguration marks only a temporary halt in the journey to Jerusalem, only a pause in this exodus. We who follow Jesus must continue to the end, strengthened by the glorious hope to which we are called. PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defence against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell, Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

TODAY’S READINGS:

Every year the first two Sundays of Lent present the whole gamut of human existence, the whole range of the history of salvation. On the first Sunday of Lent the

MAINTAINING A PRAYERFUL ENVIRONMENT

NB: Confessions: Lighting: ‘green’= priest is available but ‘red’ = Confessional is occupied. Please leave the door open when exiting as it controls the light.

Boys & Men: No Hats in Church! This is more than mere etiquette but rather a sign of respect. So, Even in inclement weather, according to Canon Law, men are not to wear hats in Church (except, of course, for a serious medical condition). This custom is based on 1Corinthians 11:4 which states that men must not cover their heads when in prayer; for this would be “dishonouring the Lord.” Zenit (The Vatican)(March 5,2013) states “… For the laity the overall rule is that men keep their heads uncovered.”

SIT/STAND”: [Universal Practise] The new St. Joseph Sunday Missal on Page 21 states that the priest first prays: (SIT) “Pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Father Almighty”, then the people STAND and respond “May the Lord accept …”

Taking up the Collection Procedure- for Ushers and for Parishioners to know (so they can be ready): 6 Ushers come before the Altar and Bow- The first 2- go to the North Left Transept Bay- the second 2 go to the front of the Left (North) Centre Aisle- the third 2 go to the South (Right) Transept Bay. At the same row on either end the pairs collect together from the front pew to the back. After the Transepts- the same ushers go to the Window Bay on either side; North Transept to North Window Bay; South Transept to the South window Bay. And when the second 2 have finished the back of the Centre (North) Aisle they return to the Front and collect on the other side, i.e., the Right (South) Centre Aisle Bay and go down each aisle together at each end. Thank you for a slow methodical procedure- again- there is no rush: “take your time” to go to every person. Thanks.

Stewardship Reflection

2nd SUNDAY OF LENT

“I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the

Chaldeans to give you this land as a

possession.” (Genesis 15:7) Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether your home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do you show your gratitude to God for the home He has given you? Do you make a sacrifice of any kind? Do you return any of your finances to God, investing equally in your eternal home just as you invest in your earthly home?

OUTSIDE THE PARISH

On the weekend of April 5 - 7, there will be a

Vocation Live-In for boys or young men interested in the priesthood or the consecrated life, at the Seminary of Christ the King, Mission, BC. For more information call 604-826-8715.

2nd SUNDAY OF LENT

SUNDAY, MARCH 17, 2019

Prayers of the Faithful:

1 For the holy Church of God, that pastors and people will always

listen to the beloved Son as they journey on their pilgrim way, let

us pray to the Lord.

2. For the leaders of our nation, that they may transform the lives of

people by wise and prudent decisions, let us pray to the Lord.

3 For all who believe, that the transfigured Christ will strengthen the

hope of a glorious resurrection of our bodies, let us pray to the

Lord.

4. For those trapped in the darkness of sin, that the light shining in

Christ may free them and bring them to God’s favor, let us pray to

the Lord.

5. That our young people thoughtfully consider a vocation to the

Priesthood or Consecrated Life, let us pray to the Lord.

6. For the end to abortion and euthanasia, let us pray to the Lord.

7. For the intentions close to our heart (pause for 5 seconds), let us

pray to the Lord.
