Dear Parishioners and Friends of the Cathedral, Saint Athanasius was born to Christians parents around AD 296, in the city of Alexandria (Egypt). As a child, he came to the notice of the Patriarch of Alexandria, Saint Alexander, who saw to it that he received an education in Christian doctrine, as well as philosophy, Greek literature, rhetoric, and law. Additionally, Athanasius learned the Scriptures, and was mentored in theology by heroic witnesses who had been ‘confessors’ (these were men and women who were not martyred during the persecution of the Church, but who were tortured or imprisoned because of their steadfast confession of the faith) during the persecution of Emperor Maximian. During his youth, he befriended several desert hermits, including Saint Anthony of the desert. After a period of time spent in the desert with Saint Anthony’s community, Athanasius returned to Alexandria, was ordained a deacon around AD 319, and became secretary to Alexander the Patriarch. Even though the external threat of persecution for one’s belief in Jesus Christ had now disappeared because of Emperor Constantine’s issuance of the Edict of Milan in AD 313, a new threat to the faith began to arise from within the Church. A priest from Alexandria by the name of Arius began to teach that Jesus was not pre-existent or co-eternal with the Father, that he was instead the greatest creature God had ever created, but created none-the-less. Despite strong opposition, the constant Tradition of the Church, and Scriptural evidence to the contrary, Arius’ denial of the divinity of Christ was catching on in various theological and political circles. Initially condemned and deposed by the Patriarch, Arius went into “retirement” where he continued to preach this heresy, gaining more supporters to his way of thinking about Jesus. By AD 325, this issue had become so unsettling and divisive within the Roman Empire that a Council was called at Nicea to settle this once and for all. Athanasius was personally present at the Council, and there, was a strong champion of the divinity of Christ. Arius’ views were condemned and the full divinity of Jesus upheld (consubstantial with the Father). Shortly after the Council of Nicea, Athanasius became the Patriarch of Alexandria. But despite the official condemnation of Arius’ heresy, Athanasius would spend the rest of his life battling this error. Partly because the Emperor relaxed his condemnation of Arius’ and his supporters, due to their machinations, various alliances, and his desire to keep the peace. Athanasius, however, would not budge on this issue, and refused to admit Arius to communion, and as a result, was forced into exile five separate times (spending a total of 17 years in exile), keeping in touch with his flock through letters. In an attempt to discredit him, his detractors falsely accused him of every sort of evil – treason, murder, embezzlement, sacrilege, and practicing black magic. He also endured attacks upon himself and his faithful clergy, as well as assassination attempts, all the while remaining steadfast in his defense of the divinity of Christ. Athanasius died in AD 373, having been a stalwart defender of the true faith in the face of incredible opposition from inside and outside of the Church. The Church today needs men and women with the courage and conviction of Saint Athanasius to stand up for the truth, especially in a world where people equate ‘the way I feel’ as determinate of reality. Athanasius held that if he should wake up tomorrow and find that the whole world had become Arian, then it would be Athanasius against the world. It reminds me a quote by the Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen: “The truth is the truth even if no one believes it, and error is still error, even if everyone believes it.” May Saint Athanasius assist us in standing up for Christ and His Church, no matter the consequences.

Faith Enrichment Opportunities Fift h Sunday of Easter

So what does it really mean to follow Jesus? I believe we are invited to gaze upon the image of the crucifi ed Jesus to soft en our hearts toward all suff ering, to help us see how we ourselves have been “bitten” by hatred and violence, and to know that God’s heart has always been soft ened toward us. In turning our gaze to this divine truth, we gain compassion toward ourselves and all others who suff er. It largely happens on the psychic and unconscious level, but that is exactly where all of our hurts and our will to violence lie. A transformative religion must touch us at this primitive, brainstem level, or it is not transformative at all... Th ose who agree to carry and love what God loves – which is both the good and the bad – and to pay the price for its reconciliation within themselves, these are the followers of Jesus Christ. Th ey are the leaven, the salt, the remnant, the mustard seed that God uses to transform the world. ~Richard Rohr, Daily Meditations

Disagreements abound, but there’s one thing we all agree on: Th e world needs peace. So how do we get it? If we’re going to have peace in the world, we fi rst need peace in our hearts. We need to identify the people, places, and things that bring us peace – and the people, places, and things that do not bring us peace. And from there, we’re able to make decisions that will bring us closer to the tranquility we desire.Go to < http://tinyurl.com/dc-instrument-of-peace >.Time to Pause and Refl ect:• Let us witness to others the profound beauty of life by encountering

say, the new you, the world view that Christ shares in deep silence… becomes more important than our own. Th en God asks us to live that new life in the circumstances of everyday life, contradicted by turmoil, opposition, and anxieties of all kinds.

~Th omas Keating, Open Mind, Open Heart• Prayer is the movement of the heart of a person toward God; a

movement that in a sense is within God – God in the heart sharing its life with God the Creator of all Life. ~Howard Th urman

Stewardship of the Earth Aluminum Recycling - Globally, more 200 billion aluminum cans are produced annually. Th at is 6,700 cans every second - enough to go around the planet every 17 hours. In 2014, 66.5% of the more than 200 billion aluminum cans produced were recycled. Th at totals 133 billion cans. Aluminum can recycling saves 95% of the energy needed to make aluminum from ore. Energy savings alone are enough to light a city the size of Pittsburgh for more than ten years. However, it is estimated that the billions of aluminum cans landfi lled last year had a scrap value of more than almost one billion dollars. Recycling Glass - Glass beverage and food containers can be recycled time & again. Did you know that 90 percent of recycled glass is used to make new containers? Recycling glass reduces air pollution by 14-20% and saves 25-32% more energy than making glass from virgin raw materials. Over a ton of resources is saved for every ton of glass recycled. Most communities now have curbside recycling for clear, green, or brown glass bottles and jars. Rinse them out fi rst! Don’t put the following in your recycling: window glass, drinking glasses, light bulbs, or glass cookware.

Homily

CreedI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

I will fulfill my vows before those who fear the Lord. The lowly shall eat their fill; they who seek the Lord shall praise him: "May your hearts live forever!"All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; all the families of the nations shall bow down before him.To him alone shall bow down all who sleep in the earth; before him shall bend all who go down into the dust. And to him my soul shall live; my descendants shall serve him. Let the coming generation be told of the Lord, that they may proclaim to a people yet to be born the justice he has shown.

O Come, Let us Sing unto the Lord Anthony Piccolo, b. 1953 [Psalm 95:1-7]

O come, let us sing unto the Lord, let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and show ourselves glad in him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are all the corners of the earth, and the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it, and his hands prepared the dry land. O come, let us worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is the Lord our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Glory be to the Father…

O shepherd of Israel, hear us, shine forth from your cherubim throne. O Lord, rouse up your might, O Lord, come to our help.

You brought a vine out of Egypt; to plant it you drove out the nations. Before it you cleared the ground; it took root and spread through the land.

The mountains were covered with its shadow, the cedars of God with its boughs. It stretched out its branches to the sea, to the Great River it stretched out its shoots.

Permanent Diaconate Ordination Congratulations to Matt Lawler, who was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate by Bishop Edward C. Malesic on Saturday, May 1st. May God bless him abundantly as he undertakes his ministry of service to the Church.

Morning Prayer Groups - Please consider joining our weekly gatherings from 6:30-7:00 am in the Lower Sacristy of the Cathedral. Using the scriptures for the coming Sunday, these groups share their faith and some fellowship over a cup of coff ee. Th e women’s group meets on Tuesdays. Th e men’s group resumes weekly Friday meetings on May 7th. Just show up at the Lower Sacristy, or contact the parish offi ce with inquiries.

Baptismal Preparation Classes - All fi rst-time parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation class prior to the Baptism of their fi rst child. Th e Cathedral off ers the class through our parish’s subscription to FORMED, which also includes a great number of other programs and information. Th e access to FORMED is free, if you sign up through the link on our website. Once you have signed up, go to the Reborn class: < https://watch.formed.org/reborn >.

Gluten Allergies and Communion - Th e Cathedral has a supply of minimally glutinous altar breads which have been produced with an improved process that makes them virtually indistinguishable from ordinary Communion wafers. Th ese hosts contain less than 37 micrograms of gluten, and should be safe for members of the congregation who suff er from Celiac disease or other gluten allergies. If you are interested in receiving the low-gluten host for communion, please stop in at the Sacristy prior to Mass and speak to the celebrant. Individuals are advised to consult with their physician before receiving communion in this form.

Holy Hour of Reparation - We may wonder what we can do to help establish justice, bring healing, and purge corruption from the Church. One thing that we can do, is to pray for the Church, and all those aff ected. To

that end, the Cathedral will hold a Holy Hour of Reparation and Healing, from approximately 5:45-6:45 pm, on May 3rd. the First Monday of the month. It will provide an opportunity for prayer before the Blessed Sacrament and conclude with prayers of reparation.

Year of St. Joseph - During this Year of Saint Joseph, the Church has made a plenary indulgence available to all the faithful who satisfy the usual conditions (confession, Eucharist, prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father, a spirit of detachment from sin, and the intention to gain the indulgence for one’s self or someone in purgatory), as well as perform one of the prescribed works, as follows:

• Meditate for at least 30 minutes on the Lord’s Prayer, or take part in a spiritual retreat of at least one day that includes a meditation on St. Joseph

• Following St. Joseph’s example, perform a spiritual or corporal work of mercy

• Recite the Holy Rosary with your family or your fi ancé• Entrust your daily activity to the protection of St. Joseph• Pray through the intercession of St. Joseph that those seeking work

can fi nd dignifying work• Recite the Litany of St. Joseph for Christians who suffer all forms

of persecution• Recite any prayer or act of piety legitimately approved in honor of

St. Joseph, in particular on May 1, on the 19th of any month, and every Wednesday

Th is gift of a plenary indulgence extends particularly to the elderly, the sick, the dying, and all those who, for legitimate reasons, are unable to leave their homes, if, detached from all sin and with the intention of fulfi lling, as soon as possible, the usual conditions, recite an act of piety in honor of St. Joseph, comfort of the sick and patron of a good death, off ering with confi dence to God the pains and trials of their life.
