VOLUME 38, NO. 1 THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF Message From Leadership Y ou may have seen the “Local First” banners hanging from the light poles on Silver Spur Rd., or read an editorial in the PV News exhorting you to shop, dine, and do business on the Peninsula, and wondered “Does my decision to shop at a big box store, eat at a fast food restaurant, or spend a long weekend at a resort off the Hill really make that much difference?” It does! Even in a primarily residential, suburban community like the Peninsula, local businesses play a big role in contributing to our quality of life. Sometimes that role is direct, as in the millions of dollars of tax revenues that flow directly from local businesses into city coffers. In Rancho Palos Verdes $3.5 million, or over 15% of General Fund revenues, comes directly from taxes on local businesses. Of that, well over $2 million comes from the Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) paid by Terranea and by the Value Inn on Western Avenue; Another $1.14 million comes from sales tax paid on purchases at local businesses, and nearly $350,000 comes from golf taxes paid at Terranea and the Trump National Golf Course. Rolling Hills Estates gets nearly $1 million, or 15% of its General Fund revenue, from sales tax. Imagine the impact on public safety, roads, and city services if the businesses that generate this revenue were to go away! And the contributions made by our local businesses go well beyond the tax revenues. If you are involved with any of the non-profit organizations on the Peninsula you know how generous our local businesses are – they sponsor our fund-raising events and advertise in our event programs; donate money, auction items, food, and time; or provide goods and services at a substantial discount. Thriving businesses can afford to be this generous, struggling businesses can’t. So, the next time you have the opportunity to choose where you will spend your hard-earned dollars, please remember “Local First”!
