TIDBITS® SIZZLES AS THE HEAT IS ON!

by Patricia L. Cook

During the summer months in the northern hemisphere — NOW — the heat is on and many people head to beaches to enjoy the sun, sand and water. So, slather on a bit of

sunscreen as you read some Tidbits about beaches!

• Even land-locked areas boast beaches on their lakes and rivers, and people use those for summer fun. But the majority of beach fun happens on the coasts. The Atlantic, the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico and, of course, Hawaii are the largest areas of coastline for North America.

• States and provinces with the longest coastlines make the most of their beaches when it comes to tourism. Florida is the beach capital of the continental United States, but for those who are able to hop on an airplane for a beach, Hawaii is definitely a state to visit; after all, as a group of islands, the state is surrounded by water.

• A number of beaches claim to be the “world’s longest beach.” Long Beach, Washington, has a big sign proclaiming that on its beach. However, it is only about 25 miles (40 km) long. It does have some terrific claims to fame though. It is a peninsula that sits north of where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean and is where Lewis and Clark stopped on their trek across the west in 1805.

THE HEAT IS ON! (continued):• The Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery traveled more than 4,000 miles (6,437 km) on an expedition to explore the area west of the Mississippi River. The beach area that they discovered in Washington was not a sun-filled beach. In fact, the area is known for lots of rainy days. Even so, the beach, on the southwest coast of the state, is a fun spot, with more than 60 festivals and celebrations held on the Long Beach Peninsula in 2011. It is home to the World Kite Museum and also the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.

• Another West Coast community named “Long Beach” is the city of Long Beach, California, south of Los Angeles. One of its main tourist attractions is the Queen Mary, a retired ocean liner that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

• Long Beach, Mississippi, is located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It suffered a lot of damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but is still known as the “friendly city,” its moniker since incorporation in 1905.

• On the Atlantic side of the country are Long Beach Island, New Jersey, known as LBI, and Long Beach, New York. Both are islands. LBI is accessible via one bridge or by boat. Long Beach, New York, is an oceanfront island at the

southern end of Long Island, New York. It has a 3.5-mile (5.6 km) beach and a 2.25-mile-long boardwalk that was built in 1914 with the help of elephants!

• Do you know which state has the longest coastline in the continental United States? It is not Florida or California as you may guess, but Michigan. Michigan’s shoreline is 3,288 miles (5,292 km) long, including 1,056 miles (1,699 km) of island coasts.

• Do you know which country has the longest shoreline in the world? Canada. Canada also has an area named “Long Beach.” The Long Beach “unit” of beaches consists of Radar Beach, Long Beach, Combers Beach and Wickaninnish Beach, which run from north to south for 15.5 miles (25 km) and comprise the most popular portion of Pacific Rim National Park. This is the only national park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, the westernmost province of Canada. It has long, sandy beaches, rocky shoreline, a rainforest and more.

• Tofino, at the northern end of this Long Beach, boasts the highest annual mean temperature in Canada, 42 to 44 degrees F (6-7 degrees C), which is also the same as the water temperature. Wetsuits are needed for surfing, but despite the chilly water, the waves draw northwest surfers year round.

• A truly long beach that always makes the “world’s longest” beaches lists is Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh. The area is on the southeastern coast of Bangladesh and stretches for 75 miles (120 km). The country is vastly overpopulated and impoverished, with most people living in the cities. The beach is never crowded, and the humid, tropical area is shark-free!

• In the lands “down under,” Australia and New Zealand both have beaches named “90 Mile Beach,” (145 km) even though neither is exactly that long!

• The New Zealand beach is about 55 miles (88 km) long and is known for its huge sand dunes that look like the Sahara Desert. Ninety Mile Beach Marine Park in Australia, located along Victoria’s southeast coast, is a long, thin beach that actually stretches for 94.5 miles (152 km). This park is known for having the highest diversity of species of any place in the world. Scientists found 860 different species living in the sand within 12 square yards (10 m2), and 187 species in 1.2 square yards (1 m2).

• Apparently, in spite of others claiming the distinction, Praia do Cassino in southern Brazil, near the Uruguay border, is actually the longest beach in the world. It is 149 miles (240 km) long.

• Cancun, Mexico, is known for its white sand beaches and the fact that the sand stays cool. The sand is composed of microscopic plankton fossils instead of silica, like most light-colored sand.

• Opposite of Cancun’s white sand shores are the black sand beaches found in Hawaii, Alaska, Iceland and Black Sand Beach on the Lost Coast of California. Cooled lava from

past volcanic eruptions formed the sand on these beaches, hence, the black color. Like asphalt, it absorbs the sun’s heat so you’ll need to wear shoes!

• Wherever beaches are found, the tourists they draw are often a key part of keeping the adjacent towns and cities alive. Summer business sustains the economy year round for many beach areas.

• In the state of Florida, beaches may be the most important stream of tourism and revenue. A

lot of work is required to keep its beaches in good shape. Hurricanes are a major factor affecting beaches in Florida, as is erosion. In an average year, the state spends about $30 to $40 million for beach maintenance. The state collects approximately $3 to $4 billion from sales taxes paid by tourists, so they get a great return on their investment.

HOT SALSASalsa is the Spanish word for hot sauce. Whether you like it hot, medium or mild, it is a taste that has grown in popularity in North America in the last 20 years.

• The mixing of tomatoes, onions, hot peppers and other ingredients for salsa has been happening since at least as far back as the 1500s in Central and South America among the Aztecs and other cultures.

• A Spanish priest and missionary, Alonso de Molina, is credited with calling the hot sauce mix “salsa” in 1571.

• The first bottled hot sauce appeared in the United States in Massachusetts in 1807. In 1868, Edmund McIlhenny started bottling his hot sauce, Tabasco, on Avery Island, west of New Orleans. Tabasco hot sauce surged in popularity and continues to be a huge seller. Other hot sauces soon emerged, and many have been around for 100-plus years like Tabasco.

• Charles Erath of New Orleans manufactured a salsa product in 1916 called “Extract of Louisiana Pepper” Red Hot Creole Sauce. It, like Tabasco, was a hot sauce but not a dippable salsa. • In 1917, La Victoria Foods in Los Angeles started making Salsa Brava, a true salsa. It wasn’t until 1941 that Henry Tanklage formed the La Victoria Sales Company to market the first salsa hot sauces in the United States.

• David and Margaret Pace, founders of Pace Foods in San Antonio, Texas, created Pace Picante Sauce in 1947. The chunky tomato-based hot salsa quickly grabbed followers and gained market share and shelf space at grocery stores.

• David Pace actually came from a syrup-making family in Louisiana and started the company as a syrup and condiment business. Then he decided that the real “syrup of the Southwest” is Mexican salsa. Pace said it was the 1970s hippies who boosted his sales: “No question but this health stuff made the whole category explode!” Pace Picante Sauce has become an iconic tomato product like Campbell’s Tomato Soup. Campbell’s actually bought Pace Foods from the family in San Antonio in 1994 for $1.1 billion. • How about a little hot trivia? Pace Foods uses more than 25 million pounds (11,339,809 kg) of fresh jalapeños every year! They are hand picked across the southern United States and Mexico.

• Pace is not alone in the salsa field of retail sales. There are many brands and many flavors that fill grocery store shelves. There are also many Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants, as well as top chefs and gourmet restaurants, that now offer their own style of salsa all over the world.

• Salsa, while not considered “health food” per se, is definitely healthy. Whether homemade or store bought, it is low in calories, sugar, fat and sodium, and the chunks of garden ingredients even provide fiber. The main ingredients in many salsas — tomatoes, peppers and cilantro — contain vitamins A and C, and tomatoes also have potassium.

• The percentage of American households buying salsa, increased from 16 percent to 36 percent between 1988 and 1992. Salsa passed ketchup as the No. 1 condiment in America in 2000. Salsa sales have not shown any sign of slowing in 2011. It seems that our north of the border tastebuds sure love the tastes that have come from our neighbors to the south!

You Can’t Steal FirstBilly Sunday began preaching when he was 20 years old, but the congregation -- led by Cap Anson and the rest of the hardscrabble Chicago White Stockings of 1883 -- wasn’t easily converted.

Sunday had approached Anson, bragging that he was “about the fastest fielder on earth.” Anson decided to give the kid, a former track star from Ames, Iowa, a chance. Speed was integral for the early game of baseball. Home runs were rare. The leader for the team in the category was an outfielder named Kelly. He hit three all year. They called him “King.”

Sunday got off to a disastrous start: He struck out in his first 14 at bats -- still a major-league record. It occurred to members of the White Stockings that it would be hard to utilize Sunday’s speed if he couldn’t get on base.

“Hey, Sunday,” the famously animated Anson was said to have yelled from the bench. “You can’t steal first base!”Sunday eventually did turn out to be a pretty decent ballplayer (but he was a poor fielder). Even when he was struggling, Sunday stayed in the lineup because there was one place he could keep up: at the bar.

The 1884 World Series ended in a tie, and Anson was said to have blamed rampant drinking as the reason for his team’s lack of execution. Try as he might, he lamented, he could not get the team to come in early at night. Once the well-paid White Stockings hit State Street, they were in it until last call. That made it difficult for the players to find their stroke the next day.

It was on one such night that Sunday found more than his stroke -- he found God. Stepping out of a bar, he ran into a congregation of missionaries from Chicago’s Pacific Garden Mission (which still stands on State Street to this day). Immediately struck by the singing of gospel hymns, Sunday listened and waved off requests from his friends to move on to the next bar. Turning to them, he announced that he had been saved. “Boys, I’m finished with this wild life. I’m going into the service of God. I’ve seen the light!”

Sunday quit the game immediately, turning down large sums of money in the process, in order to become an evangelist. All but forgotten today, Sunday was the Billy Graham of his day, and his fiery sermons against the perils of “booze” led to more than a million converts to Christianity and the passage of Prohibition.

Sunday, like Anson, proved capable of turning a phrase, too. “Whiskey and beer are all right in their place, but their place is in hell.”Cheers!

Sand-Castle Making Is Fun for All Ages

Life IS a beach for “sandguy” and grandfather Kirk Rademaker. As an internationally acclaimed sand sculptor, he is known for his innovative designs created with sand and water on exotic beaches of the world. In 1997, he quit his career in carpentry, traded in his construction boots for bare feet, and began a fulltime career enjoying the enchantment of sand, surf and art.

“A beach filled with people is an equalizer in a society that divides people,” he says. “When beachgoers of all ages and stations of life spontaneously join together to create a sandcastle, no one cares about your title, name, rank or lack thereof.”

On vacation in Santa Cruz, Calif., I experienced the freedom he talks about as I poked around in wet sand to my heart’s content, sharing the moment with the newfound friends around me. I discovered that castle-making isn’t just for kids with pint-size pails and scoops. All ages can reawaken their inner artist and experience joy.

As Kirk guided a seaside crowd of eager onlookers and myself through the basics of sandcastle and sand sculpting, he demonstrated his basic and doable techniques for getting started. (For step-by-step photos, see the “Sandguy Kirk Rademaker Sand Sculptures” photo album at my DONNA’S DAY Facebook fan page.)

When you head to a sandy beach at a lake or the ocean, bring along the following along items, then let nature provide the rest.

Here’s the stuff:--3 five-gallon plastic buckets (available at hardware and building supply stores). Remove the base of one bucket so it looks like a wide tube.--Shovel for sand and water mixture.--Your favorite sand-sculpting tools, such as a small trowel, butter knives, spoons and scoops. Here’s the fun:

1. Fill one of the buckets with sea or lake water and bring it to the “construction site.”

2. Set the bucket with base removed firmly into the sand upside down. Fill it about two-thirds full with sand, then add water to the top. Vigorously mix with your hands. Tap the outside of the bucket; the vibrations cause the wet sand to settle and harden. Repeat with more sand and water until

the bucket is full and the sand feels very firm.

3. Tap the sides of the bucket again and gently lift it upward to reveal a large silolike sand shape. Now you have the basic building block for your castle, Mount Rushmore-esque sculpture or wacky design. When you get going, just let it expand with your imagination. The goal, according to Kirk, is that you don’t want the sand

shape to look like a five-gallon bucket any longer. Source: www.sandguy.com.***Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. HOLLYWOOD -- We’ve received a ton of mail about “All My Children” and Susan Lucci, and here’s what we’ve learned. First, Lucci is 99 percent set to become a regular on “Desperate Housewives” when it returns Sept. 25 for its eighth season. “All My Children” exits ABC on Friday, Sept.

23. Lucci started on “All My Children” when it premiered

on Jan. 5, 1970. During the show’s 41 years, she received 19 Emmy nominations, winning once. Can “AMC” survive the move without Erica Kane?

“All My Children’s” departure leaves more questions than answers. Is ABC trying to appease the soap’s angry fan base by passing it on to the unknown, unproven Prospect Park Online starting Sept. 26 to get off the hook for canceling the show? ABC claims it cut “AMC” loose because it was too expensive to produce. Can this new online network afford the production costs, or was jettisoning Lucci and her large salary part of a plan to bring costs down?

Many longtime actors on the daytime drama have not been contacted to make the move. Is the intention to feature younger, less pricey cast members in order to save more money and appeal to a younger audience online? After all, it is called “All My CHILDREN”! In true soap fashion, we’ll just have to stay tuned!

Jack Nicholson will go before the cameras in the film “Americana,” scheduled for a December 2012 release. Set in the Confederate south in l860, Nicholson will play a farmer and slave owner who flees to Brazil and finds a new love and a fresh start, only to be haunted by his past. Kate Winslet is said to be his leading lady.

And speaking of Kate, she has been nominated for an Emmy for her starring role in “Mildred Pierce,” the five-part mini-series reboot of the 1945 film that Joan Crawford won an Oscar for. HBO’s “Mildred Pierce” has netted a record 21 Emmy nominations, including one for Winslet as best actress in a mini-series. She has just completed the film version of the Broadway hit “God of Carnage” with Oscar winners Jodie Foster and Christoph Waltz and “Chicago” Oscar nominee John C. Reilly. The film will have its first showing at the Venice Film Festival in September. It was shot in Paris in February, with controversial award-winning director Roman Polanski at the helm.

Before Kate, who won an Oscar in ‘08 for “The Reader,” shoots with Nicholson, she will film “Labor Day” in early 2012 for director Jason Reitman (“Juno”). Josh Brolin will be her leading man. James Gandolfini, Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden and Jeff Daniels of the original Broadway cast were completely shut out of the film version. All we can say is, “You’d better watch your backs.” You don’t want to incur the wrath of Tony Soprano!

Cool Drinks for Hot Days

Baby, it’s hot outside! The recent heat wave has increased the need to replenish your body and avoid heat exhaustion. Sweating is the body’s way of naturally cooling itself. Keep in mind that your body is actually losing fluids as you sweat, so it is important to replace them. Water makes up about 60 percent of your body’s weight and is an important part of many body processes. Besides helping to regulate body temperature, water is present in every cell in the body and helps protect some body tissues. Water also helps to transport nutrients and aides with the elimination of bodily

waste.

By the time you become thirsty, you may have already lost 2 percent of your body fluids. Mild dehydration is when you have lost 2 percent to 5 percent of your body fluids. Symptoms of mild dehydration include thirst, dry mouth and throat, rapid pulse, low blood pressure, weakness or a lack of energy, and reduced quantity of urine. When there is a fluid loss of more than 5 percent, the body has severe reactions that include pale skin; bluish fingertips and lips; rapid, shallow breathing; weak, irregular pulse; and confusion or disorientation. It can result in shock, seizures, coma and death.

A person who burns about 2,000 calories should get about 8 to 12 cups of fluid per day. (Most women burn less than 2,000 calories, while men working outside would burn more.) That might sound like a lot to drink, but it doesn’t all have to come from drinking water. Many of the foods we eat contain a high percentage of water, and that counts as a portion of the 8 to 12 cups of needed fluid. Hydrating foods such as celery, cucumber, lettuce and summer squash are 90 percent to 95 percent water. Grapefruit, strawberries, broccoli and tomato are 90 percent to 94 percent water, and milk, yogurt, egg whites, fruit juices, apples and carrots are 80 percent to 89 percent water. Keep slices of watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and other such water-packed fruits in the refrigerator. They are excellent sources of water, sugar and electrolytes, and the perfect “grab and go” refresher on a hot summer’s day.

Keep in mind that the thirst mechanism can become weak in senior citizens, so they may need to implement a way of assuring they drink enough water. Some people fill a pitcher with six or so cups of water in the morning and make sure that they drink the entire contents by the time they go to bed. At the other end of the life span are children, who often ignore thirst cues. It is important to assure they are drinking enough fluids, especially if they’re playing outdoors. A good gauge of hydration is the color of their urine. A dark-yellow color is an indicator they are not drinking enough fluids.

Just remember that if the weather is hot and you’re sweating, that precious fluid needs to be replaced. Next time you venture out into the heat, don’t forget to pack a bottle full of this Fruity Sports Drink, or take along a package of the Homemade Powdered Sports Drink to add to your bottle of water!

FRUITY SPORTS DRINK

Using natural fruit juices adds both natural sugars and vitamins to your sports drink. Adding sea salt instead of table salt adds an electrolyte source, as the minerals of the sea are very similar to the electrolyte composition in our blood. Sea salt contains 84 minerals, including sodium, potassium, iodine, magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese and helps to replenish the minerals you lose through perspiration.

1/ can (3 ounces) frozen, unsweetened orange juice

tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice3/4 teaspoon sea salt quarts water

Using a large pitcher, mix all of the ingredients together until thoroughly combined. Refrigerate and stir to recombine before serving. Makes 2 quarts.

HOMEMADE POWDERED SPORTS DRINK

9 tablespoons organic or raw sugar3/ teaspoon sea salt1 packet unsweetened powdered fruit-drink mix

Mix together the sugar, salt and powdered fruit drink until well-combined. Place 1/3 of the mixture into each of three small resealable bags.

To reconstitute, add the contents of 1 bag to a 20-ounce sports bottle. Fill the bottle halfway with water, close and shake to mix. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake to mix again.

Alternately, add half the powdered drink to a 20-ounce bottle of water. Replace cap and shake to mix. Add the rest of the powdered drink, replace cap, and shake to mix. Makes 3 servings.

Fixing a Slamming DoorQ: My front door swings open and shut way too quickly. This means when my son pushes the door open, it bangs against the doorstop on the wall so hard I’m afraid it will crack the drywall behind it. And when he swings it shut, it slams. How can I fix this (besides teaching my son to be more conscientious about how he enters the house)? -- Ellen D., Philadelphia

A: There are a couple of things you can try. To slow down the swinging, remove the pin from the top hinge of the door. Your son can be your helper by holding the door in place while you stand on a safe stepladder to take out the pin.

Wrap the pin in clear tape -- just one thin layer. Reinsert into the top hinge, and test the door. If this doesn’t slow down the swing, wrap one more layer around the pin. This should create enough friction to stop the super-fast, free swing. You may need to reapply tape after several months, however. If the door banging shut is too loud, try using foam weather stripping to cushion the frame. Adhesive-backed foam stripping is available at home improvement stores in different widths. Try the thinnest width available.

Pre-test the stripping before gluing it down. With the paper backing still on, unroll the strip along the inside of the door frame where the door closes against it. Put a little clear tape at the top and bottom to hold it, and test the door. Does it shut easily, or do you have difficulty getting it to latch with the strip in place?

If it’s difficult, and you have the thinnest weather stripping available, try placing a small half-inch long piece at the top and bottom of the door frame and test the door again. This small amount of stripping should muffle the noise somewhat.

HOME TIP: Does your door stick or lightly scrape the floor when you open it? Tape a piece of sandpaper to the area and push the door back and forth over

it to try and sand down the bottom of the door a bit.

• You can whiten chopping boards with lemon juice. Just use the cut side of a lemon to scrub the board, let it sit for up to 10 minutes, and rinse clean.

• If you’re stuffing pillows or a child’s toy with foam-rubber chips, rub a bit of fabric softener over your hands first. The tiny pieces won’t get stuck to your hands with static, and it will smell nice to boot!

• Here’s a fun activity for the kids: Let them “paint” cookies. Using clean craft brushes or watercolor brushes, the kids can use food coloring to paint designs on cookies.

They can even paint the dough before it’s been cooked, and then see how the design spreads and settles.

• “We made our own umbrella stand by taking the bottoms off of two large coffee cans and then stacking them on top of a third can with only the top removed. We taped the cans together and covered the whole thing with leftover wallpaper, which we sealed where it overlapped.” -- I.D. in Ohio

• If you have stubborn shellac on your paintbrush, try dissolving it by soaking it in alcohol. Make sure you do this in a well-ventilated area.

• Need a funnel quickly? Double a sheet of aluminum foil and roll into a funnel shape. It works!

Broken Heart Not Just Figure of Speech

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Last December, my husband called the paramedics when I did not respond to him. They rushed me to the hospital when I began convulsing. I have no recollection of any of this. When I woke one week later, I was in the ICU. I was told that I had broken-heart syndrome. I also was told it has to do with blood pressure. Can you confirm that there is such a thing? -- A.

ANSWER: Broken-heart syndrome is for real. It’s a recent addition to the catalog of illnesses. Japanese doctors first described it, and called it Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy. Car-diomyopathy is a heart illness that affects the heart muscle, not the heart arteries or heart valves.

The classical case is one where a person develops severe chest discomfort preceded by physical or emotional stress. The emotional stress could be the unexpected death of a loved one. An EKG shows a pattern that replicates the pat-tern of a heart attack. The heart’s function is greatly com-promised. It doesn’t pump blood like it should, and that can lower blood pressure. Seizures are not included in the list of symptoms. However, a drop in blood pressure also drops the flow of blood to the brain. That can trigger seizures.

The explanation for this is a surge in the body’s stress chem-icals that affect heart function. Damage to the heart muscle isn’t permanent. The heart returns to good health in a matter of weeks.

You didn’t mention any prior stress. Do you recollect any?On the plus side, your heart arteries are in good shape, and you ought not to suffer a recurrence.

The booklet on congestive heart failure does not address broken-heart syndrome specifically, but it does detail a more common condition, its treatment and its prognosis. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$5 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have weak kidneys due to type 1 diabetes. My doctor has me eating three fruits a day and four vegetables. He limited my meat to 6 ounces daily. Does this limitation of meat benefit my kidneys? -- E.L.

ANSWER: Many times, when the kidneys aren’t working up to par (weak kidneys), doctors put their patients on a re-duced-protein diet. It slows the decline of kidney function. That’s why your doctor limited your meat (protein) intake.

ANSWER: Distilling water involves boiling water and condensing the water vapor by cooling it. Components dissolved in the water are left behind. You can drink distilled water. You will miss out on the minerals contained in most water and on fluoride added to city water, but you can get these elements in other ways.

If you chew too much sugar-containing gum, you promote cavities. Too much sugarless gum can cause diarrhea. Four sticks are not too much.

Cheaper Ways to Watch Movies at Home

For millions of families, the cost of movie night at home just went up. Netflix, the popular DVD rental company, unexpectedly raised its rates by as much as 60 percent last month. No longer can you get movies and all the streaming you want for one low price. Now the movies and the streaming have separate costs, and to get both the DVDs delivered to your door and streaming will cost more.

There are other ways to watch inexpensive movies, however, if you know where to look.

If you don’t already have a means of streaming movies, check into the Roku [www.roku.com], a nifty little streaming box. It comes in three levels: $60, $80 and $100. Price is determined by high-definition level (720p or 1080p), but all come with built-in wireless. Be sure to hunt around the settings to see all that’s offered with Roku -- more than 300 channels with music, movies and shows.

Many of the services, such as Crackle, are free. Hulu Plus and Amazon offer inexpensive access to movies. Pandora, the movie channel, is free. You’ll find EPIX movies and on-demand sports. Additionally, with Roku you’ll have access (some free) to some international movies and television shows. And yes, you can access Netflix if you have the streaming option.

If you only want to stream to your computer or mobile phone, check Zediva [www.Zediva.com] for $1.99 new movie rentals. And here’s a bonus: You don’t have to pay with a credit card on its site. You can pay with PayPal if you prefer. Bigger bonus: If you pay for a package of 10 movies, the cost drops to a dollar apiece. However, due to the way Zediva has set up its relationship with the movie studios, only a certain number of copies of a given movie are available at any one time. Read the FAQ to be sure you understand the limits.

If you’re a parent and going to be in the market for a new DVD player soon, consider getting one of the inexpensive combo DVD and VCR players. You can save money on the kids’ movies by shopping yard sales, where you can find hundreds of older VHS movies for a fraction of the cost of the DVD version. (You’ll also be less upset when the kids unwind a movie tape than you would be if they scratch a new DVD.)

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

HEATHER WHITESTONE McCALLUM

When Heather Whitestone did not react to her mother dropping pans on the kitchen floor at 18 months of age, her mother knew there was a problem. A case of haemophilus influenza as a toddler and the antibiotics used to save her life left Whitestone with a profound hearing loss.

• Whitestone’s mom encouraged her to learn to speak and read lips and discouraged sign language. She did learn sign language later.

• At age 5, Whitestone started taking ballet lessons. Her mother hoped this would improve her rhythm for speech, which it did, and it also was a huge boost to her self-esteem through the years. Ballet was her talent when she competed in the Miss America pageant.

• Born in Dothan, Alabama, in 1973, Whitestone looked to another deaf Alabaman, Helen Keller, as her role model. Keller’s determination became determination for Whitestone as well. She worked hard to learn in school, attending Central School for the Deaf in St. Louis, Missouri, for a few years when she had fallen behind in regular school. She passed six reading levels in three years, catching up with her peers. Whitestone graduated from a public high school in Birmingham, Alabama, with a 3.6 grade point average. • She won her first beauty pageant in the Miss America system as a student at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. From there, she followed up as first runner up to Miss Alabama in 1992.

• In 1994, Whitestone won the Miss Alabama contest and went to the Miss America Pageant to represent her state for

the 1995 contest. She danced a ballet to “Via Dolorosa” for her talent.

• Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford were the hosts of the Miss America Pageant when Whitestone won her title. When Regis announced the first runner up, Miss Virginia, Whitestone couldn’t hear the announcement. She didn’t know she had won until Miss Virginia turned to her and pointed as she hugged her.

• With her win, Whitestone became the first person with a disability to win the title of Miss America. Another interesting Tidbit about the 1995 pageant: The telecast lasted for three hours, the longest in pageant history. The organization highlighted its 75-year history during the program.

• During her reign, Whitestone showcased her program called S.T.A.R.S., which stands for “Success Through Action and Realization of your DreamS.” The five points of the S.T.A.R.S. program are: positive attitude, belief in a dream, willingness to work hard, facing obstacles, and building a strong support team.

• Showing such great determination to reach her goals and overcome obstacles, Whitestone is a great role model for people of all ages and abilities. She worked hours to learn to dance and speak. She didn’t let her lack of hearing discourage her from reaching her dreams.

• Whitestone has written four books since touring the country as Miss America. They are: “Listening with My Heart” (1997), “Believing the Promise” (1999), “Let God Surprise You” (2003) and “Heavenly Crowns” (2004).

• Whitestone is married and has three sons. She is a motivational speaker affiliated with the Washington Speaker’s Bureau. Some of the topics she speaks on are: achievement, Christian faith & inspiration, courage and overcoming obstacles and challenges.

• On Aug. 18, 1590, John White, the governor of the Roanoke Island colony in present-day North Carolina, returns from a supply trip to England to find no trace of the 100 colonists he left behind. The only clue to their disappearance was the word “CROATOAN” carved into the palisade around the settlement.

• On Aug. 17, 1877, William “Billy the Kid” Bonney kills his first man, an Arizona blacksmith. Just how many men Billy the Kid killed is uncertain. He reportedly once claimed he had killed 21 men, “one for every year of my life.”

• On Aug. 15, 1914, the Panama Canal, the American-built waterway across the Isthmus of Panama connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, is inaugurated. U.S. engineers moved nearly 240 million cubic yards of earth and spent close to $400 million in constructing the 40-mile-long canal.

• On Aug. 21, 1920, Daphne Milne, wife of English writer A.A. Milne, gives birth to a son, Christopher Robin Milne. When Christopher Robin received a stuffed bear

as a present, his father began writing a series of stories about the bear. Christopher Robin was immortalized in A.A. Milne’s books “Winnie-the-Pooh” and “The House at Pooh Corner.”

• On Aug. 16, 1948, baseball legend George Herman “Babe” Ruth dies from cancer in New York City. For two days, tens of thousands of fans stood in line to pay their last respects. Ruth hit a record 60 home runs in the 1927 season and led the Yankees to seven pennants.

• On Aug. 19, 1960, in the USSR, captured American U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers is sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for his confessed espionage. Only 18 months into his sentence, the Soviets released him in exchange for Rudolf Abel, a senior KGB spy who was caught and convicted in the United States five years earlier.

CORRECTION: It was recently reported in this column (as well as many other entertainment columns) that Mariska Hargitay would be in only 13 episodes of this coming season’s “Law and Order: SVU.” Well, I am happy to amend that report with news from the Big Guy himself: Showrunner and executive producer Warren Leight contacted me to dispel the rumor. He told me: “Mariska will be in all 22 ‘SVU’ episodes this season. Rumor she is leaving at 13 just wrong.” With Christopher Meloni’s Detective Stabler leaving, it’s a relief to learn Mariska’s Detective Benson will be sticking around.

Q: It seems like every other year, there is a rumor that “Jurassic Park 4” is going to made. But so far, no movie. Will it ever happen? -- Paul G., Miami

A: All signs point to “yes.” Producer/director Steven Spielberg told a crowd of enthusiastic sci-fi fans at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con fan convention

that there will be another “Jurassic Park,” and it might be only two to three years away. Steven said that he has a story and a screenwriter ready to go for the fourth movie of the dinosaur-clone series, and Steven himself will serve as producer.

Q: I really love MTV’s new teen comedy, “Awkward.” The actor who plays Matty looks really familiar. Can you tell me what else I might have seen him in recently? -- Cara D., via e-mail

A: Beau Mirchoff, 21, plays Matty, the nice-guy jock with a heart -- and it appears he also has a thing for our heroine, Jenna. You might remember Beau from “Heartland,” or from his turn as Drea de Matteo’s son on “Desperate Housewives.”

Of his year on “DH,” Beau told me: “I learned so much from all the people on that set. They are pros, and they know what they’re doing. I learned a lot from Jeffrey Nordling, who played my father, and Drea de Matteo, who was my mother. I had a big crush on Drea. I hope it didn’t read on camera. That would have been creepy.”

Playing a teen on “Awkward” has Beau remembering his own awkward time in high school: “Everything seems like such a dire situation. Like it’s the last time you’ll be able to do something. Or it’s the end of the world if you can’t go out with that girl. But it’s really not, and it’s so insignificant looking back. But you’re growing up and you’re figuring things out.”

Q: I was so sad to hear about the passing of singer Amy Winehouse. Do authorities know what caused her death? -- Grant D., via e-mail

A: Toxicology reports will probably take weeks to get back, so it might be a while before we know what killed the troubled songstress, who was only 27 when she passed away on July 23. Amy had publicly battled addiction, but police say there were no signs of drug or paraphernalia in her home at the time of her death.

Know Your Pet’s ‘Safe Area’

DEAR READERS: I recently received a report from the University of Missouri about a dog named “Sugar,” a Cocker Spaniel who was badly injured in the tornado that ravaged Joplin, Mo. When her owners grabbed her and ran for the safety of their basement shelter, “Sugar, sensing the increased fear of her owners, became panicky and bolted back upstairs to her own ‘safe area,” a spot under one of the beds.’ With the tornado almost atop their house, the owners could not leave the shelter to retrieve her.

Sugar survived the tornado, although she was badly injured and had lost use of her hind legs. Veterinarians at the University of Missouri performed emergency surgery to correct the injury to her spine. After many days of physical rehabilitation and therapy, Sugar is recovering with her owners.

In addition to this encouraging story of recovery, what caught my interest was that Sugar’s owners knew exactly where she preferred to hide when something scary was happening. This doesn’t seem like much, but knowing your pet’s

favorite hiding places can be a lifesaving advantage in an emergency. With Sugar, unfortunately, this was not the case, as she was found several blocks away. There was nothing more her owners could do without putting themselves in mortal danger (something else that is important to keep in mind in an emergency).

But in a less extreme emergency, when there’s time to gather the family and pets, or when your pet is having a health emergency, you’ll be able to find your pet faster, or direct emergency personnel to where your pet normally hides, if you know where that hiding place is.
