Local council election results are in and we heartily welcome the following folk as our new councillors.

Ward A• Bob Crouch• Michael Pearce• Mark Dusting

Ward B• Kevin Ward• Fred Geldof• Daphne Field

Ward C• Isabel Strutt• Leanne Cooper• Karen Dusting

Looking at the detail in the numbers, it was a close race in all wards. Every councillor can now stand, secure in the knowledge that they have won a good contest for their position on council.

The results themselves were very close, especially for the Dusting family. Mark Dusting pipped John Farrell at the post with preferences to get in by 3 votes in ward A, even though John had 27 more primary votes

In Ward C, Hazel Rohde had 10 more primary votes but missed out by 2 as Karen Dusting had the higher preference vote numbers

Former Mayors, Isabel Strutt & Kevin Ward both are back with very decisive wins in their respective wards. Recounts are likely, so the results may be not final.

It would appear that we have created some interest in this paper, The Uralla Post, from other local publishers.

Wednesday 12th September saw a front page mention of the ‘Uralla Times’ with a nearly full page spread in the Armidale Express.

In the past ‘Uralla Times’ was the newspaper of Uralla. So the story goes, Ruralpress/Fairfax bought the Uralla Times and ran inserts in the Armidale Express. This faded out over the years to no coverage at all for Uralla.

Fairfax let the name ‘Uralla Times’ lapse and the registered business name

‘Uralla Times’ is now owned by a local partnership, not Fairfax. I wonder if they will send Fairfax an invoice for using their registered business name?

Also last week we saw a return to print of the ‘Wordsworth’, in the same format as this paper except in full colour.

Amazing how a new paper stirs up action from previous publishers. Had these papers been in print and regularly available then there would have been no need for The Uralla Post.

The positive feedback and support from the community has been tremendous. Thank you one and all.

Richard Torbay welcomed an announcement today that $34,000 has been allocated to the feasibility study on the Emu Crossing Bridge at Bundarra.

The funding matches a commitment by the Uralla Shire Council to meet half the cost of the study – the first step in planning a flood-proof crossing.

"This is welcome news and a great first step in securing

weatherproof access on this much-used regional road," Mr Torbay said. "The feasibility study is an essential step in Council's planning and I commend the commitment by Council as well as the efforts of the Emu Bridge Committee and its chairman Bob Crouch."

Newly elected member of council, Mr Bob Crouch, said his group is grateful for the Minister's support and interest.

Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay said today he opposed the NSW Government's plans to cut education funding calling that special consideration be given to service provision in rural and regional areas.

While acknowledging the severe budgetary constraints that have promoted the government to take this action, Mr Torbay said the one-size-fits-all approach unfairly impacts on country schools.

"The impacts to education will be greater in rural areas than others due to issues such as distance, population spread and staff retention," Mr Torbay said.  "I met with the Minister yesterday afternoon and asked for a guarantee that there will be strong and continued office presence based in Armidale for the New England education district.

"I am also concerned about the significant fee increases proposed for TAFE colleges, especially when successive governments at all levels

have consistently complained about skills shortages in rural areas.

"This policy of increased charges for TAFE courses only serves to reduce the access required to boost skills."

Mr Torbay suggests that rural and regional areas should be quarantined from these cuts as the negative impacts will be greater.

"We should be investing in education across the whole sector, not cutting funds and reducing opportunities."

Become a ‘Friend’Friends of McMaugh Gardens came into existence on

the 23rd October, 2000 and evolved from the former fundraising group, the Ladies Auxiliary which had raised funds for the previous ten years.

All funds raised are used to buy equipment aimed at enhancing the lives of the residents of McMaugh Gardens Aged Care Centre and the past and present managers have always consulted widely with staff to ensure that money is wisely spent.

They have raised almost $99000 in the past twelve years. Friends are very grateful to the Uralla business houses and the wider community for their ongoing support.

New members and fresh ideas are always welcome. Become a ‘Friend’, you will be made to feel at home.

Our next meetings will be the AGM followed by the October meeting, on Monday, 8th October, 2012 at the meeting room at McMaugh Gardens at 2.00 pm.

For further details contact our Convenor, Marj Gream on 6778 4815 or Maureen Watson on 6778 7262

Acacia buxifolia, the Box-leaf Wattle, usually grows into a small shrub reaching a height of 1.5 metres. The foliage is green although there is a form with attractive blue-green foliage. Flowers are carried in golden yellow clusters. During spring these cheerful flowers cover the plants.

After the flowers fade cut off each branch behind the spent blooms. This will keep plants bushy and blooming bounteously. This pruning system could be applied to all wattles. The Box-leaf Wattle is small enough to be accommodated in most gardens and could be grown as an eye-catching foreground plant in garden beds.Acacia buxifolia occurs in all eastern mainland states and, in our area it grows along the Long Point Road near Hillgrove.

What is Acacia buxifolia?

Market goers bought goodies such as homemade jams and relishes, vegies and meat, beautiful hats, alpacas products, plants, sand candles, soaps, patchwork, goats milk products, just to name a few.

A busy weekend for St John’s Anglican church The local congregation welcomed the new Bishop to

on the Sunday morning, following the local council election on the Saturday.

Many parishioners from the ‘satellite’ churches were all in attendance for the visit from the Bishop on Sunday. It’s always good to have a church full. The day finished off in a more casual setting with the Bishop having lunch with everyone after the service.

Hundreds came to vote at the church hall and partake of a sausage or steak sandwich and meet some of our now elected councillors on the Saturday.

Words and pics by Barry BlairAbly chaired by past president, Lynn McClenahan,

attendees at last Monday’s Rotary Club of Uralla meeting had a great feeling about the whole evening.

The well-attended partners’ evening was packed with highlighted events, including musical items sung by Bronte Bourke and accompanied by guitarist, Uralla Central School music teacher, Malcolm Boyd.

Vying for a trans-Tasman spot in New Zealand, aspirants for the exchange opportunity, Jessica Lashlie, Tiarne Smith, and Shania Hourigan sent a clear message to those present as to why they should go.

Budding public speaker, Zoe Skewes captured everyone’s attention with her subject, ‘truth’ and how it impacts on everybody.

Awards, in the form of framed presentation certificates, for their behind-the-scenes-contribution to Australian Rotary Health were presented by Peter Phillips to Linda Bell, Wendy Marsden, Louise Lashlie, and Helen Phillips.

New member Cath Geldof was inducted by Assistant Governor Vicki Kembery. Addressing the club, Cath paid tribute to both Lynn McClenahan and Peter Phillips for mentoring her. Cath is keen to get a garden beautification project going on the embankment of Uralla railway station.

When Lynn McClenahan began to talk about Paul Harris and in particular the award of a Paul Harris Fellow, immediately ears pricked with heads up, and the silent question,”Who could it be?”

And, the winner is … Michael Batt!Following a round of applause, PHF Michael said he

didn’t have any idea about the award. “I will value the award highly”, he said. Thanking

everyone, Michael said that his dad was a Paul Harris Fellow.

Michael concluded the meeting with a Michael Minute and reminded members of a Rotary Recharge Ride in November which is primarily a battery muster.

Capturing a glow of the slowly-dimming limelight, birthday boy Robert Bell was presented with a birthday cake to mark the occasion.

Uralla Netball on Top Again

Another great season of netball for Uralla has concluded in success again this year. Uralla teams made the finals in six grades this season. There were nail biting games throughout the finals with several games going into extra time. After the first round of finals, there were four teams left and of those, two teams progressed to the grand final held last Saturday.

In division 8, The Kitty Cats put in an awe inspiring effort. After playing a good part of the season one player down, they headed into the grand final the same way with just six players on court, one of which had been sick all week and was still not feeling well. The girls dug deep and put on an incredible display coming away with a 28 – 21 win over the Duvalettes. Well done to Bronte, Bek, Rose, Jacqui, Chloe and Isobelle.

In Division 6, The Wild Ones came out firing. After being defeated by O’Connor the previous week in extra time, the girls had to face the same team in the grand final. The girls played some fantastic netball, powering ahead in the first three quarters. The final quarter was nerve-wracking, as the girls lost their momentum a little, but with a good lead going in, they were able to maintain their lead and come away victors 22 – 17.

Well done Sarah, Courtney, Amy, Tiarne, Tia, Jade, Codee and Jess. This is the 3rd year running the Wild Ones have won their grand final.A big thank you also to all the supporters who came along to help the girls, donning

orange and black in all forms from streamers, hair ribbons, posters clothing, hairspray and face paint, cheering loud and enthusiastically creating a fantastic atmosphere.

We have an amazing amount of talent in our fabulous town. Well Done to all the girls that participated this year.

If you would like to get involved in this exciting and growing sport in Uralla, get in touch with Louise Lashlie for further information. The more the merrier, and lets show the rest of the region how great our town is.The Kitty Cats

The Uralla Tigers under 16's played the major semi final against Glen Innes magpies on Sunday the 2 September 2011 at Bingara. The match started in unusual circumstances. Jordan press kicked off to start proceedings deep into the left hand corner. The winger jumped into the air to catch the ball, landing on the ground and dislocating his knee. The game had to wait twenty minutes to resume after the ambulance took the injured player to hospital.

The forwards battled well in the middle trying to gain field position for the backs to work with, but this was proving a real battle for both teams. The half time score was in Glenn Innes favor 4 - nil.

The second half started with the forwards trying to gain some momentum. Uralla cracked first with a dropped ball at their own end. Glen

Innes scored and made it 8 - nil. A decision that left the crowd scratching their head saw Glen Innes with a scrum feed in Uralla half, they scored again making it 12 nil. Uralla pushed on and Sam Press scored wide out for Jordan Press to convert making the score 12-6.

Uralla managed to knock the ball out in the next tackle and as the hooter sounded after the play the ball, they where tackled just short of the line. They went down 16-10 in a very tight contest.

Front rowers Marcus Doran and Shannon (Keithy) Sterling along with  hooker Jack (Melon) Doran were the best in the forwards. Jack Witton at fullback and Sam Press in the centres played strong and the halves Jordan Press and Bevan Wood led the team around well. Uralla played well but get a second chance to make the grand final.
