This Tidbits looks at the noble, fierce little dogs bred to hunt badgers. Dachshund means “badger hound” in German. Affectionately called “wiener dogs,” they can be very comical.

• Dachshunds are good watchdogs because of their loud fierce barks, which, of course, can be annoying at times! They are loved by children because of their size and distinctive cuteness. Even though dachshunds are not known for their ease of training, they are very popular. Some say they are low-slung hounds with big attitudes! • Illustrations from as far back as the 1500s depict dogs similar to dachshunds. Some historians believe that dachshunds have been around since ancient Egypt. However, the most widely held story of the funny little “hot dogs” origins is that they were developed in Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were bred to be dogs with excellent digging skills and the ability to chase rabbits, foxes and even more formidable animals such as boars and badgers. turn the page for more!

• Dachshunds are exceedingly loyal, protecting their owners in all circumstances, even when confronted by dogs five or more times their size. They are known to be tough, sweet, cuddly, affectionate, courageous, curious and lively and are always ready to make you laugh.

• Traditionally, dachshunds have been seen as a symbol of Germany. During World War I, they were not wanted by the people of England or the United States. Americans began calling the dogs “liberty pups,” and political cartoonists drew dachshunds to ridicule the Germans. Some dislike for the dogs lingered during World War II but was not as widespread.

Their popularity from 1930 to 1940, before and during World War II, actually advanced from 28th to sixth. After the big wars, love for dachshunds became the predominant emotion.

• Dachshunds have been recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) since 1885. Today, they consistently rank in the top 10 breeds for popularity.

• While the most popular dachshunds are black and tan or solid tan (red) in color, many different colors for the breed exist. The reds can vary from strawberry blonde to deep auburn; there are chocolate, crème and gray coats as well. Some interesting colorations are brindles, dapple and piebalds. There are three varieties of dachshund that

can be any of the colors: wire-haired, smooth and long-haired.

• The following story has never been confirmed, but it makes for great reading about hot dogs: In 1852, the butcher’s guild in Frankfurt, Germany, developed a smoked, spicy sausage in a casing that resembled the low-riding German Dachshund. It was dubbed the “little-dog” or “dachshund sausage.” Legend says that cartoonist Tad Dorgan was inspired by vendors at a 1901 polo match in New York who offered “red-hot dachshund sausages” to fans in the grandstands. Dorgan drew a smiling dachshund in a long bun for one of his cartoons. He couldn’t spell dachshund, so his caption read “hot dog!”

• There are many famous people who have loved their pet dachshunds. The first (and maybe only) dachshunds to live in the White House belonged to U.S. President Grover Cleveland. Actually, according the New York Times, September 26, 1893 edition, the dogs were a gift for Mrs. Cleveland from the Unites States Consul

in Bremen, Germany. They were sent on a 4,000-mile (6,437-km) journey to live at the nation’s capital. Surely that was an entertaining trip for the crew.

• Pablo Picasso painted many canvases and even a lunch plate with the likeness of his dachshund, Lump. Picasso actually painted a copy of a famous painting by Velazquez, called “Las Meninas.” In Picasso’s version, a large mastiff is replaced by a much smaller dog, Lump! (Lump is pronounced loomp in German and means “rascal,” appropriate for a dachshund!)

who became a hero when he awakened Wayne’s wife during a house fire in 1958 with his tenacious bark.

• The first dachshund in England was owned by Queen Victoria in 1839. Her husband, German Prince Albert, gave her the dog as a gift and soon brought more of the puppies to the country. The breed quickly gained popularity and was recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1877. • Gergweis, Germany, the “Dachshund Capital of the World,” once had so many dachshunds that they outnumbered people two to one. They were used as a tourist attraction!

• All three “Toy Story” movies have had a “Slinky” dachshund in them who has been a big hit with kids and adults alike. The second movie actually had a real dachshund puppy in it, Buster, who helped save a toy taken to a yard sale.

• There are some exciting “wiener dog” events around the world that draw crowds for fun and laughter as the popular little dogs entertain. Even when dachshunds don’t intend to entertain, they are entertaining! • The 20th Annual Weiner Walk and Dachshund Picnic was held at Winskill Park in Tsawwassen, British Columbia in August. Some years have seen as many as 300 dog lovers and their canines. The event is put on by the Western Dachshund Club and includes walks around the park, a costume parade and contest, contests for best trick, longest dog, oldest dog and more. As could be expected, there are drinks and snacks for sale, including hot dogs!

• Dachshund Races are fun events that can be found in numerous places. Dachshund lovers as well as those who just want to enjoy the comedy of the sight gather to watch

the large races that are part of the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals in Buda, Texas; Los Alamitos, California; Findlay, Ohio; and San Diego, California. If you missed these big events this year, don’t worry, the finals are held prior to the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade in December before the Holiday Bowl. The finalists get to be in the parade on the Wienerschnitzel float. (Wienerschnitzel is a chain of hot dog restaurants that celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011.) • The Dachshund Club of America opposes “wiener racing,” because many of the events precede greyhound races, which are abusive to greyhounds. Also, racing can lead to back injuries in dachshunds.

FaMOUs laNDMaRKs OF THe WORlD:

THE EVERGLADESUsually when thinking of “wilderness,” we have visions of thick green forests with tall trees, but Everglades National Park is a bit different. It is the largest wilderness area in the United States east of the Mississippi River.

• Everglades National Park, established in 1947, protects over 1.5 million acres (607,028 ha) of land and water. It is the third largest national park in the continental United States, behind Yellowstone (2nd) and Death Valley (1st).

• Marjorie Stoneman Douglas came up with the phrase “river of grass” in a publication that she authored in 1947. “The Everglades: River of Grass” was a guide that raised awareness of the Everglades and helped the public to recognize that the area was not just the “proverbial swamp” that many considered it to be. It technically is a river, flowing southwest through Florida at the slow pace of about a quarter mile per day. She was a leader in promoting the Everglades to national park status. Twenty-two years later, she helped to found the “Friends of the Everglades” conservation organization.

• The elevation in the Everglades ranges from sea level to 20 feet (6 m) above sea level. The top spot is on a shell mound made by Native Americans located on the Gulf Coast side of the park.

• The original size of the Everglades was much larger than the area protected by the National Park Service today. Years ago it spanned form Lake Okeechobee in central Florida all the way south to Florida Bay. Only 25 percent of the historic Everglades is in the park.

• There are 15 endangered species within the park boundaries. Sea turtles, crocodiles and West Indian Manatees are among the protected animals.

• Deeply interwoven in the park are towering palm trees, endless marshes, tropical fauna, dense mangrove stands, alligator holes and much more. All of these are important in maintaining the integrity of the Everglades.

• The mangrove forests cover an estimated 469,000 acres (189798 ha) in the state of Florida, with much of that within the protected Everglades. Mangrove roots and branches are essential for the marine animals of the region. The roots provide protection for fish, crustaceans and shellfish to raise their young. The branches are nesting areas for many beautiful coastal birds such as roseate spoonbills and brown pelicans. • Everglades National Park is a wonderful place to explore,

but a knowledgeable guide is a great person to have along for unfamiliar tourists. As reported in recent years, there are not only animals that have been there for centuries that can be dangerous, but there are also some invasive species that are wreaking havoc on the area.

• For years there have been stories of people spotting Burmese pythons in the Everglades. The largest snake species on earth, these giant pythons are not only living in the park, they’re also breeding and spreading to the surrounding environs of south Florida. Since 2002, more than 1,800 pythons have been removed from the park and surrounding areas.

• For the health of the Everglades and all of south Florida, it is imperative that invasive species like pythons, which have been accidentally or intentionally released into the wild, be controlled.

BADGERSKnown for being incredibly strong for their size and the world’s fastest diggers, badgers are small but fierce animals.

• Badgers are nocturnal omnivores, meaning they are active mainly at night and eat both plants and animals. They are known to eat insects, grubs, earthworms, birds, mice, squirrels, chipmunks, reptiles, amphibians, porcupines, honey, roots, snakes and fruit. After badgers eat rotten fruit, they appear to be intoxicated.

• There are seven species of badgers that are found on four continents: North America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Most species of badger weigh 17-26 pounds (8-12 kg).

• Badgers have a shovel-shaped head, sharp, strong claws and low-slung bodies. They have short legs, short necks and short bushy tails. Most species are black or gray and have white stripes down their faces and sides.

• The burrows that badgers dig for their living quarters, called setts, are usually in sandy, porous soil. They dig extensive tunnel systems to their setts. An interesting fact about badgers is that they really get into their digging — with all four feet! They can dig faster than very fit humans with a shovel.

• Badgers have poor eyesight but excellent senses of hearing and smell. In fact, it is believed that the badger’s

sense of smell is 700-800 times better than humans! They smell many things that humans do not and can even recognize each other by smell.

• The name “badger” is probably derived from the French word bêcheur, which means digger, or maybe from the word badge as a reference to the white mark badgers have on their foreheads. In the English language the

word “badger” has a meaning as a verb as well as a noun. To “badger” someone is “to pester or worry them or to persecute them relentlessly.”

• Badgers can mate at any time of year. An interesting and unusual mating fact is that they have delayed implantation. The female can choose when she wants her baby badger

to start developing! This allows the mother to choose a time when she feels her offspring has the best chance for survival.

• Ferret badgers are the smallest species of badger, and like ferrets, they are long and short. Ferret badgers live in Southeast Asia and are known for occasionally sleeping in trees. These little creatures usually weigh between 2 and

6.5 pounds (1-3 kg).

• One food that all badgers love is earthworms. They can eat more than 200 in a day. Badgers can get all of the water they need from eating earthworms since the worms are mostly made of water.

• Badgers, even though fairly small, can run at almost 20 miles per hour (32 km/hr). This helps them escape dangerous situations. They do not usually run though.

• Adult badgers have few natural enemies, as they are fierce enough to protect themselves. They have even been known to fight bears and wolves.

• The state of Wisconsin is known as the “badger state.” The nickname originally referred to lead miners at the Galena lead

mines in Illinois back in the 1830s. These mines were close to the Wisconsin and Iowa borders. The Wisconsin miners would live in temporary caves cut into the hillsides. Their caves were referred to as badger dens, and thus, they were nicknamed badgers. The badger was adopted as the state animal in 1957.

Bank can close your checking account

If you find yourself frequently overdrawn at the bank, with checks being returned for Not Sufficient Funds, you could find yourself without a checking account. And you might not be able to get an account another bank -- at least not easily.

According to FDIC Consumer News, banks closed 30 million consumer checking accounts in the past five years.

If you lose your checking account, you’ll only have a few options when it comes to paying your bills. You can deliver the payment in cash if it’s local, or you can buy money orders to mail. You also won’t have access to an ATM machine for cash withdrawals.

The inconvenience of not having a checking account goes

even further -- to your credit record. If your bank reported your bounced checks to a credit-reporting agency (probably ChexSystems, as it handles the reporting for bad checks), it could stay on your record for five years. ChexSystems is a debt collector and reporting agency governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act laws.

Per Consumer News, there are ways to try to fix the problem so you can have a checking account.

Ask your bank to have the report removed from your ChexSystems information. They might, if you’ve been a customer for a long time and the overdrafts were mistakes that you cleared up immediately. Your bank is under no obligation to remove any accurate information, but it does have to report if the account is paid.

Fish Oil Does Not Benefit Heart

Fish oil does not lower the risk of cardiovascular disease or death, according to a new review in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers analyzed 20 studies including 68,680 patients who used omega-3 fatty acids for an average of two years and determined that fish oil had no effect on heart-related death, heart attack, or stroke. These findings follow another recent review showing fish oil did not prevent the recurrence of heart problems among patients.

Meat Bad for you and environment

People who consumed the least amount of red and processed meat products had reduced risk for heart disease, diabetes, and colorectal cancer, compared with those who consumed the most, according to a new study in the British Medical Journal Open. Men and women who consumed the least amount of red and processed meat products had a 9.7 and 6.4 percent reduced risk for heart disease, 12.0 and 7.5 percent reduced risk for diabetes, and a 12.2 and 7.7 percent reduced risk for colorectal cancer, respectively. Researchers used British National Diet and Nutrition

Survey data to estimate dietary intake of 1,724 adults in the United Kingdom.

Authors also noted that each participant who consumed the least amount of red and processed meat in this study used 0.45 tons less of carbon dioxide emission equivalents per year, compared with those who consumed the most. Red and processed meat products are a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

statins contribute to Fatigue and loss of energy

The Archives of Internal Medicine reports that cholesterol-lowering drugs contribute to fatigue and loss of energy. A group of 1,016 people were assigned to take either cholesterol-lowering statin drugs or placebo. The statin users reported loss of energy and fatigue on exertion significantly more often than did those in the placebo group.

While statins have been viewed as generally safe, their list of potential side effects continues to grow: muscle and liver toxicity, increased risk of diabetes, sporadic reports of memory problems, and now, fatigue.

Spinal Stenosis Causes Back Pain

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 84 years old, and I have spinal stenosis, which is causing me pain. I would like to know more about it. Will you furnish more information? -- T.P.

ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is a common back problem of older people. It’s said that 20 percent of those older than 60 have it. The spinal cord is an offshoot of the brain, and it travels from the brain to the lower back. It’s about the width of your little finger and is extremely delicate. That’s why nature encased it in backbones -- vertebrae. Running through the backbones is a tunnel, the spinal canal that serves to protect the cord.

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the tunnel. It happens mostly in the neck and lower-back regions. Thickened ligaments surrounding the spinal cord or arthritic changes of the backbones impinge on the spinal cord or the nerves that spring from it.

When the process occurs in the back, pain is felt there and often in the buttocks or thighs. The pain worsens if a person stands for too long. People can ease the pain by bending forward at the waist or by sitting down. Bending opens the tunnel to give the spinal cord some breathing room. The amount of bend that works is the amount of bend a person assumes when pushing a shopping cart.

Have you tried Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain? It’s safe when used as directed on the label. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) also are helpful. They can cause stomach upset and stomach bleeding, so follow directions given for their use. Hot packs or cold packs might work. Try both, and see if either gets the job done.

At night, lying on your side in bed with a pillow between your knees lessens pain. A program of physical therapy might help you turn the corner. Ask your doctor for a referral. And finally, the opinion of a back surgeon will let you know if any surgical technique can bring you relief.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I just received my grandmother’s death certificate. It says: “Cause of death: uterine hemorrhage. Contributing cause: surgical shock.” She died in 1931 at the young age of 33. What does all this mean? -- J.F.

ANSWER: Hemorrhage is massive bleeding. She bled from her uterus either during an operation or from a tumor, a twisted fibroid or an infection. Surgical shock isn’t a term used these days. Shock means that the bleeding was so great, her blood pressure dropped. Not enough blood could circulate to her organs, including her brain and heart. In those days, such a catastrophe almost always resulted in death.

I’m guessing at the meaning of surgical shock. I take it to mean that the bleeding occurred during surgery.

Cabbage and Leeks from Alicia Silverstone

1/2 head cabbage (green, red, Napa, your choice), chopped into big bite-size pieces 1/2 leek, chopped into big bite-size pieces 2 - 3 tablespoons roasted sunflower or pumpkin seeds 2 tablespoons umeboshi plum vinegar 2 tablespoons flaxseed oil

Steam the cabbage pieces and leeks separately. They will have different steaming times. Steam until they are soft but still crunchy, a few minutes or less. Combine seeds, umeboshi plum vinegar, and flax seed oil in a bowl. Mix well. Pour sauce over steamed cabbage and leeks.

To roast seeds: Wash seeds and roast in a pan

over medium heat until they break easily between thumb and forefinger. They will have a nutty scent. Cover toasted seeds with a few drops of shoyu sauce when finished roasting. If seeds are “popping” out of the pan, the heat is too high.

HOLLYWOOD -- The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which awards the Oscars each year, sent shock waves throughout Hollywood when it switched from announcing the Oscar nominations on Jan. 15 (last year) to Jan. 10 (this year). For years, the Golden Globes have capitalized on giving out their awards earlier, potentially influencing Academy voters. This year, the Golden Globes will air three days after the Oscar nominations, on Jan. 13. All the other award shows that beat out the Oscars are changing their dates to be relevant, if they can.

There’s no telling how the new date will impact big films such as “The Hobbit” (Dec. 14) and “Les Miz” (Dec. 25) in impressing voters. Why did the Academy switch the dates? In a word: purity! It’s been trying for years to keep studios and producers from waging massive ad campaigns to influence voters.

Now we go from the biggest event in films to the littlest

event in television -- Honey Boo Boo. While many viewers thought Honey and her family were just a bunch of country bumpkins, they were quietly pulling in $4,000 an episode. Now that they’re an unqualified hit ... with higher ratings than the Republican Convention, they’re demanding a pay raise to $10,000 an episode to sign for season 2.

Kristen Wiig, who left “Saturday Night Live” on the heels of her “ B r i d e s m a i d s ” success, has taken The Toronto Film Festival by storm with her new movie “Imogene,” co-starring with Annette Bening,

“Glee’s” Darren Criss and Matt Dillon. Wiig plays a screenwriter who fakes a suicide to get her boyfriend back, but ends up with her gambling-addicted mother

instead. The film has been picked up by Lionsgate for distribution.

Last year’s best picture winner, “The Artist,” was a black-and-white film that enabled a French filmmaker to bridge the language gap, effortlessly. You’d have thought there would’ve been a flood of silent B&W films -- but nothing until now! Spanish writer-director Pablo Berger screened his new B&W silent film, “Blancanieves,” at The Toronto Film Festival. Already this year we’ve had “Mirror, Mirror” and “Snow White and The Huntsman,” and now there’s Berger’s re-imagining of the famous Grimm fairy tale.

The film, set in Spain, centers around a bullfighter’s daughter, seven bullfighting dwarves and her wicked stepmother, who is more Norma Desmond from “Sunset Boulevard” than a witch, and ends more like “Sleeping Beauty” than “Snow White.” Let’s face it, any film with seven bullfighting dwarfs and a Norma Desmond-ish villainess has got to be as much fun as 30 clowns popping out of a Volkswagen!

Painting TipsQ: I’m painting my

apartment next week, the first time I’ve ever done this. Do you have any painting tips? -- Lana, Columbus, Ga.

A: Tons of tips, but limited space to list them

are daunted by the amount of paint a n d

to choose from, conflicting instructions

from various sources, and sometimes a lack of helpful information from home-improvement store paint sections. Others feel it’s simple enough to just buy a bunch of paint and brushes and just go for it. The reality falls somewhere in between.

Preparation is the most important rule to follow, however. You’ll want to prepare the walls (and presumably trim) in the apartment for painting. You’ll need to figure out not just what color paint to use, but how much of it to buy, and if the colors even work the way you think they will. Here are a few tips to get you started:

--Buy sample sizes of paint colors you’re interested in, and paint a stripe of each in an inconspicuous section of the wall. Paint looks different when wet and when dry.

--How much paint should you buy? A gallon of latex paint covers 350 square feet. Measure the length of each wall and add the figures together. Measure the height of the room from floor to ceiling. Multiply the first number by the height of the room and you’ll have your square footage.

--Wash all surfaces to be painted with a damp sponge soaked in a soap and water solution and then squeezed to remove most of the water. Let the surfaces dry for about a half-day, longer if it’s rainy or humid.

--Remove protruding nails and patch nail holes and small (less than 1/2 inch) dents and holes with spackling compound. Once it’s dry, sand the compound lightly and wipe with a damp sponge to remove dust.

--Mask off areas you don’t want to paint using blue painter’s tape, which comes off more easily than masking tape.

--Covering a dark wall with a lighter paint? Prime the wall first with a primer that is close to or matches the color of the new paint.

--Ditto for covering one type of paint, such as an oil-based paint, with a different type, such as latex paint. A primer coat will keep your new paint from bubbling, cracking or peeling.

--Make sure the area being painted is well ventilated; additionally, wear a filter mask (not a dust mask) to reduce inhalation of paint fumes.

purchase it, saving a lot of time, but you still

should stir the paint for a few seconds immediately

before beginning to paint with it.

Acupuncture Helps Perk Up Old Dog

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response to your column on alternative treatments for pets. A vet I used to work for studied acupuncture for pets. She had an old dog with arthritis, and he was really grumpy because he was in so much pain. The vet did acupuncture on him, and within a few weeks he was running around and playing with the puppies. Total change in that dog. Dogs can’t fake it! Made

DEAR MRS. J: Thank you for the anecdote! While studies about the effectiveness of acupuncture and other alternative treatments -- such as homeopathy, reiki, massage and aromatherapy -- are still being done, many pet owners swear by these treatments and say that their pets’ lives have been profoundly changed for the better.

Do they really work? I don’t know. However, speaking with a medical doctor a few years ago about alternative treatments, she said that since most alternative treatments have few-to-no side effects, and her (human) patients felt better after having them, she felt that they were a positive benefit that could boost the effectiveness of more conventional Western medicine.

This idea could hold true for treatment of pets, as well. I think it’s important to consult your pet’s veterinarian for any illness or injury -- physical or emotional -- and make sure your pet gets conventional treatment. But alternative therapies can provide additional benefits.

Freeze-Ahead Fresh Apple Pie Filling

It’s apple season! That means it’s time to make your way to a local apple orchard and harvest your own. Many orchards are jam-packed with additional things to do in the crisp fall air, such as hay rides, corn mazes and walking trails. You’ll be tempted with a never-ending array of treats, from apple cider to doughnuts and caramel apples. But no trip is complete without the experience of picking apples fresh off the tree with your kids and bringing them home to enjoy for snacking, applesauce-making and our family favorite, apple-pie baking.

One year, when we came home with an extra basketful, I thought about how great it would be to preserve that fresh taste of our favorite local apples and enjoy them in a warm apple pie come wintertime.

That’s when a friend reminded me of her novel idea of freezing fresh apple pie filling in the shape of a pie pan. A

few months later, when chilly, snowy days were upon us and the family longed for the taste of fall, the frozen filling was placed in a pie shell and baked.

While you peel, core and slice apples for a pie or crisp this week, prepare some extras and freeze them. You’ll be glad you did.

Here’s how to make ahead and freeze apple filling for a two-crust pie:

1. Set a 22-inch sheet of wide aluminum foil over the pie

pan you will use for baking. Mold it in the pan at the center point of the foil. Set a 22-inch long piece of plastic wrap over the foil.

2. Peel, core and thinly slice 6 cups tart apples, and place them in a bowl. Toss with 2 tablespoons lemon juice. Stir in a mixture of 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

3. Pour apple mixture onto the plastic wrap in pie pan. Press firmly and form a rounded top. Bring edges of plastic wrap together to seal. Repeat with foil. Freeze overnight.

4. Remove pie plate and set frozen pie-shaped apple filling “package” in a plastic freezer bag. Freeze up to four months.

5. To bake apple pie, preheat oven to 375 F. Set unwrapped frozen apple filling in a 9-inch pastry-lined pan. Do not let it thaw. Dot with 1 tablespoon unsalted butter. Place top crust over filling. Cut slits to vent, then seal and flute. Set on a foil-lined baking sheet. Allow 20-30 extra minutes of baking time, or until filling is bubbling through the slits.

Tip: Cover loosely with foil if crust gets too brown before the filling bubbles.

A: Lifetime has indeed ordered 13 more episodes of the hit military drama for a 2013 seventh season. However, not all the details of who will be returning have been worked out. Catherine Bell appears to be a yes, while Dana Delany is most likely a no. Kelli Wilson, who plays Jackie Clark, seems a likely candidate to slip into a more prominent role. And don’t count out newcomer Kellie Martin, who plays Capt. Nicole Galassini. She told me recently that she’d be up for another tour of duty with “Wives.”

“I was honored to play this woman,” Kellie said. “I thought

she was so brave and so smart, yet in her personal life she had to hide, and it was really fun to play someone who comes out. I feel like Capt. Galassin is the girl next door. Everybody knows someone like her. I’m just very proud of “Army Wives” and Lifetime for following through with the storyline that they did.

Leanne Gitlin is fairly content with her mundane life in tiny Pinecob, W.Va., working at an unexciting government job, looking after of her mother and brother, and engineering ways to run into her longtime crush around town. At least she has an out-of-the-ordinary hobby to keep her busy: running the national fan club for heartthrob actor Joshua Reed. Still, after seven years cranking out newsletters for the rising star’s ever-growing following, her heart isn’t really in it anymore.

One day, she gets some exciting news: Joshua is finally coming to her neck of the woods. But little did Leanne expect that when she finally met Joshua Reed, he would be such a colossal jerk. And she never could have predicted that, a stolen limousine and one massive DUI later, he’d be living under house arrest in her very own house for the next 90 days.

What seems like a fan’s dream come true is a nightmare for Leanne, stuck night and day with the hostile Joshua’s arrogance, entitlement and mocking attitude toward everything and everyone around him. But as the summer wears on, secrets begin to emerge not only from the closed-up Joshua, but also from friends and family Leanne has known her entire life.

Lives seem to be transforming all around her in Pinecob, and Leanne is forced has to question what she really wants out of hers, and whether she’s really satisfied with the one she’s been leading. After all, if a creep like Joshua Reed can change, perhaps Leanne Gitlin can too.

Light and breezy but with a heartfelt emotional core, “The Mean Season,” new to ebook format, is a delightful read. The “country” characters and setting feel realistic, not corny, and its silly-sweet plot doesn’t necessarily go in the way you’d expect, and is even more pleasing for that.


DANIA BEACH COMMUNITY GARDEN

Nearly 80 gardeners, naturalists, and community members broke ground this past Saturday morning to install the Dania Beach Community Garden.

On the corner of NW 1st St. and NW 13th Ave, volunteers filled bags for planting. The original goal of 400 was exceeded when planters ended up with 620 filled bags at the end of the event.

This week, irrigation lines will be installed. Neighbors, community members and the general public are encouraged to visit the garden the next two weeks to volunteer to help finish installing the garden – Oct. 6 and 13 – to finish filling bags and for planting. A sign-up sheet will be available each Saturday for people who would like a bag to grow their own selection of vegetables.
