One incredibly hot Thursday in July, Walt and I decided to ride in the morning hoping to beat the worst of the day. . With the summer off from school, I’m fortunate to be able to do this. We met the Seasoned Spokes at the designated start location just over the Berks County border in Lancaster. I was

surprised to find about 15 riders raring to go despite the 90 degree temperature at 9AM.

We rode about 21 miles stopping in the shade a few times to regroup and rehydrate. The ride leader, Don Pawlowlski, led us out at a nice 15mph pace which was great for chatting as we rode along the country roads of Floyd Landis- land. The group was cheerful, friendly and courteous. There

was a great sense of camaraderie. We met new people like Jim Sutton and saw old friends like Bill Ruth. It was hot but our spirits were high and we had a great morning. As a bonus on the way home we stopped at a farm stand for blueberries, cantaloupe, and tomatoes. What a great way to start the day. Next week, I’ll do the pre and post rides. Hope more will consider the Seasoned Spokes and Social Stay Together option.

An Officers Meeting was held to tackle a few issues I was hoping to skate by in my last 8 months as President. We made some headway on a few points but stalemated at others. Ride Classifications has always been one of my pet peeves.

To me, it makes no sense to classify a ride based on distance. A 20 mile ride is a 20 mile ride. The terrain should determine the rating and your individual pace mark how much you want to push yourself or not. Which leads me to my other hot button-pace. We could not come to an agreement to extend the WAVES/pace idea past Tuesday nights. When a large group goes out as one, as we do on weekend rides, it gets too stretched out for easy regrouping without actually stopping to do so. The faster riders have pulled ahead leaving us scattered all over the road. If we left the lot in smaller packs by pace this might help the B and C paced groups stay together from the get-go. If I ride on the weekend, I will post on Facebook my intended ride pace. Generally it’s a B pace aka 16/17 average. I encourage others to group at the start and go out together. Newer members can hook up with the right group and those looking for a change of pace (no pun intended) can find a group to fit in. This is my own personal feeling and lucky for me that I get to vent like this in the newsletter.

Let’s be respectful and courteous to each other. We all have our own opinions but that’s what they are opinions and that doesn’t necessarily make it right or wrong for everyone.

And remember- don’t be a jerk: ride safe and ride smart.

MINuTEs Of ThE BCBC OffICErs MEETINg (held at Bella Italia on Monday, July 22nd, 2013)

Officers, Coordinators, and Members in Attendance: Kate H., Walt H., Gary R., Scott F., Butch U., Tom R., Dave C., Marc P., Laurie R., and Michelle B.

Club Miles - only the ride(s) posted in the newsletter/website counts for club miles. Any other ride(s) short or long brought to the ride start do not count for club miles. KOM mileage records/award will be discontinued in 2014

Insurance - the rides posted on the website/newsletter are covered by insurance. Liability insurance covers the BCBC and its members. Non-members have coverage as first time guests only. A new ride waiver is being developed. Shoo-fly invitational - additional insurance must be paid for non-members only, members are covered

Ride Times - The start times of 9:30am in June and 9:00am in July and August will remain the same. Rides over 60 miles have 8AM start.

Wednesday Night Ride - “Recovery” will be dropped from name. Recovery pace is different for individual rider. Oley will be eliminated from the rotation in 2014. Ride locations are CW, Fleetwood, Brecknock, and Temple

Paces - Tuesday night rides are successful with groups going out at intervals. No consensus on paces for the weekend rides.

Ride Classifications - Eliminate the lettering part of the ride, and simplify by using a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 based on overall terrain, followed by the mileage ex. 3 - 42. All rides will need to be reviewed and some will be reclassified.

GPS Link - Dave Cruzan is working on creating files and having a link on the website to enable riders to download a ride to their GPS The link will show course and elevation; this is an ongoing project. A link to cue sheets will be the shortcut to getting this information available. In the interim, cue sheets will be posted on Facebook for weekend rides.

Directions - Future link on the website will allow members to easily access directions to all ride start locations

Donations - BCBC membership to LAB $100.00; Rails-to-Trails $100.00

Respectfully submitted, Laurie Riley, Secretary

SPECIAL NOTE: Conrad Weiser Rides: Parking location change through Aug: Due to construction at the CW elementary school, parking for all CW rides will be 2 blocks away on the big vacant lot at Penn Ave and Werner St. The old Hoover Motors/ Train Station lot. The owners of Galen Hall Restaurant and Bob Fisher Chevrolet were happy to accommodate us which is great because ride sheets don’t have to be adjusted. So again, it’s the big lot at the traffic light on Penn Ave.
