  • 1. Application

    RET670 provides fast and selectiveprotection, monitoring and control for two-and three-winding transformers,autotransformers, generator-transformer unitsand shunt reactors. The transformer IED isdesigned to operate correctly over a widefrequency range in order to accommodatepower system frequency variations duringdisturbances and generator start-up and shut-down.

    A very fast differential protection function,with automatic CT ratio matching and vectorgroup compensation, makes this IED theideal solution even for the most demandingapplications. RET670 has very lowrequirements on the main CTs, nointerposing CTs are required. It is suitable fordifferential applications with multi-breakerarrangements with up to six restraint CTinputs. The differential protection function isprovided with 2nd harmonic and wave-blockrestraint features to avoid tripping formagnetizing inrush, and 5th harmonicrestraint to avoid tripping for overexcitation.

    The differential function offers a highsensitivity for low-level internal faults.RET670 unique and innovative sensitivedifferential protection feature, based on well-known theory of symmetrical componentsprovide best possible coverage for windinginternal turn-to-turn faults.

    Low impedance restricted earth-faultprotection functions are available ascomplimentary sensitive and fast mainprotection against winding earth faults. Thisfunction includes a directional zero-sequencecurrent criterion for additional security.

    Additionally a high impedance differentialfunction is available. It can be used asrestricted earth fault or, as three functions areincluded, also as differential protection onautotransformers, as differential protectionfor a tertiary connected reactor, as T-differential protection for the transformer

    feeder in a mesh-corner or ring arrangement,as tertiary bus protection and so on.

    Tripping from Pressure relief / Buchholz andtemperature devices can be done through thetransformer IED where pulsing, lock-outcontact output and so on, is performed. Thebinary inputs are heavily stabilized againstdisturbance to prevent incorrect operations atfor example, dc system capacitive dischargesor dc earth faults.

    Distance protection functionality for phase-to-phase and/or phase-to-earth faults is availableas back-up protection for faults within thetransformer and in the connected powersystem.

    Versatile phase, earth, positive and zerosequence overcurrent functions, which canoptionally be made directional and/or voltagecontrolled, provide further alternative backupprotection. Thermal overload with two time-constants, volts per hertz, over/under voltageand over/under frequency protectionfunctions are also available.

    Built-in disturbance and event recorderprovides valuable data to the user aboutstatus and operation for post-faultdisturbance analysis.

    Breaker failure protection for eachtransformer breaker allows high speed back-up tripping of surrounding breakers.

    The transformer IED can also be providedwith a full control and interlockingfunctionality including Synchrocheck functionto allow integration of the main and/or alocal back-up control.

    Out of Step function is available to separatepower system sections close to electricalcentre at occurring out of step.

    The advanced logic capability, where userlogic is prepared with a graphical tool, allowsspecial applications such as automaticopening of disconnectors in multi-breakerarrangements, closing of breaker rings, loadtransfer logic and so on. The graphicalconfiguration tool ensures simple and fasttesting and commissioning.

  • Serial data communication is via opticalconnections to ensure immunity againstdisturbances.

    The wide application flexibility makes thisproduct an excellent choice for both newinstallations and the refurbishment of existinginstallations.

    Four packages has been defined for followingapplications:

    Two winding transformer in singlebreaker arrangements (A30)

    Two winding transformer in multibreaker arrangements (B30)

    Three winding transformer in singlebreaker arrangements (A40)

    Three winding transformer in multibreaker arrangements (B40)

    The packages are configured and ready fordirect use. Optional functions are notconfigured but a maximum configurationwith all optional functions are available astemplate in the graphical configuration tool.An alternative for Autotransformers is alsoavailable as a configuration template. Analogand tripping IO has been pre-defined forbasic use on the, as standard supplied onebinary input module and one binary outputmodule. Add binary I/O as required for yourapplication at ordering. Other signals need tobe applied as required for each application.

    The applications are shown in figures 1, 2, 3and 4 for single resp. multi-breakerarrangement.
