Nestled into a secluded ridge and looking north over the

glassy waters of Baroon Pocket Reservoir in North Maleny,

Queensland, is a home that enjoys privacy, tranquility and

extraordinary scenery.

Architect Tim Cronin and builder Jaicon Construction have

created a design that emphasises the interplay of interior and

exterior, with robust matrials inspired by the site, and design

solutions that respond to the sub-tropical environment.

Clever features encourage passive cooling throughout.

A panel window acts like a set of bellows to funnel a mountain

breeze above the double timber and stainless main doors.

A 2-metre deep saltwater pool at the centre of the home

provides visual delight and cooling breezes to most rooms.

Banks of louvres in split-level ceilings moderate both light

and airflow.

Dear Fellow Members,

In the last few issues of the Tanglin Times, my

colleagues and I had shared with you some changes

we would like to bring about. These included some

Membership Rule changes and the proposal to set

up a Chinese restaurant.

Since then, we have received feedback from

Members, mostly positive and related to the

Membership issues. At the same time, several

Members lamented that there had been far too many

changes in recent years such that we may run the

risk of ceasing to be a proper Members’ Club. Kindly

allow me to explain and hopefully allay the anxieties

caused by the seemingly numerous changes.

Firstly, I consider it imprudent

to seek change for the sake

of change. Take the Chinese

restaurant for example: The

resolution was proposed and

approved by the Membership at a Special General

Meeting on 30 September 2013. It behoves the

General Committee (GC) to therefore work towards

the realisation of this approved resolution. Anything

done contrary to this will need to be referred back to

the Membership.

Secondly, I think it is the responsibility of the GC

to tackle the topic of Membership issues which,

as I have repeatedly said, is difficult and complex,

but is one we must address rather quickly, yet with

caution and sensitivity. Several attempts had been

made in the past to remedy the problems but these

came to nought. The resolution to seek an increase

in the planned total membership (PTM) is a case

in point.

Thirdly, I deem it the duty

of the GC to effectively

communicate to Members

the significant changes

it intends to undertake

and seek approval as

necessary. The Tanglin

Times, the Club’s

website, Members’

forum/dialogue sessions, and Special General

Meetings are the principal modes of communication

which will be utilised.

At the time of writing this message, the Club is

preparing for a dialogue session

with Members on 27 November

2014. The dialogue will cover

the foregoing two issues on

Membership Rule changes and

the Chinese restaurant. Once we

have articulated your inputs on the proposals put

forward, we will then be convening a Special General

Meeting in the New Year to seek Members’ approval

on the related resolutions.

On a lighter note, as we are approaching the year

end, may I take this opportunity to wish all Members,

management, and staff of the Club the joy and peace

of the season and a Happy New Year.

Fellow Members,

‘Tis the season to be giving. In the month of November,

a charity Opera Recital by the talented classical singer

Ms Tanya Sen was sold out, with almost 200 attendees

packing the event in the Churchill Room on a beautiful

Sunday afternoon at the Club. All proceeds from the event,

of almost $5,000, were donated to Dover Park Hospice.

More coverage about the event is in this issue.

Last month, I introduced the Members’ Communications

team, and talked about the team’s three pillar goals, which

are: 1) Branding, 2) Communications, and 3) Feedback.

Furthermore, I expounded on the Branding pillar. On this

note, I will expound further on the Communications pillar

goal. The Communications pillar goal involves anything

to do with the dissemination of the Club’s events and

notices to more than 8,000 Members (including spouses

and household affiliates). The Club’s traditional avenues

for communication to Members has

always been The Tanglin Times, the

Club’s website, and the notice boards.

We’ve since then expanded the

communications platform to include the

NewsBites service, our Club’s e-mail

platform, which notifies subscribed

Members, in real-time, about the Club’s

weekly events and notice updates.

Subscription to the NewsBites service has its privileges:

Just a few months ago in August, the Club announced, via

NewsBites, that it was giving away eight free tickets, each

worth $98, to see Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between

Man and Horse, at Marina Bay Sands. All eight tickets were

snapped up within one hour of the announcement, on a

first-come-first-served basis. Then again, just last month

in November, the Club announced, via NewsBites, that it

was giving away 10 free tickets, each worth $145 to see

“Japan Theatre!”, a classical Japanese dance-drama, at

Marina Bay Sands. Again, all the tickets were gone within

the hour.

So sign up for NewsBites! You’ll never know what other

freebies the Club will be giving away in the future via the

digital service. Spouse and child Members are welcome

to subscribe as well. In our recent October NewsBites

registration contest, one Member won $288 worth of

Club F&B vouchers by simply registering. For the current

November and December registration contest, participants

stand a chance to win a trip

for two (worth $700) to Turi

Beach Resort in Batam.

If you have any inquiries

on how to register, drop

an e-mail to Habib,

our Senior Marketing

& Communications

Executive, via the following e-mail address:

[email protected].

Another initiative that targets the Communications pillar

goal is the installation of digital screens around the Club.

We’ve recently installed several digital screens around

the Main Clubhouse area, specifically, the Tavern, the

Fireplace, and the area near the Jackpot Room entrance.

This marks the first of several more phases to replace the

traditional paper notice boards. With

the increasing number of events and

announcements happening in the Club,

the reliance on the traditional notice

boards for event posters and notices

is becoming unmanageable. The digital

screens will help the staff do away with

the inefficient drudge of paper poster

management. And for us Members, the

viewing of the events and notices on the digital screens is

simply pleasing to the eyes.

“Tis the season to be jolly!” so goes a traditional Christmas

yuletide, and New Years’ Day carol. To our Members who

celebrate Christmas and the New Year, I wish you good

tidings at Christmas and a Happy New Year!

In closing, I will leave you with the following quote:

“The best use of life is love. The best expression of love is

time. The best time to love is now.” - Rick Warren

Dear Members,

Happy Holidays from all of us at the Club! This month,

we are embracing the festive spirit, and celebrating

Christmas in grand style. We have Christmas cookies,

carollers, holiday meals, and plenty of activities,

promotions, and special events to keep you and your

entire family in the holiday mood. The only thing we’re

missing is snow!

Our Tangles Express Lunch Buffet has proven to be quite

a hit with Members, and this month, we are featuring

an array of festive dishes every Friday. And Saturdays,

you’ll delight in a spread of delicious Indian dishes

created by Chef Joshi and his team. With two featured

days each week this month, and an exceptional price of

just $12.85, there’s no reason not to join us.

For those looking for something a bit more formal,

please join us in the Churchill Room for our Executive

Set Lunch. We will include several of your favourite

holiday desserts on the buffet in December (log cakes,

cookies, and puddings, oh my!), soup,

an assortment of appetisers, salads,

and even your choice of coffee or tea,

priced at only $18.95 or $29 with a

main. This is the perfect setting and

menu to gather friends and family to

celebrate the holidays.

If you’re looking for a glass of holiday cheer, all of

our bars are offering eggnog at $6.80 per glass, and

glühwein at $8.80. We also have a fabulous sticky date

pudding available at the Tavern, and Tea Room, that is

sure to delight you.

Our line-up of dining options on Christmas Eve and

Christmas Day is impressive, and incudes Roasted

Wagyu Sirloin, Oven Roasted Gammon Ham, and

Roasted Tom Turkey. Those who visit the Club on

Christmas Eve and Day will also enjoy the music of

carollers as they perform in the Churchill Room, Tavern,

Fireplace, Tea Room, and Wheelhouse.

If you decide to entertain at home for the holidays, make

it a point to visit our Gingerbread house in the lobby,

where you can pick up delicious holiday fare through

our festive takeaway programme. We have everything

from Gammon Ham ($240) to log cakes ($46), to make

entertaining at home

stress-free and enjoyable.

Much of the joy of

the festive season is

seeing the magical

spirit of the holidays

reflected in the eyes of

children. I encourage

you to bring your

children and grandchildren and join us for our Yummy

Christmas Cookies workshop on 13 December. We also

have our Holly Jolly Christmas Party for children 4–12

years old on 6 December. There’ll be a visit from Santa,

a delicious buffet, and plenty of holiday activities to

keep everyone entertained. Our dedicated Christmas

Storytime at the Library on 13 December is another

activity that is sure to make little ones smile.

Our slate of movies this month includes many classic

and modern Christmas tales including: It’s a Wonderful

Life, White Christmas, and How the

Grinch Stole Christmas. Be sure to

come with the whole family and make

a night of it at the Club.

It’s hard to believe New Year’s Eve

is almost here again, which means

we have our annual ball to look forward to. This year,

the theme is Ball gowns and Tuxedos, and with an

impressive line-up of live entertainment, it promises to

be a fun and festive evening, as we say goodbye to

2014 and welcome another year.

You can refer to the festive kit that you received with your

November magazine, and which is available throughout

the Club, for a full listing of holiday offerings.

From all of us at the Club, we wish you a happy holiday

season, and a joyous New Year. May 2015 be your best

year yet.

Happy holidays!

James joined the Club on 15 April

1998, and is quite the “household

name” here. Numerous complimentary

letters from Members about James’s

courteous manner, and his willingness

to assist in any request show how

valuable he is.

Recently, he went out of his way to

help a Member’s daughter recover a

She’s well-liked by her peers, and

MR SUNNY NG–NEW FACILITIES DIRECTORThe Tanglin Club welcomes Mr Sunny Ng, our newly appointed Facilities Director, and he will be heading the

Maintenance, Housekeeping, and Security departments. Sunny has 20 years of facilities management experience

in delivering optimum uptime and cost effective solutions to facilities including space and infrastructure planning,

installing of maintenance programs, and the disposal or replacement of capital assets. He is also experienced

in developing and delivering new facilities: from factories and offices to a research institute; from planning and

budgeting to managing the tender process and award, and implementation (project management) of sustainable

asset management.

Sunny is also academically qualified, and holds a Master of Science in Facility and Environmental Management

from the University College London (2014), and a Master of Engineering in Management of Technology from

National University of Singapore (2008), amongst other qualifications.

The Excellent Service Award–Star Presentation Ceremony for the

Hospitality Sector took place on 20 October 2014. The annual event

was graced by Mr Heng Chee How, Senior Minister of State, Prime

Minister’s Office.

We are proud to announce that Razali Bin Haron, restaurant manager

for Wheelhouse, and Star Award winner, was recognised at the

presentation ceremony for his efforts in delivering excellent service

and going the extra mile for service.

Besides Razali, the following staff were also awarded the Gold and

Li Chang, Waitress

Salim Amat, Bar and Restaurant Manager

Adnan Abdullah, Senior Restaurant Manager

This recognition has certainly motivated our staff to work harder

towards achieving service excellence at work. We look forward to

having more staff being conferred with this recognition in the future.

A total of four bye-laws were recently amended and approved by the general committee.

Dining and Drinking–Fireplace 10

On a trial basis, the Fireplace is now open at 6pm, instead

of 7pm, on Sunday night and is open for lunch on Sundays

and Public Holidays for families.

The Churchill Room 12(b)

Jeans are now allowed on Saturdays and Sundays in the

Churchill Room.

Gymnasium 18(b)(i)

Children aged 12 to 14 years can now use the gymnasium

at any time on Saturdays, Sundays, and Public Holidays.

In addition, Members may only sign in one guest at a fee

of $20 to use the gymnasium’s facilities, however, this fee

does not include access to group exercise classes.

Dress codes in F&B outlets

A gentle reminder to Members who are bringing their

children and guests to dine at the Club: please refer to Bye

12 on the various dress codes of our F&B outlets, so as to

prevent any inconvenience when you dine.

Guest Car Parking

The Club has 257 parking spaces. A total of 75 slots are

reserved for Guest Parking of which 46 are in the Main

Club and 29 in the Sports Centre. As we endeavour to be of

service to Members, each Member will be given a maximum

subject to space availability.

Members may call Reception or apply personally for the

Guest Parking Pass. We seek your understanding in giving

us one day advance notice to facilitate your requests.

Please note that guests are only allowed to park at the open

deck car park in the Main Club and on the top floor of the

Sports Centre and are required to display the Guest Parking

Pass on the dashboard of their vehicles.

Library Manager Agnes Louis,

whose career in the Club

spanned 30 years, resigned in

October to pursue new interests.

Agnes started work at the Club

in 1984 at a young age, and she

quickly established herself as

a valued employee. Members

who are regulars at the Library

know her very well, and it should not come as a surprise

that some of them say that they’ve known her ever since

they were children, affectionately calling her Auntie Agnes.

Colleagues made lasting friendships with her, and some

have come to call her not only a friend, but also a family

member, and so it is with a heavy heart that we bid her a

fond farewell. We will miss the day-to-day interaction with

her, and we know she will continue to do well professionally

and personally. We wish Agnes all the best, and thank her for

her years of dedication, enthusiasm, and team spirit.

Young Yee started with the

Club as a temporary Accounts

Clerk in 1999 after her A levels.

Along the way, she progressed

to an Accounts Assistant and

eventually Accounts Executive

in 2011.

The Finance & Admin Team

would like to acknowledge the invaluable services that she

has provided the Club for the past 14 years. She was one of

the most sincere, devoted, and hardworking individuals on

the team. It is with regrets that we lose her as part of our

big family.

On behalf of the management, we thank her for all her

dedicated work at the Club and wish her all the best and

success in her future endeavours.

A recipe for SuccessHis shelves are bursting with cookbooks, and his

wall displays a panoply of awards that most can only

aspire to: Culinary World Champions 1998 and third

place in 2002, Oceanafest Overall Champion and

Best Presentation 2011, awards from the Culinary

Olympics, and an array of regional competition wins

and placings.

In addition to that impressive resume that spans

more than three decades, and includes work with

more than 25 Michelin-star chefs, and some of

Singapore’s most prestigious hotels and restaurants,

such as Raffles Hotel, the Fullerton and the Westin.

It’s been an impressive run for Executive Chef

Louis Tay.

Humble beginningsAlthough he’s had a long, successful career, Chef

Louis had a humble start in the culinary world. “I’ve

been a chef since I was 16, so about 32 years. When

I was young, I didn’t like to study. I studied very

little,” he says with an easy laugh. “I left school very

young, at the age of 15. At that time, I went to learn

a skill and around the same time my best friend’s

father opened a restaurant called The Ship. And he

said “Why don’t you join me in the kitchen?” So I said

why not. I joined him when I was 16, and I found that

there were so many things to learn in the kitchen, you

never stop. Everything was new to me.”

The more he was exposed to in the kitchen, the

more his interest in cooking increased. And although

he had no formal education, he had a drive to learn

and a willingness to do whatever was necessary

to succeed.

After his time in the Army, he continued working

at The Ship, but soon told himself he needed hotel

experience. He applied to the Westin to join the

kitchen team, but the Executive Chef told him they

didn’t have a vacancy for a Commis Chef. So Louis,

armed with his determination and resolve, told the

chef, “I don’t mind being a trainee. I just want to join

a big hotel so that I can learn, not just for the position

and rank.” Swayed by what he heard, the chef took

Louis on as a trainee, which eventually blossomed

into other kitchen roles at the hotel, where he stayed

for four and a half years.

12

Page 15: The Tanglin Times: December 2014

After the Westin he worked at Raffles Hotel for more

than eight years where he garnered experience and

skills from a variety of positions in several of the

restaurants and picked up techniques from master

chefs which he still uses today. “I was the first to

come in and the last to leave,” Louis says with a

ready smile. “I would always help the pastry chef

in making sure that everything was okay, especially

getting the desserts ready. Only then, would I

go home.”

His career continued with time at Raffles Town

Club, the Fullerton, and the Merchant Court Hotel.

Each post served to teach him more and refine his

skills; something that Chef Louis feels is a lifetime

pursuit. His desire to become a better chef is evident

when you speak to him, “I’m still learning now,” he

says proudly. “As a chef you always want to touch

your food, taste the sauce, test the chicken, and

be involved.”

the tanglin clubChef Louis’s move to The Tanglin Club came six

years ago. The shift from big hotels to a private

club presented new opportunities. “Because the

Members are with us for years, I can understand

their needs more here in terms of their taste and the

presentation they prefer,” he shares.

And although Members are loyal to their favourite

dishes on the regular menus, Chef Louis finds ways

to incorporate his tastes and techniques in other

ways. “I have the opportunity to showcase my skills

in promotions and featured items,” he says. “For

example, recently, the Tomahawk steak promotion

is selling like hotcakes, so we’re going to extend it

another month until the end of November. We sold

500kg of it in a month! The Members love it.” He

generously adds that he does all of this with the help

of his team, which numbers 60 kitchen staff.

Chef Louis also enjoys the relationships he has

built with Members over the years. “Here you get

feedback directly from the Members, which is good;

it helps our team get stronger,” he says. “I learn so

much from the Members. Sometimes they give you

ideas you’ve never thought of. Some Members share

their recipes with me, and you will never find that in

a hotel. The Members are so sincere. I even had one

Member bring me back a pork pie from Britain, so I

could try it.”

Being the Executive Chef of a club this large is quite

the balancing act. Along with managing Member

feedback and expectations, Louis is responsible for

a team of 60 across seven outlets, which does not

make for much down time. “It’s a challenge,” says

Louis, “but it keeps me going.” His team serves

more than half a million covers a year and to give

you an idea of what that means on monthly basis,

Louis shares that he orders 750kg of oxtail a month

alone! And that’s just for one dish. You can imagine

the scope and complexity of his work.

Striving to WinThroughout his career Chef Louis has been involved

in cooking competitions. He started in 1988, when

he was at the Westin, and his chef, Joe Yap, got

him interested. “It’s a great opportunity to prove

yourself,” Chef Louis says. He competed in smaller,

regional competitions for nearly a decade and then

in 1998 he joined the Singapore National team in the

Culinary World Cup, which happens every four years

in Luxembourg.

The team won—his first international competition!—

besting 33 other teams and came in third place

four years later. In 2006, he decided to take a well-

deserved break, but was back in 2011, a year after

Singapore won again in 2010. This year he’ll serve

as the team’s manager, as they defend their world

championship, a role he’s looking forward to. “I tell

myself this is the last competition I’m going to be

in,” Louis says. “You need to sacrifice a lot to do a

competition in terms of time, family, work.”

continuing EducationThough he has no formal schooling, Chef Louis has

been able to accomplish an astonishing amount in

his decades-long career. “Through my hard work

and the recognition from my chefs who brought

me to the next level, I’ve been able to work my way

up,” says Chef Louis modestly. “But luckily, I got a

diploma last year. I don’t have much education, but

I always said to myself, I must push for something,

to have something I can show to people. So I have

a diploma in F&B hospitality. I had to submit my

work experience to the government and show that I

could do certain skills—food costing, create menus,

develop recipes, everything from your past. There

were several interviews, but I got a diploma from the

government before I was 50,” he proudly chuckles.

As he prepares to enter the next decade of his life,

Chef Louis shows no signs of wanting to slow down.

In fact, his desire to learn and improve and keep

pushing himself has not waned since he was a young

boy of 16 just starting out.

“Because the Members are with us for years, I can understand their needs more here in terms of their taste and

the presentation they prefer.”

SPOOkY SHOCkTOBER

RANGOLI

October was all about colours and culture. To begin with, the young, and the young-at-heart, learned the significance of rangoli. This complimentary one-and-half-hour session saw Members creating a beautiful rangoli design for the family block, whilst enjoying fresh mango lassis, courtesy of Chef Joshi and his team.

Then came an evening of family fun, where a sumptuous dinner buffet spread was prepared, oil lamps lit, and henna drawn. The drizzle did not dampen the merry-making and the Wheelhouse came alive with energetic, acrobatic bhangra dancers, and a snake charmer.

Moving from the festival of lights, we ended October with a scream, literally, as the children came decked out in their best costumes for Tanglin’s Spooky Shocktober Party.

THE GOURMET SECTION’S FIRST NIGHT OUT

Fifteen eager and hungry Members went on their first outing

as the Gourmet Section on 4 November to a restaurant

known for its excellent Japanese cuisine. Yours truly

was among them, and we were not disappointed, as we

had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The food was great,

the ambience perfect, and the company was, of course,

excellent. We all sat down to indulge in a eight-course

meal, starting with Japanese tomatoes, ginko nuts, and

grilled hirame (sometimes known as flat fish).

We went on to feast on more delicacies: maguro (bluefin

tuna) and sea bream, tofu skin and mochi (glutinous rice

cake) with soup, oyster and vegetable tempura, nanban-

style duck breast hot pot, baby sardines and ikura (salmon

roe) rice, and akadashi (red miso soup). We finished

everything off with a truly decadent citrusy yuzu sorbet.

Gourmet Section

We had such a whale of a time that before we ended our

meal we were already planning our next outing, which will

likely be the diverse and multi-cultural cuisine of Russia,

which will be something new for most of us.

If you’re like us, adventurous and eager to try something

beyond your favourite dishes at the Club, then join us!

It was heartening to see a very good turn-out of Members

and their families on a tranquil Sunday afternoon, just to

hear The Tanglin Club Choir sing a medley of compositions

from famed choral music conductor John Rutter. From the

feedback we received, we knew that we did not disappoint

our audience.

We were even more pleased to see our audience not just

lend us their ears, but also their voices, as they joined us

in the singing! It was thrilling for us to perform our songs

in stages; something our past audiences did not get the

chance to hear. I have to admit though, as pleased as I

was, I was a little disappointed that we did not have enough

men to complement the mostly female Choir. A little tenor

and bass would have gone a long way to result in a most

excellent performance.

As I think back to that Sunday, I realised that what our

audience liked the most was the repertoire of songs, and

credit for this must go to our teacher and conductor,

Mr Albert Tay. With this confirmation, the Choir is more

confident in performing more of Rutter’s works, and you

can look forward to hearing more of us in the months ahead.

While we bask in our new found success, I am sure this will

spur the male choral singers amongst our Members to step

forward and join us. Remember, it’s not too late for you

to be part of the Choir! Join us every Wednesday evening

for fun-filled training and socialising. Contact Ms Anqi at

BALUT OCTOBER RECAP

The final round of the Inter-Club games happened in mid-

October, this time hosted by the Singapore Cricket Club

(SCC). There were a few teams in the running for the overall

prize and with a suitably rousing blast the games got

underway. When the dust settled, SCC found that it won the

champion’s prize, and the top overall scorer was also from

SCC. Through many good-humoured shouts of “fix!”, the

worthy champions collected their prize and beamed for the

camera. Lillian Lee kept our Club’s flag flying with her prize

for the highest game score of 155 for the 2014 season. Our

thanks and appreciation to Rajan Menon and Pernod-Ricard

for their continued support of this event, and we look forward

to many more years of their worthy sponsorship.

Our monthly game began with a slap up dinner at the Tavern,

where we managed to sit in a straight line, order a variety of

food, and finish without disgracing ourselves. The decorum

and dignity disappeared as soon as the games started and

the rabble got raucous. After many shouts, baluts galore,

you-know-who making some too, and groaning scratches,

Esther Ling beat off all comers with her total score 629, and

Convenor Sethuraman nabbed the game high with his 135.

November sees us playing the much anticipated Member vs

Staff game. Last year, we walked away dazed and bemused,

and this year we are aiming for just dazed! We will have the

final score of the leader board in the next edition as the final

game is in November. Till then!

Merry Christmas, one and all! The year is coming to a close with

our last few events. The Concorde Trophy tournament has just

been played, and we will report on the results next month.

We have also sent a team up to Malaysia to play a couple of

friendly matches with the Royal Penang Club, and the Royal Ipoh

Club–photos and report to come soon!

Our Annual Christmas Snooker Marathon cum dinner will be held

on Saturday, 6 December 2014. If you haven’t already signed up,

please come and join us! All are welcome.

For the October monthly Section night, the evening yielded two

winners: Mr Davin Liok for the most number of wins, and Mr Ashok

Arya for the highest break! Congratulations to the winners.

Thank you, everyone, for your support through the year, and have

a fantastic close to 2014, and a Happy New Year!

BRIDGE DIWALI TEA

Diwali is certainly the biggest and brightest of all Hindu

festivals. It marks four days of celebration amongst the

Indians.

Members and guests who streamed into a tastefully

decorated Raffles Room with clay oil lamps, electric lights,

marigolds, and jasmine, were each greeted with a bindi to

stick to their foreheads.

The ladies were decked out in an array of elegant sarees,

ghagra cholis, kameez, and kurtas. It was a striking, colourful

spectacle that delightfully enhanced the festive mood.

An Indian tea of samosas, curry chick peas, tikka chicken,

and mee goreng amongst several other delicacies, was

tastefully laid out.

Bridge was played to the Mitchell movement and the winners

of the sections were:

North/South

1. Rohini Arya and Anu Sehgal

2. Anjna Beri and Lata Iyer

3. Shyamala Kanagasundrum and Marlese Mallal

East/West

1. Tay Lian Pheck and Sim Sock Yan

2. Esther Ling and Kavita Butalia

3. Neeta Chowdhry and Abha Das

Besides the winning prizes, there were surprise gifts for

players whose bidding boxes had stickers behind them.

What a pleasant afternoon, and thanks to Deepa Gupta for

arranging the tea with the F&B Department, to Arziz Kamsani,

and all who contributed to make the event so delightful.

2ND ANNUAL INDOOR CYCLING CHALLENGE 2014

11 OCTOBER

50,000m and 102 minutes later, and we have a winner: Sarah

Best clocked the best time and emerged champion! This is

her second win for a gym event for the year, following the

Indoor Triathlon earlier this year in May.

This year’s 50km spinning race was different from last year.

The participants, made up of ten ladies and seven men, were

required to simulate a terrain ride, with their pace kept at

a cap – at stipulated distances over the entire race, and at

certain distances. The particpants had to cover the entire

required mileage without seating! The finale was a 5km sprint

to the finish, where we saw all our 17 participants give their

100% (or what was left in their tanks) to break ahead of the

pack, or catch up. The gist of this race was consistency,

endurance, and speed. The winner from the men’s category

was Paul Healy. His regular spinning lessons in our monthly

Group Fitness classes paid off. He clocked a time of 1 hour,

43 minutes, and 19 seconds, which he claimed he was rather

surprised with. Top three results shown on the left.

Overall, all our participants did exceptionally well despite the

different challenges thrown at them. We, the Gym Team, look

forward to seeing you participate in next year’s event!

ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP–REVISITED!

Following our first attempt to hold this year’s Annual

Championship in September being suspended due to rain,

the event was rescheduled to early November at Jurong

Country Club. This time round the rain gods were smiling

on us and all 40 golfers managed to complete their rounds

between light rain before the start and a heavy downpour

just after we finished. The course at Jurong was in very

nice condition and the game was enjoyed by all regardless

of good or bad golf played. Jurong again provided a nice

dinner after the game.

The overall net winner and this year’s Club Champion was

Nancy Miller in a tightly fought contest. Playing to a course

handicap of 23, Nancy’s net score was 67, closely pipping

Scott Thomas (13) on 68 and Alex Eow (19) on 69. Tan Kai

Seng, Chris Steffens, Tee Fong Seng and Adrain Tan were

joint fourth on 71. The best round of the day came from

Justin Heah Siew Poh with a gross score of 79 including an

eagle at the par five 18th hole. Justin therefore won the Best

Gross Trophy. Justin’s eagle narrowly edged out Sanjay

Anand on 80 and Scott Thomas on 81.

Our next game is the Christmas Bash, a morning game at

SINGAPORE NATIONAL FOURS

The Ladies’ tournament was hosted on a gloriously sunny day

at the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) on Sunday, 2 November,

by Bowls Singapore. The Tanglin Club had a very committed

team, and played our first match against Singapore Power,

the tournament winners, and narrowly lost 18/20! Our finals

against Singtel was very tough and despite a spirited display

from all of us, we came in third. Our congratulations to The

Tanglin Club team; Devi, Peck Tee, Annette, and Nicky. A

great effort!

The Men’s competition was also hard fought over two

weekends and after winning all games in the preliminary

rounds, the finals were once again elusive and the team of

Rodger, Bernard, Ted, and Denis had to settle for second

place to our traditional rivals from SCC. Congratulations

to our Club’s team and our thanks to SCC for hosting this

prestigious national event at the Padang again this year.

32ND ANNUAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP

We just had our 32nd Annual Swimming Championship on

Saturday, 8 November. This meet is one of the highlights in

the Club’s swimming calendar.

The meet kicked off with the Individual Medley event at

2pm. The Individual Medley is an event where swimmers

have to swim the four competitive strokes. It requires sound

technique and endurance.

We had a great turn out and saw many young swimmers

taking the starting blocks for the first time. Our Club’s current

swimming community is steadily growing and we have many

young swimmers who have the potential of becoming the

next swimming star.

The final event of the championship was the most popular

parent-and-child relay. Mums and dads teamed up with

their child and competed in the event. We certainly had an

exciting and fun-filled afternoon!

TOUR TO PENANG

A motley crew of Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) and The

Tanglin Club (TTC) Members arrived in Penang on 24 October

for two matches against the Penang Club and the Penang

Sports Club. It was a disappointing turn-out given two clubs

combined, especially given the efforts our hosts had made to

make us so very welcome.

Penang Club, established in 1868, was our first venue.

Located right on the seafront with its own beach, it’s an

excellent place for sundowners, and a delightful place for

breakfast–they even serve pork bacon! Some of us stayed

here and others at the Evergreen Laurel Hotel on the famed

Gurney Drive.

Our match on Friday was eight strings, but some had

to play twice due to the late arrival from Singapore of

Thomas Bouvagnet and Gaurav Yadav (TTC)–who missed

his flight and couldn’t get back the next day. Terry Scott

(SCC), nursing a sore knee, had two matches–winning the

second and narrowly losing the first. Ashley Nicholas (SCC)

prevailed in both of his, as did Graham Hunter and Peter

“Porky” Rogers (TTC). The highlight of the evening was the

match played by young James Nicholas, aged 10, against his

wily opponent, Francis, who was 73. It was well fought, with

James unfortunately losing to 63 years of experience 2-1.

Our hosts, thanks to Dato Lim, put on a big spread for dinner.

A late evening was had in the Men’s Bar, where the bottom

of many bottles was witnessed.

Penang Sports Club, established in 1947, was our second

venue. It has nine grass and eight artificial surface courts–

the site is a delight to see–with the old club house guarded

by two cannons. As usual, we were well-received, and our

hosts made everyone welcome. Terry had a tough match

with Alfred, but couldn’t overcome him. Thomas, who had

played two matches to catch up in the morning against

Penang Club, was outplayed by the Australian Air Force.

Graham had the joy of playing a 16-year old Malaysian

national junior player, Saswen, but despite auditioning for

Swan Lake on many shorts, was overcome by a spritely

young thing. Iain won his match comfortably, but Porky was

overcome by a tricky Quah. The squash match ended dead

even on matches and games. We then played some racquet

ball–which looked more like aerial ping pong. The evening

then adjourned to a banquet, where trophies and plaques

were exchanged with all vowing that this would be an

annual event.

RAINTREE DOUBLES SqUASH TOURNAMENT

In September, a depleted Tanglin Club squad made

the annual sojourn across the causeway to compete

in the Raintree Club’s annual Jumbo Doubles Squash

tournament. Although only four entries from The Tanglin

Club made the trip this year due to calendar clashes,

it was a quality side with Paul Isted and Shane Hagan

being classified as Number 1 Seeds after taking out the

event in 2013. Richard Hill was back to help carry Field

Pickering on his shoulders once again, and Craig Doel

was also doing the same for about-to-be sexagenarian

Glenn Bryce. Unfortunately, Satsy had entered

with Al Aspen who later pulled out due to work

commitments.

Satsy later enrolled the services of professional

Choong Kam Hing, however the latter was unable to

get to the courts in time, and was scratched from the

competition. Shane and Paul progressed the furthest,

but were beaten in the semi-finals by the SAFRA1 team

that they had beaten in the final last year. Craig and

Glenn punched above their weight and made progress

in the Classic plate, only to miss the last hurdle on the

Saturday night. As usual, a great weekend was had

by all (except Satsy) and we look forward to a much

better entry next year.

FRIENDLY GAMES AGAINST BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE

On 9 October, arguably one of the strongest squash teams

ever to assemble at The Tanglin Club greeted the visiting

British RAF squash team. Due to the expected strength

and guaranteed fitness of the British RAF side, we put

together a side featuring no less than five A-Graders.

Such was the strength of our side that Mr Gaurav Yadav

was listed as number seven in the team–a bit of a surprise

for a guy who thinks he should be number one. British

RAF included two ladies in their side, and the strength of

our team took a hit when our only other lady in the Club,

Merina Mackenzie, informed us that she was injured. Lucky

that Puneet Chadha was prepared to step into the side,

but unlucky that he couldn’t beat the lady from British

RAF! Brenda also found the going tough, so we were 2-0

down at the start. Never mind, the top end would come

through with the goods. Thankfully, our top four players all

won, but that was the closest we got to winning as numbers 5

to 11 all lost, giving an overwhelming result 7-4 to the British

RAF. Even our would-be number one Mr Yadav was unable

to win at number seven! However the off-court entertainment

was much more fun, and the highlight was a presentation

by Damien May to me of a framed picture of the British RAF

Red Arrow plane, which was autographed by all of the Red

Arrow pilots. This photo will hold pride of place in the squash

courts as remembrance of a competitive squash friendly and

fun after match that continued long into the night.

It was a glorious morning with the sun beaming kindly down

up, there was no problem at all accommodating everyone,

However, all who participated enjoyed the morning immensely.

Thereafter, lunch was served at Tangles, and we certainly

Here are reviews of Eileen Chanin’s Limbang Rebellion: 7 Days

in December 1962

The book highlights true heroes such as police personnel and

ordinary people who did extraordinary things to protect and save

others in great danger. –Borneo Post

This is a human tale of courage, fortitude and bravery…It is a

gripping tale of seven dramatic days that helped quell the initial

North Kalimantan National Army efforts of taking over the whole of

Borneo Island. It was the beginning of a wider and longer campaign

that came to be called Confrontation. –Globe and Laurel

It also gives an engrossing account of the bold commando assault

on Limbang. Chanin’s account of the improvised attack, the Marines

traveling by night in two commandeered barges, will delight any

military buff. –Sydney Morning Herald

With an impressive command of detail, the author has gathered

witness accounts from her own interviews and a treasure trove of

archival material that give the reader a visceral understanding of

what it was like to be a prisoner, and what it was like to be a soldier

seeing action for the first time. –The Australian
