Described by his foster mom Rita Mullholand as a gentleman, Saturn is currently one of the dogs available for adoption through theBlind Dog Rescue based in Philadelphia. Both Saturn and Mullholand came out for the festivities at Woofstock 2013 in John ConnollyPark on Sept. 21. Fostering Saturn for a month, Mullholand says that he was originally found in southern Virginia and was believed tobe chained up most of his life due to scarring around his legs and some muscular dystrophy. In addition, Saturn is also partially blindand deaf. For more photos from the Woofstock event, please see page 14.

On Sept. 19, Voorhees Township wasprivileged to host the monthly meeting ofthe Camden County Board of Chosen Free-holders at Town Hall. The meeting openedwith a stirring rendition of the NationalAnthem performed by Meredith Brandt ofVoorhees, and the Voorhees Township Citi-zens Cultural Diversity Advisory Commit-tee led the Pledge of Allegiance.

I was proud to learn from the freehold-ers that Voorhees Township will be recog-nized for our commitment to economic de-velopment by receiving an award at the 8th

Annual Tri-County Economic Summit onOct. 18. The event showcases the regionalresources in both public and private sec-tors, as well as highlighting places wheresignificant economic advancement has oc-curred. The award salutes the township for

showing exempla-ry leadership by fa-cilitating partner-ships between gov-ernment and busi-ness for the better-ment of the localeconomy and com-munity.

The awardspecifically recog-nizes the town-ships redevelop-

ment efforts at theVoorhees TownCenter, with acombination ofnew restaurantsand unique shop-

ping experiences. Additionally, the awardrecognizes the efforts made along theRoute 73 corridor, specifically the MedicalMile. The cornerstone of this redevelop-ment is the new state-of-the-art Virtua Hos-pital and their partnerships with Chil-drens Hospital of Philadelphia and FoxChase Cancer Center.

We are thrilled to be recognized withsuch a prestigious award.

The freeholders also presented a checkin the amount of $43,500 to Voorhees Town-ship, which represents our share of a Com-

munity Development Block Grant. Thefunds are used for senior citizens services.

    MAYORS MESSAGE

    New Jersey residents are rich.

    Really rich. Were the second-

richest state in the nation, be-

hind only those people two states to

    the south in Maryland.

    The median household income for

New Jersey residents is $69,667. Thats

pretty good news. The bad news: That number is

boosted in large part by the states

    ridiculously wealthy families. More

than 11 percent of families here have

an income of more than $200,000 per

    year.

On the surface, the Garden States

ranking of No. 2 on the list of wealthi-

est states, compiled by 24/7 Wall St., is

a positive sign to our economys health

    and future prospects. Dig deeper,

though, and youll see a much differ-

    ent story.

    New Jerseys unemployment rate

was 9.5 percent in 2012, one of the

worst in the country. The national av-erage was 8.1 percent. The state above

us on the rich list, Maryland, had a

low unemployment rate of 6.8 percent,

for example. Even worse, the number

of people on food stamps increased

from 8 percent in 2011 to 9.3 percent in

    2012.

    That is not good news.

Still, our outlook is getting better. As

    of August, New Jerseys unemploy-

ment rate was 8.5 percent, according

to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Thats the lowest mark since March

2009, when it was 8.3 percent. It also

closed the gap between the national

unemployment rate, which sat at 7.3

    percent in August.

But New Jersey needs to help busi-

nesses create more jobs. While the

state gained 60,300 jobs in the past 12

months, it lost 1,500 in August. From

July to August, more than 12,000 work-

ers stopped looking for work and leftthe workforce.

    Thats not good, either.

    Gov. Christie recently revamped the

states business tax breaks in an effort

to add more jobs, but how effective

that will be might take time to tell. Its

a good first step, as any incentive to

add more jobs is a positive step, as

long as the state isnt digging a deeper

    debt hole.

The bottom line is our workers need

more jobs because the fact is that,

while a small percentage of New Jer-

sey families are rich, most are still

    struggling.

    in our opinion

Were rich!!Well, at least some people are

    Your thoughts

What, if anything, should our stategovernment do to incentivize businessesto add more jobs?

Vote to ban gestationcrates in pork industry

As a voter who cares about allanimals, Im writing in support ofS. 1921, the bill to ban gestationcrates.

If you havent heard of gesta-

tion crates, its not surprising: thepork industry would prefer youimagine pigs frolicking in openfields than for you to know the re-ality. Gestation crates are metaland cement cages that are justbarely the size of a pigs body. Shecant even turn around, much less

socialize with other pigs or walkaround.

These torture devices are com-pletely unnecessary.

I urge our state Sen. DianeAllen to support S.1921 and passthe veto override.

rubric for each element clearlyoutlines what is required of astaff member for each score, which ranges from unsatisfacto-ry to basic to proficient to

distinguished. The rubric outlines specifical-ly what behaviors to show, Cran-mer said.

Cranmer also added that thisnew evaluation system was thebest fit for the Voorhees schooldistrict because it allows teachersto reflect and evaluate their ownperformance as well as factor intheir own comments, making theevaluation a more collaborativeeffort between teachers and ad-ministrators.

They have more of an input,Cranmer said.

As of this year, teachers will beevaluated once a year for tenureand three times a year for non-tenure.

Other teacher evaluation sys-tems the district considered werethe McRELs Teacher EvaluationSystem, Stronge Teacher Evalua-tion System, and MarzanoTeacher Evaluation. Cranmeralso added that the Frameworkfor Teaching is the most popularteacher evaluation for school dis-tricts in the region.

During the meeting, the boardalso honored eight of the 17 teach-ers retiring this year from theVoorhees school district, as wellas two members of the Osage Ele-mentary School faculty who haveserved the district for 25 years.

Superintendent RaymondBrosel Jr. also answered questionsfrom the public in regard to over-crowding in the districts schools,

including Osage. Brosel said theboard is currently working withstaff on the issue, but plans to or-chestrate an open forum meetingbetween parents and the board todiscuss possible solutions.

Why are you running for com-mittee?: Two words: Checksand Balances.

For the past three years, Ihave been honored to serve as anew voice for Voorhees resi-dents to check and balance theold business as usual way ofoperating local government

    countering an out-of-touch, en-

trenched, municipal machinethat saw nothing wrong withraising spending, raising taxesand enriching itself and its po-litical cronies on the backs ofVoorhees taxpayers. With mypresence, our government willcontinue to be more transpar-ent, more accountable to the res-idents, more efficient and moreinnovative.

If elected, what would be your

    top priority?

My top priority is something that Ihave advocated for the last three years. In-creasing non-tax revenue to our town-ship. Instead of turning to the taxpayersfor more money every time something onthe townships wish-list needs improve-ments, we should be partnering with ourlocal businesses to share in these costswhile at the same time promoting them! These public-private partnerships canhave a demonstrable positive impact onproperty taxes while at the same timeproviding unheralded exposure for our

    township commercial rateable base.
