NAIDOC Week 1 ‐8 July With a growing awareness of the distinct cultural histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) peoples, NAIDOC week recognises the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culture to Australia’s history, society and the arts. The organising group continues to be known as National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC). This name has become the title for the whole week, not just the day. Each year, a theme is chosen to reflect the important issues and events for NAIDOC Week. Since 2008, Anne Martin and Ben Mitchell have been serving as co‐chairs of the National NAIDOC Committee. There will be events advertised in local newspapers. This year is the 40th anniversary of NAIDOC week. Hobart is hosting this year’s national celebration but there are many local events across the country. NAIDOC AT SCHOOL We will be celebrating this week when we return from the winter school vacation. We will have an art activity for K ‐2 students around an Aboriginal artwork and a poetry activity for Years 3 ‐6. Classes will be talking about ATSI culture during this week. We will have ASTI themed pencil cases on sale in the first week back to school. We also have three performances in the Hall on Wednesday 18 July 2012 from Aboriginal artists. 9:30 AM AND 11:40 AM for Years 3‐6 classes Ryka Ali has performed extensively across Australia and in many countries. He presents a blend of traditional and indigenous hip‐hop showing our students traditional and modern culture. 2:00 PM for K‐2 The Beatty Crew Stories, Dance and song from ATSI cultures will be presented in an engaging way for our younger students. MID‐YEAR STUDENT REPORTS The student reports were sent home on Monday except for 1W as Mrs Wilensky was absent and the casual teacher forgot to give them out. Please accept apologies for this mistake. We did remind the teacher but she was intent on the art lesson and cleaning up after it. If you have any questions about the report please see me or the class teacher early next term. NETBALL/TENNIS COURT UPGRADE Thanks partly to the NSW Government and mostly to the P&C the Netball Courts will be resurfaced during the school vacation. The P&C is wonderfully supportive of the school and I thank you for your support through the P&C. We plan to renovate the basketball court later this year. SCHOOL CONCERT (repeat) There will be two school concerts in September. One concert will involve all the students in the K‐2 classes. The other concert will involve all the students in the Years 3‐6 classes. Each concert will be presented twice, a matinee and an evening performance. The two K‐2 performances will be on Tuesday 11 September 2012 and the two Year 3‐6 performances will be on Thursday 13 September 2012. A contribution towards the cost of the costumes will be included in the school subject levies for Semester 2. This will also entitle families to two tickets to a concert. Additional tickets will also be for sale. You will get a form with your School Levy request asking you to state which performance you want to attend and if you want to buy extra tickets. Additional tickets will be a flat fee of $5.00 each.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
TRIVIA NIGHT Thank you to the P & C committee for organising such a successful Trivia Night last Saturday. Thank you to the hun‐dreds of parents who attended the night and to the generosity of so many parents who donated hundreds of dollars for the live and silent auctions. My husband, the teachers and I were amazed at the creativity of each tables’ display, the effort taken by everyone to dress up for the occasion and the fun loving community spirit. I feel very privileged to be working with and being part of the Wahroonga Public School’s community. 2012 NATIONAL NAIDOC WEEK Between the 1 and 8 July during National Naidoc Week, celebrations are held across Aus‐tralia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Austra‐lians from all walks of life. When the students return to school some of the students’ class‐room activities will involve celebrating this with a colouring‐in activity in Kindergarten to Year 2 and a poetry writing activity in Years 3 to 6. The highlight of the week will be K—6 performances by Taryn Laleen Beatty and Ryka Ali who are of Aboriginal and Torres Strait decent. The SRC will also have 200 pencil cases for sale for $3.50 on Wednesday 18 July 2012. Each pencil case will have a Respect band, ruler, pencil, sharpener and eraser inside. MULTICULTURAL PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION Congratulations to Wahroonga’s Public School’s finalist Nate C, Ben G, Tom H and Jay C for presenting four excel‐lently prepared and presented speeches at Monday’s ‘Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition’. The students each competed against thirteen students from various schools. The students presented a prepared speech as well as an impromptu speech of 1 minute and 2 minute duration. The winners, as determined by a professional adjudi‐cator of both competition, were from local school. Well done boys!
MOVING BODIES– KINDERGARTEN TO YEAR 2 In Term 3, Kindergarten to Year 2 students will participate in a Dance program taught by ‘Moving Bodies.’ The instruc‐tors of ‘Moving Bodies’ are highly trained and qualified in this area. The program will cover all of the dance elements through the use of stage appropriate locomotor and non‐locomotor skills. K—2 students will be still required to wear their sports uniform on Tuesday or Wednesday. Please note that on the first day back at school, Tuesday 17 July, Kin‐dergarten students will be required to wear their sports uniform and Year 1 and Year 2 students on Wednesday 18 July.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN PROMOTION IS ON AGAIN. From now until 1 July 2012, you can collect stickers at Woolworths that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children to collect on a special sticker card. Once it is completed, they can simply bring it back here to school or you can drop them into your local Woolworths collection box. Please get behind this project. With over 5000 points last year, we were able to purchase some wonderful teaching tools. Spare sticker cards are available at the front desk in the administration foyer.

ENRICHMENT AND EXTENSION PROGRAM NEWS Semester 1 has concluded and the students’ work will be on display in the Enrichment room on open day during edu‐cation week.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW FOR SEMESTER 1 2012 The Enrichment and Extension program provides the students with a differentiated program providing educational opportunities which promote a high level of student achievement. Differentiation relates to identifying individual dif‐ferences and implementing strategies to cater for students’ needs. This involves enrichment and extension activities which develop knowledge, application, thinking skills and attitudes appropriate to the students’ developmental level.
LANGUAGE AND EXPRESSION K‐6 students analysed texts for meaning and understanding to identify relationships between characters and events. Using the theme ‘CHANGE’ we investigated the impact of change on characters as a result of events in the text. Years 5 and 6 studied ‘Nanberry Black Brother White’ by Jackie French. This supported the unit ‘Traditions and Heri‐tage’ studied in class. Years 3 and 4 read ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’ by Kate Di Camillo. This story followed changes experi‐enced by a china rabbit in his quest to discover true feelings. The Williams Model for differentiation was used to design challenges for the students. These strategies enable stu‐dents to demonstrate curiosity, imagination, risk taking and complexity. Years K‐2 studied picture books which inspired writing, designs and the creation of models. The Maker Model provided the framework for activities. This model promotes flexibility to enable students to discuss and write about abstract ideas and deal with complexity. Tasks were focused on higher‐level thinking, creativity, deci‐sion making, planning and predicting. Students K‐6 used Graphic Organisers as an organisational tool when completing a writing task.
Aleesah Darlison, an author, visited all language sessions this semester and inspired the creation of a picture book.
SOLUTION FINDING K‐6 Students completed activities which involved selecting an appropriate strategy to solve a series of problems. They were also encouraged to use ‘invented strategies’ and explain these to the group. Choice is important and stu‐dents need to learn how to make choice to direct their learning. Students used the creative design strategy called SCAMPER to complete design tasks that solve problems. Students worked in groups to enhance creativity, divergent thinking and teamwork.
Robotics was also part of the program with Lego Mindstorms Education students can build robots and use software to plan, test and modify sequences of instructions from a variety of real life robotic behaviours. Robotics is an exciting way to bring science, technology and mathematics to the Enrichment Program. Students challenge other teams. They revise and review programming and reflect on their tasks.
VISUAL ARTS Students K‐6 learn to communicate thoughts, ideas and feelings through art. They studied the visual elements of art: colour, line, shape, form, space and texture. The principles of art were also studied. The students are learning to use their creative skills and experiment with different media. The artist Gustav Klimt from the Art Nouveau period inspired K‐2 to complete their version of ‘Baby’. The students created motifs and patterns and used these to develop a creative artwork. Years K‐4 completed their version of Klimt’s ‘Tree’ using Inktense pencils. Some Years 5 and 6 students chose to complete a chalk pastel landscape using acrylic paint with texture effects. Students K‐6 studied sculpture, referring to Graham Bondel and August Rodin as famous sculptors. The students were taught the sculpting methods and created a variety of sculptures. Years 3‐6 used paper, earthenware and raku clay which requires firing. K‐2 students used polymer clay. Students use their journal to keep a record of their creative journey. A series of reflections on the activities in pro‐
gress communicates the development of the artistic process.

Wow, what a night!!! Thank you to all the parents, teachers, Mr Benton and the many friends of Wahroonga Bush School, who at‐tended the Trivia Night. Over 300 people attended the evening was filled with much merriment and great fun. Our MCs Chris Bath and Jim Wilson were a dynamic duo and the "Quizz Wizz" Yvie Jones kept the questions and fun coming. Together we raised just over $23,000, in what was the biggest and best Trivia Night many people said they have ever attended!! Thank you to everyone for making such a great effort with their table decorations and wardrobe! Congratula‐tions to The Arctic Explorers for the Best Dressed Table and Team. Well done to the ‘Wiggets” for winning the Trivia Quiz!! Many Bush School families contributed and we thank you for your generous donations for the Mufti Day and in‐credible support in so many other ways. We were also greatly supported by the broader community of local business and corporations – most significantly our major financial sponsor – LJ Hooker Wahroonga & Pymble – sincere thanks for running the Auction. Last but not least, a very big thank you to the Trivia Committee – well done team – “many hands make light work” as they say and all the hard work certainly paid off!!

Why going online to order canteen lunches is a good idea Parents who use the online ordering system say it is easy to use. Parents have more control over orders and don’t need to look for change and a paper bag. The new system makes the canteen more efficient and it would be even better if all orders were online. At least 130 families are registered online. The reason we would like more families to utilize this function is for accurate and early notification of all our food requirements for the day – to assist us with food preparation and time management. To have a tally at 9am with only stickers to slap on a bag is a far superior system to emptying bags of coins, chasing up missing class baskets with bags and receiving late deliveries between 10 am and 1.15 pm. An example of a typical day was last Monday 25 June 2012 we had 67 orders online at 9am. I just press a button and tally these automatically. There were also 35 bags delivered by hand before school. These require an extra half‐hour to process plus an extra 15 mins waiting for baskets to be sent from the classrooms. Even though teachers had asked students in the morning six more bags were delivered as children remembered over the course of the day that they had a lunch order in their school bag. The moving tally total and the lack of uniformity to the system means we are not as effective as we might be. While this may not seem like many meals, they are individual orders and all the help‐ers and I are kept busy serving the wider student body for the whole of recess. On Wednesdays and Fridays we can have up to 130 online orders and 40‐50 hand delivered orders (of which at least 10% do not reach us before 10am). The most time consuming task is emptying the bags and checking the coins. Deal‐ing with late paper‐bag orders is very difficult too. If you want to help the canteen volunteers and help the kids please register online over the holidays. It is not difficult once you get started. You can order for the whole week, the night before or early that morning!
