5Special General Meeting March Results

Page 4: The Tanglin Times: April 2014

Dear Members,

I am pleased to report that the events in March had good attendance, especially for Ole Edvard Antonsen & Band concert on 1 March, Tanglin Conversations with Marcus Langdon on 5 March, and Malam Nostalgia on 15 March. More exciting events and activities have been planned for the coming months, with the Japanese-themed Exquisitely Japanese with Guest Chef Norman Lim on 6 April, and the major event of this year which everyone is looking forward to: the Club Party on 3 May. This year’s Club Party is themed ‘Carnival del Rio’, and promises to be another evening of revelry and sumptuous cuisine. Bookings are open, so make your booking early.

As many of you already know, several months ago, I made the decision not to renew my contract with the Club, to pursue other opportunities in my career. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you, including the many Sub-Committee and General Committee Members for your friendship and support, and especially

the staff, for their outstanding dedication and camaraderie. Although I will miss my colleagues and the Members, I am looking forward to a new challenge and a new phase in my career. I leave with good memories of the many pleasant interactions with you in the Tavern, Wet Bar, and around the Club.

While the General Committee is looking for my replacement, they have appointed our very capable Financial Controller, Clara Tan, as Acting General Manager, effective 29 March 2014. I hope you will extend to her the same courtesies and friendship that you have given me during my tenure.

Kind Regards

Roy HiggsGeneral ManagerThe Tanglin Club

general manager’s message

My Fellow Members

First and foremost I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your confidence and support given me in the Special General Meeting (SGM) of the Club held on 3rd March 2014 and for electing me to be your President for the remaining three months of the Club’s year 2013-14.

Admittedly the three months is a short period but nonetheless a very challenging one. The newly elected GC would be confronted with many pressing issues. However it is my intention to focus our attention on the priority issues based on the timeless principle of ‘first things first, second things none’

Top of my priority list is the Club’s Annual General Meeting which has been fixed on Monday, 26 May 2014 at 6pm. The Club Annual Report and the Annual Accounts have to be prepared and finalized for the AGM.

In the events leading up to the SGM of 3rd March 2014, it was clear that the Membership at large wanted enhanced good governance, greater transparency and accountability of the Committee Members and to focus on programs for the good of the Club and the Members. This is perhaps easier said than done but we have to start somewhere. If nothing else, it is my earnest intent to at least set the platform or start the process going. And with your cooperation I am confident we can achieve it.

In my election pitch and at recent forums, I have advocated for a Facilities Review starting with the Food and Beverage (F&B) outlets. In essence this would entail a thorough review of the Club’s F&B outlets to determine whether each of these outlets is being optimally utilized in the physical and financial sense. If you recall, a similar review was done some four years ago by the students of the Singapore Management University. The results/recommendation of this exercise can be the starting point of the Facilities Review.

The preceding two SGMs – the SGM/30th September 2013 and the SGM/21st December 2013 – clearly signalled that Members wanted more if not better in-house Chinese cuisine. In this respect I have tasked the F&B Sub-Committee to explore all the possibilities and come up with a recommendation which can be implemented expeditiously at minimum cost to the Club and with least inconvenience to Members.

The way ahead is challenging and the tasks many. However they can be made less arduous given your support and understanding. Together let us move forward to continue to make our Club a great social Club.

star employees of the monthThere were two Club employees who won: Shamima Mansoor from Library (who joined in February 2010), and Christopher Soh Kim Weng from the Finance department (who joined in December 2007). Shamima has always provided reader, advisory and information services to the Members for 4 years. Christopher, our Cost Analyst, has been participating in various corporate projects requiring a

financial evaluation for the past 6 years. Congratulations to them for their excellent service and dedication to the Club!

Fellow Members

As the newly appointed Editor of The Tanglin Times, in ex-officio capacity as Convenor of the Library and Members’ Communications Sub-Committee, I would like to thank you for your continued contributions to the Club magazine. Without your submitted articles, the Club magazine would not be where it is today. I would also like to thank our dedicated Club staff who tirelessly weave all the articles together into high-quality monthly magazine editions that our Members can be proud of. Lastly, I would like to thank Shirley Low, the recent Editor and Convenor of the Magazine and Website Sub-Committee, together with Sub-Committee Members Agnes Gabriel and Susan Gallagher, for their contributions to the Club magazine and the Club’s overall communications platform. I’m sure many of you would agree that the overall look and feel of the Club magazine has noticeably improved over the last year during their service.

The Tanglin Times is deeply rooted in the Club’s tradition. For decades, the Club magazine has been the primary communications platform used to disseminate Club events and news to Members, and will continue to do so. Many of our Members rely on it to keep in touch with what’s going on in the Club.

In the past few years, the Club’s traditional communications platform has evolved to keep up with the Digital Age, starting with the online version of The Tanglin Times, the NewsBites emails (for Members who have registered), phased replacements of static announcement posters with dynamic digital displays, and finally, continual improvements to the Club website to serve relevant information and online services to our Members.

Moving forward, more initiatives are being lined up to improve our

Club’s communication platform on both the magazine hardcopy and the digital side. For example, there is an initiative to improve the overall intuitive user experience of our Club website. Also, more online services will be added to the Club website, for the convenience of our Members.

Finally, I continue to sound the call for more Members to contribute articles to the Club magazine. Examples of articles: reviews on books and movies available in our Club library; travel experiences; educational lessons; hobbies, etc. As our Club is richly diverse in its nationalities and age-groups, I am certain that our Members’ shared experiences will be nothing short of colourful and enriching. Contributor’s guidelines can be found in the Club website; type the following link in your web browser address bar to view the guidelines: http://www.tanglinclub.org.sg/magazine/WritersGuidelines.pdf. If you have enquiries about the magazine, please drop an email to Habib, our Senior Marketing & Communications Executive [email protected]. I will leave you all with a quote: “We don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” ~ Walt Disney

Enjoy our magazine!

Thank YouThe staff would like to take this opportunity to thank all Members who contributed towards the Staff Ang Pow fund last January. The generosity of these Members is much appreciated.

We have had the pleasure of Albert conducting the choir since the beginning of 2014 and as the choir comprises Members that have a good knowledge of music and those without knowledge of music, it was felt that we should find a way to get everyone on the same playing field. To this end, Albert developed a system which he calls “The Secret Rituals of the Tanglin Club Choir”. This system should have some fun so that Members will not find it boring and in this regard, Albert started the Members by using some name of food which we are all very familiar.

“Nasi lemak, Nasi lemak… Mee Rebus, Mee Rebus… Hor Fun, Hor Fun…” chanted the choir, enthralled and hypnotized by the gentle rhythmic repetitions. The fevered crowd soon began making strange handsigns in the air, intoning curious sounds in a strange language that only the inducted would understand.

Yes, this is The Tanglin Club Choir (TCC) in rehearsal, practicing the fine art of choral singing whilst sharpening one’s eyes, ears and intellect through a Hungarian-inspired approach to music, more commonly known as the ‘Kodály Concept’.

The Kodály Concept is a central tenet of his decades-long conducting-teaching practice. Apart from learning healthy vocal production, TCC choristers also learn the ABCs of music that eventually leads to the reading of musical ‘words’ and ‘sentences’ after diligent practice. The Kodály Concept’s prominent use of rhythm names, handsigns (see Figure 1) and solfège (a system of learning pitch that combines ‘moveable-do’ and ‘fixed-do’ systems) all seek to help one ‘hear with one’s eyes’.

I find that what Albert has been doing is very interesting as it enables those without any musical knowledge a chance to pick up some ideas on how one might sing much better.

The Kodály Concept is more than just a bag of music-learning tools. Named after Hungarian composer, musicologist and educator Zoltán Kodály, it encompasses humanistic philosophies and ideas that seek to empower and enrich both amateur and professional musicians. According to Kodály, the characteristics of the good musician include “a well-trained ear, a well-trained intelligence, a well-trained heart and a well-trained hand”. Apart from developing virtuosic and hearing abilities, the cultivation of one’s mind and heart through music - the ability to communicate clearly, to seek to understand and be understood by another, is just as important.

For the more experienced and able singers in TCC who already read music, they can attest to the fact that the ‘differentiated learning’ and activities he has adapted into the Kodály Concept keeps them engaged and sufficiently challenged. In the few TCC rehearsals I have been to, there was never a single dull moment as we prepare for our upcoming June performance at the British Club.

You will likely catch a whiff of the choir’s weekly induction rehearsals if you come to The Tanglin Club Theatrette on Wednesday nights, 7.30pm to 9.30pm. If you are a team player with a willingness to experiment, learn and grow with others, you can be allowed access to our secret arts. Prior music or singing background is certainly welcomed but not necessary. I look forward to meeting with you soon.

This time round, we included guests to sign up for this evening event as we wanted more participation. We had about twenty players only and this might have been because of the short notice given. Anyway, a pre-ordered meal out of a choice of three, with a glass of wine, was served and every player had to rotate playing every other throughout the evening. Much fun was had and all went home rather late, tired but happy.

During the last few months we’ve been having really interesting Darts sessions with friends.

Spending time with the Darters is always at the heart of socializing with them as well practicing your skills of the game. Here’s that obviousness, sometimes we make the mistake of thinking spending time with someone is all about coming up with the perfect event to attend. If we can’t come up with anything spectacular enough to do, we may even conclude there’s no point in hanging out. When you choose to be with a group of friends in your free time, the main reason you’re there is to enjoy the company of others. Talking to another person, especially someone whose conversation and personality you like, is a rewarding experience on its own.

So join us on Saturdays at 3pm just for interaction or Practice, Practice, Practice three golden rules for becoming a good player.

Thank you friends for making the Saturday afternoon so enjoyable. Albert, it was so good to have a game or two with you. We welcome you with much love and happiness.

The Balut Section likes it when new Members join up, and even more so when they turn up to play. Noni Heritage did just that and the beaming countenance in the picture is for the highest game score of 142 points that, she says, was because of you know who’s expert guidance. She did also acknowledge that the round in which she got the prize for, she was generally uplifted by the other players telling her that she could get all the columns filled. Well done Noni and more to come we expect.

Deepa Gupta meanwhile played in her usual calm fashion and recorded the highest total score of 622 points. Deepa is not one to test tensile strength and we suspect that the tables favour her gentle approach with just rewards. Does this mean that Balut sessions will from now on be played in hushed tones and gentle placing of the cup on the tables? Perish the thought!

It was a galloping start for the Dance Section’s Oriental Night on the 8th day of the Year of the Horse when a record 166 participants pounded their feet on the dance floor of the Churchill Room. Many were dressed in their Chinese New Year best and the best dressed were won by Members Brenda Cheung and KW Lee.

International dance competitors Andrey Gorbunov from Russia and Karla Gerbes from Australia gave a performance of the Spanish Paso Doble and the Brazilian Samba.

With the recent events at the Club, Sports and Recreation Manager Dean, Sports and Recreation Co-Ordinator Uma, Food and Beverage Manager Zaini and Churchill Room Restaurant Manager Adnan did an excellent job in taking charge of the activities for the night. Patricia Hancock -Teoh again did not disappoint in her role of Emcee.

The Golf Section celebrated the arrival of the Year of the Horse with a Stableford Competition at SICC Sime Course, followed by dinner and Lo Hei. Forty four Members enjoyed good weather and coped well with the tricky greens and hard conditions.

Overall winner was Chua Wah Seng, with Etsuko Grundy coming second. There was also a “Blind Pairs” competition which was won by Chua Wah Seng and Anthony Teo with Etsuko Grundy and David White runners up.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Edward Loy, Anthony Teo, Wolfgang Hollerman and Frank Yung, though in some cases four

putts rather than birdies followed.

Members were encouraged to come dressed for the occasion with a prize on offer for the Best Dressed. This was won by Janet Potschke.

The dinner after the game was compered by Paul Healy who challenged us with a quiz about South Africa in anticipation of the Section trip there in the Autumn. This added to the fun at a very pleasant round off to the day.

DAYAN QIGONG (WILD GOOSE BREATHING EXERCISE) – 64 FORMSStarting Saturday, 3 May, 9.45am to 11am at the Gym

“Dayan qigong”, literally means “Wild Goose Breathing Exercise”, is a set of highly restorative exercise handed down through the ages among exclusive circles of the Kunlun School. Imitating the postures and movements of the wild goose and assimilating the ancient “daoyin” methods, it consists of both vigorous and gentle movements in which motion is alternated with stillness. By stimulating a strong sensation of “qi”, channels and acupoints, it provides an effective in preventing and curing diseases, strengthening the inner vital energy, improves blood circulation, avoiding premature aging and extending life. Dayan qigong helps to promote blood circulation and clear “jingmai”, or the passages through which vital energy flows. It is also a self therapy to train the body and mind, reduce stress and anxiety while improving overall physical fitness, balance and flexibility. Wild Goose qigong is a series of connected movements which make up a form. There are two parts, the first 64 movements and the second 64 movements. The 1st 64 forms work on post natal illnesses and can clear up old injuries as well. The 2nd 64 forms work on prenatal illnesses, or weaknesses in the body with which we were born. In these forms, there are a variety of fluttering, shaking and jerking movements which rid the body of toxins

ZHOU JIA KUNGFU36 HANDS BASIC BOXINGStarting Tuesday, 6 May, 4pm to 5pm at the MpH

Zhou Jia Kungfu was founded by Zhou Long who was born in 1891, on the eleventh day of the third lunar month in Sa Fu Village of the Canton Province, and died in 1919. His father was Zhou Fong Hoy and his mother maiden name was Li. At that time of its inception, this particular style of kungfu was labelled as having the head of Hung Gar, the tail of Choy Gar and the patterns of the tiger and leopard, or simply Hong Tao Choy Wei.It was so labelled because the essential techniques incorporated the mascular and mighty movements of Hung Gar and the swift footwork and complex kicking of Choy Gar, making it a very effective form of self defense with emphasis on simultaneous attack and defense.

Suitable for kids age 8 to 15 years old.

February was a busy month with competitions and friendly matches. The Tanglin Club was well represented in the National Singles (Men & Women) Championships. Zoher put in a valiant effort but missed qualifying for the semi-final by a whisker. On the other hand Virginia, who flew in from Australia for these games, played very well and reached the semi-final. Performance of other Tanglin Club players has improved tremendously and well done Belinda, Annette and Devi, Ted and Rodger.

Our Members had a very competitive friendly match versus Robina Rebels from queensland, Australia. Great learning opportunity for our Members.

Come and join us on the green and take up the challenge!

Book Of The Month

THE GOldFINCHby donna TarttAged thirteen, Theo Decker, son of a devoted mother and a reckless, largely absent father, survives an accident that otherwise tears his life apart. Alone and rudderless in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. He is tormented by an unbearable longing for his mother, and down the years clings to the thing that most reminds him of her: a small, strangely captivating painting that ultimately draws him into the criminal underworld.

As he grows up, Theo learns to glide between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love - and his talisman, the painting, places him at the centre of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling power. Combining unforgettably vivid characters and thrilling suspense, it is a beautiful, addictive triumph - a sweeping story of loss and obsession, of survival and self-invention, of the deepest mysteries of love, identity and fate.

DVD Of The Month

RUSH (2013)Starring Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl and oliva WildeDirected by Ron Howard

Two-time Academy Award winner Ron Howard delivers the exhilarating true story of a legendary rivalry that rocked the world. During the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, two drivers emerged as the best: gifted English boy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth, The Avengers) and his methodical, brilliant Austrian opponent, Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl, Inglorious Basterds). As they mercilessly clash on and off the Grand Prix racetrack, the two drivers push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there’s no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. Co-starring Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy), it’s the heart-racing, epic, action-drama that critics are calling “One of the best movies of this, or any, year” (Pete Hammond, Movieline).
