It is certainly impossible to survey all the wonderful accomplishments of the AFC in 2012 in the space of this small

President’s message. This edition of Current cannot even highlight all the people and events that have characterized this year. But, I do want to express my thanks for the special work that has taken place and share the sense of excitement that I have for the future of this organization. In my State of the Association address at Convention, I attempted to highlight many of the events that were planned and undertaken by our Association. Kudos to our wonderful AFC staff for their devoted service to the membership, to our Board of Directors, commission and region volunteers, and to all the individual chapter members who have worked tirelessly this year to bring the AFC to every corner of Florida! I know that I have never been a member of an association that had this many activities and had the broad scope of contact that the AFC enjoys. Convention 2012 was a great

success! Over 500 folks gathered for a celebration of the AFC as the 2012 Association of the Year as judged by the Tallahassee Association of Association Executives. We heard speeches by our incoming officers, danced

at the social, attended over 50 professional development sessions, visited with our generous vendors, spent money at the Foundation Auction, and conducted the business of the Association. We also recognized the fine work of chapters, regions, and commissions, as well as many outstanding individual members. We revamped our Association Bylaws at Convention. changes to our dues structure as well, leaving those at the initial level of membership unchanged and enacting slight increases in dues for some members. As we approach the end of 2012, I am eager to imagine what 2013 will hold. I will be continuing on as immediate past president for the coming year, but do so only to support the work of our incoming President for 2013, Mr. Byron Todd. Byron will bring steady and forceful leadership to the work ahead. Great changes are in the future for our colleges and the Florida College System. New theories and practices may challenge how we see ourselves and how we work to educate students in coming years. And the AFC is going to have to place itself in a position to continue to support our colleges. We have no other reason to exist. We are not a union or a partisan organization which needs to busy itself with the controversies that are sure to arise. Our role as the AFC is to discern the will of our members, which includes college presidents, trustees, and faculty and staff throughout the state, and act as a voice for the united strength of our system. If we remain true to that mission, we will continue to be strong and serve our ultimate purpose as the Association of Florida Colleges. Families have many ways of marking the end of the year and the onset of a new year. When I grew up in Virginia, we always had black-eyed peas and ham hocks to ensure good luck in the coming year. Whatever your practices may include for celebrating the holidays and the new year, let me send along my hopes for a blessed, peaceful, and productive one. Thanks for all the support you have provided to me in 2012!

• Igetalotofattaboysandpats-on-the-back for pulling off a good convention, but it’s really the AFC staff that carries the water. I do try to lay out a vision for the general direction of the program, but without them, it would never happen as good as it does.

• Despitethepoliticaldifferences of opinion we all may hold, having the Governor show up at your convention, twice, can never be a bad thing.

• It’sabitsadformetoseeEvelyn Ward roll out of leadership of the AFC. She has been there since day one in my tenure and I will miss her wry perspective, sardonic wit, and knowledge and wisdom about the Association.

• AnyonewhosaystheAFCis “not for faculty” isn’t paying attention. Three of our four recent Association presidents are from the faculty-side of the house. Over the past 20 years, at least half were former or current faculty.

I wish each and every AFC member and their families a safe and Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas, Joyous Kawanza, or Happy Holidays.

How long have you worked at Tallahassee Community College? I have worked at Tallahassee Community College for 17 years.

What is your current title? My current title is Associate Professor.

How long have you been a member of the AFC? I have been a member of the AFC for 17 years. I joined the association the first day that I started working at the college.

What is your favorite quote? “Where there is no vision there is no hope.”

What is the last book you read? The last book that I read is Race for Relevance by Harrison Coerver and Mary Byers.

What do you like to do in your free time? I like to watch sports in my free time.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet? If I could meet anyone it would be Jackie Robinson. I think that he is an amazing man to endure what he did to change the face of baseball.

If you had to leave town in a hurry, knowing you would not be able toreturn, what five things would you take with you? If I had to leave Tallahassee and not return I would want to take with me of course my wife Ann, my dog Blazer, my pictures, my computer, and my trombone.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I would like to learn how to ski.

If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be?It would be 40.

In the month of September we had our Stevi B’s restaurant fundraiser during the lunch time hours. The Ocala campus had $440 in total sales giving us $66 for our fundraising account. Our guest speaker for the September general meeting was Dr. MaryEtta Fisher from the League of Women Voters. Dr. Fisher spoke to us about the 11 amendment changes being proposed on the ballot on Tuesday, November 6. Once again we held our annual boo bag sales and sold a total of 405 bags at $1 each. October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Dr. Myrick from Ocala Oncology Center in Ocala came and spoke at the general meeting. He gave the group useful information regarding breast cancer and early detection tips for prevention. In the month of October the AFC took collections for the Marion County Humane Society and collected various items such as dog/cat food, towels, cleaning supplies, animal beds, and various other items. We also asked for donations for the AFC Community Service

NORTHWEST FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE

Project, Ready for Life Pinellas, and collected a wide range of items from kitchen items, bedding, school supplies, hair products, and laundry items. Thursday, November 8th we held our Fall Harvest Luncheon in the Klein Center and there were 78 people in attendance. The AFC also worked with the Ocala faculty and staff in their collection efforts for Operation Backpacks for Interfaith in Ocala.

Former NWFSC AFC Chapter President, highly active AFC member, and college retiree Gwen Street was on hand at the October 11, 2012 General Membership Meeting so that our chapter could recognize her contributions to the AFC and to NWFSC by endowing the Gwen Street Scholarship. Not only did she graciously pose for a picture when presenting the chapter’s check to the NWFSC Foundation, Ms. Street insisted on providing deserts for the meeting in celebration for the new scholarship. During the meeting we gave an update about our team participating in the October 13th Ronald McDonald House Fire Truck Pull fundraiser and our accompanying donation to the House and our chapter’s participation in the START! Heart Walk event and donation to the American Heart Association. We also recognized this year’s officers with a swearing in ceremony – thank you Kristen Last, President; Bree Durham, Vice President; James Adams, Treasurer; Maddalena Ostrowski, Secretary; James Suderman, Legislative Liaison; April Leake, Historian & Social Media for your willingness to serve! The Chapter sponsored a team made up of NWFSC Law Enforcement Basic Recruit students to participate in the Pensacola Ronald McDonald

House’s Fire Truck Pull fundraiser. NWFSC AFC’s team took first place in the Education/Philanthropy division – winning by a scant .03 of a minute! Five NWFSC AFC members were able to attend the 63rd AFC Convention in Palm Harbor. At convention the NWFSC AFC was honored with the Platinum Level in the Chapter of the Year award competition. Kristen Last was recognized as the Region 1 NWFSC Unsung Hero as well as winning the CPEC Pat Barriteau Unsung Hero award. Ms. Last was also recognized at the Awards Luncheon for being the Region I Director Elect. Upcoming events include an art project social and many, many basketball concessions sales opportunities.

PRESIDENT STEPHENS TO RETIRE FROM SOUTH FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE

After 10 years of guiding the college through institutional growth and transformation, South Florida State College (SFSC) president Dr. Norman L. Stephens Jr. announced that he will retire from the college’s top post effective June 30, 2013. “The decision to retire was made with considerable difficulty and not without second and third thoughts,” Dr. Stephens said. “After 45 years in the community college world, I’m ready to join my wife Laurie in a new phase of our lives in active retirement.” The South Florida State College District Board of Trustees recently honored Dr. Stephens by renaming the building that houses most of the college’s allied health and science programs. That building is now known as the Dr. Norman L. Stephens Jr. Health and Science Education Center. Dr. Stephens, whose background is in the natural sciences, was personally involved in planning and developing this building. At its Oct. 24 meeting, the South Florida State College District Board of Trustees hired Dr. Jeff Hockaday of Sanford, N.C., as a consultant to guide the search for SFSC’s next president. Dr. Hockaday has completed more than 75 searches for community college presidents across the United States, 15 of which have been within the Florida College System. He assisted SFSC (formerly South Florida Community College) in its 2002 presidential search that resulted in the college hiring Dr. Norm Stephens. The search process is expected to take approximately six months. Since coming to SFSC on Sept. 3, 2002, Dr. Stephens has championed numerous changes for the college. This fall term, the college began offering a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Supervision and Management, which has laid the groundwork for future bachelor’s degrees in nursing and elementary education. During Dr. Stephens’ tenure the college saw the addition of programs in radiography, dental hygiene, paramedic certification, practical nursing at the Hardee Campus, among others. Under Dr. Stephens’ leadership, SFSC has fostered an institution-wide culture of data-informed decision making and continuous improvement. During its 2011 reaffirmation of accreditation, the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges

(SACS) visitation team had no recommendations for the college. The SACS visitation team also cited the college’s development of a quality enhancement topic as an educational best practice. SFSC was among 120 out of 1,200 community colleges across the United States to be nominated for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, not just once but two years in a row. In partnership with the Highlands County School District, the Career Academy at SFSC was instituted. SFSC serves Highlands, Hardee, and DeSoto counties and is a member of the Florida College System. INDIAN RIvER STATE COLLEGE Luncheons. On September 20, Mary Pelletier, Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene, presented “F in Oral Health for Florida” at the Fort Pierce campus. She presented information on how St. Lucie County’s Oral Health Coalition has been responding to the recent grade from National Oral Health Report Card. On October 11, Maggy Hurcalla, former Martin County Commissioner, presented “What’s Going on with Everglades Restoration?” at the Chastain campus in Stuart. Fundraisers. Throughout August and into September, the chapter promoted fundraising for the annual Dancing with the Celebrity Stars event held on September 8 in Port St. Lucie. Over $10,000 was raised to support chapter member Veronica Tempone, Associate Professor of English, Communication and Modern Languages, in her debut tango dance. Money went local charities Maya Matters and the Port St. Lucie Police Athletic League and $1500 was raised for IRSC student scholarships. In early October the chapter also purchased the IRSC AFC Chapter shirts as part of a fall fundraiser. Community Service. The IRSC AFC Chapter members participated in various SafeSpace Walk a Mile in Her Shoes events held in October. Events were held in Stuart (Oct 6), Port St. Lucie (Oct 13), and Vero Beach (Oct 27). The Chapter also collected items for Ready for Life Pinellas in support of the AFC’s convention service project. The chapter continues to send coupons – over $40,000 worth to date – to troops, at home and abroad, to help curtail living expenses in a project is called Troopons: Coupons for Troops. Civic Engagement. On Constitution Day, September 17, the chapter sponsored a Voter Registration Drive held at The River Shop Bookstore on IRSC’s main campus. The St. Lucie County’s Supervisor of Elections was on hand to register new voters and update voters’ information. Chapter members also faced off against students in a Constitution Jeopardy.

PALM BEACH STATE AWARDS $4,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS The Palm Beach State College Chapter of the AFC has awarded eight scholarships totaling $4,000 to help students fund their education at the College. Each recipient will receive $500 for the 2012-2013 academic year. The scholarships are open to AFC chapter members and their immediate families. This year’s scholarships will bring the total awarded since 2003 to nearly $24,000.

COMMISSION NEWSOCCUPATIONAL AND WORKFORCE EDUCATION The Florida Advanced Technological Education (FLATE) Center, a National Science Foundation (NSF) regional center of excellence at Hillsborough Community College (HCC) in Brandon announced on Oct. 1, 2012, the award of an unprecedented third round of NSF center-level funding. The FLATE designed and crafted A.S. Engineering Technology (ET) degree program is a model credential-based articulated pathway for advanced manufacturing that was implemented by the Florida Department of Education in 2008. The steady growth in the number of colleges adopting the degree, as well as colleges partnering with FLATE to create an education system in Florida to meet industry needs is a key element in the growth of ET enrollment; fourteen of Florida’s 28 colleges now offer the program. This effort exemplifies the creation of a community of practice among colleges, manufacturers, economic development organizations, Workforce Florida, and the Florida Department of Education. Collectively, this effort has produced a first-in-the-nation, statewide-articulated A.S. Engineering Technology Degree program that also recognizes a national workforce credential as a substitute for 15 hours of program course credit. www.fl-ate.org

DR. HEATHER J. BELMONT SELECTED AS vISION AND CHANGE LEADERSHIP FELLOW AFC’s member, Dr. Heather J. Belmont, Dean of the School of Science at Miami Dade College, has been selected to serve as a Vision and Change Leadership Fellow. Dr. Belmont is now part of a team of forty Leadership Fellows who were competitively selected from an application pool of over 250. The Leadership Fellows team is embarking on a year-long initiative integral to the goals of the Partnership for Undergraduate Life Sciences Education (PULSE). Bobbi Moran:

With near perfect attendance for the more than 25 years at AFC Annual Conventions (only missing one due to illness) Bobbi Moran of College of Central Florida has always been a dedicated member. In

2001, she was given Honorary Life Member status and has continued to be active and involved. Moran has held many AFC Committee and Chapter officer positions and chairs the Credentials Committee. This Committee is responsible for verifying the Convention attendees report and for ensuring the credentials of all voting delegates at the Annual Convention. From a First-Timer:

This was my first state event representing Pensacola State College at the AFC Convention. I was able to meet others that do

my job in other parts of the state and we have already been communicating and sharing best practices. I was also able to spend informal time with other staff members from PSC and build those relationships. I learned more about the AFC Certified College Professional Program that I want to pursue for my own professional development. Evelyn Ward gave us some valuable leadership perceptions in the workshop she lead as part of her participation in the CCP Program. I attended several educational sessions to learn more about on-line support offered through the AFC. The new website training conducted by Adrienne Bryant gave me the opportunity to see some of the new “bells and whistles” that are in the process of being implemented

at www.myafchome.org. By attending the Social Media workshop I learned a few more steps in the process of using this tool more effectively. In fact after this class, I was able to send several “tweets” during the convention, as I practiced what Josh Murdock shared with us. The insights from the Florida College System Legislative Issues Session helped me see the bigger picture of the involvement that the AFC has in shaping higher education. I was able to attend the business meeting and vote on issues and candidates, representing Pensacola State College. I visited every vendor represented at the conference and brought back information that I can use to research additional course offerings for my department. I also purchased items from the silent auction to financially support the AFC, as a way to further its mission. As a first time attendee, I felt a part of the organization because the leadership at our local chapter worked toward

preparing me before leaving town along with involving me once we got there. Rob Gregg, our local AFC president organized a breakfast get-together the first morning and an after-dinner social for our local group. Carol Quinn did a great job in organizing the silent auction and I was glad to help in my small way by logging in items for a few hours. As is true in almost anything, you reap the rewards of an organization and experiences usually based on what effort you are willing to put into it. I look forward to learning more about the impact and value of this professional organization, as we all strive to improve communication.

What is the AFC Professional Development Scholarship?

The AFC Professional Development Scholarship is offered by the AFC Foundation to members who can demonstrate an effective professional development plan to advance their knowledge and skills as a college professional. Any AFC member may apply for the scholarship.

How can the scholarship funds be used?

The scholarship funds are provided are to support member participation in any AFC Professional Development Program. These include:• AFCLeadershipConference• AFCMembershipConference• AFCAnnualConvention• AFCCertifiedCollegeProfessional Program• AFCCommissionConference• AFCRegionalConference

Up to 10 scholarships will be awarded annually. Award amounts will range from $300-$500 each. Funds may be used to cover costs of registration or enrollment, travel, and materials to any of the events listed above.
