Voorhees joins Relay for Life in MarltonBy ZANE CLARK

    The Sun

A Relay for Life may not havetaken place in Voorhees this year, but that didnt stop the people ofVoorhees from finding a Relaywhere they could continue toraise money for the AmericanCancer Society and the fightagainst cancer.

According to Jeanette Golden, chairperson of the VoorheesRelay for Life, this year theVoorhees Relay had problemswith its venue, so the teams sim-ply joined the event in Marlton onMay 31 instead.

We have incredible teams andan incredible mayor who sup-ports the entire Voorhees Relay, and we are just so grateful thatMarlton allowed us to come onover and be celebrated, Goldensaid.

Even with having to move theVoorhees participants outside ofthe town, this year about nineVoorhees teams and more than 40participants were still able to

raise more than $13,000.Golden is no stranger to find-

ing ways to make Relay for Lifehappen. She was the one whostarted the first Voorhees Relaythree years ago.

When I moved to Voorhees, there was no Relay or anythinglike that, and I guess it was in myblood, Golden said. It was some-thing that I really admire, howthey support survivors and honor

those who didnt make it.Golden, a three-time cancer

survivor, said Relay events are agreat way for cancer survivors tocome together and find othersthey can relate to.

Unless youve ever heard thewords youve got cancer, you can

love somebody, care about them, pretend to know, but unlessyouve heard those words youdont get it, Golden said. Werenot asking for Im sorry, but toknow that the other person has acamaraderie with us.

Golden said the people at the

events without cancer also do agreat job honoring the survivorsand making them feel amazing.

The survivors are honored, they get a free t-shirt, they get afree luncheon, and everything isfree, Golden said. Were here toboost everybody up that is a sur-

vivor, and it makes survivors real-ize youre not alone. So much ofthe time we all fight on our own.

We go to the clinic, we get ourchemo, we get our radiation, andthen were gone. This actuallybrings people together for suchan amazing cause.

For those unsure about Relayevents, Golden encourages peopleto look out for future Relays andgo to a Luminaria ceremony, thepart of the event where thosewith cancer or those who havedied because of the disease are re-membered with a candle inside abag placed along the track and litafter dark.

This is such an amazing com-munity event, and I encouragepeople to look out for any Relayfor Life event and to come out tothe Luminaria ceremony, Gold-en said. Take one lap aroundwhen the Luminaria is starting it will change your life. You cantexplain that to anybody, you haveto be here, you have to experienceit.

    Golden said next year there

will once again be a VoorheesRelay event in town, and shehopes to see many people therebecause anybody can participate.

Walk a lap every once andawhile, Golden said. Its lifechanging anybody can do it.Ive seen people in wheelchairs,Ive seen people with canes, Iveseen people who were helpedaround the track. Anybody can bea part of the Relay for Life.

    ZANE CLARK/The Sun

Although a Voorhees Relay for Life didnt take place in Voorhees this year, Voorhees Relay teams wereable to join the Marlton Relay for Life on the night of May 31 through the morning of June 1 at CherokeeHigh School. Nine Voorhees teams and more than 40 participants were able to raise more than $13,000.

    he principle of the American

    Dream is simple: Work hard

    and you can achieve anything.

It doesnt matter who you are, where

you come from or where you want to

go, you can get there in America.

The principle itself is simple, al-

though its not easy to attain. It takes

hard work, dedication and some good

    old-fashioned luck.

The American Dream is why the

United States is considered the melt-

    ing pot of the world.

Pilgrims first came to the New

World for something more. They got

    that. Then their descendants fought

for the right to be independent andcontinue that dream.

    Generations that followed forged

    successful, fulfilling lives here, some

starting with dirt and ending with

gold. That made our country even

    more popular for more immigrants

from different parts of the globe.

    This opportunity, the availability for

    upward mobility, to make something

of yourself, is the crux of what we are.

But is that American Dream becom-

ing less of a reality and more of a pure

dream? Many people feel that it is.

    CNNMoneys American Dream Poll

found that almost 60 percent of re-

    spondents feel that the American

Dream no matter how they define it is out of reach.

Thats not good. Whats even worse

is that adults between 18 and 34 said

that the dream is not only unattain-

able, but 63 percent said its impossi-

ble. Even worse, all Americans agree

    with them. Their parents generation

who by the way, think they are better

off than their parents were say that

their kids, these 18-34 year olds, wont

    be better off than them.

    Yikes!

    Maybe the survey results shouldnt

be all that surprising, considering the

recession that turned the world upside

down and has continued to have ill ef-

fects on the job market. But what the

results should be is a wake-up call.

The American Dream was the foun-

dation of our country, and it needs to

be for years to come. If any one gener-

    ation finds that dream unattainable,

well lose our identity and most im-portantly, well lose these people.

So what does this generation need?

It needs opportunity. It needs jobs. It

    needs the availability of mobility.

Who can provide it? That is the

question that needs to be answered.

The AmericanDream......its out of reach for most Americans, so says a new poll

    Your thoughts

What do you think about the AmericanDream becoming unattainable? Shareyour thoughts on this, and other topics, through a letter to the editor.

    By NICK COHENThe Sun

For the first time in more than

a decade, the Vikings footballteam of Eastern High School willhave a new voice in its ear for theupcoming season.

Vice principal for athletics PhilSmart announced that Daniel Bo-guszewski will be the head foot-ball coach for the 2014 season. Bo-guszewski replaces Dan Spittalwho resigned in April.

I am confident that coach Bo-guszewski has the energy, passionand the plan to continue the

proud tradition of EasternViking football. He will be astrong communicator and leader, instilling in his players a strongwork ethic and a team first ap-proach, Smart said in a state-ment.

A veteran of 14 seasons, Spittalleft Eastern with an 86-61 careerrecord, directing the Vikings tothe 2003 South Jersey Group IVtitle, the only sectional crown inprogram history. He served as anassistant for eight years before

taking the helm. The Vikings went 10-2 last sea-

son, reaching the South JerseyGroup V championship gameagainst Cherokee. Boguszewskiadmits that Spittal left big shoesto fill at the school but has beeninvaluable in the transition.

Coach Spittal has been a greatresource for me. Ive alreadyreached out to him a few times soI could pick his brain, Bo-guszewski said.

Boguszewski, a South Jerseynative, played football at Over-brook High School where he cap-tained the 1998 Group IV StateChampionship team. He contin-ued his playing career at WesternConnecticut University andRowan University.

Boguszewski began his coach-ing career at the high school levelat Paul VI High School during the2004 season. There, he progressed

from a position coach to coordina-tor position in 2011.

During the 2012 season, hecoached at Sterling High Schoolas an assistant, serving as offen-sive coordinator and runningbacks coach. In 2013, he returnedto Paul VI as the offensive linecoach. Having the opportunity tocoach at Eastern has been a goalfor Boguszewski.

Being the head coach at East-ern is my dream job that Ive al-

ways wanted. It being a regionalschool, the community that sur-rounds it. Its amazing to behere, Boguszewski said.

    His goal since being named

head coach has been creating abuzz around the team. Bo-guszewski already reached out toyouth leagues in the area as well

as Eastern alumni hoping tobuild excitement for the upcom-ing season. He first met with theteam last week.

I told them that were going todo it right, and were going to doit big. Well be focused on doingthe right things on the field andin the classroom. Were going tobe student athletes, Boguszews-ki said. We talked about how im-portant community involvementis, how important character is.

We want high character guys. The message was received. They were excited, Bo-

guszewski said. Theyre ready toget to work for sure.

To truly excel in any career, you must make sacrifices. Okx-ana Cordova-Hoyos is makingquite a sacrifice this summer, traveling to Tajikistan to partici-pate in a volunteer effort with

IRODA to raise awareness ofautism spectrum disorder.I have always loved volunteer-

ing, Cordova-Hoyos said. I vol-unteered all through high schoolat the Voorhees Pediatric facility, and that cemented my decision topursue a career in the medicalfield for children.

The program seeks to servetwo purposes, according to StefanCornibert, program director atAmericas Unofficial Ambassa-dors.

This program is part of aservice learning course at TCNJ,Cornibert said. We are trying togive aid to a country that needs it,while also trying to dispel Ameri-can stereotypes in the Muslimworld.

Cordova-Hoyos will be in Tajik-istan for six weeks, where shewill work with children and cre-ate a website for the IRODA or-ganization. She will also chroni-cle her journey in a blog.

During her time in Tajikistan, she hopes to provide aid to thechildren and parents who wouldotherwise have no help and tospread the word about IRODA.

At the ground level, whatIRODA stands for is important, she said. This is seen even in theorganization's name. IRODA,while an acronym for Parents ofChildren with Autism Initiative, also means willpower in Tajik.

Cordova-Hoyos expects thatthis experience will change her

life forever and hopes she will beable to impart some of the knowl-edge she gains on the Voorheescommunity.

I will be giving presentationsin Voorhees and at TCNJ when I

return to show that being a Mus-lim country does not automatical-ly mean that the country is in-volved with the Taliban or terror-ist groups or that they hate Amer-ica, she said. We are working todispel stereotypes on both sides ofthe equation.

She also hopes to inspire stu-

dents at Eastern High School totry new things.I hope to be an example that

anything can be accomplishedand that its good to get out of

your comfort zone, Cordova-Hoyos said. If someone had toldme last year that I would be livingin Central Asia this summer, Iwould have laughed. Being herehas been so different from any-thing I've ever done and I'm glad Idecided to do it.

    You never learn if everything

is always the same. Being so farfrom home also helps to showyourself that you can do it byyourself and that you arestronger than you think.

Students get involvedat science day program

    By KYLE CARNEY

    The Sun

There were no spouting volca-noes or tri-fold boards at SignalHill Science Day on May 30. In-stead, students got the chance toexperience presentations from ex-perts in their fields, covering thespectrum of scientific principles.

Liz Byham, the coordinator ofthe event, put together a programthat would interest students andget them involved in the sessions, rather than just listening to them.

We have sessions for each agegroup, Byham said. The presen-ters do their presentations first, and then the kids have the chanceto do some hands-on learning inthe second half of the sessions.

The sessions included presen-tations about recycling, the solarsystem, nature and even yoga.

Aaron Krause, president, CEOand inventor of Scrub Daddy, wasone of the many volunteers whocame to present.

I volunteered for the eventbecause of the passion I have forinvention, which 90 percent ofthe time requires a good under-standing of science and howthings work, Krause said. Ihope my presentation will have apositive and long-lasting impacton these young minds and helpfoster the next generation ofAmerican inventors and entre-preneurs.

Another presenter, WilliamSlaven, manager of engineeringwith URS Corporation, sharesKrauses feelings about the im-portance of the sciences.

The economy has somewhatstabilized and the engineeringand construction industry is

    growing, Slaven said. Helping

to showcase the sciences to ele-mentary school students hopeful-ly gives them the interest to ex-plore and consider a future careerthat uses math and science, likearchitecture, engineering andconstruction.

In the presentations Slaven andKrause gave, students were ableto participate. Krause sees the op-portunity to get the students ex-cited about doing science at sucha young age.

Children at this age are verycurious and, like sponges, soakup knowledge and can gain a life-long love of the discipline,Krause said. This is the time tofeed that curiosity, which in turncreates a new generation of in-ventors that I believe are thebackbone of the country.

The Science Day program is di-verse enough to allow students toget a glimpse into everything, ac-cording to Byham.

    We have presenters from all

walks of life, Byham said. Itsgood for the students to see all thedifferent ways to use science. Theyoga presentation was particular-ly a big hit this year.

According to Slaven, the pre-senters have a responsibility topass on their knowledge to thenew generation.

Its important to give back,Slaven said. Engineering hasdone much for me, so in turn, Imust help engineering throughhelping others see it as a careerpath for them. I know how hard itis for children and even adults tofigure out what career or degreeto pursue So, early exposure toany and all jobs is always goodknowledge to have.
