  • TO ALL PARISHIONERS

Through the eyes of a child

Seeing the world through the eyes of a child can be amusing and also illuminating. I

came across a number of comments made by a group of very young children when

asked what they thought of the church. Here are just a few:

Those comments gave me more than one smile and a chuckle to myself, but they

    also made me think.

Children see things in a very straight forward, literal way and they are not afraid to

say what they think. In that way they are often more honest than us adults. They

can reveal much to us. However, unless something is explained and taught to them

they will simply 'say what they see.' Rather like the TV quiz show 'catch phrase'!

I really enjoy the contact I have with the children in our villages, through the schools,

guiding groups, messy church and family services on Sundays. If I were to carry out

my own survey about 'the church' (now there's a thought) with our children (which

includes messy church and collective worship in school) I hope most would say 'it's

fun'. I sincerely hope none of them would say they have to be taken out to 'calm

down'! And I hope that at least some would 'see' the church as the place where they

come to learn about the life of Jesus and the stories he told which teach us how

to live His Way and become better, more loving, happier people. And ultimately

where we not only learn about, but discover the love of God for ourselves.

The Vicar lives in the Church. The church is built for God to live in, except you can't

find him in there. You can find the Vicar. It's God who's harder to find. I think maybe

he's hiding. The church has lots of windows, but they're high up so you can't look out

of them. They have Bible people painted on them. God is in some of them, but he

looks quite angry. Maybe that's because all these people are sitting in his house.

There is a very important table called an altar. But it doesn't alter, it doesn't do

anything, it just stands there. If you run around the church when the Vicar is talking,

you get dragged off and taken out the church for five minutes. Then Dad says I've

got to calm down. Sometimes Dad takes me out to calm down three or four times.

Sometimes I was calm already! There's a big box up the front on top of some steps,

it's for standing in when you tell people about God. Except the Vicar doesn't go up

there, he stands down the bottom with everyone else, and tells them what to do from

there. Prayers are like asking God for things, but God must hate you asking for

things, because when the person's asking the prayers everybody else ducks down

and hides behind the chair in front!

Let the little children come to me, do not stop them, for it is to such as these

that the kingdom of God belongs and he took them up in his arms, laid

hands on them, and blessed them. Mark 10.13-16

  • ASHWICKEN, LEZIATE & BAWSEY NEWS

    3.6million pounds.

You may well have seen the signs that

Anglian Water is spending 3.6 million

on a new sewerage scheme at

    Ashwicken.

It is an awful lot of money, but some

homes are having terrible problems. So

it is a good thing. part of the scheme

    involves siting a sewage treatment

works in Church Lane and the residents

are not very happy about that. It will

cover 2/3 of an acre and be completely

open to view. It is also situated directly

on a difficult bend and there are

concerns about fly tipping and others.

Worst of all it will completely blot the

    landscape.

Other sewage works locally are set away

from public gaze, often down farm tracks

and even then completely screened. So

    what can be done?

An alternative site exists and has

already been offered to Anglian Water.

A group of CARERS, representing the

views of all opponents, have set out their

    objections to the planning authorities.

They are discussing the situation with

Toby Coke, our NCC councillor and

Henry Bellingham our local MP. They

have also leafleted every single home in

Ashwicken, 158 and, so far, have

received 118 votes in favour of their

petition that: "Anglian Water review the

    current proposal and review the

    alternative site." There were just

4 abstentions and only 1 person voted

    for the existing site.

Thanks go to everyone for their support

and we now hope that Anglian Water do

    the right thing.

    But

Planning permission has not yet been

granted and it may be that, by the time

you read this, everything will have been

settled. Let us hope it is the right thing.

As many of you may have heard we had

our chickens stolen from the school site

    on Saturday 8 June.

The theft was discovered by one of our

parents when he and his daughter came

to feed the chickens on the Sunday

morning. The wire fence had been

carefully cut and five of our beloved pet

    chickens had gone, leaving the

    remaining chicken, 'Betty Boo Boo',

    quivering in her nest.

The children, staff and parents are

clearly very upset and puzzled as to why

someone would do such a despicable

crime. The children lovingly reared these

chickens from eggs five years ago and

they have been part of our school 'family'

for such a long time. The children used

to collect the eggs every day and the

chickens would follow them around as

    they were so tame.

'Betty' has been re-homed with a local

family and now all we have is an empty

    chicken run.

Many thanks to all those kind people

who have offered to replace our

chickens and help mend the fence.

If anyone has any information about the

theft then please contact the local police

    or the school.

  • Leziate Parish Council

    Meeting held 12 June 2013.

    Several residents attended from Church

Lane and presented the results of their

recent survey and consultation on the

sewage treatment works. It was made

very clear that the residents and indeed

the Parish Council are supportive of the

scheme, but it appears that the vast

majority of residents in the immediate

vicinity are against the siting of the

    treatment works.

After much debate, it was agreed that

the Parish Council would support the

residents in this and write to Anglian

Water and also Norfolk County Council

to ask them to reconsider the site and

    change to alternative site 2.

Cllr Beales, Borough Councillor and Cllr

    Coke, County Councillor also supported

    this.

The Chair, Cllr Eayres, welcomed Cllr

Coke to his first Parish Council meeting

and we all look forward to him being a

    regular at future meetings.

Toby Coke gave a report on the progress

of stopping the incinerator and reported

that Cabinet Scrutiny is calling for an

    independent report on the cost

implications of pulling out of the contract.

He also reported that they are asking

    central Government for help in

    extricating themselves from the contract.

    Andy Wallace, the NCC highways

engineer for the area, was present at the

meeting. He promised to look at the

verge cutting which has been patchy in

places. Andy believes it may be

because NCC are only funding two cuts,

meaning maybe the first cut was left too

    long.

    th

Reports were heard about the use of

motorised craft at the sailing club and

    advertising of wakeboarding and water

skiing. Cllr Beales has reported this to

the Borough and it will become an

enforcement issue if it continues. It is

imperative that any sightings or hearings

of motorised craft are reported to the

Borough Council so a full record can be

    kept of any such incidents.

Our local PCSO was at the meeting and

gave a report on happenings in the

Parish. She is still working on controlling

motor bikes and litter at Bawsey pits and

will be issuing leaflets in several

languages to the people she meets

    there.

The Parish Council was saddened to

hear about the theft of the chickens from

the school. This was a particularly nasty

crime and if anyone has information then

they are requested to phone 101.

The Parish Council next meets on

    May Meeting Report

    June Meeting

The speaker for the May meeting on

    Tuesday 21 May was Rosemary

Fenson, talking about herbs and spices.

We were given lots of health tips on how

to use chives, mint, parsley, rosemary,

    lavender, horseradish, garlic, cloves and

many more. The old saying '

    , you do

need to eat the apple skin for the pectin

    in it.

    Rosemary was very interesting and

certainly knew her herbs and spices.

She was thanked by President Eileen

    Baxter.

A recipe using any of these was won by

Ali South, 2 Margareta Whiskin, 3

Sylvia Webber. Raffle winner was Janet

    Jary.

WI members are to prepare and serve

refreshments at Leziate Village Fete on

    Saturday 6 July.

The WI annual AGM national meeting is

    in Cardiff. Lesley Haywood-Nudge from

Pentney is our delegate. The resolution

is the decline of high street shopping

and we all voted for this resolution. After

    enjoying refreshments, the meeting

    closed.

    The members present enjoyed creating

a ceramic item of pottery. Frances

Morton from Hunstanton brought lots of

pieces to paint. Platters and tiles were

mostly chosen by members, as they

    seemed easier. One member managed

to create her house name with a frog,

which she drew on a tile. All items were

taken back to the premises to be fired

and will be returned in the near future.

It was so interesting. Frances was very

helpful in the choice of colours and

designs used. Janet Eason arranged for

this project and she gave the vote of

two of our special members, Jean

    Withers and Joan Brown, are

    receiving hospital treatment and were

unable to be with us. Hopefully they

will both be back with us soon.

    Raffle winner was Myrtle Roberts.

    Dersingham Flower Festival in July

    was discussed and members agreed

to book meals in advance. It is

    always an enjoyable flower festival

and lunches are served in the hall

    across from the church.

    New members always welcome. We

  • Incinerator update

The County Council was meant to be

debating getting out of the incinerator

contract on 17 June. However, officers

did not allow all members to see the

contract. Instead, a press release was

issued suggesting it could cost over

80million to walk away. An officers

report said compensation would be due

to Cory Wheelabrator even if corruption

    had occurred.

This prompts the questions: what other

surprises are still 'lurking' in the contract

and were any of the terms negotiated

    favourable to Norfolk County Council?

Cabinet agreed a QC should examine

the contract and review the advice given

to the Council that led to it being signed.

It was also agreed that waste industry

    experts would assess the potential

savings that could be made from

    alternative waste treatments. These are

likely to be significant, because more

    advanced waste treatments are both

    cheaper and more efficient. Cory

    Wheelabrator's technology was 'state of

the art' in Germany and America around

20 years ago. Things have moved on

and expensive marketing does not make

up for having an out of date product.

On 10 June 2013, Cabinet approved in

    full recommendations which included

    having independent waste industry

    experts prepare a Waste Management

report looking at what can be saved by

using alternatives. It will be a good

opportunity for the new administration to

show it is better than the last.

  • Gayton Parish Council News

    Meeting held 10 June 2013

Robert Webster and his brother attended

the meeting to give the councillors more

information on what sort of equipment

they, and others their age in the Parish,

would like to see on the playing field.

Robert had secured the names of

several people in the village who would

    support the installation of skate/BMX

ramps and made a very convincing

argument to the Council that the

    equipment would benefit the whole

Parish. The Clerk suggested that the

    Council consider renting skate/BMX

ramps for the day so that residents can

see what they look like and how much

noise they generate. This was met with

general support and costings will be

    investigated.

    The Charity Commission has confirmed

that as custodian trustees, the Parish

Council has no powers or responsibilities

to maintain the Hall should there come a

time when there are no management

    trustees in position. The current

    management trustees can appoint the

Parish Council as trustees to run the

charity, but this could only be done

following a public meeting and the

    current management trustees decision

to do so. The Council agreed that it

would do all it could to help support the

current trustees and that the Hall is a

    valuable parish commodity that should

be maintained for as long as possible.

The Clerk reported that NCC has agreed

to cover the costs of the termination

documents so that the leased land can

be relinquished. It is a condition that

    adequate fencing is installed between

the land owned by the Jubilee Hall Trust

and the leased land and is in place

within 6 months of vacancy. It was

    th

    Skate/MBX Ramps

    Jubilee Hall

    Termination of lease

agreed that this would be achievable as

a potential new tenant of the owned land

could install the fencing in lieu of rent.

It was noted that nearly all of the

volunteers for the new speedwatch team

have been successfully vetted. Mr Grant

has also toured the Parish, including

Gayton Thorpe, with the police to agree

on sites for where the speedwatch team

can operate. The team are now waiting

for a training date before operations can

    commence.

  • Gayton continues to enjoy its sporting

success this summer. Our tri-golf team

qualified for the final at Middleton, where

they put in a fine performance.

    The Year 4

    mini-tennis

    team won the

    cluster event

    and went

    through to the

    final in June.

    Here Chloe

    Papworth is

    helping steer

    the team to

    victory.

Katelin Taylor competed at the area

    Swimming

    Gala and

    came away

    with an

    outstanding 2

    Gold medals.

    We are very

    proud that she

    was able to

represent the school at this event.

We would also like to say a big thank

you to Ashwicken School who came to

Gayton for our first 'home' football match

    in our new football kit.

It was a very enjoyable match with

plenty of parents to cheer the children

on. Even Goslings came along to

support the teams. Gayton Primary FC

were delighted to win . An excellent

team effort with plenty of chances on

    both sides.

This term we have also been busy out

and about on our school trips. Banham

    Zoo was a

    fantastic day out

    for the older

    classes.

    What strange

    creatures are

    these?

Otter and Badger classes opened their

own Roman Museum for the day.

Parents and children were invited to

    taste Roman food, attack Roman

    soldiers, play Roman board games,

watch the archeologists at work, learn

about Roman times using the computer

and look at the work the children had

    completed this term.

    Messy Church on the Beach

    Thursday 25

    July, leaving

    Gayton at 4pm,

    returning from

    Heacham South

    Beach approx

    6.30pm

We completed our story of what

happened to Jesus after he rose from

the dead by looking at the Bible account

of when the Holy Spirit first came upon

    Jesus' followers.

The Holy Spirit came - and the Holy

Spirit is here to stay and can be with all

of us as our guide and comforter.

Sadly we had to say goodbye to

    Margaret Howard who has played

keyboard for us (and done so much

more) since we began Messy Church in

September 2011. We wish her and

Rev'd William a very happy retirement.

Despite the sad farewell as usual we

had a great deal of fun with craft activity

    and singing and food.

And the fun just goes on because in

    July we have:

The cost of the beach trip will be 3.00

per person (adult or child) to include a

seat on the coach and a simple picnic.

    th

The coach will leave from outside the

Social Club in Gayton (opposite the

    school).

If you haven't yet booked your place

    contact:

    Rev'd Jane 01553 636227.

    First come first served.

    We take a break.

Messy Church wishes you all a happily

messy summer with lots of fun and

    sunshine (hopefully!).

We look forward to seeing you all again

in September. In the meantime do join

us for our family services at St Nics.

    Jane welcomed Gayton WI members

and guests from Terrington St Clement

    and Leziate, Bawsey and Ashwicken

WIs to our 60 Anniversary of the

    Queen's Coronation meeting.

The hall was decorated in a truly

patriotic style with members entering into

the spirit of the evening by dressing in

    red, white and blue.

    Entertainment was provided by Patsy

Rose who, through her guitar playing

and singing, took some of us back to our

youth. Her repertoire included the Twist,

the Music Man with all the actions and

Tina Turner's 'Simply the Best'. After a

break for a delicious buffet, supplied by

members, Patsy again took to the floor

and, with a little encouragement, so did

several members; joining in with the

Hokey Cokey and a Conga, which was

    great to see.

The raffle was won by Margaret, Molly

    from Terrington, Deirdre, Florence, Ann

    and Marguerite from Leziate. The

competition for 'a rose' was won by

    Penny A, 2 Sandra and 3 Jane.

It really was a lovely celebration

meeting. If you think you would like to

see what the WI can offer you, please do

come along to the Jubilee Hall on the

first Tuesday of the month, at 7.30pm.

You will be made most welcome.

    Gayton Road Fisheries was established

in 1991 by Chris and Lynda Newell. We

have developed a quiet and relaxing

enclosed 10 acre site with three superb

    fisheries containing English Carp, Tench

and Wels Catfish. Fishing is only

available to guests staying with us in

one of our lodges or in a caravan /

    motorhome. In addition, there are

    holiday lodge plots available.

Gayton Road Fisheries are also fisheries

managers of the nearby Nar Valley

Fisheries and Hobbs Lake Trout Fishery.

    We specialise in fisheries management

and stock fish supplies. We can supply

    Carp, Tench, Wels Catfish, Roach,

Rudd, and Bream. Stock management is

carried out using seine nets and electro

fishing techniques. We have also been

involved in the design of new lake

    projects and fisheries management

plans. Indeed, many local fisheries have

    benefitted from the involvement of

    Gayton Road Fisheries.

Chris has been a committee member for

the Anglian region of the Institute of

Fisheries Management for 20 years. For

  • difficult day as the aches, pains and the

dreaded blisters started to take their toll.

    After a grueling 36 miles and 13hrs

although hoping to reach Stiffkey, it was

    decided to finish at Wells.

Day 3, 5am on another sunny day

Fresh legged Julian, Brad and I along

with Syrena Sheldrick joined the walk

    weary but ever determined challengers

ready to start the final stage.

Starting from Wells we continued on the

Coastal Path keeping to the shoreline

    passing through Stiffkey, Blakney, Cley-

    next-the-Sea, Weybourne, and

Sheringham to finish at Cromer Pier 26

    miles in 8hrs.

Here we were met by loud cheers and

clapping of friends and family who had

gathered at the finish. For those who

completed the entire three day challenge

they all agreed it was the hardest

    challenge to date.

Well done to the amazing challengers

and driver who completed the entire

    three day challenge.

    Megan's Challenge News

Our challenge this year was to walk The

Peddars Way and Norfolk Coastal Route

(approx 93 miles) over three days from

24 to 26 May Our chosen charity for

    this challenge is Nelson's Journey.

    Nelson's Journey, based in Norwich,

helps children who need support when

someone close to them dies. They help

them find ways of coping with their

    bereavement, enabling them to look

    forward to a happy future.

Day 1, 7am on the Peddars Way at

    Knettishall Heath.

After a heavy rainfall the previous night

    the challengers Stephen, Jamie,

    Simon, Emily-Jane, Clare Howard and

Helen were assured by the support

driver Dom 'Bonny Lad' McCallum there

would be no more rain. Within half an

hour of setting off the heavens opened,

so it was waterproofs on, hoods up and

    heads down.

After 22 miles of wet tracks and muddy

footpaths they met Dom at Swaffham, a

chance to change socks and a hot drink.

The final 10 miles took them through

Castle Acre (linking with Nar Valley Way)

up to Great Massingham where the first

stage finished, 32 miles in 10 hours.

Day 2, 7am, on the Peddars Way at

    Great Massingham

A sunny day as the challengers

continued towards Ringstead, then on to

    Holme-next-the-Sea where the Peddars

    Way finishes.

Here the challengers were picked up by

Dom and taken to Hunstanton to join the

North Coast Path walking east to Wells.

On route at Brancaster church Julian

Howard joined the challengers and they

became seven. This was to be a very

On day 2 of Megan's challenge we

    accompanied the main challengers as

turned round and walked back to Great

Massingham. A total of 6 miles in 1hr

Helen Reed with Daisy and myself.

My work colleagues at Gayton Goslings

Day Care Centre and I did our own

Megs Mini Challenge on Monday 20

May. Our group of 21 pre-school

children, 13 parents and staff followed a

route round Gayton village marked with

yellow butterflies, stopping part way for

a snack of butterfly biscuits. We walked

    2.62 miles in 1hr 25mins and raised

493 which they have donated to

Nelsons Journey. Well done and a big

thank you to everyone who took part.

    th

The total amount raised for Nelsons

Journey so far is approximately 3,120

    (to be confirmed).

A big thank you to Dom McCallum who

was the most amazing support driver

without whom we couldn't of done it,

also to Community Bus Service for

providing the big yellow bus, a most

welcome sight at each stop. Thank you

to Richard at V&J Knitwear for providing

    the challenge tee-shirts. Also many

many thanks to all those who continually
