An Act of Spirit al Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive

You in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Our Parish Mission Statement The Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Concep on and Assump on of Our Lady

is a Eucharis c community: glorifying the Father, united with the Son, led by the Holy Spirit and protected by Mary. We are called to pray,

educate and serve God’s people in this life and in the hope of eternal life.

Today is the “Sunday of Divine Mercy.” The Catholic Church has been celebra ng this feast for the last 21 years ever since the Va -can made it official on April 30 in the Jubilee year 2000. Divine Mercy Sun-day was ins tuted to bring fallen away Catholics and hardened sinners back to His love and, therefore, toward salva on. Jesus le all the details in a diary that He commanded Saint Faus na to write in the 1930s. To get this great promise, one has to go to Confession and then receive Holy Communion within 10 days around the Feast of Di-vine Mercy, which has now been called Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the whole Church. Jesus said, “Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment” (Diary, 300). To receive Commun-ion worthily, one should be in the state of grace and without serious sin. Today, how many receive Holy Communion with souls stained with mortal sins? When a person receives the true Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus in Holy Communion without first going to Confession to cleanse their souls, that soul is going even deeper into sin. Many feel that their sins are unforgivable, but Jesus said, “Were a soul like a decaying corpse, so that from a human standpoint, there would be no hope of restora on and everything would already

be lost, it is not so with God. The miracle of Divine Mercy restores that soul in full. In the Tribunal of

Mercy (the sacrament of Confession), the greatest miracles take place and are incessantly repeated" (Diary, 1448). "Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy” (Diary 1602). Every sin imaginable could be forgiven by Him! On the evening of His resurrec on, Jesus appeared to His Apostles and the first thing that He did was to give them the power to forgive sins (John 20:19-31). This is done through the power of the Holy Spirit. For sure, it was not the

Lord’s inten on just for the Apostles to forgive sins but rather for that power to be passed down through the Holy Spirit to the priests of today. That is why Confession is so much an upli ing experi-ence; we are actually receiving heavenly graces and the forgiveness of sins from the Lord Himself! Most people have not spent much me thinking about the future. Some might think that they are brilliant and successful in this life, but what is that as compared to eternity? If you really want to be wise, think about where you are going to spend eternity. Remember these words of Jesus, “I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially poor sinners. On that day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open.” So let us wake up, repent of our sins, and bask in the glory of our Risen Lord Jesus!

Nex Weekend’s Readings Third Sunday of Easter, Year B

Reading I: Acts 3: 13-15, 17-19 Peter’s use of several honored tles of God in the Old Testament shows that he is a true Israelite speaking to his own in this sermon, and he urges them to repent and be converted to Christ. Reading II: I John 2: 1-5a Jesus is our true Advocate should we fall into sin. Paul tells us that “to know God” means keeping His commandments. The Gospel: Luke 24: 35-48 Several themes of Luke’s gospel come to-gether in this last sec on. Such are table fellowship, God’s promises fulfilled in Je-sus; forgiveness of sins; witnessing; the Ho-ly Spirit; Jesus’ journey to the Father is complete.

Parish News and Events

By Joseph Vesey Every year, my family and I usually go into New York City to see the tree and walk around. It is a day that we all look forward to. Unfortunately, because of Covid and me being high risk because of my asth-ma, we couldn’t go and walk around this year. So instead, my whole family drove down and did a vir-tual tour of the city without ge ng out of our car. It was really cool to see all the fa-mous sights. One thing that wasn’t cool to see was the number of homeless people living on the streets. There were so many of them, and some even had their pets with them. It was awful and it really upset me to think that people had to actually live like that. Some of these people slept on cardboard boxes on the streets and carried around their clothes in shopping bags. I couldn’t imagine having to live like that and how bad homeless people must feel to not have a place to call home. I started thinking about all the things that I have that I take for granted: a nice house, fresh food to eat, a big comfortable bed, nice clothes, and cool electronics to play with. I felt guilty for having so much and not apprecia ng it when there were so many people that had nothing. So, I started to think of how I could help and came up with the idea of dona ng some clothes and making some sandwich-es. I had my Dad and Mom give me all the clothes that we were planning on dona ng to Goodwill.

Instead of bringing them there, I went through everything and sorted them into individual bags. I also made peanut bu er and jelly sandwiches and put them into bags with bagged chips and fruit. Two weeks a er our first visit, we drove back into New York City with clothes and food to hand out. There were a lot of homeless people along

Madison and Park Avenues which was really strange since there are so many expensive stores on those streets. Anyway, we main-tained social distance but told them we had food and clothes. The look of thanks on their faces was unbelievable. I couldn’t be-lieve how much they appreciated what we did, even though it was just ge ng some clothes together and making sandwiches. I then thought back to what my mom

always says about small acts of kindness going a long way. I s ll felt sad that these people were s ll homeless, but I felt really happy and proud of my-self for trying to help them feel be er. I told my parents that I definitely want to go down to the city at least a few more mes during the spring and summer and bring more food and clothes. The next me, I am even going to write a note telling them not to give up hope and that there are people that care about them like me, and of course, I’ll remind them that Jesus is watching over them and that they can always pray and talk to Him if they are scared. I hope, one day, that every per-son and animal has a home of their own.

If you have ever seen or been part of a Bap sm at either of our churches, you may have no ced the Priest place a white bib on the infant. These bibs are lovingly made by two volunteers in our Parish. Ann Carroll is one of these volunteers and has con-tributed her sewing talent for many years to hand embroider a gold cross on each bib. Unfortunately, Ann is moving out of the Parish so we are looking for another person to share their embroidery skills

and be part of this gi to our newest parishioners. A simple chain s ch is all you need to know how to do, and a willingness to par cipate is all that is required! If you think you may be interested, please call Fr. Sorgie at the Parish Office, or Bernade e Versace (914) 961-5084. Good luck, Ann, in your new home and our sin-cerest and most hear elt thanks for all your help with this over the years!

275. “Why is Easter on a different date every year?” Unlike feasts such as Christmas, Easter is a movable holiday -- here's why. Easter is a movable feast — its date varies from one year to the next. This can be quite troublesome in terms of prac cality, but it’s also an occasion to remind ourselves that Chris an prac ces are rooted in Jewish tradi on. Before becoming a Chris an holiday, Passover was an Old Testament feast that originally celebrated nature. In a nomadic culture, the year began in Spring. People greeted the lambing season that ensured the future of the flock and the prosperity of the clan. In sedentary, rural socie es, the year began in the Fall, the beginning of the agricultural cycle, when people celebrated the first sheaves of wheat. This was the feast of Unleavened Bread, ini ally dis nct from Passover. It serves as a back-ground for the Book of Exodus, the great epic recoun ng the departure from Egypt and the crossing of the Red Sea. The 14th of Nisan (“the first month”) became the na onal holiday. The Jewish calendar is a lunisolar calendar: corresponding to 12 months (29 or 30 days) of the lunar cycle, plus an extra month from me to me that readjusted the year to the solar cycle. Chris ans followed the Julian calendar. Actually, un-der Julius Caesar, Rome switched from a 10-month year (355 days), which began in March, to our year of 12 months (365 days), star ng on January 1. So Chris an Easter did not coincide with Jewish Passover, all the more so because people did not commemorate the exact date of the Resurrec on but the Sunday closest to it. The day that previously began the week became Sunday: dies dominicalis (the Lord’s Day). But the Orthodox world has not aligned itself with the Gregorian calendar. S ll, everyone respects the same rule decreed at the Council of Nicaea: Easter is the Sun-day following the first full moon occurring either on or a er Spring equinox (March 21).

Help Other People Eat (HOPE) Feed Those in Need at this Difficult Time
