Bundarra's once-a-year race meeting was held onSaturday 6 October with warm, dry weather attracting a

big crowd of attendees from across the district forthesix race program.

With full fields in each race the punters had a goodselection of likely winners. The feature race, theBooroomooka Angus Bundarra Cup was won by nine-year old campaigner Rhodonite trained by Armidale'sLea Selby. The Uralla Post caught up with someBundarra and Uralla locals at the races.

Thank you UrallaArmidale Legacy, along with all Legacy Clubs

throughout Australia, held its annual Appeals Week, allfunds raised locally are used locally to support theongoing work of Legacy throughout the NorthernTablelands covering Walcha, Uralla, Armidale, Guyra, GlenInnes and Tenterfield districts.

The Appeals Week and Badge sales are the major sourceof income to fund Legacys support of our War Widows, children and disabled dependants and the importance ofthis widespread generosity cannot be underestimated without it Legacy would not survive.

Given the more recent unfortunate casualties inAfghanistan, the catch-cry, dont worry mate, Ill lookafter the wife and kids, and a Legatees undertaking tokeep the promise is as relative today as it was afterWorld War One, when Legacy was first formed.

Thank you to each and everyone of you in Uralla anddistrict who has helped to ensure that Legatees cancontinue to carry out our duty of keeping the promise.

At the recent council elections, we elected our ninecouncillors from across the region and in turn they electedour Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

At the same time we had a referendum to change howwe vote for the Mayor next time we have an election in

four years time. This is an excellent opportunity for anyonein the community to run as a candidate for either Mayor orCouncillor, depending on the level of involvement theywould like. The Mayoral role is a huge job and quitefrankly the mayor is under-paid fro the amount ofcommitment involved.

A number of people have contacted The Uralla Postasking about the referendum and what it means. Somehave inferred that the passing of the YES vote was becausepeople didn't know any better. Normally when peo pledont know about something changing they rarely v ote forthat change.

Similar remarks were made about councillors beingvoted for because they went with someone they knew.Sadly this paper didnt exist early enough for ALLcandidates to throughly get you to know them.

Like it or not, and about 45% dont, the referendum was

voted as YES by approx. 55% of locals. We will all get achance to choose exactly who we want to be Mayor nexttime, not being restricted by the ward we happen to live in,

but perhaps we will vote for someone on their merits andperformance.

So everyone who has ever b een Mayor, Deputy or anyother person who can make a contribution to ourwonderful Shire is welcome to contest the role.

It will be a very interesting contest in four years time, inthe meantime lets make Urall a better.

Council Representation Make Uralla betterThe Uralla Development Association recently held i ts

AGM and editor of this paper, Duncan Fischer was electedas the President and former councillor Steve Powley asVice President.

The main aim of the group is to Make Uralla Better in

all ways that we can. Working with Council as well as localbusinesses, community groups and any individuals thatwould love to get involved, all input is welcomed.

Whether its making Alma Park b etter, having a goat day, developing ideas and strategies to give our young peoplemore to do or just making it the number one travelers stopoff point. Increasing amenities in the main street is just asimportant as lobbying state and federal governments formore funding to fix infrastructure problems or helping outour local farmers and graziers.

Its all about Making Uralla Better and in doing so TheUralla Development association believes that everyone inour shire will reap the benefits.

    Community support boosts

Can Assist UrallaThe Uralla Branch of CanAssist held its AGM recently,

electing Mary Ann Munsie as the new b ranch presidentfor the coming 12 months.

Mary Ann's election came following a decision by long-serving and hard working president Kaye Clack to stepdown after more than five years in the top job. DaphneMcMillan was re-elected as vice president, Lisa Williamscontinued as secretary and Vicki McLean steppedforward to fill the important role of treasurer.

President Mary Ann said members enjoyed a successfulyear of fundraising with the continued support of the

community. This year our members have held the annual Morning Tea

at McMaugh Gardens and the week-long street stall, as well asa Fashion Parade with high tea in the middle,

Mary Ann said. Each event was wonderfully supported bythe Uralla community as usual and we raised money to

continue supporting people in our community with cancer.

The final fund raising event of year will be a charity familygolf day at Uralla Golf Course from 9.30am this Sunday.

The cost of entry will include 18-holes of golf, prizesand a barbecue lunch followed by home made slices, coffee and tea. Registrations can be made at the golf club.

Grevillea LuteaGrevilleas are popular garden subjects and because there are many

varieties there is one for every horticultural situation.

This time we are featuring Grevillea Lutea. This medium-sizedshrub has dark green, prickly foliage. The flowers are a striking feature.

They are held in large clusters, about five centimetres across, deep creamand carried for many months. Buds are tinged with green. Honeyeatersflock to the nectar-rich flowers.

Grevillea Lutea has proved to be hardy and free flowering in localgardens. Plants have low waterrequirements once established. The onlymaintenance required is an occasionallight pruning to keep plants bushy and

    blooming bounteously.

This variety is a cultivar of the wellknown Rosemary Grevillea andpropagates readily from cuttings.

Spider Flower is one of the commonnames for the grevilleas. The photoillustrates the suitability of this name.

Koala food plantingMembers of the Uralla and Armidale community joined Fields Native Nursery, Southern New

England Landcare and Uralla Shire Council to plant native trees and shrubs along Rocky Creek onFriday 28th September. It was all part of the Woodlands Week celebrations, now in their secondyear in the region. The initiative will provide habitat and extra food resources for koalas, particularly those in care with our local Wires branch.

Sixty eucalypts (apple box, red gum, yellow box and white gum) and eighty lomandra and Ti-trees are a great addition to an earlier planting of several hundred bottle brushes. Steve Field andhis team will continue to plant the site and make sure the trees are watered and healthy beforesummer sets in.

With good conditions, the trees will be mature enough within a few years to provide leaves forthe local koala population. Finding enough eucalypt leaves to feed rescued animals is an ongoing

challenge for Wires carer Denise Friedman, who was on hand to answer questions about koalas.Just like people, koalas have preferences for different types of food and red gums are theirabsolute favourite. This planting will make it easier to feed koalas in care in the future.

Denise asks that any locals whoplan to prune their eucalypt treesdonate the leaves to Wires.Eucalyptus nicholii [Narrow-leavedpeppermint] is a special treat for thekoalas as it is so difficult to find inthe bush but is available aroundUralla Denise can be contacted atWires Uralla on 6778 4994.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!Winter is over and we find ourselves enjoying the warm days

of spring. With the longer days of day-light saving it is apleasure to be outside in the garden or enjoying a barbie withfriends. But with the warmer weather there is also an increasein spider numbers because they are more active in spring andsummer.

Of course, the best solution to this problem is to have atechnician spray your residence early in the spring season forprotection right throughout the whole year.

Along with spraying, here are some other suggestions to help

protect you and your family against spider bites. Wear gloves and suitable footwear when gardening

Dont leave toys or clothes on the ground overnight asspiders like to hide in them

Always check outdoor shoes and boots for spiders beforeputting them on

Check under outside garden settings for spider nests

Be particularly aware of redbacks and white tail spiders asbites from these spiders are both painful and tox ic. Thesespiders are very common in the New England area. Redbackscan be found inrubbish, underhouses, sheds and

guttering. Whitetail spiders can befound under barkof trees and ofteninside bathrooms.

But mostimportantly, bepro-active inprotecting yourfamily againstspiders by havingyour residencesprayed in earlyspring.
