Last week’s victorious performance by the TCS Cross Country Team highlights one of the strongest benefits that our school program offers. If you have not read the write up by Head XC Coach, Allen McAdams, please take a minute and go to our website. Although it is a stirring account of athletic prowess, this account is more than that. The courage, determination, talent and consistency evidenced in the team’s performance can be seen throughout each day in every aspect of the TCS experience. Let’s back up the clock to when each of these students, and actually, every TCS student enrolled. Who could have predicted that any of them would have risen to such athletic heights and garnered such richly deserved accolades in those early months of enrollment? Where did they learn to set a goal and run, undeterred, toward the finish line, whether it is an actual finish line or a project, paper or plan? When did they become accustomed, in fact invigorated, by the discomfort of their all-out effort to achieve that goal? Anyone who has observed a Cross Country meet knows that there is pain, disappointment and physical stress that accompanies every activity. Successful runners see those qualities as fueling their desire to continue their quest. They have practices day after day, in rain, cold and heat, to prepare for their contests. Where did that determination and sacrifice come from? Anyone who knows students who struggle with their learning and social issues knows that these are quite often students prone to avoidance, low frustration levels and diminished expectations. What is the catalyst that transforms many of them, especially TCS students, to reverse that trend? Switch our focus to last week’s GISA Drama Contest. As always, our Drama Class prepared and performed at the regional contest. As schools go, we are small, with a limited performing arts program and students who are venturing into this arena for the first time. However, every year, our students garner accolades. We have yet to win the competition, and in fact, don’t expect that. However, we never come home empty handed either. We consistently outshine schools with far more experience and program accouterments. This year’s comments from the judges were complimentary, even glowing! This year James Dorsey, a first time Drama participant, came away with Honorable Mention for Best Performance. The play was edgy, with dramatic intensity and comedic relief. It was not a fluff piece by any account. Like Cross Country, the hours of preparation and the time spent outside of the comfort zone of the participants is significant! Sometimes it is easier to see the truth when it is visually highlighted in high action format. The subtleties of the accomplishments and highly honed goal setting skills that TCS students develop is often overlooked in a classroom or social setting. At TCS, we believe that each student comes with the capacity to succeed and to excel. The process of helping them discover and develop their skills requires teamwork, patience and consistency! The TCS staff possesses a deep and wide culture of encouragement, skill building and role modeling. Our students benefit from that culture every day!
