The Voorhees Township Com-mittee approved a motion at itsSept. 8 meeting to make an appli-cation for a $350,000 state grant tofund phase one of turning the oldBuzby Landfill into the VoorheesEnvironmental Park.

We have been working 10years to turn the old landfill intoa park, Township AdministratorLarry Spellman said.

    Voorhees has been workingwith Rutgers

University students as well assome Eastern High School stu-dents to help make the VoorheesEnvironmental Park a place peo-ple would love to go and enjoy.

Earth Day has been held at theVoorhees Environmental Park forthe past few years since Voorheesacquired the land. The townshipwants people to know it is thereand the land will hopefully be ap-proved to make into a park.

The state will determine if theapplication is complete and inconformance with the scope andintent of the Green Acres Pro-gram. Then it will notifyVoorhees of the amount of the

funding award.Voorhees has its matchingshare of the project, if a

match is required, in theamount of $325,000. In theevent the state's funds areless than the $325,000, thetownship has the balance

of funding necessary tocomplete the project, offi-

    cials said.According to Spellman,

the hope is to get permits tobuild on the land. Voorhees

wishes to construct a small park-ing lot, and depending on howmuch money is awarded, if any, it

All work, then playTownship Committee applies to make

    Environmental Park a reality

    SEPT. 1723, 2014 THE VOORHEES SUN 5

    By BRIGIT BAUMAThe Sun

The warm summer months arestarting to cool down. The leavesare starting to change colors andthe sunny days are getting short-er. That means that the fall is al-most here.

For the fall, Voorhees has a fewdifferent events to celebrate, specifically, one of the most well-known holidays of October, Hal-

loween.Halloween can be known as a

time for mischief or for creepythings to go bump in the night. However, for Voorhees, it is allabout family and friendly fun.

Starting off the Halloween-themed events is Thiller Night!Held on Oct. 26 from 6:30 p.m. to10:30 p.m. at the Special EventsPlaza, Boulevard, Macy's Court

and Boscov's Court, ThrillerNight promises to be a fun time.

Weve been doing it for thepast few years, said Lisa Milideo, assistant marketing director ofthe Voorhees Town Center.

The event starts with a Hal-loween-themed movie on a 20-footoutdoor movie screen. This yearsmovie will be The NightmareBefore Christmas.

    Its a good classic, Milideosaid.

There will also be SpiritHours at Iron Hill, Rodizio Grilland Catelli. Visitors can enjoyspecials at the bars and might runinto a few festive characters.

We have a 12-foot skeleton,seven-foot Frankenstein and amagical witch who will come inand out of the bars during Spirit

MAYORS MESSAGE please see KIRKWOOD, page 17

No one would ever accuse Gov.

    Christie of being reserved, of

not speaking his mind, or of

    not taking chances.

    No one.

Last week, he solidified that once

again when he decided to lift New Jer-

seys ban on sports betting. His deci-sion which came as a surprise to

many around the state and nation is

in direct opposition to what he said a

month ago when he told us all to forget

    about sports gambling.

    With the governors decision, and

    directive to law enforcement, casinos

and horse race tracks can start offer-

ing bets on professional and collegiate

sports as soon as a judge affirms

that what Christie is doing is legal, or

    at least isnt illegal.

A federal law prohibits sports bet-

ting in all but four states. When New

Jersey challenged that law, it went all

the way up the legal ladder, but the

Supreme Court decided not to hear the

case. So, alas, no overturn of the feder-

    al law.

But a federal appeals court just

below the Supreme Court said nothing

was preventing New Jersey from re-

pealing its own ban and not regulating

the industry much like the states of

    Washington and Colorado do with

    marijuana.

So last week, thats what Christie

did. He repealed the state ban on

sports betting and said New Jersey

    wont regulate, license or authorize

    sports betting officially. Acting state

    Attorney General John Hoffman said,

in fact, that the state will be telling

casinos and tracks that they wont be

    held liable for sports wagering.

Its not the avenue that Christie, or

any one else at the state level, wanted

to take, but it seems as though its the

road they feel they were forced down

because they want sports wagering so

badly. And can you blame them for this?

Three Atlantic City casinos shut down

in the last month, and one more, the

Trump Taj Mahal, just announced it

would be closing in November. Those

four closings will eventually result in

the loss of more than 10,000 jobs and

be a hit on a big tax money-maker for

    the state.

Bets cant be placed yet a federalcourt is expected to affirm Christies

position in a few weeks and when

they are, you wont be able to bet on

any professional sports event held in

New Jersey (no Jets, Giants or Devils

home games) or on any New Jersey

college team no matter where they

play (no Ray Rice alma mater). Every-

thing else, though, will be offered on

    the big board.

While the NFL and other profession-

al sports leagues might fight this

move, its unlikely they will prevail

    forever. Even NBA commissioner

Adam Silver said its inevitable and

that his league will ultimately partic-

    ipate in that.

Will this be the shot in the arm New

    Jerseys gambling landscape needs?

Can it finally, once and for all, turn

into Las Vegas East? Its hard to tell.

    in our opinion

Its time to take the pointsChristie takes chance onNew Jersey sports betting as theunderdog

    SEPT. 1723, 2014 THE VOORHEES SUN 11

    Countywide flu shot program

    kicks off on Oct. 1

    The change of sea-

    sons leaves many peo-

    ple feeling under the

weather. But you canavoid getting sick by

    getting a flu shot. The

    Camden County De-

    partment of Health

    and Human Services

    recommends that

everyone get vaccinated this flu season,

    especially children and seniors who

    are most vulnerable.

    The Freeholder Board has sched-

uled 18 site locations for the 2014 Sea-

    sonal Influenza Immunization

Program. As is the tradition, the pro-

gram begins at the annual Senior

Health Fair, which this year takes place

on Oct. 1, in Cooper River Park at the

Jack Curtiss Stadium, starting at 10:00

    a.m. and continuing through 2:00 p.m.

When you visit the 20th annual fair

for your flu shot, youll also find dozens

    of health information tables, games,

prizes and lunch for all senior citizens.

The launch of the flu shot program iscoordinated with the fair because men

and women age 65 and older are among

the high priority groups for annual

shots. As always, we ask that seniors

    receiving Medicare to bring their

    Medicare ID cards with them.

The flu shots are provided for no-

    out-of-pocket cost. Seniors that register

with the Camden County Division of

    Senior and Disabled Services will

enjoy a complimentary lunch at the

fair. Call (856) 374-2782 or log on towww.camdencounty.com to RSVP.

In order to keep your family healthy

this flu season, we want to make this

beneficial service easy to access. That

is why we host immunization sites at

    convenient locations

    across Camden County,

    in addition to the an-

    nual Senior HealthFair.

    The flu cannot only

    create challenges at

home, but it can have a

    negative effect on the

    workplace crippling

    businesses and suffocating production.

The flu can spread quickly through

any office and infect several employees

through the simple act of coughing. If

you are a business owner, you should

also encourage your employees to get

vaccinated. It literally pays to get a

    flu shot.

    Pregnant women and chronically ill

people are other high priority groups.

Flu shots are also recommended for

people with weakened immune or car-

    diovascular systems, or with chronic

    metabolic diseases, renal dysfunction

    or blood disorders. Youngsters aged

nine and older must be accompanied

by an adult. Children under nine needtwo shots, a month apart, and should

be seen by a pediatrician. For unin-

sured children, call CamCare at (856)

541-9811 or the Camden County Health

Center in Bellmawr at (856) 931-2700.

For a complete list of flu shot loca-

    tions, visit www.camdencoutny.com.

partment of Health and Human Serv-

    ices at (800) 999-9045.

The second Halloween-themedevent at Voorhees will be its 9thannual Halloween in the Parkheld at Connolly Park on Oct. 26.It goes from 1 to 4 p.m., rain orshine.

Held the Sunday before Hal-loween, Halloween in the Park isfor everyone to come and enjoy. Its a safe, fun place for kids to

come together and trick-or-treat,who otherwise might not be ableto go out.

The kids can enjoy. We inviteparents, grandparents, signifi-

cant others to come out, getdressed up and have fun, saidMichael Marchitto, director ofspecial events for Voorhees. What we offer is something a lotof towns dont offer.

Since this event was put togeth-er, Marchitto said theyve hadpumpkin painting and decorat-ing. A hayride is run through thepark where the hay wagons pullthe kids to an actual pumpkin-picking patch. Sponsored by theVoorhees Business Association, the children get a free pumpkin, and from there, they take ahayride back to a decorating areawhere they get to decorate theirpumpkins any way theyd like.

At the park, there will be bal-loon artists, face painters and aHalloween-themed magic show. The police and fire departmentswill also be doing safety demon-

strations and childrens IDs,where parents can register theirchild for an ID card.

There will also be a kids cos-tume parade. While music is play-

ing, children will get the chanceto walk through the park and upon stage where they can take pic-tures with family and others.

The kids love being on stage. It is the biggest hit along with thepumpkins, Marchitto said.

Of course, what is Halloweenwithout the treats? At the event, there will be specially markedstations where children can trick-or-treat and get special treats.Others sometimes join to give thekids free pretzels and other good-ies.

As long as everyone has a goodtime, that is what it is all about,Marchitto said.

Admission is free and parkingis free for the Halloween in thePark event. For more informationabout the event call the hotline at(856) 882-SHOW or visitwww.voorheesnj.com website.
