Joe and I have really enjoyed the notes and Facebook comments with congratulations for the 28th anniversary of TCS. Alumni, current parents and community members have all sent their best wishes. It is hard to believe that it has been so long. In some ways we feel the school has been here forever and in other ways, we are still at the beginning. Little has really changed in the format and the mission. We are still working on building the state of the art facilities our students and staff deserve. We have alumni who are well into their careers and families, yet Joe and I can still remember them as enthusiastic, somewhat awkward teens! We love our veteran staff who have been an integral part of all TCS has become. Laura Finnell has been here almost from the start. Her history is followed by a quarter of our teaching staff who have been with us 10 years or more. What a treasure it is to have such a firm fabric of commitment and knowledge that is the underpinning of our growth. Our Board of Directors continues to be our guiding voice. We have members in that auspicious group who go back over ten years! They understand our mission, our strengths and our struggles and have provided a steady hand and heart through the years. Joe and I are grateful for the leadership, talent and generosity of the entire community who have embraced our students and contributed to fulfilling our mission year after year. Twenty years ago, Joe and I invited a young daughter of our friends to come to TCS. She was experiencing stress and frustration at her large school. Her grades had fallen. She lost her place on the sports teams she loved. She began to doubt her abilities and her value. Testing indicated she had mild ADHD but her school performance indicated a much bleaker situation. Once she enrolled she began to soar. She succeeded academically, joined the athletic teams she enjoyed, led a number of clubs, and was a joy to be around. Her natural organizational skills emerged and she helped her peers stay on track. After she graduated she continued to set the pace for others. Married, with two children, she taught exercises classes, produced an exercise video, and became a resource for healthy products, Lamaze instruction and other positive life choices. After moving to Chicago, she enrolled in nursing school and last week graduated with her Nursing Degree! She continues to be the positive, energetic and inspirational young lady that Joe and I knew so many years ago. Of course, since her parents, Phil and Anne Parker, are friends of ours and continue to work at TCS, we can stay in touch with Jennifer. However, when we hear from alumni with whom we are not so connected, the story is the same…their successes continue! That’s the best Birthday gift Joe and I could ask for!
