March signals a very exciting time in our TCS calendar. Twenty-nine years ago, on March 10, Joe and I officially opened our doors as a school and tutorial service. We had enrolled one student, Ken, and two weeks later, we enrolled Hugh. Both students were sophomores and both were in need of a safe place to grow. I was the only teacher. Joe kept his job teaching at another school so we would have some income! By early June we had enrolled four additional young men and were primed for growth! I had traded in my beloved Karmann Ghia for a Volkswagen van so we could take the students to the park and water falls for PE and to community sites for lessons in banking, investing, shopping and such. We were a close little group that year! The following year our enrollment doubled…a pattern we would follow for the next several years. We eventually added another teacher and another and another…we had classes in careers, drama, culinary arts and low ropes from day one. Some days I drive onto our current campus and am in disbelief at the scope and impact of TCS over the decades. Of course Joe and I are in awe of the changes over the years and deeply grateful to the staff, parents, students and community friends who have lifted us up along the way. Being able to expand our classroom space, add a state of the art media center, build a gym and occupy this incredibly beautiful wooded campus were the direct results of lots of other creative and generous folks joining the TCS mission. Beyond the structural and programmatic changes, however, lies the constancy of our student profiles, parent partnerships and annual victories and glorious outcomes! From day one we attracted intelligent, capable, creative students who had not found a school home where they could relax, blossom and succeed. Beyond our academic offerings, the extra curriculars and electives were the product of staff and student requests and identified talents. Once we realized how important sports and arts were to the development of the total child, we wanted to offer as many as we could. We still have that goal. Since neither Joe nor I had ever attended an independent school, we did not know all the ropes. We began with a business plan that did not count on donations for our livelihood. We hired professionals who were good at their job and had a heart for each student. We created a system that could shift with student needs rather than asking the student to bend to the school’s needs. We realized, along the way, that our approach was not the traditional independent school approach, but it worked well for our families, so there have been no regrets. We certainly have learned along the way and benefited from the mentoring of our companion school administrators, but we appreciate the differences among our fellow schools. As we approach this twenty-ninth anniversary, celebrate with us! Celebrate the Spirit of the child who learns differently. Celebrate the resilience of the ever hopeful student who continues to try when others would have given up. Celebrate the sacrifices of loving parents/families whose dreams for their child do not dim, regardless of the obstacles. Celebrate the promise that every new born brings with them into this world. Celebrate the generosity and skills of dedicated teachers who know that each child can succeed. Celebrate the hearts of coaches who understand that it is not a final score that determines a winner. Celebrate the gifts of a community that embraces its youth and encourages each unique being. Celebrate our community that fosters Excellence and Pride!

From the Counseling Team:

Standardized testing will begin March 17, 2014 for both Middle and High

School students. TCS will administer the Stanford 10 on the following

dates:

Middle School: March 17-20 & March 24-25, 2014

Make Up Day- March 26, 2014

High School: March 17-20, 2014

Make Up Day- March 24, 2014

New or returning parents who have questions about our testing program such

as why we do it, how we use the information, or when test results are made

available to students and parents, may contact your respective counselor for

discussion. Please emphasize the importance of these test results with your

student. They in no way have any impact on their individual course grades

nor are they a factor used for promotions from grade to grade, however

they nonetheless need to reflect the student’s best effort. Please

encourage them to take these tests seriously.

**Please be sure that your student gets plenty of rest, eats a

well-balanced breakfast, is here on time on the days of testing

and brings a calculator.**
