PRINCIPAL PROSE THANKS I have been absent for five weeks with a fractured wrist and elbow and during that time my executive team led the school and did an outstanding job. I want to especially thank our new Deputy Principal, Belinda Zorian, for her leadership over this period. I was very impressed with the way everything worked. I will also be away for the last two days of this term.  REPORTING TO PARENTS Thanks to all my class teachers for the time and effort they put into the parent‐teacher interviews. These are a valuable part of our suite of strategies for reporting student progress. At the end of next term written reports will be sent home as we do at the end of the year.  PHASING OUT MATHS TEXTBOOKS We have started a three‐year project to phase out mathematics textbooks and enhance our differentiated teaching and learning strategies. Curriculum differentiation in maths lessons means that not all the students are working on the same problems at the same time but are given problems that better suit their current knowledge and understanding. K ‐2 classes have already stopped using maths textbooks and next year the Year 3 & 4 classes will stop using these. The following year the Year 5 & 6 students will limit their use of these books as well.  The teachers are preparing for this change. Recently four teachers visited a school that has already made this change to see what the teachers there are doing. This will be the topic of the next School Development Day and we will be joining with North Turramurra PS for this activity. North Turramurra PS has already phased out maths textbooks.

LEARNING SUPPORT Parents can now refer their child to our learning support team as well as teachers. Most Tuesdays at lunchtime our learning support team meets to review the progress of students who have been referred by teachers. The students who are referred are not making the expected progress in literacy or in numeracy. The learning support team allocates the resources we have to support learning and applies for extra resources from the region if we think a student is eligible for these. We always ask parents before we apply for additional resources to help a student. There is a form on our website for you to submit if you wish to refer your child to the learning support team. The form can be found in the ‘Caring for Students’ section of our website on the ‘Learning Support’ page. Here is the link http://www.wahroonga‐p.schools.nsw.edu.au/caring‐for‐students/learning‐support  DAYLIGHT SAVING Daylight saving will end in New South Wales on Sunday 1 April 2012 at 3:00 am, when clocks will be put back one hour. Or, more sensibly, do this at bedtime on Saturday!         EARTH HOUR 2012 Add a bit of ambiance to your evening and help reduce carbon emissions for just one hour when you become part of the worldwide environmental event that is Earth Hour. This year it takes place on Saturday 31 March from 8.30‐9.30pm. More info: www.earthhour.org Tomorrow each class will switch off its lights for an hour for our contribution to this event.    APPS FOR LEARNING Young children love smartphones. Rather than just playing Angry Birds, why not download some educational apps that are fun too? You can find them at many different sites including: www.apps4kids.net/ www.smartappsforkids.com/ www.bestappsforkids.org/ www.abc.net.au/abcforkids/sites/playschool/about/apps/ www.inkids.com.au/ www.australianmuseum.net.au/BlogPost/Web‐2U/How‐to‐Choose‐iPhone‐Apps‐for‐Kids Don’t forget to download the terrific free app available at School A to Z for smartphones and tablet devices at: www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/about/mobile‐applications.  STAFFING I am happy to announce Miss Messer will be returning to us next term. I want to thank Mrs Campbell for taking 3M this term. She has done a wonderful job. Mrs Mills is taking long service leave next term and Mrs Palmer will be our teacher‐librarian for Term 2, 2012. I am unsure at present when Miss Hall will be fit for work. I wish her well in her recovery and hope we see her sooner rather than later. Mrs Marlin, our admin manager, is on long service leave for the first two weeks of next term for a Scottish sojourn. I hope Mr Marlin looks good playing golf in a kilt!  EASTER EGGS Tomorrow is the last day for students to bring in Easter Eggs for the Elderly. These eggs are delivered with the meals‐on‐wheels service for seniors with limited mobility. This is a great way for students to help older local people. This program may provide a golden opportunity for families to talk about those older people who are in this situation. I am reminded how lucky I am to have parents who are in their 80’s and are still fairly independent.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL YOUNG ICT EXPLORERS COMPETITION 2012 This year, nine students from Year 6 have been invited to join a team from Wahroonga Public School to enter the Young ICT (Information ,Communications and Technology) Explorers Competition. This competition sees school stu‐dents who have an interest in ICT from both NSW and Queensland compete to produce a team project using ICT skills. Our ICT teachers, Mrs Carlos and Mr Tomlins, have offered to support the students from Wahroonga Public in the development of a project for this exciting competition. Mr Tomlins will be meeting with the students every Mon‐day to guide and support the teams. The project will last until the end of Term 2. Pictured, are the team members who have just begun working with Mr Tomlins.  WINTER UNIFORM As the weather can be quite unpredictable, for the first two weeks of Term 2, students may wear either their Summer or Winter uniform.  

COMING SOON Great news! The uniform shop will soon be launching uniform sales onto the Flexi schools web site. This will mean when parents who currently log on to order school lunches, will also have the option to order uniforms as well. The school has approximately 240 students signed up for flexi schools for lunches and I am sure this will grow with the uni‐form shop orders as an option too. Jo, over the next few newsletters will inform the community of when and how to use the system.   

SCHOOL SPORT TERM 2 FOR YEARS 3—6 Thank you for returning the permission notes and money for these activities. The office staff have sent home remind‐ers this week as students will not be able to attend unless a signed permission note is received. Sport for Term 2 has been arranged to begin on the first Friday of Term 2 (27 April). Students going to PSSA netball and soccer, Macquarie swimming and the Macquarie Sports program will not be at school during lunch time. If ordering lunch at the canteen, there will be a limited selection of hot food available for these groups. These orders will be distributed at recess time. Whether ordering online or with a lunch bag, lunch orders must have your child’s sport group clearly labelled so that the canteen volunteers can  prepare the lunch orders early. Your attention to this will be very much appreciated.  DANCE, GROSS MOTOR AND SWIMMING PROGRAMS This term, Kindergarten to Year 2 students have participated in the ‘Moving Bodies’ gross motor program and Years 3 and 4 have participated in a Gymnastics program. Both these programs conclude next week.   

In Term 2, Kindergarten to Year 2 students will participate in a Gymnastics program. The instructors of ‘Moving Bodies’ are highly trained and qualified in this area. The program offers a variety of activities using specialist gymnastics equip‐ment such as balancing beams, bars, trampolines, vaulting boxes and hand held equipment.   

In Term 1, students from Years 3 to 6 participated in weekly swimming lessons instructed by Mrs Cath Moore, class‐room teachers and parent helpers. A special thank you to the many parents who have given their time to assist in teaching the students. The final lessons for the term will end next Thursday.  5OV students will be having their swim‐ming lessons on Tuesday at 12.20p.m. due to a Scripture service on Thursday. Three to four students of 5OV who at‐

tend Enrichment on the Tuesday, will choose between participating in both the Enrichment and swimming session or just completing the Enrichment session. The school’s swimming program will resume in Term 4.  Students in Years 5 and 6 have thoroughly enjoyed their creative dance experiences each Friday of this term. This program was presented by Elise McCallum, a highly motivated and enthusiastic specialist. She provided the children with a range of different activities based on movement and spatial awareness.  The final session will be tomorrow. Dance for Years 5 and 6 will also resume in Term 4.  CROSS COUNTRY The School’s Cross Country Carnival has been organised for Thursday  3 May (Term 2 week 2). Parents who can assist as marshals on the day would be appreciated. All students in Years 3 to 6 are required to return the permission note before the end of this term.   CLASS UNIFORM AWARDS The SRC representatives recorded whether their class was wearing perfect school uniform. Congratulations are ex‐tended to the following classes who earned uniform awards this week: KK, KD, 1T, 1MK, 2C, 3H, 3M, 5M and 5G.  EASTER SCRIPTURE SERVICE Next Thursday 5 April 2012 at 10:30am there will be a combined Easter Service for students who attend weekly Chris‐tian scripture classes. Students who do not attend Christian scripture lessons will not attend this service but will be supervised in classrooms. Parents are most welcome to attend this service. Following the service there will be a morn‐ing tea for our dedicated Scripture teachers.  TERM 2 WEEK 1

ENRICHMENT AND EXTENSION NEWS  The Language and Expression Program aims at developing the skills of communication. All forms of communication require practice to prepare us for future learning and career paths. Students need to learn to: 

speak effectively one to one  speak appropriately and clearly in a group situation  speak confidently to a large group and maintain the audiences’ attention  become good listeners  write for a variety of purposes and for a variety of audiences  use technology to communicate  use different levels of language appropriately 

 Students need to learn the skills required to communicate successfully for a specific purpose, on a specific topic for a particular audience in an appropriate form. With continuous practice students gain skill and confidence in their ability to perform before an audience.  These skills are developed in the sessions through speech making, drama activities, group challenges and presentation of ideas to the whole group. The development of writing skills is a process that continues throughout our lives. It is important that we equip our students with the skills to build on from an early age. The writing process is a school pri‐ority and during all the Enrichment and Extension sessions we promote the importance of writing our ideas in an ap‐propriate format encouraging creativity wherever possible. The writing process needs to meet the needs of the stu‐dents.  Many students today are visual learners who achieve greater success when they are presented with an instructional approach that suits their learning style. Students perform at a higher level if they are allowed to become active rather than passive learners. Graphic Organisers are useful and engaging tools that help students organise and review infor‐mation. There is an almost unlimited variety of Graphic Organisers available with formats from simple to complex. These can play a positive role from kindergarten to throughout life‐long learning. Graphic Organisers also promote success in goals that students would otherwise have struggled to achieve.  The writing process involves several stages: 

Pre writing (planning)  Writing (draft)  Revising (improving draft)  Editing (correcting the revised draft)  Publishing (sharing the final copy)  

Students’ ability to evaluate their progress is developed through on‐going reflections on completion of the task or presentation. These reflections also develop the ability to explore their thoughts and feelings. Thinking creatively and critically is relevant to their progress in becoming competent communicators. Analysing tasks, comparing and describ‐ing situations helps in the understanding of the topic. Using creative questioning also encourages the students to think and become intuitive learners. In the Language and Expression sessions our focus is not how to write, it is rather how to think through writing and write as a result of thinking.  Below is a thoughtful reflection written by Jayden W from 3/4G on the book ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tu‐lane’ by Kate Dicamillo.  I think this book is amazing! It’s full of turns, twists and feelings. The main character goes through a chain of events causing emotions, unexpected twists and feelings as you read. The happiest part is when Edward is rescued from the sea. He experienced happiness for the first time. I personally consider the funniest part is when Edward is mistaken for a girl. This book is supposed to teach Edward many feelings. It does this well. This book is amazing!

ENVIRONMENT REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE NEWS  Our Take –Two campaign is going well with many students remembering to pick up two pieces of rubbish each day. Congratulations to 6W, 5M and 2C for being the most consistent “Take‐Two” classes over the past couple of weeks. We also have a great group of “Clean Up Kids” who spend their lunchtime cleaning up the school.  They have special “Clean Up Australia” gloves to do their important job.  This week, at our meeting we talked about Earth Hour. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney. That year 2.2 million houses turned off lights for one hour. Earth Hour has grown and now 135 countries participate.  On Friday we will turn off lights, IWB’s, computers and air conditioners for an hour.  Don’t forget to turn off your electrical appliances on Saturday between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

WPS Writing Wall

After reading the book ‘My Dearest Dinosaur’, 2C imagined they were the little, adventurous dinosaur named, The Cheeky One. They wrote a letter to their dinosaur mother.  My dearest dinosaur Mum Today I stumbled upon that T‐Rex again. He did not see me, thankfully. I followed the T‐Rex and I found that he was going to the dinosaur Jurassic Olympic Games! I wanted to compete in some of the games too. Sadly I was too young to compete in most contests. Finally I found a contest to compete in. It was the log paddling race. Suddenly I heard a voice call out “Go”. I jumped on a log and started to paddle as fast as I could. I came third out of six dinosaurs. The next race I competed in was the running race but I came last because I bumped into a tree. I’ll write again soon.

 My dearest dinosaur Mum I had a great day today. I saw flying pteranodons veering for prey. After that I decided to look for Dad. When I started walking I wondered what it would be like to fly like a pteranodon. I decided I wanted to fly so much that I would try to fly on a pteranodon. I tried it and it worked. It was all going well until a Tyrannosaurus started chasing us. Then luckily we lost him. I thanked the pteranodons and started walking again.  Later I saw a hungry Dryptosaurus and it tried to eat me. I escaped by climbing a tree. I’m glad Dryptosauruses can’t climb trees or I’d be dead.  Three hours later I saw a river and I saw a log on the water. It can float. Then I saw my friend the baby Albertasaurus. I shouted out to come on the log too. We sailed along the river and we sang a song. We sailed past mosasaurs and plesiosaurs avoiding very painful bites. Oh we were looking for daddy so we can be a family again.  Then we saw a dinosaur that looked like me. I asked him directions. But for some reason instead of directions, he asked questions. I got them all right. He said “I’m your dad.” Then I introduced baby Albertasaurus. Now we are going to come back to you and be happy.

P & C NEWS There is a purple box in the office for the return of chocolate money.  We hope you are having lots of success selling the chocolates.  To those of you who have asked for additional boxes, these will come home with your children to‐morrow afternoon. There is a $30 iTunes card for the family who sells the most chocolates.    For those not selling chocolates, we appreciate the donations that have been received so far.  Anyone else wanting to make a donation can hand it in at the Office for the attention of the P&C.  We have a wonderful Trivia Night Committee who are moving ahead with the early planning. The Trivia Night will be held in the school hall on 23rd June.  There is a rugby test on that day at 3pm, so all of the rugby fans out there will be home in plenty of time to come to the Trivia night too!  Why not start talking to your friends now and organizing a table? Or better still, put together a table from your chil‐dren’s current classes and have a night out with some new friends? More information will follow next week.  Please ensure that you send in your Disco money before the end of Term (next Thursday).  This is a fantastic event for the children and they have a ball! Unfortunately late bookings cannot be accepted and no payments can be made on the night.  DIARY DATES:  Friday 4 May          School Disco Thursday 10 May          7pm, P&C Meeting Saturday 23 June          TRIVIA NIGHT

EASTER EGGS FOR OUR SENIOR CITIZENS Each year the children are encouraged to bring an Easter egg to school.  The Easter eggs are then donated to Ku‐ring‐gai Meals‐on‐Wheels from the children of Wahroonga Public School.   At Easter time, when the senior citizens receive their lunch time meal, it will be accompanied by a small Easter egg from the children of The Bush School.   If you would like your child to participate in this program and perhaps bring a little joy to a senior citizen living in our local community, please send in a small Easter egg and home made card to school with your child by 

 Friday 30 March. 

  The eggs will be collected in the office foyer.  The school will arrange to deliver the collection to Ku‐ring‐gai Meals‐on‐Wheels after recess on that day.   Thank you for your support in this activity.

BAND NEWS CAKE AND MUFTI DAY Thank you to everyone who supported the Cake and Mufti day by baking, selling cakes and sending along money. Your support is very much appreciated.  BAND CAMP:  23‐25 May 2012 Band Camp is a fabulous opportunity for the children to have intensive music tuition with some outstanding tutors and to enjoy a wonderful experience.  Crusaders Camp at Galston is a fantastic venue and to quote the children, “The food is great!”  They love the freedom of running on the huge oval, sitting around a campfire and spending time with their friends, while their music improves in leaps and bounds.  Concert Band will enjoy two nights departing at 3:00pm on Wednesday 23 May, other children in Years 4,5 and 6 will enjoy 2 days and one night and Year 3’s will have one long day including dinner.    Band Camp notes have been distributed during band rehearsals this week.  If your child has not received one by Mon‐day, please ask them to see Anne Seage in the band room.  Numbers are limited, so please return The forms asap to ensure a place.  All notes must be returned by Monday 4 May.  Please note that late enrolments cannot be accepted.  RECORDER  Wednesday’s recorder classes have moved to 1MK classroom.  Thank you so much to Mrs MilligAn for allowing them to share her room.  ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS Due to popular demand, the 2012/13 Entertainment Books will be available shortly.  A copy will be sent home to each band family early next term, but you can order online before the end of March and receive a sheet of six bonus vouchers.  You only need to use 3 or 4 vouchers to be financially in front, so please support the Bush School Band Program.  Ask family and friends if they would like to order a book.  Books for other areas, eg. Sydney, Parramatta and Blue Mountains etc, can be delivered within a few days of ordering. The Band Program makes $13 for each book sold, so you may prefer to make a donation.  If you do not wish to purchase the book, please return it to the band room asap.  ELECTRONIC DRUM KIT FOR SALE A Bush School family is selling their Yamaha DTXPLORER Drum Kit in excellent condition.  Cost: $500 o.n.o.  Please contact Chris (0479 040338) or Debra (0403 836318) if you are interested.  DIARY DATES: Band Camp:  23‐25 May. Ryde East Eisteddfod:  Sunday 27 May – Intermediate, Concert and Stage Bands. McDonalds Sydney Eisteddfod:  Intermediate Band ‐ 5 June.  Concert and Stage Bands ‐ 7 June.
