1 Introduction

This manual provides all the information you will require to use and safely operate your SWIFT Wind Turbine™.

The SWIFT Wind Turbine™ is the world’s first rooftop mounted wind turbine designed to be safe, silent and reduce CO2. It has been designed for use in almost any environment and operates in urban, rural, marine and high altitude locations.

The system comes complete with an electronic control system which will maximize the energy available to you from the wind, whilst also ensuring that the turbine operates safely, in even the strongest of winds.

CAUTION: In order to ensure the safe operation of your SWIFT Wind Turbine™ and avoid personal injury, please ensure you fully read and understand the safety section in this manual.

If you have any further questions after reading this document, please contact your authorized dealer/distributor.

2 Safety Information

To ensure safe operation of the SWIFT Wind Turbine™ and to avoid any injury, or risk of electric shock, ensure that you read and understand the following precautions.

Caution: Never approach the turbine when in operation.

Caution: The SWIFT Wind Turbine™ must only be installed by a suitably qualified and approved technician. The system contains no user serviceable parts. Please contact your authorized dealer/distributor if there are ever any problems with the device and never try to mend or modify the system yourself.

Every effort has been made in the design of the SWIFT Wind Turbine™, to ensure the turbine operates as safely as possible. There are however, inherent dangers involved with any electrical and/or mechanical device - so please make safety your primary concern and try to be aware of any such hazards at all times.

2.1 Mechanical Hazards

The rotor of the SWIFT™ can rotate at very high speeds and its substantial inertia means that it can present a serious mechanical hazard.

The turbine will have been safely mounted by an approved installer, in a location such that personnel will not come into contact with it during everyday activities. However, please ensure that the main turbine switch or isolator is in the ‘brake’

Page 5: US-Owners Manual MK2 V6-B · Swift Wind Turbine Owners Manual MK2 V6 - 7 - Cascade Engineering, Inc. p. 866.544.5520 f. 616.975.4717, 4 Operation 4.1 Installation Caution: The SWIFT

position (see section 4.5) if work is to be carried out in the vicinity of the SWIFT™ turbine.

Although the SWIFT™ turbine is designed to be maintenance free, brief visual inspections should be carried out periodically by the owner (once/twice per annum), and any irregularities reported immediately to your authorized dealer/distributor.

2.2 Electrical Hazards

A number of steps have been taken in the design process to ensure that the SWIFT™ presents a minimal electrical hazard. When the electrical system of the building is being worked upon, the turbine should be isolated from the mains supply to prevent any chance of electrocution. This requirement is detailed on the warning sticker mounted both on the inverter and the fuse board / distribution board. The turbine is isolated either with a dedicated isolator in the distribution board or with an external isolator both of which will be labeled.

The grid tie inverter is designed to be mounted indoors and will have been safely installed by an approved installer in a suitable location. The enclosure does not have the requisite ingress protection to be sited outdoors and thus should never be moved to an outdoors location. Do not expose the Inverter to rain, moisture or water. Ensure that objects and liquids do not enter the Inverter box. Do not expose the Inverter to excessive sources of heat, such as near stoves or other heat-generating appliances. The Inverter should not be operated in ambient temperatures below -4°F (-20oC) or above 122°F (50oC).

The Inverter will have been mounted on a flat, vertical surface and should not be moved once installed by the approved installer. It should also be located in an area with suitable ventilation. Do not impede the free flow of air around the Inverter and always allow at least 4 inches (10cm) of free space around the unit.

This product is manufactured to comply with:

• International Standard IEC 1400-2 (BS EN 61400-2), IEEE 929 for the safety of small wind turbines.

• IEEE 519 for power quality.

• The electronic controller has been designed and tested for EMI suppression and is

LVD directive and EMC directive compliant.

Modifications to any part of this equipment, which is not expressly approved by the manufacturer, will void any warranty, user rights or authority to operate this product.

3 Product Description

3.1 Package Contents

The parts shown in the figure below will be supplied by your approved installer.

Package Contents

3.2 SWIFT™ Turbine

The SWIFT Wind Turbine™ is the world’s first silent, building-mountable wind turbine. Capable of offsetting your demand for electricity the SWIFT™ offers a cost effective renewable energy source for on-site power generation. The turbine itself comprises:

• 2 meter diameter, molded, five bladed rotor – the innovative design allows for near silent operation, making the turbine suitable for installation on residential and commercial dwellings

• White nacelle, housing the generator and on-board electronics – for electricity generation

• Innovative twin-vane progressive furling mechanism - maintains the systems integrity and safety in high winds

The turbine is usually optimally mounted at the highest point of a roof, in a position which benefits from maximum prevailing wind, but it will work effectively in any location with sufficient wind resource. The mast is a sixteen foot (five meter) aluminum pole and a minimum clearance of two feet (0.5 meters) is necessary between the rotor and roof. The custom designed mounting system ensures minimal transmission of vibration from turbine to building.

The SWIFT™ will operate automatically around the clock.

3.3 Grid Tie Inverter

This Grid Tie Inverter is housed in a white steel enclosure which prevents any electro-magnetic emissions which could interfere with television/radio signals and medical devices.

Grid Tie Inverter

The Inverter allows the optimum amount of power to be taken from the turbine under all wind and loading conditions, and contains multiple safety systems which apply a brake signal to the turbine in the unlikely event of a failure. The LCD display provides information about current operating status, as well as energy and power generation. The Inverter also controls the connection of the turbine to the electricity grid. Any energy generated, which is not used on the premises, is fed into the grid. The Inverter will be mounted by the installer inside the building.

4 Operation

4.1 Installation

Caution: The SWIFT Wind Turbine™ must only be installed by a suitably qualified and approved technician. The system contains no user serviceable parts. Please contact your authorized dealer/distributor if there are ever any problems with the device and never try to mend or modify the system yourself.

The SWIFT™ turbine will have been mounted on a high-strength mast fixed to your building using four brackets, or on an aluminum stand if it is on a flat roof (both incorporate vibration absorbing mounts). The mast and stand have been specifically designed for building-mounting the SWIFT™ turbine and have been tested to ensure structural integrity under extreme wind loadings – they must never be replaced or modified. The electrical wires from the nacelle are fed through the building by the approved installer and connected to the Inverter. If you have the grid-tie variant of the SWIFT Wind Turbine™, a further wire will have been installed between the grid tie inverter and your electrical consumer unit. A dedicated isolator allows an approved technician to electrically isolate the SWIFT Wind Turbine™, should maintenance or repair work be necessary. For your records, the approved installation contractor will add details of the location of each of the above components to the end of this manual in the Installers Notes & Installation Certificate section.

4.2 Normal Operation

The turbine rotor will only start spinning fast when the inverter is connected to the grid. The rotor of the SWIFT™ turbine will begin to rotate at a wind speed of approximately 5 mph (2.3 meters per second). An average wind speed can be dramatically reduced by local obstructions (trees, chimneys, buildings, etc), which cause the localized flow of wind to become turbulent and subsequently lose energy. The SWIFT™ has been designed with these conditions in mind, however it must be noted that they will have an effect on performance. Equally, a site with a high average wind speed will typically give a high power yield per annum.

The SWIFT Wind Turbine™ is designed to operate autonomously in all conditions. When running in normal operation, the SWIFT™ turbine and Inverter do not require any user attention. All of the on-board and remote electronic controls will ensure that the system is operating safely and efficiently.

4.3 High Wind Operation

The SWIFT Wind Turbine™ design incorporates several innovative features to allow it to safely withstand very high wind speeds. The same aerodynamic furling mechanism which ensures that the turbine tracks the prevailing wind, is also designed to turn the rotor out of the wind when the wind speed increases beyond a pre-defined limit.

In excessively gust y high wind the turbine may lock down to prevent undue wear and tear on the mounting system. In this case the turbine will automatically reset when the

rotor has come to a full halt for more than 5 seconds. If the turbine doesn’t automatically reset please perform a manual reset.

4.4 Grid Tie Inverter - Operation

The Inverter has been specifically designed to optimize the amount of energy drawn from the SWIFT™ turbine. It also maintains the stability and safety of the SWIFT™ turbine in high winds. This high wind electronic control is backed up by the passive, on-board, aerodynamic control (i.e. requires no user attention). Together, these systems will maintain the safety of the SWIFT™ turbine in excessively high wind and storm conditions.

7 Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there is no Kilowatt hours displaying on the Grid Tie Inverter?

The SWIFT Electronic Control System (Inverter) will display how many kilowatt hours your turbine has produced since installation.

How can I tell when the wind is strong enough to power the Inverter and produce useful electricity?

As a general guide, if you can individually focus on the blades of the rotor as it is spinning, the wind is not strong enough for normal turbine generation. If the blades appear to blur together to form a visible disc, the turbine will be spinning fast enough to see the kilowatt hours control box display and pulsing green lights (which indicates the power generation strength).

The rotor is still turning slowly even though I have switched the brake on and the inverter is not connected?

In high winds or when the manual brake is engaged on the SWIFT Inverter, the turbine will electronically brake. The rotor will not slow to a standstill when braked – it will in fact continue to spin but at a very slow, safe speed.

What happens to the SWIFT system in the event of a grid power cut?

The US electricity supply reg ulations state that a micro generator such as your SWIFT turbine cannot be allowed to supply electricity into your electricity system in the event of a loss of supply from the National Grid. This is because of the potential dangers of having a live generator attached to a system on which repair work may be being undertaken. Therefore, in the event of loss of power from the National Grid, your SWIFT Wind Turbine™ will automatically disconnect and no power will be available from it. Once the National Grid connection has been re-established, the SWIFT Wind Turbine™ will automatically re-connect and resume normal operation.
