A message to all our valued advertisers: One of our advertisers has contacted us

to say that a call was received from someone who said he got her details from The

Voice. This caller was very persistent in trying to sell advertising space in a

magazine which, he said, goes out free to local households. We would urge all of

you to please check carefully if you are contacted by cold callers trying to sell you

space, and please see the link below for further information.

    Finding Hope

We've all been basking in some lovely bright sunshine recently. With lighter nights

and the hope of summer to look forward to it's a lovely time of year. But we should

all spare a thought for those for whom life is difficult at the moment, for all who are

walking in the darkness of pain.

Tragedy strikes all of us at some time or other and when tragedy strikes, in its many

different ways, whether it's the loss of a loved one or something else that hurts us

deeply; the blow can rob us of our sense of hope. Of all the possible tragedies to

strike, the death of a child has to be the most heartbreaking, devastating and family-

shattering. A more savage wound I cannot imagine.

Loss of hope is absolutely crippling. So how do we regain hope? I don't mean joy or

even normality, but hope that someday life might again make sense again and be

lived without daily unbearable pain. How can we be optimistic when we know the

worst case scenario not only can happen but already has?

We have to deal with the grief and the loss and this can take a long time. Loss is a

powerful event that can't be swept under the rug. It's important to be able to talk, to

sort out our feelings: a friend, someone from the church (including the Vicar) or

maybe a support group, counsellor, therapist, perhaps even the doctor.

For those of us who find ourselves close to someone suffering we all have much to

offer. It's very important that we share our love and our support.

Eventually, we do find our way back - whatever happened to us we realize it no

longer holds us prisoner. But I don't think we ever really get over a crisis or move

on. Instead, we grow. We take all we've learned and continue growing. Trusting in

the goodness of life is part of that. And for those of us who have faith and put our

trust in the God of love, or who grow to discover and deepen our faith in Him through

all our struggles and pain there is so much more.

As we come to the knowledge that this life is not all there is and that there is a

presence in our own lives, one who will hold us close, lift us high, strengthen and

uphold us through thick and thin; we find in Him a sense of peace that could not

    have been dreamed of before.

I know how hard it is, but I also know it's possible. I've seen it happen. It happened

    to me.

In Him, our God of love and compassion, therein lies hope.

    Much love

    Revd Jane

    Magazine Bundles

    Distributors Needed

We have a small team of

    people who collect magazines

    from Bridge House in Gayton,

put them into bags and deliver

    them to our distributors.

We are looking for someone to

do this in Ashwicken. You will

only have to drop off about six

    bundles.

    Please ring Sarah Renwick on

    01553 636275 for more

    information, thank you.

    Leziate WI meeting

There were 5 apologies for the May

    meeting, mainly due to holiday

    commitments. Our WI advisor, Meg

Dorling, took us through the national

resolution for the AGM in Leeds. Our

    local representative, Pat Watts, also

attended our meeting and we voted for

it, ie. personal organ donations. Meg

explained that 3 people die every day

    needing an organ transplant. Nine

organs can be used from your body if

suitable. If anyone decides to donate,

and therefore carries a card indicating

this, family members have to be told, so

your wishes can happen and help others

in need. Pat Watts stated that a donor

has to have died in hospital. Meg was

    thanked by Eileen Baxter. Unfortunately,

member Jan Eason was away on

holiday so was unable to give her talk a

European vacation by train, which will

be given at a later date. The competition

of a holiday souvenir was won by Myrtle

Roberts, 2nd Georgy Morris and 3rd

    Sylvia Webber. Birthday ladies were

    Mary Besmar and Margareta Whiskin.

    Raffle winner was Sylvia Webber.

At our June meeting we were very lucky

as Michael Aldiss, who is a Town Guide,

showed slides and talked about historic

King's Lynn. It was so interesting to see

old photos of the town hall of when it

was first built in 1422, and to see

portraits of famous people connected to

the town, eg. Sir Robert Walpole,

    Captain Vancouver, Fanny Burney,

Charles I, Charles Burney, King John

    and others. St Margaret's Church

featured with lots of olden day

    photographs of Clifton House and

    Tuesday Market packed with stalls.

    Michael was thanked by Margareta

Whiskin. The competition of a local

recipe was won by Margareta Whiskin,

2nd Betty Alpe and 3rd Ali South.

    Heather Box won the raffle.

July and August are to be outings.

September 16th is harvest tea in the

    village hall.

    News

On Wednesday 11th June lots of

children from our school took part in the

    GIANT WALKING BUS

    national initiative organised by Brake

Road Safety Charity. Our children have

been learning about road safety and

    they designed posters and made

placards to take on their usual Walk to

School route. The event helped raise

awareness about the dangers of traffic

and cars driving too fast. It also

    encouraged children to think about

walking whenever possible to help the

    environment.

    East Walton's Harvest Festival

    date is now Wednesday 17th

    September, not 24th as

    previously advertised

    What's On in East Walton

One of the suggestions to raise money

at the Village Meeting was a Village

Lottery. To participate we would have

to pay 5 per month via standing order

into a lottery account and a monthly

draw will take place in a public place,

probably at the end of Church service

    for a 25 prize.

To develop this further, a Tea and Chat

has been arranged at the Church for

    16th July 6.30 7.30. We do hope

    many will come.

Band on the Lawn at Abbey Farm

Saturday 2nd August 7pm. Hog roast.

Please come along to this illustrated talk

    by Chris Mills, entitled:

    Birding in Extremadura, Spain

Chris Mills runs the bird-tour company,

Norfolk Birding, and is based locally at

Hunstanton. Chris has been birding and

    photographing wildlife for 30 years.

Birding has taken him to many wonderful

places, both at home and abroad. One

of his regular and favourite destinations

    is Extremadura in Spain.

Chris will entertain us with his

photography of the birds of this beautiful,

    unspoilt area of Spain.

    Visitors most welcome.

    GAYTON NEWS

    Gayton Evergreens

At our meeting in May the speakers

were from the East Coast Truckers'

charity, set up by heavy goods hauliers

to give disadvantaged children a fun day

    out to Pleasurewood Hills.

We were shown a film all about their

work, from the gleaming trucks taking

two days to prepare, the excited children

and their carers arriving, it was then time

to set off from the Norwich cattle market,

in the eighty trucker long convoy, now in

    its 29th year.

Each year more hauliers apply to take

    part in this spectacular occasion,

however the rules and regulations that

surround this day are vast, so a limit of

    eighty is the rule.

After a very interesting program a total of

169.00 was raised by the Evergreens

    for this very worthwhile cause.

    Everyone then enjoyed afternoon tea

and homemade cake, the football tote

was played and the raffle drawn, before

a very pleasant afternoon drew to an

    end.

July 16th A members only meeting in

the Jubilee Hall at 2.30pm, this year's

    lovely Strawberry Tea only 3.00.

show if you would like to go; booking

Saturday September 20th 10-30 am In

the Gayton Jubilee Village Hall The

    Evergreens are holding a fundraising

Coffee Morning for Tapping House, stalls

    to include Craft, Books/Puzzles, Cakes,

    Raffle and Tombola.

Our June 18th meeting will take place as

    this article is being sent for publishing;

we are off to Wroxham Barns for the

    afternoon, hope the sun shines!

Wishing you all a lovely summer from

    Gayton Parish Council News

    Meeting held 9th June 2014

Development of Old Mill Site and

    West of White Lodge

    The Council considered two planning

applications an outline application for a

large development of 33 homes on the

Old Mill Site and an application to

construct a new dwelling on land west of

    White Lodge. Whilst the Council

supports development of the Old Mill

Site, this is on the proviso that a suitable

and safe footway is installed as a

condition of any planning consent given

and that the Council agrees with the

proposed layout of the 33 homes, once

    detailed plans are available. The

Council would also like to see

improvements made to the junction of

the B1153, Back Street and B1145, Lynn

Road within the application. The Council

also had no objection to the construction

of a new dwelling on land West of White

Lodge, however, echoed the concerns of

a close neighbour to both sites that

construction at each site should be

    staged to avoid unnecessary

    inconvenience to neighbours.

    Website

The Council considered the website in

    conjunction with its responsibility to

make its financial and other information

available to parishioners via the site in

the future. The Councillors viewed the

    website of another parish council,

    and whilst they

acknowledged that Forest Row is a

much larger Parish than Gayton, it was

agreed that the layout and presentation

of the website is something that Gayton

Parish Council should strive for. The

    website administrator has agreed to

restructure the website for 100 and the

    www.forestrow.gov.uk

    Council agreed to accept this.

    Bus Shelter at Vicarage Lane

The Council noted that the guttering on

the bus shelter is in a bad state and

requested a quotation for its repair.

Nigel Drew provided a quotation of 195

to replace all broken and rotting

    guttering. This was accepted.

    Dog Fouling

The Council noted a report from Sharon

    Ludford, Neighbourhood Officer at the

    Borough Council, regarding the

campaign to help prevent dog fouling on

the footpaths in Gayton. Sharon felt that

the visits that she and a PCSO made to

the parish at different times of the day

and week were very positve and helped

remind dog owners that they must

always pick up after their dogs and that

a 75 fixed penalty fee can be issued to

them on the spot if they do not. The

Council was grateful for the work that

Sharon put into this campaign along with

    the PCSO.

    Next Parish Council Meeting

The next Parish Council Meeting will be

held at 7.30pm on 14th July at Gayton

    Jubilee Hall.

    Gayton W I

Our members who attended the Science

day at Swanton Morley had a most

    enjoyable, and informative, meeting with

    excellent speakers covering such

subjects as brain injuries, the sky at

    night, volcanoes and police forensic

work when we took our own fingerprints.

The Flower Festival at Walpole St. Peter

was a delight with over 7000 worth of

flowers. The displays were creative and

    stunningly beautiful, the colours co-

ordinated to glorious effect. A visit which

was most enjoyable and we will certainly

    go again next year.

Another visit was to Ware Hall House in

Wells, a mediaeval house which was

moved brick, beam and rafter by rafter

from Ware in Hertfordshire to Wells by

Miss Savage in order to save the lovely

building from being demolished for a

roundabout! We were welcomed by the

current owner with tea and cake before

being given a guided tour of the house.

Our various visits are fun and

    educational!

Disappointment was felt that our speaker

for our June meeting did not arrive, so

Dr Penny Watkins gave us another of

her talks, this time on 'Bras', and Penny

Andrews filled in with a brief talk on her

time as housekeeper. As one member

said 'We had our two penny worth'.

We have a fish and chip supper planned

and our June speaker is coming in

    August.

May I remind you that offers of bulbs,

early flowering please, will be gratefully

received in early September for us to

    plant round the village.

Council Tax Banding Scam Borough Council of King's Lynn and

West Norfolk residents are being warned

about a scam that has already seen at

least one person tricked out of over

    500. A resident received a call from

someone claiming to be from the

council, informing her that her property

band for council tax was too high. They

asked her to pay 561 in order for them

to look into the matter and reduce her

    banding. Unfortunately, the resident

made the payment. The matter has been

reported to Trading Standards. If you

receive a call about your council tax you

should verify that the call is genuine by

taking the callers name and then calling

    the switchboard on 01553 616200.

If someone has concerns over their

    banding, they should contact the

Valuation Office who will look into the

matter free of charge, (see your council

tax bill for contact details) or at

    www.west-norfolk.gov.uk.

    GAYTON THORPE NEWS

    Gayton Thorpe Parish News

    Dave

Dave, our long haired Ginger cat, went

walkabout recently. He has done it

before but only for a couple of days, so

we were getting worried when it went to

three and four. Luckily we heard from

Paul and Susanna that he had been

spotted in the back with the lovely Lily. It

still took him a day to get back from

there but it was a relief. He did,

however, bring back quite a few fleas.

So at great expense we have de-flead

everyone, had to get Jo in a headlock to

do her. Anyway, just to say thank you to

everyone who kept an eye out for him.

Hopefully he will stay local for a while.

    Highways

I think that Highways have now

completed all the work in the village that

they had agreed after our meeting. They

have also been through the village

recently and are going to fill some pot

    holes.

The next Parish Council meeting will be

on 14th July 2014 at 7.30pm. If anyone

has any issue they would like me to

raise please let me know or come along

    to the meeting.

    l Churchyard Clean Up

As most of you will know, sadly, Donald

has been unwell, and we have not had

the benefit of his efforts in the

churchyard for some time. So it has

begun to look rather uncared for. It had

a strim in June, but with this warm

weather with regular rain, it will be

growing up quickly. We thought it would

be a good opportunity to have a village

get together to have a bit of a tidy up,

like we used to years ago.

So, please come along on the 10th July

from 6.30pm onwards to lend a hand.

    The more, the merrier!

Refreshments will be available and the

tower will be opened up, in case anyone

would like to have a climb up to see the

    view!

    Next service

Our next service will be held at Gayton

Thorpe church on the 24th July at 7pm.

As usual, it will be a short service with

tea/ coffee, cake and opportunity for a

    chat afterwards.

Come along and have a sing!

    QEH Matters

I am a public governor for the QEH

    Foundation Trust. NHS Foundation

Trusts are free from central government

control and are able to decide how to

    improve their services. They are

    accountable to their local communities

and local people can become members

    and governors. The governors

represent the interests of the local

    community and communicate and share

    key information with other members.

We want to encourage people who live

in our catchment area to become

members of the Trust. You will have

more say in how your hospital is

developed for you and the whole

community. Anyone aged 16 and over,

and living within the area, is eligible to

become a member . If you become a

public member it shows you care about,

and have an interest in the services we

provide. It is free and involves nothing

more than receiving information. It is up

to you how much or how little you wish

to be involved. You can join online by

    going to the Trust website

    or phone the

    office for a form 01553 613142.

Many of you will have read about the

CQC visit last year and its report which

put the hospital in Special Measures.

The Trust's immediate aim is to continue

to be the preferred hospital for local

    people, providing easily available

    emergency and specialist services. They

are working with GPs and other users to

provide a service which meets the needs

of the local population and find ways of

improving efficiency. The CQC will be

visiting the hospital again in July and

there should be some feedback by

    September for the next edition.

    www.qehkl.nhs.uk

I have been writing regular updates in

    the Grimston parishes' magazine and

would now like to include the Gayton

parishes . I am told that people find them

informative, as we all have an interest in

    happenings at our local hospital.

    GAYTON THORPE NEWS

    Individual Electoral

    Registration

    This year's annual registration exercise

starts on 4th August and for the first time

everyone will be responsible for their

    own registration. This is called

    Individual Electoral Registration (IER)

and replaces the previous system which

allowed one member of a household to

register everyone who lived at their

    address.

All currently registered electors will have

their name and address checked against

    government records. Those whose

    details are confirmed will automatically

transfer to the IER register without

having to do anything and will be

    notified. Anyone whose details cannot

be confirmed will also be notified and

    asked to provide additional information

in order to be registered under IER.

    Households where nobody is currently

registered will be sent a Household

Enquiry Form (HEF). The purpose of

this is to ask whether anyone in the

house needs to register. If so they will

then be sent an Invitation to Register

(ITR). Their details will then also be

    checked against government records

    before they can be registered.

    The Electoral Registration Officer would

    very much appreciate householders' co-

operation in making the change to IER

as smooth as possible by promptly

    responding to any form received.

In the event that anyone in a

    household receives neither

    confirmation of automatic transfer to

IER, a HEF nor an ITR, he/she will

need to contact the Electoral Helpline

on 01553 616773. This will particularly

apply to young people approaching the

age of 18 but could also apply to anyone

who has joined a household but not yet

    registered.
