Does lobbying Work?

tLocally your Chamber works on a number of issues, both on a short-term and an ongoing basis. Apart from providing the business perspective on the news of the day, our stance on the Trent Severn Waterway helped convince the government to cancel their plans to modify the boating season this year and hear from the key stakeholders who do business along the Waterway. We’ve provided feedback to Council on everything from the location of a

Public Square to the Police Services’ Budget. We were very proud to be named the “Partner of the Year” by the New Canadians Centre, and have been extremely active on the issue of immigrant integration. We continue to support the Shining Waters Railway Corporation and the extension of the 407. On the broader scale, with initiatives like the Prosperity Round Table and the Government Affairs Committee, as well as the work of our regular monthly Policy Committee, we emphasize cooperation between the various levels of government, and a continual focus on business, the economic engine of the economy.

As a member of both the Ontario and the Canadian Chambers of Commerce, we are active (very active actually) with both the provincial and federal governments.

Federally the Chamber network has convinced the government to:- Limit employer EI premium rate

increases to 7cents per $100, saving business $750 million in 2011/12.

- Lower the general Corporate Income Tax rate from 16.5% in 2011 to 15% in 2012, saving business $1.5 billion per year.

- Introduce a bilateral commitment to improve the efficiency of Canada-US Border operations.

- Launch a Red Tape Reduction initiative.

Provincially the Chamber Network has convinced the government to:

- Establish a formal Business Sector Strategy, which so far has met on six sectors:

o Building and Land Development

o Manufacturingo Medical Technologyo Information and

Communications Technologyo Agriculture and Agri-Foodo Hospitality

- Commit to a balanced budget by 2017.

- Endorse our “Emerging Stronger – A Transformative Agenda for Ontario” Report, which recommends five key strategies for Ontario:

o Focus on innovation and productivity

o Build a 21st Century workforceo Restore fiscal balanceo Take advantage of the global

economyo Invest in our key competitive

advantages

So yes, lobbying works, of course it does.

Stuart Harrison, President & CEO, 705-748-9771 ext 202 [email protected]

he short answer is: Yes, of course it does, but since I have a 400 word-count I’m going to give you some solid examples.

ExCEllEnCEmattersWe need your help to recognize, showcase and celebrate all of the talented local businesses we are so fortunate to enjoy!!!

mBefore we can begin the celebrations though we need you to seize this opportunity and recognize the outstanding work your organization has done, or the outstanding work of another local company - or you can do both!

Since the 2011 Excellence Awards Dinner wrapped up, the Excellence Committee has been diligently working away to further simplify the nomination process, with an eye to addressing any concerns prior to the launch of the 2012 Excellence Awards nominations. These efforts will provide an easier and smoother nomination process for everyone!

Providing a third-party nomination is simple - all you have to do is choose the category the nominee deserves to be in, provide us with 100 words to describe why you believe this company should be nominated, and then submit the nomination to us. We will contact the nominee for the additional information required for the judging process.

Please check out our website at www.peterboroughchamber.ca and click on “Excellence Awards 2012”, and this will provide you with all the information about the Excellence Awards, as well as an editable form for each category.

If you have any questions, please call the Chamber Office at 705-748-9771 x0 and we will be glad to answer your questions.

Early Bird Draw: If you submit a nomination prior to July 31st you will automatically be entered into a draw to win 2 FREE TICKETS to attend the event, so submit your nomination now!

Quotes:

“On behalf of Community Care Peterborough, I want to thank the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce for selecting our agency as the winner of the not-for-profit category. What an honour this has been for us. The President of the Board of Community Care Peterborough and staff members had the pleasure of attending the Business Excellence Awards gala and they had a lovely evening. The award and plaque are lovely; feels like we won an academy award.

Again, thank you for this excellent opportunity.”

“…..many thanks for an amazing evening at the Chamber of Commerce Excellence Awards. I have never attended before, so was completely in AWE of what a high-class event it was. I’ve never felt like such a celebrity and we were thrilled of course to have Ross Smith honoured AND receive an award.

Thank you and your amazing team again for a wonderful evening. We are already planning on next year’s entries!”

“….That was by far the most professional, well organized, and FUN business event that I have ever been to. Congratulations.”

For more testimonials to the value of being a Finalist, check out our Excellence Features pages in this issue, on pages 18-21!

ark your calendars now for the 9th Annual Peterborough Business Excellence Awards, being held on Wednesday, October 17th at the Trentwinds International Centre, and join us in rejoicing in the wealth of Excellence we have in the Peterborough Area!

ast September, just before I started my position as Tradeshow Coordinator, I was asked to stop by and check out the Prosperity Tradeshow to see what the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce was all about. I had a pretty good idea already, but the Prosperity Tradeshow is what really put it all into perspective for me. After walking out of that show, I was excited to be a part of this organization with an amazing membership and I could not wait to start work the next week!

oThe Expo was full of a diverse range of vendors, with everything from yoga, meditation and Reiki to chiropractic care, massage and fitness. Throughout the day, there were workshops and speakers who presented different topics and then participated in a question and answer period with the audience. There were also demonstrations over the course of the day where attendees were invited to participate or simply observe.

Vendors, attendees and staff enjoyed some delicious food from Stickling’s Bakery and some organic coffee from Kyoto Coffee.

It was the first year for the Chamber to run the Wellness Expo and the feedback we received from vendors, speakers and demonstrators was that it was a very well-organized event and everyone had a great day!

“It was obvious that you and the other organizers were incredibly on top of everything, offering your help and doing a wonderful job offering this wonderful show to the community. Your work before, during and now after the Wellness Expo is very much appreciated and we would love to participate again next year.” Angela Kidd, The Best of Hearing Centre

n Saturday, May 5th, the Chamber of Commerce held the 5th Annual Peterborough Wellness Expo at the Evinrude Centre from 10am-5pm.

Cathy MartinBy the time you receive this issue of Voice of Business, Cathy Martin (our Event Coordinator/Marketing Assistant) will have already left us to move to Houston Texas with her family, due to her husband Dan’s recent promotion with Sysco.

Although we are all sad to see Cathy leave as she was not only part of our invaluable team, but a member of the Chamber Family, we wish Cathy and her family all the best in their new adventure!

Moving Forward....Along with the Tradeshow Coordinator responsibilities, Sara Lunn will now assume the duties for the major events and, along with the Front Line Coordinator responsibilities Shelby Parker will assume the duties for the Business After Hours and Breakfast Club.

We wish Sara and Shelby well as they take on these new responsibilities!

are We Ready?

m“When discussing the next pandemic, the concern is not if it will happen, but when,” said Dr. Rosana Pellizzari, Medical Officer of Health and one of the presenters. “Since the influenza virus is always changing, getting your flu shot every year is one of the best ways people can prepare themselves because the vaccine contains the current strains that are actually circulating.”

Current influenza strains of concern to public health officials include H5N1, also known as the avian flu, which has been identified in Indonesia, Cambodia and Egypt. While this strain only sporadically infects people, it has a high fatality rate so scientists are closely monitoring it to watch for any increase in its ability to spread from human to human.

Dr. Pellizzari commended local health organizations for their high level of cooperation during the H1N1 pandemic and their continued collaboration to ensure monitoring and response systems are in place to take action the next time a pandemic virus strikes our community.

She also noted the latest scientific developments in vaccine production including new methods involving plants that enable vaccines to be replicated in days instead of growing antigens in eggs which takes months.

Margaret Jay, Infection Control Lead for the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, presented the hospital’s incident management system which includes stockpiling anti-virals and medical supplies in addition to mapping out how it handles capacity surges when significant health events arise. She also stressed the importance of seeking out credible sources of information as a way to be prepared for the next pandemic.

Emergency Management Ontario’s JoAnn Knopf-Hedley provided an overview of recent emergencies that took place in Ontario and the province’s response role when municipalities require additional support. She also explained the

importance of having a family emergency plan and how to assemble a 72-hour kit.

This event was held in recognition of Emergency Preparedness Week from May 6th-12th, 2012.

Further information about pandemic preparedness is available by visiting www.pcchu.ca and searching for the Health Unit’s Pandemic Preparedness plan. For further information, please contact: Brittany Cadence, Communications Supervisor at 705-743-1000 x391.

ore than one hundred people attended the May 10th event “Are We Ready for the Next Pandemic?” to learn about the present state of pandemic planning locally and provincially. They also received an update from the Peterborough County-City Health Unit on potentially dangerous influenza viruses currently circulating the globe.

April“20 Days to Great Customer Service”Barb Bruce of MyRadius Consulting Services spoke to a group of about 20 small business owners for an hour in April about the importance of excellent customer service. Barb touched on some of the key portions of her normal three hour seminar entitled “Knock Their Socks Off Service”.

With some take home exercises and a 20-day plan for service greatness, attendees were pushed to accept nothing but greatness when it comes to customer service.

If you would like more information, or if you are interested in hosting customer service training for your staff, Barb can be contacted at [email protected].

Participants at the event included a wide-range of demographics of business owners from non-profit to Retail to Service industries. Feedback from participants included:

“I have been hesitant to use Timelines but now I understand how they work.”

CHAMBERevents

Are you a young professional under 40, or have someone on your staff who is? The Chamber’s Young Professionals Group (YPG) is a great place for networking, professional development and promoting your business in an engaging atmosphere.

YPG was fortunate to host the May Business After Hours at The Venue and held our annual YPG Tradeshow. This was a great opportunity for Chamber businesses to show off their newer employees and for our young entrepreneurs to promote themselves to the rest of the Chamber membership.

Our June YPG meeting will be held on Thursday, June 28th, when Winston Bromley of Artbox will be hosting a session on Social Media’s Pinterest. In July, YPG will join the rest of the Chamber membership for the annual Summer Social being held on Wednesday, July 4th at the Silver Bean Café. YPG will resume at The Venue in August for the annual Speed Networking event! Don’t miss out on any of these great events!

The YPG meets on the fourth Thursday of every month at The Venue from 5 to 7pm. Be sure to attend our next event, or send a representative from your business. For more information, please check out the Chamber’s website at www.peterboroughchamber.ca or visit our YPG Facebook page.

This month’s featured guest was Chris Calbury of Emmatt Digital Solutions. He presented “Five Things Every Home Page Should Have To Generate More Business”.

The main purpose of your website’s homepage is to start the sales relationship with your prospects. Here is how to engage and interact with them in order to move the sales process along:

1. State the major problems you solve. – Hit their emotional hot buttons.

2. State why they should buy from you and not your competition. Hint – It’s not about price!

3. Have a compelling Call-to-Action. - When visitors come to your website how can you follow up with them if you don’t know who they are?

4. Have a personalized greeting such as a welcoming video. - People prefer to do business with people they like and connect with.

5. Make it EASY to contact you. - Your phone number and email address should be prominently displayed on every page.

If you missed this informative Presentation, you can find the flyer in the “Call-to-Action” at www.emmattweb.com!

May

This month’s presenter was Brian Nashman with Scholars Education Centre who spoke about the difference between tutoring, academic upgrading and brain training for children.

Tutoring is basically re-teaching and reviewing what has been taught in class. This assumes that your child has no problem actually understanding concepts and content.

Academic Upgrading is for when your child is performing in school significantly below grade level, perhaps being moved to the next grade without mastering the concepts and content of the previous grade --- a standardized academic assessment is needed to determine the missed skills. An individualized, academic program can target these areas and bring the student up to their grade level.

Brain Training is a helpful tool if you help your child with their homework and they just can’t seem to grasp the concept, or if you need to repeat content because it is forgotten the next day. Also if your child repeatedly gets frustrated and shuts down or refuses to learn, then quite likely there is a learning difficulty. Brain training can improve weak cognitive skills such as short and long-term memory, auditory and visual processing, attention and reasoning.

For more information Brian can be reached at Scholars Education Centre at 705-742-4152 or visit their website www.scholarscanada.com.

The Breakfast Club meets on the second Tuesday of every month at Carousel Restaurant, located at 116 Lansdowne St. E., from 7:30 to 8:30am. Be sure to attend our next event, or send a representative from your business. You do not need to register to attend this event.

Always a fun and energetic group, the YPGers brought their enthusiasm to the Business After Hours event in May. This time, the Young Professionals Group segment of the Chamber had the chance to introduce themselves to a large number of members with a special YPG Tradeshow held at The Venue. Small businesses, especially ones owned by those under 40, don’t always have the budget or resources to staff a typical tradeshow. Everyone had a great time showcasing their businesses and learning a lot about each other.

Taking centre-stage to speak about the current Chamber events and advocacy for local business, Stuart Harrison spoke on the hot topic of retail business holidays and the feedback they’ve been receiving. The Chamber plans to lobby for the choice to enable businesses to profit, as well as be able to spend time with their families on the holidays. Also announced were some staffing changes: Cathy Martin will be leaving the Chamber after four dedicated years and Sara Lunn, a Fleming College graduate, will be filling her shoes.

Ben vanVeen of Sutton Pro Realty, Co-Chair of the YPG Committee, encouraged businesses to join this seven-year-old group, or have their employees under 40 attend to brush up on their networking skills, make connections and attend great events with great speakers!

June by Shelby Parker, Front Line Coordinator

The June’s Business After Hours crowd were given a chance to see inside the impressive new location of D.M. Wills Associates, located at 150 Jameson Drive. The environmentally-responsible building, with an underground water storage structure, a private workout centre and a fully functional kitchen, wowed members as they toured the facility.

“We don’t build things, we design them,” stated President of D.M. Wills Associates, Bruce Bonner. He went on to explain not only the strong reputation of the firm, but also their history, their role in the community today, and their future endeavours.

“Our purpose is to improve the quality of life and improve public safety,” stated Mr. Bonner as he went through some of D.M. Will’s impressive

portfolio within the Peterborough area. This included their role as Civil Design Consultants on the new PRHC; providing all civil site services, design and contract administration services to Trent University for the new facility and expansion projects; and design and building consulting services to the Ministry of Transportation on various projects on bridge renovations and highway expansions.

The crowd of over 100 attendees enjoyed a barbecue, refreshments and snacks, as well as tours of the building. The door prizes, a compound mitre saw and a table saw, went to Mark Griffiths of Nightingale Nursing and Rebecca Schillemat with the Peterborough and The Kawarthas Association of Realtors.

Our Business After Hours events take place on the first Tuesday of every month, from 4 to 6pm, at various member business locations. Be sure to attend our next event, or send a representative from your business.

News from the OCC Emerging Stronger: A Transformative Agenda for OntarioDeveloped in partnership with The Mowat Centre and Leger Marketing, Emerging Stronger: A Transformative Agenda for Ontario outlines a strategic plan for how to best leverage Ontario’s competitive advantages into greater prosperity.

This economic vision serves as a foundation for dialogue with government and civic leaders about opportunities for progress and what Ontario needs to do, but most importantly, what Ontario can become.

Priorities

Emerging Stronger is the result of consultation with Ontario’s business, government and civic leaders (including non-profit, Aboriginal and labour). The priorities identified by these leaders include:

1. Fostering a culture of innovation and smart risk-taking in order to become a productivity leader.

2. Building a 21st Century workforce through workplace training, utilizing newcomers’ skills and apprenticeship reform.

3. Restoring fiscal balance by improving the way government works.

4. Taking advantage of new opportunities in the global economy.

5. Identifying, championing and investing in

our competitive advantages.

Developing Ontario’s First Ever Immigration StrategyThe Ontario government has announced that the province will develop its first-ever immigration strategy to help build a stronger economy.

A new expert roundtable led by Julia Deans and including Allan O’Dette, President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC), will help develop the strategy and examine ways that immigration can best support Ontario’s economic development and help New Ontarians find jobs.

Ontario remains the number one destination for newcomers to Canada yet it is the only province currently without an immigration agreement with the federal government. The new provincial immigration strategy will help to inform and shape discussions with the federal government towards an agreement.

A Wellness Program may seem like a superficial benefit to a business owner who keeps a watchful eye on their firm’s overhead and expenses, but there are very good reasons for an employer to consider implementing one.

Employee absenteeism due to lifestyle related illnesses is quite common today and costs Canadian businesses significant money in lost production. I have read that hypertension, lung cancer and adult-onset diabetes accounts for as much as 90% of health care costs in Canada.

According to a Statistics Canada study physical inactivity also impacts health care costs as fewer Canadians are taking part in physical exercise that provides cardiovascular benefits.

Canada’s aging population, coupled with longer life expectancy, means that there are increasingly more employees susceptible to suffer from ailments such as back and joint problems, repetitive strain injuries

and disabilities associated with premature cardiovascular disease.

With new technologies and the downsizing of businesses in order to remain competitive, the fear of layoffs, concerns about job security, hiring freezes and financial well-being are causes of increased stress and anxiety by employees who must carry heavier workloads. Disability claims and drugs prescribed for the treatment of stress and anxiety increase at a precarious rate every year.

As costs for prescription drugs increase faster than the rate of inflation and provincial governments continue to reduce funding of health care services, thereby shifting medical costs to private benefit plans, employers will continue to pick up the costs through higher premiums.

Case studies indicate that employers who introduce Wellness Programs that encourage regular fitness and exercise will benefit by reduced absenteeism, as well as employees with more positive attitudes. Other components of Wellness Programs include nutrition and weight management, back care and repetitive strain injury prevention, stress management, smoking cessation and health education. To implement a successful program three steps need to be taken: 1. Conduct a workplace health audit; 2. Conduct an employee health audit; and 3. Develop a strategic plan.

I would agree that there is a direct link between an employee’s mental and physical well-being and job performance. Of course it would be ideal to have an in-house gym at the workplace, but organizing a daily 20-minute brisk walk during the lunch hour can easily be done with no start-up costs and in a very short period of time could pay big dividends.
