My Fellow Members

595 Ordinary Members attended the SGM held on 14/1/13. I am encouraged by the record turnout; it shows that Members are interested in Club affairs and want to have a say in its future direction.

The SGM approved amendments to Rule 45A on the indemnity of Club officers, and Rule 45B on dispute resolution in the Club. The amended Rule 45A balanced the right of the Club officer to an indemnity and the responsibility of the GC to monitor and control the money spent on the indemnity. Without the indemnity, it would be difficult to persuade good people to serve. On the other hand, the GC may, in a suitable case, accept a reasonable settlement of a dispute. The amendments restricted the circumstances in which the indemnity applies. For the purpose of the indemnity, Club officers are required to engage the services of the lawyers on the Club’s panel. It also allows the Club to recover the legal expenses where the breaches of the terms of the indemnity are subsequently discovered.

The amended Rule 45B created a compulsory scheme of conciliation, mediation and arbitration (“CMA”) to resolve disputes in the Club. As the GC and/or GC members are the usual counterparties in such disputes, it was felt that the GC should not be involved in the CMA process in the interest of fairness and transparency. Accordingly, a Board comprising former Club presidents was established to oversee the CMA process. The amended Rule 45B also disallowed legal representation for parties during conciliation and mediation.

Members approved expenditure not exceeding $2.42 million to refurbish the Wine Bar, Wet Bar, Card Room, Deli and the terrace dining and to improve and extend the Tavern kitchen. The refurbishments and extensions, when completed, will enlarge the capacity of the Tavern, terrace dining and the Deli. Billiards will return to the area vacated by the Card Room which adjoins the Wet Bar; it is hoped that the proximity of

billiards to F&B outlets will bring back the glory days of the sport, encourage greater F&B patronage and increase opportunities for Members to relax and enjoy themselves. At the same time, the GC is looking into rationalisation of space in the Sports Centre, resulting from the empty Billiards Room and the downsizing of the Spa and relocation of the hair salon to smaller premises on the 5th floor.

Resolution 3, to increase the PTM from 4,000 to 5,000 was not passed as it failed to receive the 75% majority vote. The 238 votes opposed to a PTM increase defeated the 336 votes of those in favour.

A perceptive Member, who regretted the failure to increase the PTM, gave me a masterly analysis of the vote on Resolution 3. With his permission, I will share his insights with Members. His starting point was that the 238 Members wanted to see a “comprehensive strategic plan” and rejected the PTM increase (in Resolution 3) as a first step. They wanted to know the “ultimate destination”.

He said that there are many “interlocking relationships”; among them, facilities capacity v membership size v usage demand, waiting list of Members’ children v the 51/49 ratio v PTM, ageing membership v waiting list v absent membership list, members’ spending patterns v operating deficits and future funding.

Members (as a collection of vested interests) will reject any “short-term quick fix” like an increase in subscriptions or minimum spend.

According to him, Members want “clarity” in the debate on the future of the Club. We will have to forge a consensus on the ‘ultimate destination”. If Members want transferability, in whatever form, then as a Club, we will have to navigate our way to that goal. In the process, we will have to confront vested interests; including, Members who don’t want any kind of change for whatever reason, Members with children on the waiting list who will not want to pay the higher entrance fees that comes with transferability and

Members who want transferability but who do not want to pay the premium for conversion to transferability.

He also said that there are also traditionalists who oppose transferability in any form because they are fearful that the “ambience, image and camaraderie (or what’s left of it)” and the traditions and the cosmopolitan style and ethos of the Club will be irretrievably lost if we go transferable.

I understand that the Review Sub-Committee (“RSC”) which is looking into, among other things, transferability and “buy-back” is close to completing its report on those issues. When received, the GC will provide Members with the RSC report, and engage and consult Members on the way forward.

This is a members’ club. Members decide on the sort of club they want.

On 10 February 2013, we celebrate the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Snake. Helen and I would like to take this opportunity to wish Members and Staff, their families and friends

THE TANGLIN CLUB2

Page 5: The Tanglin Club Magazine: February 2013

Dear Members,

It’s nice to see our members back from their holidays and visiting the Club again. Although January was relatively quiet in terms of events, members who attended ‘A Peranakan Affair’ on 18 January at the Churchill Room were thoroughly entertained by the music and dancing, as well the Peranakan-inspired cuisine, which was well-received.

January also saw our members voting at the Special General Meeting on 14 January, with an attendance of more than 500 members. Three of four resolutions were passed, and members gave their consent to the refurbishment of the Wet Bar, Wine Bar and Card Room. In the weeks ahead, the renovations will commence. We seek our members’

understanding and patience during this period. The disruption to daily routines will be kept to a minimum. The Wet Bar, Terrace Restaurant and Deli Lounge will be temporarily relocated, and notices will be installed in advance to advise members.

The Lunar New Year is upon us, so don’t forget to usher in the Year of the Snake at the Club’s traditional Lion Dance on Sunday, 10 February. Do bring your friends and family to the performance.

I wish all our members a Happy Lunar New Year!

The long-awaited Saraca Room was declared open by the President of the Club, Mr Sim, together with other GC Members namely: Mr Kwek, Mr Newman, Mr Sadiq, and Mrs Sandford on 19 December 2012. With its opening, staff who work split shift and long hours can look forward to relaxation by playing a game in the new recreation room or taking a power nap to rejuvenate themselves.

On behalf of the staff, the management would like to thank the GC and HRSC Members for supporting this renovation project.

SGM RESULTS

The Club saw a healthy turnout of members during the SGM, with more than 600 members registered to vote. The rainy weather did not turn anyone away, and even limited parking spaces did not deter members. By the beginning of the meeting at 6pm, there were enough members to form a quorum, and the meeting was underway.

Resolution 3, on the subject of the Planned Total Membership, was discussed first. Many comments on this were heard, and ranged from doing an in-depth study on the Buy Back Scheme, to opinions on transferable membership, which, amongst other issues, is being studied by the Review Sub-Committee. Another member had suggested that since this resolution was brought up in previous meetings before, that the General Committee go ‘back to the drawing board’ on the issue, and come up with alternative solutions. Among these was whether the ‘51/49 Rule’ is a sacred cow, and whether this should be amended to allow for a higher proportion in the Singaporean category.

Another member had the opinion that the entrance fee of $35,000 was too low for a premier club like The Tanglin Club, and consideration should be given to increase this amount.

Two votes by a show of hands were carried out for the proposed amendments to the Resolution 3. The first, to increase the PTM by 500 (to 4500) received 42 votes in favour, and 145 votes against. The second to increase the PTM by 2000 (to 6000) received 14 votes in favour, and 182 votes against. Eventually, through secret ballot, Resolution 3 received 57.5% of the valid votes cast, but was not passed as it did not achieve a minimum 75% majority required for this Resolution.

A lengthy discussion on Resolutions 1 and 2 gave some insight on the subject of indemnity for office bearers of the General Committee. From the results of the secret ballot, members approved the proposed amendments to the Resolutions.

Dr. Richard Tan of the General Committee gave a presentation on the proposed refurbishment to the Wine Bar, Wet Bar and Terrace Restaurant, and the Deli Lounge. This was followed up by a presentation by Mr Patrick Kwek, the Sports & Recreation Convenor who emphasised that approval of Resolution 4 would allow the Club to review the facilities in the Sports & Recreation Complex like the Spa, the Hair Salon, the Billairds Room ane the Tangles that had not performed to their earlier expectations. Members showed their approval for the refurbishment by voting in favour of Resolution 4.

The General Committee wishes to thank the members who attended the SGM and gave their views on the Resolutions on the agenda.

THE TANGLIN CLUB7

Dear Members,

The first month of the new year evoked feelings of nostalgia for me, as I brought some visiting friends around Singapore. As I brought them to places like Collyer Quay, I was amazed to see how much things have changed in Singapore since I came here in the 50s. Everything is so modern now, with glass and steel replacing the old architecture of bricks and mortar. Thank goodness that the Urban Redevelopment Authority has a conservation programme that protects these icons of an older age.

The Tanglin Club’s premises may be somewhat modern, but as an institution we have survived for a century and a half, and that’s says a lot. For the Club to be constantly rejuvenated, old friendships must be strengthened and new ones formed, for our traditions to continue on.

Speaking of traditions, the Lunar New Year is upon us, and the Club is gearing up for another round of traditional festivities once again. To all my dear members in the Club, I wish you a happy Lunar New Year, and may prosperity and joy fill your hearts all year round!

BOOK REVIEWLOW PRESSUREby Sandra Brown

Bellamy Lyston was only 12 years old when her older sister Susan was killed on a stormy Memorial Day. Bellamy’s fear of storms is a legacy of the tornado that destroyed the crime scene along with her memory of what really happened during the day’s most devastating moments.

Now, 18 years later, Bellamy has written a sensational, bestselling novel based on Susan’s murder. Because the book was inspired by the tragic event that still pains her family, she published it under a pseudonym to protect them from unwanted publicity. But when an opportunistic reporter for a tabloid newspaper discovers that the book is based on fact, Bellamy’s identity is exposed along with the family scandal. Moreover, Bellamy becomes the target of an unnamed assailant who either wants the truth about Susan’s murder to remain unknown or, even more threatening, is determined to get vengeance for a man wrongfully accused and punished.

In order to identify her stalker, Bellamy must confront the ghosts of her past, including Dent Carter, Susan’s wayward and reckless boyfriend – and an original suspect in the murder case. Dent, with this and other stains on his past, is intent on clearing his name, and he needs Bellamy’s sealed memory to do it.

But her safeguarded recollections, which were once unlocked, would now pose dangers that neither of them could foresee and puts both their lives in peril.

CHRISTMAS LUNCH AND BRIDGE GAME The final function of 2012 for The Tanglin Club Bridge Section was a highly enjoyable Christmas Lunch and Bridge Game held in the Raffles Room on Monday, December 3. Committee members who were wearing festive colours and Santa hats, greeted 64 members and guests. The Raffles Room was full of seasonally decorated tables bearing bright red poinsettia plants which one lucky person from each table got to take home with them. There was also a wrapped welcome gift of a bridge-scoring pen for everyone for future use in the Card Room! The chefs had prepared a wonderful Christmas lunch with all the trimmings which everyone enjoyed before indulging in some festive carol singing which set the mood for the afternoon’s game. At the end of the lunch, Mrs. Sharon Grey, Convener of the Bridge Section, presented the 2012 Club Championship prizes, awarded according to the number of master points accrued during the preceding year and the results were as follows:

Monday Afternoon Game – Mrs. Shyamala Kanagasundram - 534 PointsWednesday Afternoon Game – Mrs. Anjana Beri - 549 PointsFriday Afternoon Game – Mrs. Anjana Beri – 729 PointsOverall Club Champion for 2012 – Mrs. Anjana Beri – 1809 Points

We hope that 2013 has started out well for everyone! We had a good break over the Christmas period and the year was capped off with our Christmas Snooker Marathon and BBQ Dinner on 29 December 2012. We had an amazing turnout of a total of 36 members.

We would like to thank every member for their participation and congratulations to the winners: Most Number of Wins: Arshad BhojaniMost Consecutive Wins: Ang Soo KeeHighest Break: Dr. Ng Boon Keng

We brought back the BBQ dinner by the poolside which older and past Section members remember fondly and in line with our theme of rejuvenating the section, former Section members were invited for the dinner to foster a stronger bond among fellow snooker players. The merriment was enhanced by the good food, good wine and great company!

Our ongoing event is the Annual Snooker Championship – Concorde Trophy which

runs from 14th January 2013 to 2nd February 2013, this is actually for 2012 as our calendar was so full last year that it got pushed to this year!

We have planned many exciting events for the year ahead, and look forward to seeing more active participation this year!

We have also decided to share with members on a series of snooker tips. To kick this off, here is a tip on the control of the cue ball by the master, Terry Griffiths: “We all lose control of the cue ball at one time or another –here is one common fault:

Tip addressed at the wrong height on the cue ball:To position the cue ball using spins you first need to make a judgment on what height your tip needs to be on the cue ball. Many players simply have poor judgment when making this decision. The most common faults are placing the tip too low on the cue ball for top spin and too high for back spin. These faults are generally caused by fear of mis-cueing.

Correction:It may help to think of the cue ball as a clock face. For top spin you need to have your tip addressed near 12 o clock. You will be tempted to drop the tip too low or raise the butt of the cue too high to avoid the mis-cue. Experiment with getting your tip as high as you feel comfortable with (with a level cue). Even by getting a few millimetres closer to the top of the cue ball you will see your top spin application improve. This in turn will open up more positional options in your game. For backspin you need to lift the butt of your cue slightly to get to the bottom of the cue ball. Make sure you keep this plane of delivery as you strike the cue ball and complete your action.”

That’s all for this month! Happy Lunar New Year to all members!

BALUT

December eased over the horizon, and in the spirit of easing, the Balut Section had a friendly session for the ‘’newbies’’ mid-month. A sort of gentle goodbye to the year and best wishes for the holidays and such stuff. The newbies made their intentions clear for the coming year by laying down scores that made them look like old hands. Anthony Rawlinson threw the highest score of 637 and Captain Sapinah stopped the onslaught with her highest game score of 132. Yes, the 2013 season hold much promise!

In the meanwhile, for those of you asking “What is Balut?”, it begins with deep breathing exercises, loosening of the wrists and shoulders, and some hamstring stretches. Now read on:

Created by an American soldier stationed in the Philippines as an alternative to poker, Balut was named after an incubated duck egg delicacy available in some Southeast Asian countries. A popular past-time of Danish businessmen who travelled to Asia regularly, this social dice game is delightfully simple yet profoundly enlightening.

Those who are interested in Balut but not quite sure how to go about it fear not, for we demystify the game of Balut for you right here:

• Balut is a game played with five dice by two or more players, the optimum being five. Each player in turn shakes the dice, numbered 1 – 6, using a leather box, and throws them onto a pad or flat surface.

• Each player shall have up to three throws in each round, and may put out any number of dice after either of the first throws, or put back in the box before the next throw any or all, the object being to secure the best possible combination of the dice for scoring the most points.

• Each player should start out attempting the high scores of Balut (5 of a kind), Low & High Straight (a run) or Full House (2 of one

number, 3 of another). If he fails in this he can then enter his score either under Fours, Fives or Sixes, depending on the extent of the failure, but he must have had one of that number amongst the dice.

• Any score over say 22, is not a bad “Choice”, but beginners are advised to keep “Choice” open for as long as possible. It does help in the long run! Any failure to achieve Balut or a Straight when every other section is completed results in “Scrubbing” one or the other. Some prefer to scrub straight, others Balut. That is really a personal preference.

• A ‘balut” is a five of a kind and always scores 30, regardless of the face value of the dice.

• A “straight” and a “full house” score the face value of the dice. A ‘low straight” is a sequence from 1 to 5 (15 points) and a “high straight” from 2 to 6 (20 points). A “full house” is a three of a kind and any pair, the maximum scores possible being 28 points (a combination of 3 sixes and a pair of 5s).

THE AIM: to score as many points as possible by the end of the game – the maximum under those rules being 183.

The dance students had a great time executing their newly acquired dance steps under the watchful and approving eyes of their Russian Dance Instructor Andrey Gurbunov at the Christmas and Graduation Ball on 15 December. The President gamely joined the students on the dance floor with his wife, Dance Convenor, Helen. The event was well attended and it was Christmas time in the Churchill Room with bells ringing and the large crowd singing favourite Christmas carols to music accompaniment on the flute by a member. Food was excellent and the resident band, Penny Lane did a great job with the music. Thanks go to Restaurant Manager Adnan and his team for looking after the members and guests so well. LAWN BOWLS

ANNUAL DINNERThe evening was a great success. Club Treasurer and active lawn bowler Zoeb Sadiq has been trying to win a trophy for some time and this year he had a chance to handle them all as he presented them to the 2012 winners.

We also had the chance to thank Section Committee Members for the time given and effort made during 2012. Special thanks go to our convenor Rodger Kimpton for his contagious enthusiasm in promoting our interests and ensuring that there is always something to look forward to. The S & R staff and Cielito in particular, were thanked for diligently keeping the Section activities running smoothly throughout the year. Thanks also go to Bill Gartshore who did a great job as master of ceremonies and the Tangles catering staff made sure we had a good meal as well as no empty glasses. Now we have embarked on our programme for the year ahead knowing that by this time next year we shall be stronger and more vibrant than ever.

THE

Kung Hei Fat Choi to all our readers especially those born in the year of the Snake. If Snake bowlers make themselves known to us when taking part in social bowls during Chinese New Year they might hear news of an advantageous nature!

CHRISTMAS CARNIVALHopefully this is not being read by nor to bowlers under the age of six or seven because they would be disappointed to know that there were five Santas on the Green competing in the carnival. Fortunately no one claimed overall intellectual property rights enabling the Santas to play against one another without any aggravation. The spirit of Christmas prevailed, the more so after the consumption of a few toddies. The bowling wasn’t taken too seriously and most competitors took the opportunity to advise their selected Santa of what their expectations were on Christmas morning. So far your scribe has had no reports of unhappy experiences although one elderly gentleman is known to have cried himself to sleep because his request for a new set of bowls fell on deaf ears.

CONVENOR’S AWARDDevi Hodgkinson, our queen of social activity, is the recipient of the award this year in recognition of her unfailing enthusiasm and conscientiousness in arranging our after match functions and the celebratory aspects of the annual dinner. She always manages to produce an enticing menu, with just enough of everything to ensure that we all enjoy the occasion. As the proverb says “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”. Devi as a result has many admirers. Thanks Devi, keep up the good work.

Happy New Year to everyone from your scribe.

SQUASH

The Squash Section had a quiet January as we got ready for the President's Cup, the largest squash doubles tournament in the world, which is hosted annually at The Tanglin Club (January 25 to 27 - more on the tournament in next month's magazine).

The Squash Section has a full calendar of events for 2013, beginning with the President’s Cup at the end of January.

In February, the national squash league will resume play with The Tanglin Club "A" Grade team looking to defend its first place finish from last year. The "B" team has done some strategic recruiting and looks to make its mark on the 2013 season.

Attached here are Section members training for the President’s Cup.

TENNIS

TANGLIN STABLE ADDS ANOTHER THOROUGHBREDPierre Capdeville joins the Tanglin Club coaching staff, replacing long-serving Greg Hassett who has returned to Australia. Pierre, 31, holds the official French government degree for professional sporting instruction, the “Brevet d’Etat d’educateur “in tennis. He will arrive in mid-February, and members will get a chance to work with and spar with a former hitting partner for legend Stefan Edberg and former WTA player Magdaleena Maleeva..

Pierre was once ranked No 2 in the Boys 18 age group in France, and was a member of the Tricolore team that won the European championships for the Boys 16s. Injury prevented Pierre from furthering his professional career and he immediately began coaching. He has coached and managed at several clubs in France including the Club sportif de Marseille and the Tennis Club de Beauvallon in St. Tropez.

With the addition of Pierre, Tanglin now boasts a world-class coaching team virtually unmatched in quality and experience in Singapore. Welcome, Pierre!

TANGLIN’S SMITH WORKS WITH TOP TOURING PROSTanglin’s club director of tennis Ken Smith was recently in Abu Dhabi to assist organizers and conduct clinics alongside some of the world’s biggest drawcards in men’s tennis today. Ken was on court with Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Janko Tipsarevic, Tomas Berdych, and Nicolas Almagro to conduct clinics for tournament sponsors, international and local media, as well as leading juniors from the United Arab Emirates.

*The tennis sub-committee would like to wish all members a happy and prosperous Lunar New Year. Do join us for our CNY bash. Please do come decked out in red!

NOTICE• Effective February 1, 2013 after an initial trial period, tennis court bookings will revert back to 7 a.m., one week in advance. For example, if a member wishes to book a court on Monday, 21st January at 4 pm, the member can either call the sports centre or log in via the online booking system from 7 a.m. a week earlier on Monday, 14th January. We strongly urge members to continue using the online booking system. The sub-committee thanks all members for their thoughts, feedback and ideas, and as always, we welcome any contribution from members over court usage and our booking system.

• The Tanglin Club will hold its annual tennis championships in April, and members will be able to register online for the first time this year. Please refer to the sports centre or notice boards for more details.

• Our tennis fraternity will gather for Chinese New Year on February 16 for lots of food, tennis and fellowship. As is tradition, please do gather in red, or as some say because it is the Year of the Snake, in green. Don’t forget your Hong Baos!

• Club tennis on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 5-7 pm will be cancelled from February due to a lack of interest. These outdoor courts will be made available for bookings instead.

For some women it is ultimately a question of trust. So never mind what the labels say, they still stick to their favorite brand. Others are more practical – you want to test it first. If the skincare product works on your skin, you buy no matter what price and which brand name.

But I am one person who advocates careful reading of all labels before making a purchase. If you are so careful about reading what the labels indicate on the bottle of tomato ketchup at a supermarket, why are you not as curious about the ingredients listed on the jar of the night cream at a beauty store?

It is common knowledge that skincare brands will never, ever divulge their secret formula. Even if they do, they are not likely to reveal the exact percentage of active ingredients blended in the formulation.

Last issue of Tanglin Club newsletter talked about facial treatments as being more than just “cleanse, tone and moisturise”. Skincare regimen has gone through revolutionary changes and today its products contain active ingredients that are multi-functional.

In addition to removing grime from your face, additional ingredients in the Cleanser may heal broken skin (by the presence of Aloe vera or Lavender Extract). Or it may prevent further outbreak of acne (with presence of Tea Tree Extract).

The Moisturiser may be enriched with antioxidants like Vitamin C for cell renewal and Co-enzyme Q10.

My point is that the more you read and the more questions you ask, the closer you get to making the right choice. Some of your questions should be – “Is this product safe for my skin?”, “What are the preservatives used?”, “What are their benefits?”, “Are there any perfume that I may be allergic to?” and “When is the expiry date?”.

In 2007, a study conducted by the Environmental Working Group in the U.S., found that 383 cosmetic products contained ingredients that were banned in Canada, Japan and the EU nations. Making a habit to read the labels will certainly ensure that you make the right purchase.

This is how you start.

First run through the ingredients on the list. For organic products check that the logo used are from reliable sources. Some brands use the word “organic” too freely in order to justify charging high prices for its products. Often the brand classifies its products “organic” when the organic ingredients constitute only 70% of the total ingredients.

However, products should contain at least 95% of organic ingredients to qualify for the “Certified Organic” logo from a recognised organic association like in the U.S. or Europe. Be smart and learn to identify recognised certified organic logos.Next, the ingredients label on the product depicts the percentage of the ingredients in descending order. You

may see the word, “Aqua” which means water, listed at the top of the list. This means water has the largest percentage in the product.

When you want to compare prices and value between two brands, you need to check the percentage of the other ingredients and where are they positioned in the ingredient list. For example, if Aloe vera is listed near the top of the label for Brand A and much lower in the list for Brand B, it means Brand A has a higher concentration of Aloe vera. You then can decide which brand to choose.

There are two more information to check. One is the “lid” symbol. This indicates the recommended number of months left on the shelf life once you open the lid.

And two, the expiry date of the product.

However, not all products require an expiry date. 100% essential oils and spa salts last for many years when they are properly stored.

To illustrate my point on “read the label”, I list below the information on the label of ‘Radiance Serum’, and my understanding of this ‘must-have’ product from the Spa Botanica Everyday Skincare collection.

RADIANCE SERUM100% Natural Source Ingredients, No Artificial Preservatives, No Animal TestingThe perfect daily solution for brightening the skin and reducing acne scars and hyper-pigmentation. It restores radiance for an all-over glowing experience.

The cost of the Radiance Facial using the above serum at Spa Botanica for Tanglin Club members is S$55. After a relaxing facial, you emerge from the spa treatment room looking radiant, rejuvenated and years younger. Your skin is plumped up and glowing with both your skin colour and texture in perfect balance. There are no miracles at work. It is simply the benefits of active ingredients in Spa Botanica products. I also understand why many members opt for facials at Spa Botanica - great value for a small price.

Jennifer Ng, the Spa Director of Spa Botanica at Tanglin Club, is a strong advocate of “read before you buy” principle. Why should shopping for skincare be any different from buying groceries, she asks.
