No, it’s not anything to do with take-out Chinese in those little white boxes. This week, Tidbits features a variety of items that start with to- and go-.

TO- GO- (continued):• Experts in the game of marbles will know that the official name for the shooting marble is tolley.

• What’s the fastest healing part of your body? It’s your tongue! It’s also the strongest muscle group and the most flexible. About 3,000 taste buds make their home on the tongue. The average length of a tongue is 4 inches (10 cm).

• Back in second-century Rome, only Roman citizens were allowed to wear the toga. Before a boy reached legal age, he wore a white toga with a border of a wide purple stripe. At his “coming of age” ceremony, usually around age 14 or 15, he donned, for the first time, a plain white toga. This was known as the toga virilis.

• At age 33, J.R.R. Tolkien became a professor in the English Department at the University of Oxford. Always interested in languages, he actually invented several “artificial” languages, two of which, “Quenya” and “Sindarin,” he used in his novels. While serving with the British army during World War I, he was hospitalized with trench fever. During his confinement, he began writing fantasy tales. Years later, he published a novel he had written for his children, entitled “The Hobbit.” His publishers convinced him to write a sequel, and the result was the three-volume work, “The Lord of the Rings,” an effort that required nearly 10 years. It was published in 1954 and 1955. Tolkien continued as professor at Oxford until 1959.

• In the 1800s, totters could be seen strolling the streets of every British hamlet. Most carried a large hand-bell to announce their arrival. Who were they? They were the original recyclers, collecting people’s rags, bones and bottles.

• If you’re a lobster eater, perhaps you’ve noticed that soft green stuff inside its cavity. This substance functions as the creature’s liver and pancreas. Its official name is tomalley. Be careful if you eat it — It can contain dangerous levels of the toxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning.

• Toponymy is the study of place names. When something takes its name from a certain place, it’s known as a toponym. Well-known examples include the Oxford shirt taking its name from Oxford, England, and hamburgers being named for their city of origin, Hamburg, Germany. The province of Ontario gets its name from Lake Ontario, not the other way around. Did you know that the tuxedo takes its name from Tuxedo Park, New York? It’s believed that it was there that this formal suit was worn for the first time at the community’s annual Autumn Ball in 1886.

• The goldfish is actually a member of the carp family. There are more than 100 varieties of goldfish, and many are not gold all, but rather, brown, gray, black and white. The fad of goldfish swallowing began in 1939 on the Harvard campus and quickly spread to other colleges. Although an anatomy professor claimed that an average-sized male could safely consume 150 goldfish, the record soon shot up to over 300 fish at one sitting. • The word “gobbledygook,” which means “unclear

• If you have an item that is 24-karat gold, then it is considered pure gold. An object that is 18-karat gold is 18 parts pure gold and six parts other metal.

• A goatsucker is actually a small nocturnal bird in the whippoorwill family. It doesn’t suck goats at all, but rather enjoys insects as its chief diet.

• Rubber-cored golf balls have been around since 1898. Prior to that time, leather balls stuffed with feathers were used.

• It’s estimated that the Bible’s Philistine giant named Goliath stood close to 10 feet (3.05 m) tall. He was soundly defeated by the young shepherd boy David with the first stone in his slingshot.

• Without the help of William Crawford Gorgas, the Panama Canal might never have been built. Gorgas was a physician who ordered the removal of mosquitoes’ breeding areas, thus considerably slowing down the spread of yellow fever and malaria.

• If your diet is deficient in the mineral iodine, it’s possible that you could develop a goiter, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. You will be advised to eat more fish and use iodized salt.

• The male gorilla has been known to weigh 450 pounds (204 kg) and stand 6 feet (1.83 meters) tall. Although they appear vicious and threatening, they are in fact shy and friendly and enjoy companionship. The average gorilla can generate about 20 different sounds, from whimpers to roars. Believe it or not, a gorilla shows its anger by sticking out its tongue!

• Nguba is the African word for “peanut.” So THAT’S where we get our word “goober”!

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

RICK HANSENBritish Columbian Rick Hansen had a dream — to represent Canada at the Olympic Games. But his life took a turn that he never could have imagined. Read on to see how Hansen triumphed over adversity by following his motto: “If you believe in a dream and have the courage to try, great things can be accomplished. Anything is possible.”

• As a high school student, Hansen was a natural athlete and had excelled in five sports, winning all-star awards in each one. In his free time, he was an avid fisherman. One simple decision after a fishing trip changed his life. He and his best friend hitchhiked home, taking a ride in the back of a pickup truck. On a winding road, the driver swerved, skidded and went off the road, and the two teens were thrown out of the truck. The friend walked away from the crash, while Hansen received a spinal cord injury, and at age 15, was

paralyzed from the waist down. • Hansen spent seven months in rehabilitation in Vancouver, B.C., and after high school graduation, enrolled at the University of British Columbia. There he became the first disabled student to receive a degree in physical education. It was

at the university that Hansen met another disabled athlete, Terry Fox, who had lost a leg to bone cancer. Fox had an ambitious plan to run across Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately, Fox’s cancer returned, and he was forced to halt his mission. But Hansen was so inspired by Fox’s

courage, he made plans to circle the world in his wheelchair to raise money and awareness for spinal cord injuries.

• Hansen’s impressive journey, dubbed the “Man in Motion World Tour,” began in March of 1985 in Vancouver. His trek covered 34 countries on four continents, a distance of more than 24,850 miles (40,000 km). It was 26 months before he pulled back into Vancouver, having raised $26 million for his cause.

• Yet the Man in Motion tour is only one of his incredible achievements. Hansen has been the victor in 19 international wheelchair marathons. He is a wheelchair volleyball and basketball national champ and winner of six Paralympic medals. At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Hansen was selected as the torchbearer to bring the flame into the stadium.

• Hansen continues his work as an advocate for those with spinal cord injuries. He serves as president and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, which has raised upwards of $200 million for this important cause. He has co-authored two books, one about his Man in Motion adventure, and another entitled “Going the Distance: 7 Steps to Personal Change.”

• As an in-demand motivational speaker, Hansen particularly enjoys making a difference in the lives of young people. Along this line, he has served as a high school basketball and volleyball coach. Throughout his adversity, he has maintained that “a shattered spine is not a shattered spirit,” and in his words, “Courage is being able to recognize and overcome fear or act in the face of danger, and to do so with dignity and integrity.”

SISTER ACT“Yessir, mister, she’s my sister!” Here we present some details about some famous female siblings, past and present.

• You’re probably not familiar with the names of Jayne and Joan Boyd, but more than likely, you’ve seen their faces. They were the original “Double your pleasure, double your fun” Wrigley’s gum Doublemint Twins. The girls began their Wrigley’s advertising stint in 1959 at age 21, a job they held until 1963. “People would stop and talk to us… grandmothers, small children, they all knew us,” said the twins. You can still occasionally spot the girls’ faces on some of Wrigley’s new ads, which highlight past twins.

• Baby boomers might remember the names of Nan and Flossie from the girls’ 75-year history in children’s novels. These two sisters each had a twin brother — 12-year-old Nan was twins with Bert, and 6-year-old Flossie’s brother was Freddie. Together the four, known as the Bobbsey Twins, enjoyed many adventures in the fictional community of Lakeport throughout 72 volumes, making the stories the longest-running series of children’s fiction.

• The tennis-playing Williams sisters have five Olympic gold medals between them — Serena with two and Venus, three. Serena leads her sister in career earnings; in fact, Serena has won more money than any woman athlete in history. The sisters were home-schooled and coached by their parents and both turned pro at age 14.

• Thousands of U.S. troops were entertained during World War II by the Andrews Sisters, Laverne, Maxene and Patti. Their distinctive Dixieland swing style of music included such hits as “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” These “Wartime Sweethearts” had more than 1,800 recorded songs to their credit as well as appearances in 16 movies.

• The Dionne family of Callander, Ontario, already had six children when they welcomed the world’s first living quintuplets in 1934. Five girls — Emilie, Cecile, Yvonne, Annette and Marie — weighed in at a total of 14 pounds (6.35 kg.). When the girls were just a year old, they were removed from their home by the government of Ontario when their father agreed to accept money for

their appearance at the Chicago World’s Fair. They were featured in advertisements for everything from dolls to dishwashing liquid to war bonds, creating millions of dollars in revenue for the province of Ontario. The quints’ earnings were placed in a trust fund controlled by the government, which was misappropriated, leaving them in financial straits in their later years. During the 1990s, the three remaining quints were living together on $750 a month and approached the Canadian government for a settlement. In 1998, they were awarded a $4 million tax-free remuneration by Canadian officials. Emilie, who

became a nun, died of an epileptic seizure at age 20, while Marie perished in 1970 and Yvonne in 2001.

• Amidst gently floating bubbles and between Geritol and Aqua Velva commercials, the four Lennon sisters, Dianne, Janet, Peggy and Kathy crooned syrupy ballads to the audience of “The Lawrence Welk Show.” With their matching chiffon dresses and stiff bouffant hairdos, the California-born sisters appeared with the Champagne Music Makers from 1955 until 1967. The girls got their lucky break when Welk’s son began dating Dianne and informed his father of the girls’ potential.

By Samantha Weaver

• It was 19th-century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer who made the following sage observation: “There is no absurdity so palpable but that it may be firmly planted in the human head if you only begin to inculcate it before the age of five, by constantly repeating it with an air of great solemnity.”

• Those who study such things say that half of all money spent on food in the United States is spent in restaurants.

• If, like me, you are constantly finding excess wire hangers in your closets, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that more than 2.7 billion of them were imported in 2010 alone. • You might be surprised to learn that beer brewers in Australia are on the cutting edge of alternative energy production. They have created a “beer battery” -- the world’s first, they claim -- in which electricity is generated by bacteria consuming the waste that is created by the brewing process. • Companies today sometimes seem to go too far in advertising their products, but consider Richard Chesebrough, who invented the petroleum jelly Vaseline in 1872. In order to market his new creation as a salve for cuts and burns, he traveled around New York state demonstrating the efficacy of the product by burning his skin with acid, then applying Vaseline to the injury. A display of his past burns that had been healed with Vaseline would, in theory, convince people to buy the product.

• If you’re looking to brighten up your living space with some greenery, you might want to consider getting a bonsai tree. They live longer than any other houseplant.***Thought for the Day: “Hollywood is a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul.” -- Marilyn Monroe

Father Knows BestWith the exception of the seriously deranged or mentally ill, it is virtually inconceivable for a parent to harm their own child.

But these days we are seemingly bombarded with sordid news accounts of horrific child abuse -- and not only at the hand of strangers, but occasionally also at the hand of a parent. A father myself, the idea of hurting my child is so abhorrent that it defies description. So, instead of bringing all

of us down with that train of thought, allow me to share the story of Gerry McIlroy.

The story begins in the Irish town of Holywood in County Down, a port just outside of Belfast that is home to about 12,000 people. It begins i n a u s p i c i o u s l y enough -- a child is born to Gerry and Rose McIlroy. He is to be their only son, and he is

named Rory.

At the age of 2, after being handed a miniature golf club for the first time a few months earlier, Rory strokes a 40-yard drive down the middle of the fairway of the Holywood Golf Club.]So the story changes.

Gerry was a scratch golfer during his day, but the day Rory showed his father that golf was something he really wanted, he did what most any loving father would try and do -- give up his aspirations in order to let his son achieve greatness.Look, the sporting world -- the entire world for that matter -- is rife with tales of the overbearing father and the son who resented him. The satirical newspaper The Onion perhaps summed it up best when its recent headline read “If Only There Was a Song Describing the Bittersweet, Cyclical Nature of the Father-Son Relationship.”

But Gerry put in 100-hour weeks in order for Rory to succeed at the game of golf. At 8 a.m. he cleaned bathrooms at a local rugby club until breaking for an hour lunch at 12. Then he worked a bartending shift at the golf club until 6, broke for dinner and worked another bartending shift until midnight. All of that money (plus what Rosie took in working the night shift at a local factory) went to the kid.

So it was fitting that on Father’s Day, 22-year-old Rory McIlroy lofted the U.S. Open trophy at Maryland’s Congressional golf course after scorching the field en route to his first major victory and delivered another perfectly timed shot.

“Happy Father’s Day, Dad, this one’s for you,” he said with a grin.

Twenty years after smacking that drive up the middle of the fairway, McIlroy not only proved that he has what it takes to be a champion, he proved that he didn’t forget how to hit home.

Pets Grieve, TooDEAR PAW’S CORNER: We had two dogs for the past six years. We just lost “Sassy” two days ago. Our remaining dog, “Barry,” is so sad. How can we help him? He barely eats, and he just lays around not showing interest in anything. I realize it is soon after losing his best friend, but is this normal? We are sad also, but want to help him if we can. -- Norma in Ohio

DEAR NORMA: It’s very normal for a dog to grieve for a lost companion, and Barry is showing all the signs of deep grief: loss of appetite, depression, lack of interest in things that normally stimulate him. In a few days, he may begin pacing around the house, searching for something -- another common behavior, particularly after a dog loses a companion animal like Sassy.

Be supportive of Barry over the next few months. Give him lots of love and attention. However, don’t break his training routine or feeding routine, nor allow him to do things he normally wouldn’t be allowed to do, like climb on the furniture. He needs structure as well as support.

When Barry searches the house for her, call him over and give him a blanket or toy that Sassy liked to use and that still has her scent. Sometimes an item that reminds a pet of a lost companion is comforting. Other times the pet will reject the item -- don’t scold or force it on him.

How long will Barry grieve? Like humans, there’s no set time. Some dogs return to their old selves from two to six weeks after a loss; others take many months. And some always retain some sign that they still miss their old friend, years down the road.

Fairy RingsQ: I believe that I have two areas in my back lawn that are “fairy rings.” They have a center of green grass that is surrounded by dead grass. Is there anything I can do about this? -- Fred J., Toronto

A: Fairy rings are caused by growth of a certain type of fungi (mushrooms), which, above the surface, grow within the dead or thin area of the circle. Below the surface, a dense fungal mat is usually well established by the time the characteristic “ring” appears on the lawn. These rings measure a couple feet in diameter but gradually expand over time, to as large as 20 feet.

The rings are annoying and, like most fungal growth, are very difficult to control. However, there are options to try.One method, which can be undertaken quickly with minimal damage to the lawn, is to reduce the influence of fairy rings. Fertilize the area several times per year with nitrogen-rich fertilizer to mask the fairy rings somewhat. To stimulate grass growth in the dead areas of the rings, you’ll need to aerate and get water beneath the fungal mat (comprised of weblike mycelium fungus) that’s causing the problem. Do this by attaching a root feeder to your garden hose. Punch holes in the dying area about a foot apart and at least 12 inches deep, then insert the root feeder into the holes and saturate the ground underneath the mat with water. Repeat often. The idea is to change the soil moisture, increase airflow, and change the chemical makeup of the soil to retard fungal growth.

A more invasive option, which must be undertaken carefully so as not to spread the fungus to other parts of the lawn, is to completely remove the affected sod, cutting out an area 1 foot beyond the edge of the rings. Then, dig out the soil to 1 foot in depth. Note that the sod and soil must be completely isolated from the rest of the lawn and disposed of far away.Replace the soil with new, unaffected soil. Then either reseed or resod. North Dakota State University’s Agricultural Extension recommends reseeding rather than replacing the sod, as the risk of reintroducing the fungi is much lower.

Fungi are the most common cause of lawn disease, but they can be managed and prevented with routine lawn maintenance, including proper watering, fertilization, mowing and

ensuring the soil is aerated.

One of the hardest parts of my job is getting people to understand the basics of exercise and working out for whatever their goals are. You see I am in a specialized field that the general public has no knowledge of what they are doing.

Now many clients come with knowledge of what they think working out is and how they should go about it and all the myths that come with their incorrect knowledge. One does not train as a runner the same way one trains to gain muscle mass, momentum training is not for the woman that wants to be able to pick up her 2 yr. old, who seems to get heavier each day, and so they are many different techniques that have to do with each client’s personal fitness goals.

Aside from the various goals and methods of resistant training is the training itself. I get a tremendous amount of people that come and want to train with me for a finite period of time and the people think that after they devote that amount of time 4, 6, 8 weeks then that is all they will need to get their body back in shape and they can go on with their lives.

For some rhyme or reason a lot of prevalent thought is that one can start to workout and just get their body in better shape in 6 weeks and then that is all they will have to do to get their body where they want it to be. Well, if you have been reading this column for any length of time then you know that expectation is completely false.

Working Out is not something you do for a finite period of time, working out or resistance training is something you start and never finish it is something that must be practiced on a regular basis to receive the benefits and continued results.

You must add this to your lifestyle and you will see the results pop up in many various shapes and forms, you can carry bags from the grocery store, you can hold your child in your arms longer, you can actually lift the junk in your garage, you will feel a sturdiness to your stride and put a little pep in your step from the accumulative affects of resistant training.

So start training now and remember a muscle a day keep the Doctors at Bay!

Macular Degeneration Progress Can be

SlowedDEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have the dry type of macular degeneration. I take PreserVision with lutein tablets twice a day. I hear lutein is very good for my eyes, and I would like to take more than the 10 mg a day that I get in my tablets. I don’t know how much is safe. My doctor said he didn’t know. Will macular degeneration leave me completely blind? How long will it be before I cannot see anymore? -- C.B.

ANSWER: The macula is a small, round area in the center of the retina, the layer at the back of the eye that transmits incoming images to the brain so we can see. The macula is essential for clear, central vision, the kind needed to read, to drive and to recognize faces. Off-to-the-side vision remains.

You won’t go completely blind.

Furthermore, dry macular degeneration most often advances gradually. It’s the more common variety, accounting for 90 percent of cases. It can stay at its present level for years, even for life. Wet macular degeneration comes about from the growth of blood vessels beneath the retina. Those vessels are fragile and leak fluid. It tends to advance more rapidly.Currently no cure exists for dry macular degeneration. A combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene (or vitamin A), zinc and copper appears to slow moderate macular degeneration’s progression to a more advanced stage. Your PreserVision is one such preparation.

Lutein is a plant product that might aid in delaying the advance of dry macular degeneration. At this very moment, a large study is taking place to ascertain the place of lutein in the treatment of this common eye condition. The amount of lutein being tested in the study is 10 mg a day. Lutein appears to be a very safe substance, but I would stick with the 10 mg dose until the present study defines lutein’s place and its optimum dose.

The booklet on macular degeneration explains this prevalent eye problem in great detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 701W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please tell me about post-traumatic stress disorder. I think someone in my family suffers from it. -- A.F.

ANSWER: Having faced an event that threatened life or caused serious injury is the basis for post-traumatic stress disorder. The event keeps resurfacing in the mind with a clarity that imparts terror and helplessness, and sometimes guilt. The remembrance can happen during the day or in dreams.

An affected person stays in the alert mode at all times. He or she loses interest in life, neglects those around him or her, suffers from fragmented sleep, often erupts in outbursts of anger and is usually quite depressed. Soldiers, firemen,

Ben Affleck, who won an Oscar for writing “Good Will Hunting” with Matt Damon, has completed director Terence Malick’s (“Tree of Life”) untitled film, with Oscar winners Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”) and Rachel Weisz (“The Constant Gardener”), as well as Rachel

McAdams (“Midnight In Paris”). This summer, Affleck will star in and direct “Argo” for George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s company. It’s about how the CIA used a “Planet of the Apes” make-up artist to rescue six Americans during the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis by faking the production of a large-scale sci-fiction film. It’s based on a story from Wired Magazine and will be released in 2013.

A Michigan reader asks, “Why did ‘Gunsmoke’s’ James

Arness and his brother, Peter Graves, have different names?” Years ago, Peter Graves, of TV’s “Mission: Impossible,” sat next to me on a plane headed to the Jack Benny tennis and golf tournaments in Texas, and I asked him that very question. Peter explained, “My grandfather came to America and told immigration his name was Aursnes but they wrote Aurness, which became our family name. When my brother, James Aurness started acting, he dropped the “u” and became James Arness. When I started acting, I couldn’t be Peter Aurness when my brother was James Arness, so I took the last name of my maternal grandfather and became Peter Graves.” The last thing Peter did was narrate the computer game “Darkstar: the Interactive movie,” released eight months after he passed away. Having met James Arness, who left us on June 3, and his brother, Peter Graves, who left us in March 2010, I can honestly say that they were extraordinary dedicated actors and devoted family men. We won’t see their like again!

We reported earlier that “Will & Grace” star Sean Hayes would play Larry Fine and “Madtv’s” Will Sasso would play Curley in “The Three Stooges Movie.” Now we can tell you that Moe Howard will be played by Chris Diamantopolas. You saw him as Robin Williams in the “Mork & Mindy” TV movie, in the eighth season of “24” as chief of staff Rob Weiss, and as Frank Sinatra in the “Kennedy’s” mini-series. To check out what they’ll look like, Google the new Three Stooges film. Add “Glee’s” Jane Lynch, “Modern Family’s” Sofia Vergara, “Dreamgirls” Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, “Boston Legal’s” Craig Bierko and “7th Heaven’s” Stephen Collins, and you’ve got a great cast. It looks as if The Farrelly Brothers will give “The Stooges” the send-up they truly deserve. After this movie comes out, though, if anyone asks you to “pick two fingers,” trust me ... DON’T!

Serving the Hollywood communityfor the past 14 yearsNaturally Sweet

My sister, Marcia, loves to garden. She generously shares

her plants with me. Recently, she gave me a stevia plant as a gift. I use the leaves of this naturally sweet herb to sweeten a variety of drinks. It’s also available commercially in a granular form like sugar.

Stevia is a not-so-new sweetener that recently made its way into the U.S. market. Although Stevia has been sold in the U.S. for many years as a dietary supplement, it was not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Now that the FDA has declared its active ingredient -- rebaudioside A -- as “generally accepted as safe,” it is showing up in products like tabletop sweetener packets. PureVia (from PepsiCo and a subsidiary of Merisant, Whole Earth Sweeteners) and Truvia (from Coca-Cola and Cargill), along with some flavored waters and lower-calorie soda and fruit drinks, now contain stevia.

Leaves from the stevia plant are steeped in water and then processed into crystalline form. These crystals create a sweet taste in the mouth, but are calorie-free when digested.

As a sweetener, stevia’s extract is 250 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. This means only a very tiny amount is needed to add sweetness to a food or beverage.

As with any sweetener, there are challenges to using stevia in food products. Stevia is naturally bitter, but tastes sweet after some delay. Although it is temperature and acid stable, the natural bitterness and intense sweetness are challenges the food industry will have to overcome. Consumers will need to taste stevia and decide for themselves how well they like it.

Another possible challenge is the price. Currently, it is expensive to use stevia or its active ingredient in foods. Products containing this naturally derived sweetener may be out of many consumers’ price range.

Like other sugar substitutes, consumers need to watch for any warnings or concerns with stevia. It has been classified as safe, but it doesn’t hurt to try it out slowly to see what effect it has on individual taste and digestion.

This recipe for Fruit Sorbet uses stevia instead of sugar to sweeten the dessert.

FRUIT SORBETYou’ll need an ice cream machine for this delicious recipe. You can use any fruit juice blend concentrate of your choice instead of raspberry. This recipe also works well if you substitute one (12.3 ounce) box of silken tofu for the yogurt, along with 1 cup of milk or soymilk.

cups plain low-fat yogurt1/4 cup milk 1/ cup unsweetened raspberry juice blend concentrate, thawed1 tablespoon orange juice concentrate1 teaspoon vanilla extract3/4 teaspoon stevia sugar substitute

1 banana (optional)

Blend all ingredients together in a blender until smooth. Pour into the container of an ice-cream machine, and process according to directions. Makes 4 servings.

2. Puree blueberries or blackberries (or both) in a blender. Sift the remaining 1/2 cup of the confectioners’ sugar on top (depending on how sweet the berries are); blend until smooth. Stir in remaining 1 teaspoon of the lemon juice.

3. Dollop 1 scoop of the ice cream on top of red berry sauce in each glass. Top with a few tablespoons of the blueberry sauce and another scoop of ice cream (or two!). Top with fresh berries and any extra sauce. Garnish with berries, whipped cream, maraschino cherries and/or sprinkles, if you like. Serves 4.

Make Cheap and Sweet “Glam” Cleaning GlovesIt’s easy and fun to dress up drab latex rubber gloves with perky cuffs. Add rickrack, bows or sparkling brooches for extra bling, and your household cleaning chores won’t seem so humdrum. Your kids can help with the fabric choice, measuring and cutting.

Once you get going, make several pairs. They’re fun to tuck in a basket of items for a shower or housewarming gift for a new family on the block. A whimsical homemade gift from you and your kids!

Here’s the stuff you’ll need:• One pair of rubber gloves with cuffs in the quality and color you prefer, available at grocery and discount stores for a dollar or two.• 1/4 yard of oilcloth or water-resistant stiff fabric that is at least 36 inches wide. I found big-polka-dot fabric at IKEA. I wanted to use blue and red yardage for summer tablecloths, so I added extra fabric for the gloves. • Measuring tape, marker, scissors and straight pins• Sewing machine and thread.• A glue-gun to attach decorative add-ons such as ribbon, bows, rickrack and buttons if you wish. Or pin on a brooch. You also may decide to cut the edges with pinking shears.

HERE’S THE FUN:Directions for one glove: 1. Trim off the edge of the glove and make the cuff shorter for a comfortable fit.2. Cut fabric 4-inches wide by at least 18-inches long. If you prefer fuller ruffles, make it longer. 3. Let your child mark 2-inch intervals along the edge and then make small knife pleats at each mark. Pin and sew the pleats in place with stitches running close to the edge. Remove pins. Note: Once I got the hang of it, I created the pleats one by one as I sewed. 4. Bring the 4-inch edges of the fabric right sides together, pin and sew a 1/4-inch seam to create a circular, pleated fabric ready to attach to the glove. 5. Ease the pleated cuff wrong side out over the right side of the glove and pin in place.

(I placed the 4-inch-long seam above the thumb side of the glove.) If the pleated cuff is too large, add another pleat. Remove pins as you sew 1/2-inch from the edge.

Turn cuff over the seam and fluff the pleats. Repeat with second glove.

For extra pizzazz, use your imagination and items in your craft box to decorate the gloves with add-ons. A glue gun works quickly.

Taking the Mystery Out of Credit Scores

FICO, short for Fair Isaac Corporation, was founded in 1956 by a mathematician and an engineer who were interested in the analysis of numbers -- including credit scores. Their work gave creditors a means of predicting which customers are more or less likely to default on loans. Your score can pre-determine how you’re treated by creditors:

1. A high credit scores equates to a lower anticipated rate of default.

2. Creditors raise or lower the interest rates they offer you based on your likely risk of default.

3. The higher your credit score, the better the deal you’ll get on interest and the more money you’re likely to save over time.

The front screen of the MyFico.com website gives a perfect example of potential savings: “A 100-point difference in your FICO score could mean over $40,000 extra in interest payments over the life of a 30-year mortgage on a $300,000 home loan.”

FICO scores range from 300 to 850 and are based payment history, length of credit history, new credit you might open, amount of established credit and the types of credit. A mix of credit types -- perhaps vehicle, mortgage, credit card -- will yield a better score than all credit cards or vehicle only.

With all the lender emphasis on credit worthiness, a simple late payment can damage your credit score. The later it is, the more damage is done.

Here’s an additional credit fact: Unfair though it is, the higher your credit score, the bigger the “ding” to your credit if you do miss payments. Here is a comparison of late payment and bankruptcy at two levels of credit score and the length of time for the score to rise again:

Thirty days late: Credit score of 680 might be cut to 600-620, but can rise again in nine months. A score of 780 might be cut to 670-690, and it could take three years for the score to rise again.

Bankruptcy: Credit score of 680 might be cut to 530-550, and could take five years to rise again. A score of 780 might be cut to 540-560, and it could take seven to 10 years for the score to rise again.

For more information on keeping your credit score healthy, visit MyFico.com.

Q: I was wondering what one of my favorite TV hosts, Leeza Gibbons, has been up to lately. Is there a show on which I can catch this beautiful lady? -- Paul G., via e-mail

A: Leeza, 54, recently married her beau of almost three

years, Steven Fenton. The former longtime “Entertainment Tonight” host -- who hosts the PBS show “My Generation” -- will be back on daily TV this fall in the syndicated program “America Now,” with Bill Rancic. The half-hour daily news program will deliver short segments of timely information covering lifestyle topics like health, beauty, finance, family and home. Check your local TV listings as the Sept. 12 premiere date gets closer, and check www.celebrityextraonline.com in mid-July to read my full interview with the gorgeous newlywed.

Q: I am a longtime Don Johnson fan and would love to see him on the screen again -- any screen. Since his pilot “Mann’s World” wasn’t picked up, do you know if he has anything else in the works? -- Whitney A., via e-mail

A: If you haven’t already seen his turn on this past season’s “Eastbound & Down” as Kenny Powers’ father, Eduardo Sanchez, then you first and foremost must watch that. Then head over to Will Ferrell’s comedy website, funnyordie.com, and check out Don’s hilarious short, “Four Loko Vineyards.” Then you’ll need to wait a little while to see him in the thriller “Vineyard Haven,” which is set for a spring 2012 release. In it, Don plays an eccentric writing professor who wedges himself between a couple in distress.

***

Q: I finally saw the Sylvester Stallone shoot-’em-up extravaganza, “The Expendables,” on DVD the other night. The movie was actually a lot of fun, and I was surprised to have enjoyed it so much. I also noticed that the ending left it open for a possible sequel. Could there be plans for one? -- Jessica R., Hamilton, OhioA: You know it! The movie took in $266 million worldwide, so you can bet Sly and company want to cash in on this particular cash cow. All of the original “good guys” are rumored to be returning for the sequel, which is set for an August 2012 release. There’s no word yet on whether ex-California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to make another cameo (or perhaps a larger role this time?).

• “If you pull all the way into your garage, tack some carpet scraps to the wall that you pull in toward. It will protect the wall’s paint, and it will protect your car’s bumper if you accidentally rub the wall.” -- U.F. in North Carolina

• For dance recitals, make sure to get a recording of the music to be used. You also can videotape the practice performance and have the student watch it, pointing out the great parts and the parts that need work. -- A Reader, via email

• To stop runs in hose or tights, paint the bottom of the run with clear nail polish. Let dry and repeat. Do this while wearing them, and gently unstick from the skin. It works better when the hose or tights are stretched as they will be worn, and you don’t risk attaching the run side to the other side of the tights.

• “I somehow lost one of a pair of socks that had non-slip gripper dots on the bottoms of the feet. I gave the odd sock to my mom, and she uses it as a jar or bottle opener. The gripper dots help her get a hold of the lid to unscrew it.” -- R.J. in Ohio

• To freshen a lunchbox, dampen a paper towel with plain vinegar and stick it inside the lunchbox. Leave overnight.
