As the resident company of Kent State Tus-carawas Performing Arts Center, it is our

privilege to be part of the 50th-anniversary cel-ebration of the founding of this campus.

The branch of the esteemed university was founded in 1968, a remarkable year on many fronts. TIME magazine declared 1968 “The year that shaped a generation,” as its timeline con-tained so many notable events.

The Vietnam War was in full force, affecting our national psyche. Both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy were assasinated. Anti-war riots broke out in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention. And the list goes on.

On brighter notes, it was in 1968 that sur-geons in Paris performed the first heart trans-plant, and Yale University first began admitting women students. NASA launched both Apollo 7 and Apollo 8 into space.

Shirley Chisolm became the first black woman to win a seat in Congress, and Intel was formed.

And while all of this was going on, the Bea-tles formed Apple Records in New York, creating their own record label that would provide for us so many of their hit albums. The White Album, in fact, was released later that same year.

It’s that one element of an altogether pivotal year in our history that we’ll focus on as we cel-ebrate the anniversary of our local campus. The Beatles’ music shaped a generation all on its own and continues to draw new fans.

The premiere Beatles tribute band, Classical Mystery Tour, will join us October 13 to perform some of our favorite tunes—”Yellow Submarine,” “Hey Jude,” and “Live and Let Die” among them.

See you there, as we recall some of our best memories through the veil of great music.
