Seventy-five percent of Americans own pets, opening their homes to an estimated 77 million cats and 61 million dogs. Why do we love our pets so much? Maybe this is the reason. Nearly 94 percent of pet owners report that their animal pal makes them smile more than once a day. So with that in mind, here is Tidbits’ salute to pets. • The canine nose works one million times more efficiently than the human nose, according to scientists.• The eight heaviest breeds of dog are: St. Bernard, English Mastiff, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Tibetan Mastiff, Newfoundland, Neapolitan Mastiff and Anatolian Karabash.• A cat preening its back or the back of its ear is said to be a sign of rain. • Cats almost never “purr” at other cats. The sound is reserved for humans. • The oldest cat ever recorded was a tabby named “Puss” in Devon, England, who lived to be an amazing 36 years of age.• Quite a few pet birds can learn to talk and can say as many as 200 words and phrases.• Many scientists believe that birds are closely related to dinosaurs.

Millie was the most popular “First Dog” in history. • Before the enactment of the 1978 law that made it mandatory for dog owners in New York City to clean up after their pets, approximately 40 million pounds of dog excrement were deposited on the streets every year. • Who’s smarter, cats or dogs? Cats have better memories than dogs. Tests conducted by the University of Michigan concluded that while a dog’s memory lasts no more than 5 minutes, a cat’s can last as long as 16 hours, exceeding even that of monkeys and orangutans.• Cats have more than 100 vocal sounds, while dogs only have about ten. • Cats, not dogs, are the most common pets in America. After cats and dogs are Parakeets, coming in a distant third at 14 million.• Contrary to popular belief, dogs do not sweat by salivating. They sweat through the pads of their feet. • Dachshunds are the smallest breed of dog used for hunting. The arch is able to get so high because the cat’s spine contains nearly 60 vertebrae which fit loosely together. Humans have only 34 vertebrae. • A cat’s hearing rates as one of the top in the animal kingdom. Cats can hear sounds as high-pitched as 65 kHz; a human’s hearing stops at just 20 kHz.• A cat’s heart beats at 110 to 140 beats per minute, twice as fast as a human heart.• A cat’s tail held high means happiness. A twitching tail is a warning sign, and a tail tucked in close to the body is a sure sign of insecurity. • A cat’s tail plays a vital part in the cat’s balance and in the “righting reflex” that allows it to land on its feet after falling from a height. • Seventy percent of people sign their pet’s name on greeting cards and 58 percent include their pets in family and holiday portraits, according to a survey done by the American Animal Hospital Association. • Small dogs are rapidly gaining popularity, according to American Kennel Club registration statistics. Three toy breeds are among the top 10 in popularity on the most recent list: the Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua and Shih Tzu rank 6th, 9th and 10th, respectively. A decade ago, no toy breeds were in the top 10. • Some 39 percent of pet owners say they have more photos of their pet than of their spouse or significant other. • “Seizure Alert” dogs can alert their owners up to an hour before the onset of an epileptic seizure.

Cat’s Litter Box Looks Like Mud Bog

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My female cat “Sandy” will drink a quart of water very quickly. Then for the next couple of days, her litter box looks like sandbox after rain storm. It’s a big mess, and looks like a mud field. What’s wrong with her? -- Fred in Rochester, N.Y.

DEAR FRED: I can’t tell you what’s wrong from here, but I can tell you to take Sandy to the veterinarian as soon as possible and describe to him or her exactly what you told me. If Sandy has any other unusual behaviors or symptoms, such as seeming lethargic, irritated, hiding out for long periods and so on, tell the vet this as well.Frequent urination is a sign that a serious illness may be developing. It’s one of the symptoms of feline diabetes, for example -- although only the vet can make this diagnosis. Often, the illness can be managed, but only if your cat gets prompt medical attention. If caught early, Sandy might only need minimal changes in how she’s cared for -- a change in diet, some medication and more frequent checkups.If you’re worried about the cost of care, please mention this to the vet when you go in. Something can be worked out so that Sandy can get the help she needs. Many states and cities offer assistance to senior citizens with pets, so that pets can get annual checkups, needed shots and tags at little or no cost.Besides the vet’s office, the best places to find information about discounted pet care include senior community centers and the local Humane Society.

Ray Charles Robinson was born Sept. 23, 1930, in Albany, Ga. At age 5 he began to go blind, but that didn’t stop him. Music was in his soul, and by 1947, he was already recording music. The rest is musical history.

• Ray Charles Robinson dropped his last name to avoid confusion with boxer Sugar Ray Robinson and patterned himself in his early career after Nat “King” Cole. • Charles got his first taste of commercial success in 1953, when he arranged and played piano on bluesman Guitar Slim’s recording of “The Things That I Used to Do,” which sold more than a million copies.• What became known as the real Ray Charles sound emerged in 1954 on a record called “I Got A Woman.” The recording reached #1 on the R&B chart in 1955.• On June 26, 1959, Charles cut his first country cover when he recorded the song “I’m Movin’ On,” originally done by Hank Snow. Perhaps it was irony that this would be his last session for Atlantic Records, and move on he did. Charles, by 1959, had posted some 20 hits on the R&B charts.• Ray performed at President Ronald Reagan’s 2nd inauguration (1985) and President Bill Clinton’s 1st (1993).• Charles founded the Ray Charles Foundation for the hearing impaired.• Charles tested actor Jamie Foxx by asking him to play a line of Thelonious Monk Jazz before he acted in the movie, “Ray” (2004).• Ray preferred to be paid in single dollar bills.• Charles neither used a cane nor dog, but navigated by the sound of his hard-soled shoes instead.• Ray could ride a motorcycle, drive a car, and fly a plane even though he was blind. MAN & THE MOONOn April 12, 1961, Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin shocked the world when he became the first human to travel into space in Vostok 3KA-2 (Vostok 1). • After the space flight, Gagarin became an instant, worldwide celebrity, touring widely to promote the Soviet achievement. He proved quite adept at handling the publicity. • Gagarin received so much fan mail the Russian authorities gave him his own zip code, Moscow 705.• Like John Glenn, Gagarin was considered too valuable to his country to risk in another space flight and was grounded from future space missions. Gagarin eventually became deputy training director of Star City, the Russian equivalent of Cape Kennedy and Johnson Space Center combined. • On March 27, 1968, Gagarin died in a MiG-15 UTI Russian fighter plane on a routine training flight near Kirzhach, Russia. • Contrary to popular belief, the moon does have an atmosphere. It is very thin. If you took all of the molecules in one cubic centimeter of atmosphere from the moon and lined them up, they would fit inside the period of this sentence. • The U.S.S.R. captured the first photo of the moon taken from space in 1959. The image was of the dark side of the moon. • The first spacecraft to send back pictures of the far side of the moon was Luna 3 in October 1959. The photographs covered about 70 percent of the moon’s far side. MAN & THE MOON (continued):• In China, the dark shadows forming a face are known as “the toad in the moon,” not the “man in the moon.” The toad is considered one of the five poisons of yin. It is believed that eclipses occur when the “toad in the moon” tries to swallow the moon itself. • The temperature on the moon reaches 243° F (117 C) at midday on the lunar equator. At night, the temperature falls to -261° F (-163 C). • The first U.S. flag on the moon was deployed by Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin during their historic EVA on July 20, 1969 • The footprints left by the Apollo astronauts will not erode since there is no wind or water on the moon. The footprints should last at least 10 million years. • Astronaut Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon with his left foot.• The Apollo 13 Mission was planned as a lunar landing mission but was aborted en route to the moon after about 56 hours of flight due to loss of service module cryogenic oxygen and consequent loss of capability to generate electrical power, to provide oxygen and to produce water. It was later made into an award-winning movie starring Tom Hanks.• Opposites attract? Not on the moon. The moon has no global magnetic field. • Due to its size and composition, the moon is sometimes classified as a terrestrial “planet” along with Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. • The last man to fly in space alone was Apollo 17 command module pilot Ron Evans, who circled the moon alone while astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt went to the surface.

Fast Heartbeat Sometimes a Family Affair

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is SVT? What causes it? What is heart ablation? My grandmother, my mother and I all have had SVT episodes. I required heart ablation. -- J.P.ANSWER: “SVT” is short for “supraventricular tachycardia.” Tachycardia is a fast heartbeat. “Supraventricular” indicates that the fast beat arises in the upper heart chambers, the ones above (supra) the ventricles, which are the heart’s pumping chambers. Those upper chambers are the atria.SVT covers many different conditions. Since you spoke of “episodes,” I assume you had PSVT, paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia -- fast heart-beating that comes on suddenly, doesn’t last too long and stops abruptly.Causes for PSVT can involve the little electric generator that delivers a small jolt of electricity that initiates the heartbeat. Or it can come from an extra pathway that the electric impulse takes on its way to the lower heart chambers. Both conditions can be there from birth, and both can be a family affair, one controlled by genes. It sounds like yours is the genetic kind.Medicines often can keep supraventricular tachycardia controlled. Your treatment, ablation, is a permanent cure. Literally, “ablation” means “a taking away.” In the case of supraventricular tachycardia, tissue that initiates the fast heartbeat is destroyed. That’s done with a catheter -- a soft, thin tube advanced into the heart from a surface blood vessel. The catheter emits radio waves. When it reaches the place that gives rise to the fast beats, the radio waves are turned on, and that bit of tissue is erased, ablated. Ablation is successful in preventing resumption of fast-heartbeat attacks in a high percentage of cases. Is that true? -- S.T.ANSWER: That “someone” has confused a message about beta carotene, a substance found in carrots (and other foods). It’s a precursor of vitamin A.Smokers should not take beta carotene supplements. It raises their risk for getting lung cancer. You don’t have to worry about eating foods with beta carotene, including carrots.

• On Aug. 15, 1961, two days after sealing off free passage between East and West Berlin with barbed wire, East German authorities begin building a wall --the Berlin Wall -- to permanently close off access to the West. The city would remain divided until Nov. 9, 1989.

• On Aug. 10, 1993, a rare collision of three ships in Tampa Bay, Florida, results in a spill of 336,000 gallons of fuel oil. The incident marked the first use of a computerized trajectory model to track an oil spill using data on wind, weather and the movement of tides to determine the extent of a spill.

Healthy Key Lime PieFat-free sweetened condensed milk and fat-free yogurt trim the fat and calories from this luscious lime pie.

• 1 1/4 cups low-fat graham cracker crumbs• 4 tablespoons trans-fat free vegetable oil spread (60 percent to 70 percent oil)• 1 tablespoon sugar• 1/8 teaspoon salt• 1/3 cup cold water• 1 envelope unflavored gelatin• 22 Key limes or 4 to 5 regular limes• 1 can (14-ounce) fat-free sweetened condensed milk• 1 1/2 cup plain fat-free yogurt

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. In 9-inch glass pie plate, mix crumbs with spread, sugar and salt to moisten. With hand, press onto bottom and up sides of pie plate. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, until golden. Cool until ready to fill.�. Meanwhile, to 1-quart saucepan, add water; sprinkle with gelatin. Let stand 2 minutes to soften. Cook on low to dissolve, stirring. Remove from heat.3. From limes, grate 2 teaspoons peel and squeeze 1/2 cup juice; if using Key limes, do not use grated peel -- it will make filling taste bitter. In bowl, whisk lime peel and juice, milk and yogurt. Whisk in gelatin mixture.4. Spoon filling into crust. Cover; refrigerate at least 2 hours to set. Serves 10.

• Each serving: About 235 calories, 5g total fat (1g saturated), 6mg cholesterol, 185mg sodium, 42g total carbohydrate, 7g protein.

HOLLYWOOD -- Thankfully, the awards season is on the wane. Everyone is getting more than a bit sated over the “same old, same old.” However, with the summer season almost upon us, production is slowing down and news is harder to find (except, of course, when Paris, Lindsay and Britney are around). One piece of news about the awards: It looks like Oscar may be in February come next go-round. Don’t ask me why. Perhaps the powers that be feel they should be delivered earlier. Much news lately about the late Orson Welles. I had the pleasure, or I might say the displeasure, of working with him on some of his radio presentations. He wasn’t easy. And oh boy! When Orson got hungry, work stopped and the great Welles ate. We sat and watched. And oh how he did love to eat. Aside to Peter D. of Palm Beach, Fla.: Yes, that Keir Dullea now starring in the “Castle” series is the same Keir Dullea who played Lana Turner’s son in “Madame X.” And yes, I was the policewoman in that same pic. So, I came to know Keir well, and a nicer, more polite young man could not be found. I’m sure he has remained that way today. You also might remember Keir from “2001: A Space Odyssey” and the cult film “Bunny Lake Is Missing.” I wish him all the best! Filmtown is mourning the passing of Fess Parker. He is being called “King of the Wild Frontier, a Television Icon and a Gentleman.” And that he was. I had the pleasure of knowing him when he came to New Orleans and I had a TV show there. He was a guest. So polite. So nice. But I might

add with all that leather in all that hot weather, sometimes when he made an appearance it didn’t always smell like roses.

Showbiz also mourning the death of June Haver, younger sister of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. June had a nice career, but never as big as her sister’s. I met them both when I was just starting out, and young enough to be very impressed knowing STRIPPERS! Gypsy even showed me how to do it. She would say, “It’s all in the way you take it off.” Then she would take it off! Aside to Martina F. of Denver: You ask, “Who would I say is the bigger star, Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts?” That isn’t easy. They both are excellent actresses, they both are beautiful women, they both are big at the box office. So I will let my readers decide whom they like best -- Julia or Sandra. “Duke it out, girls!” A younger generation will get a taste of “Private Benjamin,” and a new star, Anna Faris, will shine. The film was a big hit years ago when Goldie Hawn starred in the title role, and now viewers await

the new version -- and the new private. More about this when we get it.

*** BITS ‘N’ PIECES: Kaley Cuoco. Remember the name. You’ll be seeing a lot of her soon. On the tube and on the big screen. ... Russell Crowe got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with all the brouhaha that could only come from Crowe. Interesting sidelight on this man: Every time you see him, he looks different.
