We envision a school community of respectful, responsible, and resilient life-long learners working towards their full potential.

Our mission is to engage students in high levels of learning and empower them to be active learners in a safe, inclusive environment.

We will encourage community members to take risks, think critically, work collaboratively, and find joy in learning.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Vallejo Mill Community,

I can’t believe we’ve already been in school for a month. It was such a

pleasure seeing so many families at Back to School Night on September 18! It

was a very successful evening! A special thank you to all who attended and to

all who supported the Book Fair! We raised approximately $7,000 that will

benefit our students and put new books in our library. I appreciate our

librarian, Lisa Rozsel, for all her efforts and for making reading fun for our

students. Our staff and PTA welcome your continued support with upcoming

events as well.

This year, our school will have a Halloween Parade

on October 31 at the end of the school day. It will

begin at the primary yard at 12:45 pm and end at the

upper yard. It will be a fun way to end the month

and build community. Students may wear costumes to school. However,

please do not send your child to school wearing clown or bloody costumes.

Also, toy weapons of any kind are not allowed.

We highly encourage all students and their families to participate in PTA’s

biggest fundraiser of the year, the Dolphin Dash - Color Fun Run, on

November 9! Money raised will go towards a shade structure over the outside

tables, as well as funding for class supplies and field trips.

Progress Reports go home October 12. These reports are used to inform you

and your child of his/her progress mid-way through the trimester. Please talk

to your child about their progress in school and praise them for their successes.

If your child is struggling in any area or you have questions/concerns, please

contact your child’s teacher. There is still time for your child to improve before

the end of the first trimester, which is November 9. Report Cards will be

discussed and given out at the Parent Conferences, the week beginning

November 13 (11/12 is Veteran’s Day Holiday). There will be a scheduled

conference time arranged by your child’s teacher.

Have a fabulous Fall!

Everyday Counts:

Attend Today

Achieve

Tomorrow!

Attendance Tips of the Month

Absences can affect the whole classroom if the

teacher has to slow down learning to help children

catch up.

Try to plan medical appointments and extended trips

when school is closed or not in session.

Red Ribbon Week

Promoting a healthy, drug-free lifestyle!

Red Ribbon week is October 23-

31. The theme this year is: Your

Future is Key so Stay Drug Free.

We encourage our students to wear red on Friday,

October 26, instead of the Vallejo Mill shirt. They will be

getting red ribbon bracelets to wear throughout the

week.

ABSENCES AND TARDIES If your child is absent from school, please call the attendance line at 793-1441 using Option #7 to report the reason for the absence the day your child is absent from school.

It is important that your child arrives to school on time each and every day. Our expectation is that parents will assist their child to prepare for school every morning so that he/she does not miss any valuable instructional time.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH ASSEMBLIES

Near the end of every month, we

have Student of the Month (SOM)

Assemblies for upper and primary

grades to recognize students’ positive

scholarly habits and character traits, and demonstrating

Tribes Agreements. We also have a random “Caught

Being Good” drawing, in which several students receive a

prize and get the opportunity to have lunch with the

principal.

GATE Information 2018-2019 Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) provides support for gifted and talented (GATE) students through differentiated instruction. We believe that differentiated instruction not only serves the needs of our exceptional students, but also enhances the entire educational program for all students. All 3rd grade students will have the opportunity to be tested for GATE. The process is automatic and does not require parents to initiate it. Any student whose parent does not want their child to participate in testing must submit a written request to the Assessment and Accountability Department, 4210 Technology Drive, Room 280, Fremont, California 94538, no later than January 15, 2019. The request may be in the form of email, letter, or the optional form available in the district office. Requests submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. GATE testing for 3rd grade students will occur between February 4 – February 15, 2019.

Students in 4th or 5th grade who have not taken the GATE assessment at FUSD have the option to take the GATE assessment. These might be students who are new to the district or who were opted out of GATE testing in 3rd grade. If your 4th or 5th grade child is eligible for GATE testing this year and you would like them to be assessed, please submit a written request to the Assessment and Accountability Department by January 15, 2019. Fifth grade is the last opportunity for students to be assessed with the GATE test. 4th and 5th grade students will be tested between February 19-March 15, 2019.

Students in 5th or 6th grade who were not identified in an earlier grade may be considered for GATE identification through the professional judgement process. Teachers and/or parents may nominate students. A completed Nomination Form must be submitted to the Curriculum and Instruction Department, 4210 Technology Drive, Room 260, Fremont, California 94538 between November 1, 2018 and January 15, 2019. Additional information and forms are available in the student’s school office and may also be downloaded from the Curriculum and Instruction Department website.

Drop off and Pick up Parents, please be mindful of

kinder dismissal and drop offs.

You can start to wait at the

pickup loop around 12:15 after

kinder release and drop offs are complete.

Please inform whoever picks up your child.

This is for the safety of our students.

Back to School Traffic

Safety Tips

The Fremont Police

Department has some

important reminders about traffic & pedestrian

safety.

- Slow down and be especially alert in

residential neighborhoods and school zones.

- Remember to stop for pedestrians who are

trying to walk across the street in a crosswalk.

- Take extra time to look for children at intersections, on medians, and on curbs. - Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. - Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours. - Never pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights/stop sign. This is a serious safety concern as children are entering/exiting the bus. - Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Put down your phone and don’t talk or text while driving. - If your child’s school has a pick-up/drop-off valet system, obey the rules and volunteers running the program. - Only park in designated parking spaces. Do not block driveways, park in front of fire hydrants, or park in no-stopping/red zones. - Please be considerate of neighbors when you are dropping off and picking up your children.
