PROBUS CLUB OF WAHROONGA EAST (Inc.)
NEWSLETTER 26 June 2017 Editor Geoff Morris 9449 9872 Vol.26 No. 6
http://www.probusclubwahroongaeast.org.au/
Our Club newsletter is published for the pleasure and information of our members only
FROM THE SECRETARY (Michael Dunn 9481 0042 [email protected] )
Good morning everyone.
First it was the Scottish Assembly holding a referendum for Independence, then the British Government did the same which
decided Brexit, but now--- the big one, Wahroonga East decides - will it be Bowral or the Blue Mountains in 2018?
Seriously after a number of members wondered if a change of location would be a good idea, following the 2016 spring trip to
Bowral, the Committee thought asking for everyone's view would be appropriate. David Barling and Ian Cameron have done
the research, which was circulated on 9 June. There was also a voting slip, please take a copy and bring it to the Meeting and
vote, following which we will do a count and start work on the 2018 visit, in accordance with the result. Later this year we are
going to Bowral of course.
Since our last meeting we have had some fabulous activities.
The Investment Group has researched, the Walkers have promenaded, Fine Wine and Diners have scoffed, the Theatre Goers
cheered and the Golfers hooked and sliced their way around the course! All terrific events, many thanks to our Convenors and
to everyone who joined in.
Planning is well underway for our 25th Anniversary Lunch at Monash Country Club on 21st July - Geoff Morris has done a
fabulous job in putting together a collage of photographs, which will remind us of many good times over the years.
Warwick Davis will step up to talk to us during today's meeting. Thank you Warwick.
And finally today our resident film maker, Len Hyde, will show us a movie he has made of his visit to Vivid. We will show it
just before morning tea, a nice way to end the formal proceedings of the morning. Many thanks Len.
I will place a flyer produced by Probus South Pacific on the Registration Desk on Monday, which outlines The
Probus Community and has a summary of the Probus Travel Insurance options available to members.
This may be a convenient ready reference for members.

Activities
I recently obtained an interesting list of activities undertaken by other Probus Clubs. Some activities which
caught my eye were groups involved in book exchange, computing, gardening, genealogy, wine tasting and
photography.
Whilst our Club is probably in the top quartile in terms of activities, we can always be on the lookout for new ones. To this
end I would be very happy to talk to any member who feels motivated to start a new activity including the ones mentioned
above!
New Members
As always the Membership Committee encourages all members to actively seek potential new members. Please don’t hesitate
to contact Peter Brand, Mike Dunn or myself.
NEXT MEETING: Monday 24 July 2017

Our recent game was played at Mona Vale on Friday, 16 June.
The course was very heavy due to recent rains resulting in no carts being allowed on the course which restricted our numbers
to a small degree. Also many of our usual attendees were overseas or otherwise unavailable to play which resulted in our
numbers being reduced to 10 players.
Scores were generally very good with Dick Stone and Doug Ferdinands being joint winners on 37 points. They were followed
by Rob Giacometti and John Spurrett both with 33 points. Someone had to come last so I made that my achievement of the
day.
Photos were taken as usual by Howard Gardner and these appear on the website.
Our next game is at North Ryde on 14 July.
Still proceeding well. It is good to hear the newer members of the group comment on how much they have
enjoyed the friendship & social side of their games, as well as the actual cards. This is something the longer
standing participants have long known.
For those of you who are regular followers of the website, you will see that we haven’t had an update for the
last week or so.
The reason is that we have experienced a bit of a “technical glitch” which is preventing us from sending
updates to our website. You can be assured we haven’t lost anything and all our data is safe and sound.
It does remind me though that it would be wise to find a second person to help look after the site and it would be great if
anyone, especially someone with some website experience, could volunteer to help me out from time to time.

Earlier this month there were thirty five of us at Lotus Inn, Wahroonga enjoying a fine Chinese
banquet. The food was great (everyone praised the prawn dish), the service was attentive and the
carpeted floor allowed a quieter meal than usual.
So where to next? Don’t worry it will be another beauty!

Mystery Tours: Exploring Ku-ring-gai. Thursday 29 June and Monday 3 July 2017.
8 30 am Bert Oldfield Park, Rosebery Avenue, Killara. $50 per person Following on from a fascinating talk on early Ku-ring-gai in July 2016 by Jo Harris of the Ku-ring-gai Historical Society
(KHS ), we have booked two tours organised by the Society. The tours take us to historic places, homes of notables and other
points of great interest in the suburbs of Ku-ring-gai. Some of these will be unknown to those who have lived in Ku-ring-gai
for many years.
Each tour can only take a maximum of 16 people so we have booked two tours on Thursday 29 June 2017 and Monday 3 July
2017. Both tours will start at 8.30 am from the Bert Oldfield Park (formerly Killara Park), Rosebery Avenue, Killara returning
about 4 pm.
A lunch of two courses with a glass of wine at a mystery location is included in the cost per person of $50.
Both Tours are fully booked and everyone has paid and submitted the forms requested in David’s email dated 1 May 2017. As
KHS has now been paid, there will be NO REFUNDS unless replacements can be found.
Those booked on 29 June 2017 tour are all couples namely Marr, Armstrong, Harricks, Maze, Wood, Cowdroy, Smith and
Sanders.
Those booked on 3 July 2017 tour are again all couples namely Barclay, Blackwell, Maclean, Fellew, Ferdinands, Booth,
Finney and Rigby.
Sydney Jewish Synagogue and Museum. Thursday 17 August 2017 Please note the new date for this event, as shown above and in the Events Calendar. The museum is very popular and we
have been moved to this date to allow museum staff to better manage patron numbers. The cost of the day is expected to be
$80 per head and we need at least 30 people to attend to make the booking viable.
Our coach will depart Bannockburn Oval at 8 45 am on Thursday 17 August and proceed to Centennial Park for morning tea.
The coach will then deliver us to the synagogue for our inspection which will start at 10 30 am. Lunch will follow at midday at
The Marigold Restaurant – this lunch venue yet to be confirmed. As the museum tour doesn’t commence until 2 00 pm, if
lunch finishes early we may be provided with a short sightseeing tour in the coach around parts of the Eastern Suburbs. The
coach will return to Bannockburn Oval by approximately 5 00 pm. At the June meeting, I will be calling for indications of
numbers of Probus members and partners wishing to attend.
Mamre Homestead & Penrith Fire Museum. Monday 13 or Wednesday 15 November 2017 Restoration activities are still not complete on the Mamre Homestead although we are advised that this work should be
finished by September/October. As a result, we are waiting to have confirmed that our planned November outing to Mamre
House can proceed. If restoration work prevents a November visit, an outing to an alternative venue will be arranged, details
of which will be publicised as soon as possible.

Last month’s guest speakers: “The NorthConnex Tunnel”
Well this week we had not one but
three speakers from the consortium
which is building the NorthConnex
tunnel and associated road works.
Hamish Vermeulen (Engineer),
Cassandra O'Connor (Media and
Community Adviser) and Anne
Learmouth ( Communications and
Stakeholder Engagement
Management) did a splendid job in
explaining to us the details of the
tunnelling, air extraction, associated
infrastructure and community liaison
amongst many other things.
As they explained, the Northconnex
project is a $3 billion underground
motorway connection between the M1
Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga and
the Hills M2 Motorway at West
Pennant Hills. The project involves
building 9 kilometre long tunnels which roughly follow the alignment of Pennant Hills Road and will be open to traffic in late
2019. It is one of the longest and deepest (90-100 metres at its deepest) tunnels in Australia
Hamish had lots of fascinating slides and a couple of videos showing what goes on underground, the enormous complexity of
the project, the extremely fine tolerances to which they must adhere, the comprehensive safety and emergency management
processes and the huge machinery they employ to drill and fortify the tunnels. I am sure the engineers amongst us understood
the technical stuff with which we were regaled but to the mere laymen it was perhaps a tad more difficult to properly
comprehend.
Whenever the questions veered off the engineering issues Cassandra jumped to the rescue with information about air stacks,
tolling etc. Anne then rounded off the presentation with a quick overview of the role of the community team and some of the
local initiatives.
