SPRING 2013VILLAGE STYLE14

If you are like most of us, you look at

those trends coming from New York, Paris

and Milan and wonder how exactly are

you supposed to make them work for you

with the styles available in your local

stores, within your budget, and that work

with your lifestyle. For Spring 2013,

we’ll make it easy! With some help from

our friends at Buffalo Creek Cowgirls and

Versona Accessories, here are the top five

items you simply must have in your

wardrobe for Spring - Texas style:

Lace Top: Lace hasalways been

popular in Texas,

but for Spring

2013 it hit

runways world-

wide in a big way.

We love this taupe and mint lace top from

02 Collection. At & $99.00 its a piece

you can build your Spring wardrobe

around. Find this one - and other similar

styles - at Buffalo Creek Cowgirls, located

at The Village at Fairview.

Bold Stripes: Stripesare everywhere this

season, especially bold

ones in patterns like

a zig zag.

Staid pin stripes

just won’t do. This

A’reve mini (available in

two color choices) does the job and

keeps you cool in the warmer (okay

darned hot) Texas weather. Stop by and

see the gals at Buffalo Creek Cowgirls to

pick yours up - just $74.99.

Tip: You can also combine bold stripes

with another of the seasons hottest trends -

black and white - for an ultra stylish look.

Try vertical wide stripes or

stripes with multiple widths

and directions combined!

Sporty Dress: They’renot just for tennis

anymore - and they don’t

have to be boxy. Check

out this style from

Mechant, available for just

$107.99. The lace

makes it feminine while

the Sabrina neckline shows

off your shoulders. The

flirty skirt has a sporty shape,

but it’s pretty! This is the kind

of piece that you can build a

wardrobe around - pair it with

a jacket for work, wear it with

boots or with mix with sparkly flats for a

casual night out. And speaking of flats....

Flats & Low Heels: Move overskyscraper heels from

seasons past, flats and

low heels ruled the

runways at the Spring

fashion shows. In Texas

that means boots and flip

flops. Everyone in Texas

should have at least one

pair of boots - invest in

the right ones and they’ll last

for years to come. We love these red

and turquoise ones from Old Gringo -

Ah Spring! It signals the arrival of mild

weather, blooming flowers, and the latest

trends from the fashion capitols of the world.

Its the best time of year to add to your

wardrobe, especially in a warm weather

market like North Texas where Spring and

Summer fashions and accessories often

arrive in stores at the same time.

Cowgirls also carries a

great selection of flip flops - Texas style.

We love these flips with fringe and

crystals from Cowgirl Jewels - $44.99.

Buffalo Creek Cowgirls also carries

Yellow Box flips in a wide variety of

styles, so you can have the comfort of flip

flops that are so cute you really can wear

them anywhere!

Statement Sunglasses

& Necklaces: Don’t forgetthe accessories! This

Spring, accessories are truly statement

pieces. Sunglasses have fashionable

prints and fun new shapes for the lenses.

We love this wide-striped pair in orange

and pink (two of this season’s hot colors)

from Versona Accessories because of the

wide round lenses and curled side pieces -

and for the 100% UV protection.

Most styles start at just $7.99. You

can also make a statement this Spring

with necklaces, featuring bold colors,

chunky stones, and fun

patterns. Stop by

and visit the folks

at Versona

SPRING 2013VILLAGE STYLE16

As the Spring semester gets underway

there is one thing on every young senior

student’s mind - and it isn’t SAT

prep…it’s PROM! Prom prep is another

right of passage and, for many, it is a

mother-daughter bonding moment as

they hit the stores, pause for lunch, and

giggle knowingly as they devise a plan

for keeping the receipt away from Dad.

Here are some tips for helping your

daughter have an amazing prom

shopping experience from the experts at

Terry Costa.

Fashion First

For many girls, their prom dress is their first

formal gown. It’s one of their first chances

to showcase their sense of style in a formal

setting and take their look to the next level.

The last thing any prom shopper wants to

face (Mom included) is the unexpected, so

its a good idea to have some basic

agreement about things like

best styles and budget

before hitting the shops.

Pre-Shop

By all means, do some pre-

shopping by checking out

styles and colors on the

web, but buyer beware. It is

not uncommon for web sites

that offer prom dresses to

accept your order and

payment without first

confirming they can actually

get the dress you love from

the designer in time. Most

of the time you won’t even

know there’s

a delay (or

worse,

cancellation)

until it is too

late to come

up with

“Plan B.”

Shop Early

We can’t say it enough: Start early!

Even as you read this, the smartest prom

shoppers are already hitting the shops

looking for the latest fashions, hottest

styles and most up to date colors. Prom

gowns are already on the shelves and

selling well so be sure to shop early and

avoid disappointment.

Shop Local

Stick to the local boutiques (like Terry

Costa) and enjoy the experience you can

only have in an actual store with actual

consultants sharing their real-world

expertise. You won’t be disappointed.

If you are fashion challenged and

frustrated with the gap between Mom’s

expectations and daughter’s wish list, an

experienced consultant can make all the

difference. Consultants are trained to

help you and your daughter find the

perfect dress for her and can often help

foster agreement between Mom and

daughter about what looks and fits best.

Take Time To Accessorize

The best way to take a gown from good

to gorgeous is to focus on the little things -

like shoes, jewelry and handbags. These

little details aren’t little at all and will take

your daughter’s look to the next level. The

best shops have accessories and shoes

right there in the store making one-stop

shopping a breeze. Don’t underestimate

the power of a knowledgeable consultant

with years of experience

dressing and accessorizing.

They’ll help you and your

daughter choose the

perfect pieces that will

complement the gown,

not compete with it

and achieve a look

that everyone will love.

Don’t Forget The Handbag

You should never send your daughter out

the door on prom night without a

handbag for all her necessities. So many

young ladies forget to choose a handbag

before they check out and end up

regretting it when prom night comes. All

the little necessities (lipstick, powder,

house key, phone, money...) add up.

Safety comes first and you want to be sure

your daughter has a comfortable and

stylish place for her phone, some

cash and her keys in case of an

emergency. Make sure that a

handbag that compliments the

gown is on your list so both you

and your daughter won’t have

to worry about a thing.

Don’t Forget About Alterations

Fit is everything when it comes to formal

wear. It can make or break the look with

just a quick stitch. Does the gown have

a train? Ask your fit expert about adding

a bustle - this simple fix will keep the

train off the floor when it’s time to dance

the night away! Tightening loose straps

will prevent your daughter from tugging

on her top all night long (not a good

look) and a hem is a must-have for petite

girls! Don’t underestimate the power of

a well-fit gown. Budget it into the final

price and make the look prom perfect.

Prom Night

When it’s time to get dressed, have your

daughter put her gown on before she

straps on heels and accessorizes. This

way she won’t snag the gown with

beautiful bangles or leave a big footprint

(or put a hole) on the hemline. Tell her

to step into the gown feet first (barefoot)

so she doesn’t have to worry about

smearing makeup or deodorant on it.

Have her wear a button-down shirt for

hair and makeup and she won’t have to

pull anything over her head,

endangering her ‘do! You’ve worked

hard together to get to this point so enjoy

every moment - and take lots of pictures!

Wine Walk is back - and better than

ever. One of our most popular

events, Wine Walk will be held at

The Village at Fairview in March

and April as a Spring Wine Walk

series. The three part series will

be held on March 21, April 4 and April 18, 2013 from 5:00 -

8:00 pm and will feature a sampling of wines from a different

winery at each event. Representatives from each winery will be

on hand to answer your questions about the wines, recommend

food pairings, and even recommend the order that the wines

should be sampled for the ultimate tasting experience.

Each event will feature food samplings, special shopping and

dining discounts, and prizes as well as some

special surprises. So mark your calendar and

follow along on Facebook for details.

PS: For all of our Beer Walk fans, you have not been forgotten.

NAME: Brandi Breaux

OCCUPATION: Owner/Baker -

Bliss Cupcakes & Confections

HOW MANY YEARS AT THE

VILLAGE AT ALLEN: 1.5 - Bliss

opened November 2011.

FUN FACT: Brandi is the

mother of TRIPLETS, born in

July 2012.

WHEN DID YOU BECOME

INTERESTED IN BAKING?

Twelve years ago, I was

planning a bridal shower for a

friend. I knew then that I

wanted to open my own

baking business. My passion

for entertaining and hosting

parties led me to baking and I

realized that I could take cake

to another level by using my

imagination. I took courses

and decorating classes over the

years to learn how to translate

my creativity in to cakes - and

now cupcakes.

WHY CUPCAKES? I baked

and made cakes for events and

birthdays and everyone always

wanted me to make cakes for

them. When cupcakes became

a big hit, I tried them at a lot of

places and decided that if they

could do it, I could do it!

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE

CUPCAKE? Do I have to pick

one? It’s ever changing.

Today, I would say the

Cinnamon Twist. It is often

overlooked by the traditional

classics but its such an amazing

cupcake.

WHAT OTHER TREATS DOES

BLISS OFFER? We also offer

cakes, which are a huge

passion of mine, as well as

cake pops and parfaits.

Find Brandi at Bliss Cupcakes

& Confections at The Village at

Allen just across from The

Grove. Be sure to ask about

special seasonal flavors as well

their “Make Your Own

Cupcake” birthday parties!
