Community ServiceIn May of this year, our company had the opportunity to really step up and provide relief to the community in and around Moore, Oklahoma as a result of the extensive tornado damage. I am extremely proud of the actions of all of our employees who contributed to this effort. Members of our MidCon team mobilized immediately to deploy light plants, generators and helping hands to the scene. They distributed bottled ^H[LY.H[VYHKLHUKZ\WWSPLZ[VÄYZ[YLZWVUKLYZOur region cook teams moved in and began cooking around the clock for emergency personnel and victims, preparing over 3,500 meals. Employees from locations across Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana collected clothes, diapers, toys and household items for families who lost their homes. In addition, Select pledged to match a portion of employee donations and a corporate giving site was set up through the Red Cross. Together, employees and Select donated well over $20,000 to a disaster relief fund and all of these actions are very much indicative of the kind of folks we have at Select. My hat is off to you!

We need to get our revenue SL]LSZIHJR[V^OLYL[OL`^LYLPU[OLÄYZ[X\HY[LYHUK0^HU[[VJOHSSLUNLL]LY`VULPUV\YZHSLZHUKVWLYH[PVUZorganizations to be mindful of revenue generating opportunities and to the ops folks in particular, to understand [OH[`V\YHIPSP[`[VWLYMVYTPUHUL_LTWSHY`THUULYPU[OLÄLSKPZ[OLILZ[^H`[VPUZ\YLYLWLH[I\ZPULZZHUKnew growth opportunities.

Another aspect of producing revenue for Select involves the breadth of customers we work for. It is human nature to get very comfortable doing business with a small group of customers that we have gotten to know well and being highly responsive to their needs. While that is a comfortable position, it also can be a risky position when that customer goes through a periodic downturn in their activity – as they all do – and we may not have V[OLYJ\Z[VTLYZ[V[\YU[VPUHZ\MÄJPLU[]VS\TL[VTHRL\W[OLKPMMLYLUJL:[YVUNJ\Z[VTLYYLSH[PVUZHYLH]LY`good thing but let’s make sure that we are also focused on adding new customers and providing new services to existing customers as well. The second half of the year should bring us a better activity environment to work in so let’s all put on our sales hat and get the revenue line growing!

As always, my thanks go out to all 4,700 Select employees (and their families) for your hard work and dedication.

2PJRVMMTLL[PUNZHYL[OLÄYZ[TLL[PUNZ[V[HRLWSHJL The work starts with the salesperson making the sale and talking with the customer about safety standards within their company. From there, the salesperson takes the information to the kickoff meeting where they meet with operations and safety people. At the kickoff meeting sales, operations and safety all talk about the job at hand and what Select needs to do in order to meet the customer’s standards. This is an important meeting where all three groups work together in order to get the job done right. Afterwards, safety takes the information and feeds it down the line.

Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is a method for evaluating a job in order to identify the steps necessary to reduce the associated risks to personnel and the environment during operations. The JHA is a useful tool meant to develop solutions that will eliminate, minimize or provide protection from hazards and incidents. The JHA process, when utilized as part of a pre-job safety meeting, is a valuable part of our accident prevention program. In addition to hazard recognition and incident prevention, a well JVUK\J[LK1/(^PSSPUJYLHZL[OLLMÄJPLUJ`VM[OL work crew.

Tailgate meetings are about 15 minutes and are less formal, with the common topic of safety. They tend to reiterated what has been stated in the JHA meeting. Meetings are held about once a week to reinforce our company’s philosophy that job safety is important. It is a way to refresh the project at hand, along with understanding the caution needed for a safe environment to work in. A tailgate talk provides an opportunity for a supervisor to emphasize the importance of a particular PZZ\LVYWYVJLK\YLMVYX\LZ[PVUZHUK[VTHRLZLYPV\Zcomments. Meetings may include recent injuries, safety violations, upcoming work schedule, what safety LX\PWTLU[ZOV\SKIL\ZLKHUK[OL[PTLHUKWSHJLVMQVILike any tool, they can’t help unless you use them!

Also, by sharing information about the upcoming project, everyone should be on the same page, working toward a common goal. Without these JHA and Toolbox meetings there would be a lot of miscommunication and more safety issues. For more information please refer to your safety handbook. If you don’t have one, contact your regional safety manager.

At the beginning of each Select project it is important to have a starting place, where everyone can come together and discuss what needs to be done. The most convenient and effective way to do this is through meetings. There are different kinds of meetings, some detailed, some less formal. It is vital we have a plan of action in place that everyone understands. Select has a couple different kinds of planning meetings for upcoming projects.

When you think of branding what pops into your head? Most people, when hearing the word brand, think of a name, symbol, design or slogan associated with the product or service. Companies use branding as a tool to market what they have to offer and to help them stand out from the competition. Branding helps identity and distinguish one company from the other. A brand can be one of the biggest assets a company possesses, even though most people would not agree.

Just as Select Energy Services serves as one source to our customer’s full spectrum of needs, we have brand standards that serve as your single source to all things Select Energy Services. From logo to photography usage

In conclusion, teambuilding is

great for companies to participate

in. It improves communication

and motivation along with creating

a more cohesive and productive

environment. We would like to

encourage more teambuilding

events within the company and be

sure to get a picture to email to the

newsletter group so we can put it

on the Select Facebook page!

identify questions and issues that

QHHGUHVROYLQJ)LQDOO\ÀYHLVWRhave fun! Several regions have

already begun to participate in

teambuilding exercises. A few

regions have hosted pot lucks

where everyone can come and

enjoy each other’s company while

having a big feast at the hands of

Select employees. Another is to

have get-togethers that

help the community,

like volunteer work

with charities. Some

regions even have

volunteer competitions

between yards to see

who can collect the

most donations or even

who can get the most

volunteer hours. Here

you are not only getting

to know each other but also helping

people in need in your area. There

are also sports teams that regions

can create, within Select or even

against other companies that

really uses fun and competiveness

to bring people closer together.

Finally, there are things like the

Relay for Life, Avon walk for

breast cancer, Mud Run, and Color

Run that are great activities for

teambuilding. It is important to

get to know fellow employees and

work as a team so we are able to

“achieve more”!!!!

Bobby Goins E.Texas/N.Louisiana, Office Manager

“I would like to take part in a paintball team building exercise experience. It enhances group dynamics, improves morale, enhances camaraderie, plus great exercise.”

Elva StillwellMidCon, Accounting Support

“A fun team building activity would be the color run, it would promote unity as well as healthy living.”

Jessica KnabeCorporat, Accounts Payable Processor

“Either doing volunteer work or different types of charity would assist with team building while being a positive impact on the communities that welcome us.”

Christine SustaitaSouth Texas, Administrative Assistant

“A fun idea for team building would be if Select employees get together once in a great while and had ice cream and just socialized with one another.”

Truman YearyMidCon, Senior Staff Accountant

“Recently the accounting department ran in a 5k mud run, I would like for our next team building activity to be a color run.”

Marilyn BrownE.Texas / N.Louisiana, Administrative Assistant

“I’ve been involved in team building events on pervious jobs but it was usually a day of activities and games with co-workers designed to get to know each other and establish trust among the group. Since that was office personnel only, I think it would be a good idea to set up suggestion boxes in a designated area at each location and allow employees such as truck drivers, field workers, etc. to submit ideas of group activities that they might have in mind for team building.”

Michelle ThomasE.Texas/N.Louisiana, HR Generalist

“In this team building activity, participants work to build the tallest free-standing tower they can with the supplies given. The tallest tower helps illustrate the importance of collaboration and communication and often ends with and ‘aha!’ moment when teams realize they are not collaborating as well as they could be. You will need some low-cost supplies such as: paper cups, plates, popsicle sticks or coffee sturrers and tape. There is some set up required before you begin.”

Miranda BowersMidCon, Accounting Manager

“Charity events such as the color run or the mud run would allow you to work together as a team plus do something nice for other people”

Savannah Suzanne DialE.Texas / N.Louisiana, Support/Processor

“Job Swap- take a few hours to swap jobs with a co-worker to get a better understanding of exactly what each of us do for the company. Create a list of a few daily tasks for each other to do.”

Nicholas Tyler BrownE.Texas / N.Louisiana, IT Team Lead

“A region wide fishing tournament, where you partner up with other employees and fish as a team. At the end of the day everything caught could be cleaned cooked and served to all employees at a dinner where we get more time to get to know each other outside of work”

Bobby WatsonE.Texas / N.Louisiana, IT Manager

“Company-wide participation in a local charity would be a selfless team building activity which would benefit not only our company but our communities.”

Jami Blagrave Permian, Senior Staff Accountant

“Quarterly staff meetings with a training lesson from another department could help improve a sense of unity throughout the office and expand knowledge throughout all departments.”

In case you haven’t noticed, we’re a big company –with LOTS of people! Where is Select?Founded in 1887 Williston, North Dakota, had 295 YLZPKLU[Z^P[OPUP[ZÄYZ[`LHYZ)`[OLYLwas an estimated population of 18,532. The town of Williston was named in honor of Daniel Willis James, a board TLTILYVM[OL5VY[O7HJPÄJ9HPSYVHK*VTWHU ̀Right around 1951 oil was discovered on a discrete farm owned by Clarence Iverson. Other than the oil, another attraction is its scenic rolling hills. Williston also has a rail station, Amtrak, which will commute travelers to Portland, Seattle or Chicago. About a year ago Jefferson bus line began servicing Williston as well. A few small tidbits about the town include: most General Motors Corvettes sold in the upper Midwest are sold in Williston. The town has a man-made lake known as Lake Sakakawea that is a popular destination for anglers across the nation. It has one of the most diverse populations of wild life anywhere in American. Lake Sakakawea is also a great place for those who love being outdoors. Another interesting fact is that Williston is home to the Miss ND organization.

While visiting the town there are a few different choices when dining out. There are the usual fast food places to choose from. Applebee’s is a good choice and Buffalo Wild Wings, which just opened up and is already the top revenue generating BWW in the nation! There is also Gramma Sharon’s Family Restaurant where there are big meals, and better desserts like pies! Finally, if you are looking for something a bit more formal Eagle Ridge Restaurant has a great 3 course meal with views overlooking a golf course.

Not too far down the road is the famous Links Golf Course, among America’s top 100 courses. We also have a brand new Williston Area Recreational Center due to open in March 2014 ~ it is going to be similar [VH@4*(^P[OHSHa`YP]LYNVSÄUNHYLHZWPUUPUNrooms, and so much more.

Festivals are a must in Williston and they have four year round. First up is the Band Day Festival in May, one that Select participated in, as you can see in the photos. Next is the Fort Union Rendezvous in

Where We Work.June. In August, Williston is home of the Chokecherry -LZ[P]HSH^LLRLUKÄSSLK^P[OMHTPS`M\UHJ[P]P[PLZThen during the colder months there is the October- Moon of the Changing Colors Pow-Wow and the September – Fort Union Living History Weekend.

Williston is known as being a historical site, with several historical attractions. There is the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site that is set during the fur-trade era. The fort is owned and maintained by the National Park Service. There is also Fort Buford Sate Park that is the center for a pioneer military fort along with a very memorable military graveyard. If you are looking for something adventurous, try out Cut Bluff Overlook, its two miles east of Williston and is a site for commemorating Lewis and Clark’s campsite near the bluff on the south banks of the Missouri River. Are you in the mood for a picnic in a setting where buffalo roam free? There are two parks to choose from, the Lewis and Clark State Park and the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. With so much history and so many attractions, you won’t run out of things to do!
