Residents will be asked to decide the fate of the budgets for both the Voorhees Township Public School K-8 District and Eastern Regional High School District, plus several candidates for the K-8 board of education . The K-8 district approved a $49.3 million budget in March. If passed, the budget will raise the average assessed homeowner’s school tax bill by $123 in 2011-12. An average assessed home in Voorhees is valued at $335,930. The total school tax levy for next year is about $41.7 million. The local school tax rate will increase by about 3.6 cents per every $100 of assessed property value if the budget is passed. To meet the 2 percent cap, the budget was decreased by almost $2 million from 2010-11. To reduce the budget the district is planning to cut three certified teachers, two administrative positions, eight resource assistants, a secre- tary position, and a business of- fice position. Health insurance costs couldcome down in the near future if Voorhees employees decide toplay ball with a new initiative inthe township.

The committee approved a res-olution that will allow townshipemployees to opt out of theirhealth insurance plan and receiveup to a $5,000 payout fromVoorhees Township. Currentlythere are 131 full-time employeesin the township and Voorheespays about $1.7 million in healthinsurance costs annually.

The township is required by

law to pay for the state health ben-efit plan for employees who workmore than 25-hours a week,Township Administrator LarrySpellman said. One family cover-

age plan costs the township about$20,000 a year.

“If you can lock that in for only$5,000 with the opt out, that’s asavings of $15,000 a year for thetownship,” Spellman said. “I’dtake that.”

This would work out for atownship employee who has aspouse with a high-end insuranceplan that covers them as well. Itwould provide them with upwardof $5,000 and save the townshipfrom having to pay for the insur-ance plan.

Committee Member MichaelFriedman praised the initiativeand said it would likely lead tosignificant savings for the town-

ship.“It’s a very smart fiscal movethat can save the township moneyin health insurance costs for thefuture,” he said.

employees to opt out of health benefits for one-time payout

Camden County ProsecutorWarren W. Faulk reported an ar-rest earlier this month in connec-tion with an assault of an under-age Voorhees girl.

Paul Theisen, 23, of the 900block of Northwood Avenue in

Cherry Hill, was charged withsecond degree sexual assault, third degree endangering the wel-fare of a child and four degreepossession of child pornography.

The prosecutor’s office report-ed that Theisen is currentlylodged in the Camden CountyCorrectional facility with bail setat $200,000.

Allegedly the assault occurredwhile Thiesen was babysitting anunderage Voorhees girl, accord-ing to the prosecutor’s office.

It is alleged Theisen inappro-priately touched the underagegirl while babysitting at her home

in Voorhees on Saturday, April 2.The child reported the incident

to her parents the next day, andthey reported it to police.

During a search of Theisen’sCherry Hill home, investigatorsfound numerous images of childpornography.

In addition to babysitting,Theisen also worked as a monitor

of before and after school pro-grams at the Clara Barton Schooland James H. Johnson Elemen-tary School in Cherry Hill, andwas a camp counselor at TallPines Day Care in Monroe.

Thiesen was an employee of the Cherry Hill School District’sSchool Age Child Care program.

Cherry Hill Schools Superin-tendent David Campbell sent outa letter to district parents lastweek informing them of thecharges.

Thiesen was immediately sus-pended pending the outcome of the investigation, Campbell said.

In addition to the cash award, winners were invited to a privatementoring brunch and panel dis-cussion with industry profession-als.

A selection of winning pieceswill also be featured onmtvU.com.

In a short interview Siegel andhis film partner Pat Bishop talked

about the inspiration for theirwinning piece branching frombeing huge fans of sketch comedywhile growing up.

The series gave a chance toSiegel and Bishop to form theirown group, discover their owncomedic sensibility, and gain theexperience of running a large-scale production.

“We shot a sketch called “GunClub,” a parody of “Fight Club,”where two guys get into a gunfight in a back alley. While wewere filming, someone called thepolice and they sent a car over,”they said. “Luckily we didn’t havethe fake guns out when the copsshowed up and we were able toconvince them to let us continueshooting and finish the sketch.”

Already?Presidential politics? Now? Ick

S

eriously. People are talking about running for president?

In April? 2011? We have to start this now? We can’t get

more Charlie Sheen/lost snake coverage for at least a fewmore weeks? Just about anything is better than listening to

months of campaign gibberish.

Politicians and other POTUS

wanna-bes usually start off

with a “Who, me?” kind of false

modesty. Then they announce

they’re thinking about run-

ning. Then they form an “ex-

ploratory committee.” Then,

like they’re giving us all some kind of early birthday present,

they declare that they, after much soul-searching and at the urg-

ing of millions of working men, women, children and dogs, in-

deed will selflessly, albeit reluctantly and at great personal sac-rifice, toss their hat into the ring.

Oh, please. The Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary

are months away. Why all the drama now? Yes, we know it takes

a good bit of planning to run a presidential campaign. But

please spare us the soap operas this far in advance of anyone

actually casting a vote.

We’re all for spirited debate of the issues – at all levels of gov-

ernment. It’s democracy in action. It’s the way people get their

views across, figure out which candidates to support and, in the

end, with any luck, solve some problems.

That’s honest, responsible campaigning/governing. Useful

stuff. Meaningful stuff. Stuff people can sink their teeth into,

but stuff that usually happens closer to when an election is

about to take place or when no election is approaching and

politicians are doing their jobs – you know, governing.

What are we going to be subjected to for the next eight or so

months from these presidential hopefuls? Announcements of

staffing hires and fires? Fund-raising pleas? Photo-ops?

Here’s a tip: Regular people don’t care about this stuff. At

least not now.
