Love this cool crisp weather! The smell of autumn fills the morning air and then the bright Georgia sun comes out to warm our afternoons! Our kids seem to respond positively to this weather as well. I am greeted with smiles and sweet hellos each morning as we cross paths. The next few weeks are filled with the excitement of the upcoming holidays! We will keep our calendar posted so you are aware of events and special activities coming up. Don’t miss a thing! Last week we hosted the Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools annual heads meeting. This group of headmasters from the greater Atlanta Area has been meeting together for decades and has grown into an extremely diverse and collegial team. When Joe and I joined in the 80’s, we welcomed the resources that other heads provided, but schools that were set aside for students who learned differently were somewhat isolated. Not only was there rampant misunderstanding of the true nature of learning disabilities, but the perception of other educators was that the level of academic abilities of LD students was less than their peers. Fast forward twenty years and we now have an excellent independent school environment that shares resources and respects the individual learner. For many of the headmasters who attended, this was their first visit to our campus. The meeting topic was the newly refined Mandatory Reporting system for child abuse. We will be offering training for our volunteers in the next few months. We hosted a dinner catered by our friends at Buca de Beppo. Many of the heads of school had sent previous students our way and were thrilled to finally see the campus they had heard so many success stories about. Earlier this week we were graciously offered a visit by renowned Native American educator and motivational speaker, Jim Sawgrass. I hope your teen told you a bit about his presentation and message! Not only does he do a brilliant job of connecting students with our past but he also sends a message of global citizenry and multi-cultural cooperation. Our campus was enthralled by his program. We are grateful for his offer to share his knowledge and talents with us! This week we hosted “The Big Thank You” to offer our deep appreciation for those corporations, agencies and individuals who contribute to our TCS community every year. From donated goodies, to shared space, we have a lot of folks who expand the experience our students and staff can have and help us stay within our budget! We live in a very generous community. The breakfast was well attended and provided good information about The Cottage School, its mission and its students! Our businesses and local agencies love to help students who are committed to creating positive futures for themselves and offering a helping hand to others. The TCS students certainly fit that bill! It always feels good to say Thank YOU!
THANK YOU

“RosWall Mosaic Day” was a success!
On a beautiful sunny day last Saturday, the Middle School Ceramics class students and a few other students, parents,
friends, and staff came to install new glazed pieces on the “RosWall” along Forrest St. behind the Cultural Arts Center.
TCS Coordinators Phil and Katja, and Kathy Lenoir from ROAR (Roswell Arts Renaissance) were pleased to also have
Morgan Timmis (Mgr., City of Roswell’s Historic & Cultural Affairs) attend and place some pieces on the wall.
RosWall started several years ago and has grown into a long, colorful mosaic retaining wall approximately 150’ long.
Both Middle and High School will be creating more new pieces to install sometime next spring. Please drive by to take a
look and be amazed. The dedication and hard work put into this timeless progression of art adds beauty to Roswell.
The 150’-long “RosWall” is located along Forrest
St., near the City of Roswell’s Cultural Arts Center.
The team prepares for “RosWall” and places each
piece on by hand.
Ellie and Michelle place clay pieces that
they made themselves on the wall.
Kyle and his dad team together to start on a
colorful abstract butterfly.

Kicking for Autism The Organization A brief synopsis…
Kicking For Autism is an organization in partnership with Autism Speaks founded by a group of Atlanta teens representing various high schools in the metro area. The Junior Board is composed of 11 teens hoping to make a difference in the lives of children with high functioning Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.
The idea for this organization stems from founding member Noah Newman’s experience of growing up with a brother who has high functioning autism as well as his love for soccer. He believes that soccer can provide the structure for kids to engage socially and athletically in a meaningful way.
With the start of this organization, these 11 teenagers hope to make an impact in the lives of other children across the Atlanta area and provide these children with an outlet for developing social and athletic skills.
Our first clinic of the 2012–2013 will be SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27 from 1:30–3:30pm at the MJCCA. Clinics will be run
by youth soccer coaches, speech pathologists to help facilitate the clinics, teen volunteers
from the Junior Board, and teens from various other high schools. The teens plan to
hold soccer clinics once a quarter with Mellow Mushroom donating pizza and
Kroger donating water and snacks for the event. Other sponsors include Foot Solutions and JB Paz Productions.
Join Us!
Additional Notes: Clinics are for children with high-functioning autism ages 7–14. For questions, comments, or concerns, please email Noah Newman at [email protected].

Senior Trip
Our senior trip has been planned for May 4
th – May 9
th, 2013. It will be a 5 day cruise to the Bahamas
aboard the Carnival Sensation. We will sail out of Port Canaveral, Florida, making stops at Freeport and Nassau and enjoy one day at sea (these stops are subject to change). This will be a wonderful opportunity for the seniors to spend time together, making lasting memories. We would like all of our seniors to be able to participate in this event. But, this trip should be considered a privilege, something to be earned. For a student to be eligible to participate in this trip, they will need to be current with all of their schoolwork, with satisfactory grades in each of their classes. Their academic success must come first! In addition, we expect each student to demonstrate mature, responsible and trustworthy behavior throughout the school year. Student safety will be our primary concern and we will do everything in our power to ensure this. Lastly, seniors who plan on going on the cruise must have $115 in savings at TCS. The cost of the trip will be approximately $1000.00. This includes port charges, taxes and all gratuities. This also includes round trip transportation between The Cottage School and Port Canaveral on a motor coach. The payments will be collected in three parts: 1. $250.00 deposit ($125 refundable until Dec 16) due 10/25/12 2. $350.00 payment due 12/6/12 3. $400.00 (approx.) payment due 2/1/13 There will be partial refunds available under some circumstances. A specific refund schedule will be included in a future Wednesday Packet. Trip insurance is available on an individual basis at a set cost in addition to your payment (this cost varies depending on the number of people who are interested and ranges from $50-$75. This will insure that you will be refunded up to $350 for last minute cancellation. Contact Ashley Bidlack ([email protected]) or 404-353-0752 if you have any questions. Student Name HR Teacher My child has my permission to go on the Senior Cruise. I have enclosed a deposit of $250.00 ($125 refundable up until 12/19/12). Parent Signature
