Observatory – building for observing the sky

Basin – bowl shaped area

Chinampa – artificial island built by the Aztecs

Dike – a wall to hold back water

Aqueduct – a canal or pipe that carries fresh water

Slash-and-burn agriculture – farming method in which trees and other plants on a plot of land are cut down and burned and ash is used for fertilizer

Quetzal – colorful tropical bird

Hieroglyphic – symbol that stands for a word, idea, or sound

• Developed first system of writing around 600 BCE

Maya Civilization

• Lived in what are today Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico’s Yucatan Penninsula

• Cities• Earliest city between 250 and 800 BCE

• Major cities of Tikal, Palenque, and Copan

• Hundreds of buildings, stone pyramids, temples, and palaces

• Societies• Nobles, middle class, and commoners

• Most people were farmers who lived in villages outside of cities and raised crops, wove cloth, made pottery, etc.

• Large trade network• Traveled inland on foot or along coast by canoe

• Traded food, cotton, cacao beans, obsidian, jade, and feathers from the quetzal

• Government• Made up of dozens of city-states (a city w/ a government that controls

surrounding territory)

• Each city had its own king

• Nobles ran the government

• Kings increased power by going to war and taking control of trade routes

• Religion• Worshipped many gods (representing forces of nature)

• Believed priests and kings could talk to gods through rituals

• Pyramids were built to be closer to gods

• Practiced human sacrifice and bloodletting

• Sacrificed prisoners of war, slaves, and children

• Priests cut themselves to sacrifice blood

• Fertile volcanic soils and water flowing from mountains

• City-state of Tenochtitlan• Aztec city on small island in Lake Texcoco in Valley of Mexico

• Built causeways to link city to shore

• Easily defended

• Canals built for transport

• Rich soil for farming and lake was rick in fish and ducks

• Built chinampas for more farming land

• Had no outlet so became salty

• Aztecs built a dike to hold back salty water

• Brought fresh water to populated side of dike

• Government• King was part of a Triple Alliance

• Included Tlacopan and Texcoco

• Supported each other with troops and control

• King made all war decisions and had complete power over his city

• Triple Alliance controlled kings of the city-states they conquered

• City-states sent tributes and payment of valuable goods

• Religion• Worshipped many gods

• Huitzilopochtli brought battle success and made sun rise

• Without human blood, he would grow weak and sun would disappear

• Sacrificed thousands each year cutting out hearts
