My Fellow Members

Food prices in the Club will be increased, from this month, in the Tavern. Modest price increases will be introduced gradually in other F&B outlets.

The last increase in food prices was about 6% in August 2007.

The GC is mindful that this is a sensitive issue for Members. For years the Club has been absorbing all the increases from our sup-pliers; hence our food cost has reached 45%. For the new menu in the Tavern, the prices of some items will remain, while others will see a small increase based on higher raw material cost. The aver-age increase will be about 6.5%; food cost alone has risen by more than 8% this year.

Apart from higher food cost, labour cost continues to rise. In 2011, based on a 3 to 4% incre-ment (NWC recommended 5%), our wage bill went up by about $300k. The increase in the rate of CPF contributions costs the Club $41k annually. In addition, the bonus for 2011 was $441k.

In the 2010/2011 Annual Report, at the operating level (without taking into account the Entrance fees from new Members), the deficit was about $1.8 mil-lion. After adding the $5 million Entrance fees, the surplus was $3.2 million. For FY 2011/2012, assuming no change in operat-ing income and expenditure, we

project an operating deficit of $3.2 million. We expect $4.2 million in Entrance fees, which will result in a surplus of $1 million.

For FY2012/2013, assuming a 3% cost increase and no revenue change, we project an operating deficit of $3.9 million. We expect $1 million in Entrance fees, result-ing in a deficit of $2.9 million. For FY 2013/2014, assuming a 3% cost increase and no revenue change, we project an operating deficit of $4.5 million. With $1 million in Entrance fees, the deficit will be $3.5 million.

Based on F&B sales of $9 mil-lion in FY 2010/2011, a 6.5 % increase in prices will bring in an additional $600k. However, for FY2011/2012, the additional reve-nue would be about $80k because the price increases are only for the Tavern f rom September 2011. Other things being equal, the additional revenue from the increased prices will help reduce the projected operating deficit to $3.1 million in FY2011/2012, $3.3 million in FY 2012/2013 and $3.9 million in FY 2013/2014.

I t i s obv ious that mere ly increasing F&B prices is woefully inadequate. The Club must aggres-sively pursue policies to increase productivity, cut wastage and reduce inefficiencies to lower costs. It could explore new rev-enue streams like paid parking. It could increase the income from Entrance fees by admitting more

members. It must make it attrac-tive for Members to spend more in the Club. Increasing subscriptions is another option.

The deficit issue is real and urgent. The Club must act. My Italian friends would say, se non ora, quando, if not now, when?

Pattaya 2011 Culinary Cup Competition

Th e T a n g l i n C l u b i s p r o u d o f t h e a c h i e v e m e n t o f i t s

Pastry Chef, Jackie Lee Lay San, who was part of the Singapore National Culinary Team in the Pattaya Culinary Cup Compe t i t i on t ha t ended on 7 August.

The Singapore Team emerged victorious as Champions, and it was a double delight as took place a few days before the nation’s

celebration of its independence. It was a fight to the finish, as 15 teams from 10 countries drew a large audience to view and sample the menus from the international chefs.

The journey to victory was not without it’s obstacles either; the team had to overcome periodic power outages, handle l imited ingredients, operate unfamil iar kitchen appliances and complete their dishes within a tight timeframe.

Singapore has now won the Competition for two years in a row. Congratulations, Jackie, you did the Club proud!

NOTICEMembers are reminded to note that their vehicles may be parked in the Club’s car parks only when the Members themselves are on the Club’s premises. Non-compliance may result in the suspension of car park rights in the Club.

Alternate Taxi Stop at the S&R ComplexFor the convenience of Club Members, an additional ‘Taxi’ light has been installed at the entrance to the Sports & Recreation Complex, as an alternate pick-up point in addition to the main Clubhouse.

Members who wish to flag for a taxi, may do so at the Sports & Recreation Counter located at Level 1.

Balut players had two interesting meets in July. Inter-Club League (Round 3) was hosted by the Eurasian

Association at SRC on the 15th. The Tanglin Club fielded 4 teams and Team 2 (Nina Menon, Lilan Lee, Bansi Sethuraman and Mavis Light) were the winners for that evening. In addition, Bansi recorded the highest total score (662) among 88 players and Fatema Sadiq got the spot prize for Balut-in-one throw. Hey, that is equivalent to a hole-in-one in golf – well almost! Well done, Team 2!

The monthly competition was well attended with 20 players vying to improve their standing in the leader board.

The monthly game winners are: Highest Total Score – Lilian Lee (641)Highest Game Score – Deepa Gupta (137)

Congratulations!

Regional NewsIn June, a team from the now-defunct

Town Club went to Manila Yacht Club for the annual tournament. I am delighted to report that our former Balut Convenor,

Kristian Bonnichsen, and a pioneer in promoting Balut in the Region, won the indiv idual championship. Congratulations, Kristian!

BRIDGE

In the past decade, there has been a steadily growing interest worldwide,

in the game of Bridge. An increasing number of university students, young professionals, baby boomers and senior citizens have discovered the challenges and pleasures of this game. One does not need to be an expert or an advanced player to find enjoyment in playing bridge.

New players, with guidance, quickly learn the social aspects of organised games and can have just as much fun as their more seasoned counterparts.

An added bonus is, of course, the opportunity of meeting people and making new friends.

Each year we have new members joining our Club. The statistics from our 2010/11 Annual Report show a total of 218 new members.

For the benefit of our members, both new and old, who know how to play Bridge but are unfamiliar with the rules of Duplicate games, we are pleased to inform you that there are weekly guided playing sessions

conducted by Mrs Esther Ling at The Tanglin Club.

Esther has been giving new players to Duplicate Bridge a helping hand for the past five years. Her sessions offer the ideal environment for players to practice and get acquainted with the rules of Duplicate Bridge in a non formal, friendly environment,

The purpose of these sessions is to prepare and give players the confidence needed to advance to our regular Duplicate sessions.

For anyone new to the game of Duplicate Bridge, it can be a rather daunting experience to be thrown in “cold” into the game. I know so, as I have been in this predicament myself. I used to sit at the table with heart thumping, wishing that every hand I was dealt with, would be a “No bid” hand. The many numbers of mistakes I made then, and still make, are no longer countable.

But the realisation that making mis takes i s an integra l par t of learning and improving, has been a source of great encouragement,

and consolation.Dup l i ca te B r idge i s no t a s

intimidating as it appears to be, once you have decided to take the plunge. I have never looked back since, as this was the best thing I could have done for my own advancement in this fascinating game.

F o r t h e s e a s o n e d B r i d g e Novices, with a good knowledge of the fundamentals of the game, w e w e l c o m e a n d e n c o u r a g e you to participate in our weekly Duplicate sessions held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1pm in the Card Room.

For members who are interested in joining Esther’s supervised games on Tuesdays from 12pm to 4pm, just call Ms Christine Koh, Manager Sports and Recreation at 66220570. Happy Bridging, All!

DARTS

25

Darts is a game of skill. One needs to develop learning skills, refinement and continual practice to become

a good player of darts. Technical and fundamental skills play an important role. After you develop a comfortable stance, grip, release, and follow-through, you will notice your mental attitude becoming more and more important with increasing levels of play. Darts involve self-mastery and self-control skills. Your personal philosophy of darts is also important. We all tend to judge our dart game against what we believe we should be able to do. If you want to throw better darts, you need to feel good about yourself as you play, and be a part of the team. An important point to remember is your dart game will not remain consistently good unless you practice often. How you practice is, at times, more important than how long you practice.

At The Tanglin Club, the players always enjoy the game of darts, mainly because of the friendly ambience prevailing during play. It is extremely rewarding and motivating to take part in ongoing activities.

The regular monthly friendly competition was held on 6 August 2011. As usual, it was great fun. Every game was fought with lots of enthusiasm.

Congratulations, to all the following winners!

• Highest Score winners were Nancy Chua and Khor Buck Chye • Round-The-Clock winners were Esther Ling, David Goh, Khor Buck Chye and Lillian Lee • Most Bulls Eyes winners were Nancy Chua and MC Cheong• ‘Mickey Mouse’ winners were Nancy Chua, Annette Hartland, Deepa Gupta, Yuji Ono and Lily Lim• ‘Mickey Mouse’ reverse winners were Nancy Chua, Annette Hartland, Deepa Gupta, Yuji Ono and Lily Lim

Flip through most of the health and fitness magazines these days and you will notice the latest “trend” in

core training is all about anti-flexion. The premise of it is that your core plays more important roles to control pelvic alignment, resist extension of the back, and transmitting forces from the lower extremity to the upper extremity. The plank and side plank exercises fall under this category of exercise: thus their popularity recently.

Working with clients and having been a member at a commercial gym, I have observed a lot of people including the front and side planks in their workout. However, they

are often not performing in the most optimal ways to reap the benefits of the exercise.

Let’s look at some of the common occurrences seen with the front and side plank exercises, and how to cue to ensure proper form. Oftentimes, even cueing someone to get into the correct position may not be enough because of the postural adaptations that have occurred over time. For those with such issues, incorporating more pulling exercises in their workout and working on upper spine mobility can help re-establish proper alignment.

Remember; that an exercise is only as effective as how it is being performed, never sacrifice form for more weight.

FITNESS

Doing it Right – Plank & Side Plank

Bad example – Excessive kyphosis, forward head posture.

Front Plank • Chin tucked (like a double chin) to ensure stability through the anterior core while allowing a stabilising

effect through the entire spine.

• Chest up posture to ensure proper stabilising function of both the rectus abdominis and

obliques together.

• Important!: Breathe through the belly to opti-mise diaphragmatic breathing.

Side Plank• Chest up posture still applies.

• Head alignment is back, looking straight ahead with the eyes.

• Hips are all the way through (also make sure shoul-der and hip are not rolled forward or backward).

• Cue to breathe through the belly again while holding this position

Motivated by her own successful weight loss, Hayati embarked

on a rewarding career to be a personal trainer. Having taken her basic exercise course with the Singapore Sports Council, she then went on to pursue courses on the various methodologies of the fitness industry.

In Dec 2009, Hayati got hooked on ‘Girevoy’, also known as kettlebell sport. Four months later, she traveled to Kuala Lumpur and became a cert i f ied Kett lebel l Coach with the International Kettlebell Fitness

Federation under the tutorship of Steve Cotter. In April 2010, Hayati found Crossfit, and six months later she was in Sydney training to be a certified Crossfit Coach.

During this time, Hayati lost more body fat, got stronger and became fitter than ever. Her “so-called genetic pear shaped body” has been replaced by a toned athletic figure, and she has never looked back since.

Her motto: Train functionally, train to be stronger and fitter. Adapt to demands that life has on your body.

I recently came across an interesting article written by strength coach Mike Boyle titled: “Build Anti-Gravity

Muscle”. In it he made an interesting observation:“Gravity is the great enemy of graceful aging. At an

early age, generally in our 20’s, gravity begins to attack and attempts to drag parts of us to the ground. Most of the time, this results in a saggy stomach or butt. As we age, we get shorter, heads fall forward, butts disappear, stomachs protrude and breasts sag. Exercise can help, but sometimes it can actually exacerbate the problem.”

Mike suggested that we focus our training on the areas

we cannot see: namely, upper back, buttocks, and avoiding crunches as these promotes poor postural by pulling the ribs down.

I think his suggestions are great and would like to add that besides strengthening those areas, we need to pay attention to maintaining mobility in those areas (thoracic spine, hips) if we want to avoid the common ailments like shoulders and lower back pain that plague the aging population.

The following exercises are effective in helping you maintain or improve your thoracic and hips mobility. Use them as a warm up or as part of your stretching routine.

Walking Spiderman With One-Arm Overhead Reach• Take a long stride forward into a lunge position.

• In the bottom position, squeeze the glute of the trailing leg and drive the hip towards the ground.

• Reach to the sky with the arm opposite your down leg

• Hold for a count of one-one thousand, and then return to the starting position.

Squat-To-Stand With Extension-Rotation• Bend over to grab the bottom of your feet, and then “pull” yourself into a deep squat position.• As you move into the bottom position, focus on forcing the chest up, pushing the knees out, and keeping the heels down.• Keep your right hand under your foot but raise your left hand up overhead, following it with your eyes. Hold for a count of one-one-thousand.• Bring the left hand back under the left foot, and then repeat on the right side.• From the bottom position, raise the hips back up without letting go of your feet.• Hold this hamstring stretch for a count of one-one-thousand, and then pull yourself back down into the deep squat position.

Gunung Panti Recreational Forest, north of Kota Tinggi in Johor, Malaysia, is a protected secondary forest.

The forest has a hiking trail leading to the highest point at 513m. This trek starts west of Panti by crossing a stream at the beginning, and travelling up along the ridge line through the lush forest to reach the top.

As a general guide, the trek takes about two to three hours to reach the top, and about the same time to descend. Many rare species of flora and fauna can be found here. While the trek is short, the trail is mostly uphill with a climb up a rock cliff, providing the terrain challenges not available at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

Price: $155 per person. For more information and itinerary of this trip, please contact the Gym Manager, Abdul Arziz Kamsani (Arziz) at 66220575.

LAWN BOWLS

The first final of the competition year was decided on the last Sunday of July, when Rodger Kimpton and

Belinda Braggs played Ted Hartland and Phua Swee Leng to establish who would become Drawn Pairs Champions over a match of eighteen ends.

Players’ nerves jangled as they were welcomed onto the green by twenty bowls section supporters eager to witness what was likely to be, to say the least, an interesting match. Why so interesting, you might ask? Your answer could well be in recognition of the difference in experience. On the one hand we had Rodger, who has been playing bowls since the birth of Old Father Time (OFT), partnering Belinda who has only recently taken up the game. Ted and Swee Leng are not exactly brimming over with past honours but they know their way around and are a good balanced pair who, on their day, can upset any apple cart.

Sure enough, and in line with what oftentimes happens, the first end resulted in a maximum which boosted the confidence of Ted and Swee Leng because they were now four points ahead. The impartial gallery cheered, but in doing so probably upset the equilibrium of Ted and Co because two ends later they were trailing by four points to five! The combination of Belinda’s artful skipping and OFT’s skillful leading meant that halfway through the match they led by sixteen points to eight. The second half of the

game was much more balanced with Ted and Swee Leng winning six from nine ends played.

In doing so they were only able to score seven points, whilst OFT and Belinda picked up seven points from the three ends they won. This meant that their lead at half time of eight points remained unsullied, and they emerged as worthy winners by twenty three shots to fifteen. Good on them!

Everyone present enjoyed the after-match refreshments. With seven more finals to come, we are on target for several fun afternoons, so keep in touch to ensure your future bowling enjoyment.

Introduction to Lawn BowlsRegular Introductory Coaching sessions for New Bowlers, are now held on the 3rd Friday of each month. Play from 5pm to 7pm is followed by some section-sponsored refreshments. Advise Tanglin Club Sports reception that you plan to attend. Hope to see you rinkside soon.

SCUBA

Talented underwater photographer; passionate scuba diver; diligent treasurer of the Scuba Section — Helena Chu was all these things to her friends and

dive buddies. But most of all, she will be remembered for her cheerful and caring nature, her infectious enthusiasm in all that she did, and the constant smile on her face.

After qualifying as Sports Diver and later as Dive Leader with the Scuba Section in the mid 1990s, Helena went on to become an Open Water Instructor. Among the earliest underwater photographers in the Section, Helena was soon taking fabulous photographs of sea life that impressed and inspired her friends.

Her passion for the sport took her to exotic dive spots long before they were discovered by the diving community. A trail blazer, she was among the first to dive at sites such as Anilao, Tubbataha, Pueto Galeria and Raja Empat. Many of these expeditions had been recorded in The Tanglin Club Magazine, featuring her words and photographs.

Helena was in fact en route to yet another dive trip when she died tragically in a motor accident.

A pharmacist by profession, Helena was the go-to person during expeditions for almost any ailment. Her dedication as Treasurer of the Scuba Section was immeasurable — meticulous and organized in her annual financial reports, and unfailing in keeping members’ records up to date.

Her dive buddies are deeply saddened and still in shock over her passing. A memorial gathering is being planned on a date to be set. Those interested in attending should email [email protected].

Ladies Racketball The initial coaching session for ladies was successful. The ladies enjoyed it, and by the end of the session, they were able to play matches and have some extended rallies.

Racketball is played on the squash court with larger faced racket and a bigger bouncier ball. It is easy to play, even on your first day, and a good stepping stone to tennis or squash at any age. It is also an option for kids to start hitting a ball. The bouncier ball and surrounding walls enable longer rallies and a good aerobic workout.

If you are interested in playing racketball, please contact the Sports & Recreation Department.

Birthday Bash CelebrationOn Saturday, 6 August, birthday boys and girls of the Tanglin Squash section celebrated their coming of age amongst fellow squash and rugby fans.

Following the doubles and single social, the Beer Garden was bursting at the seams fixated on the All Blacks vs Wallabies Tri-Nations Match. The birthday celebrants were honoured one by one , followed by the ceremonial cutting of the cake and plenty of Chicken Tikka and Tiger to ‘wash it down’.This kept the crowd going through the evening, although there were many comments about “missing buns” (not sure whose they were?). Congratulations to our July/August Birthday Squashers: a wonderful excuse to spend a great afternoon together at the Tanglin Club Squash courts!

Friendly match with the Hollandse Club The inaugural Hollandse Club friendly match saw the Cloggies in orange out in force with over 14 players to their credit. We adopted an ‘accommodate everyone’ style format of play, with handicapping based on SSRA grading. Doubles ties were matched as we went along.

We kept track of the total points tally to award the better side on the evening. To their credit, the Dutch players came out on top with 382 points, and The Tanglin Club trailing with 303 points.

The Tanglin Club may have lost the singles matches but were able to introduce many of our visitors to Jumbo Doubles.

After some initial disorientation, most of the Dutch players really took a shining to the game of doubles. They will no doubt be fielding teams for the Singapore Closed and Presidents Cup: all said and done in a flash of orange! Thanks to the Tanglin players who came out and made the event a success. We’ll get them on the return!

SWIMMING

Featured Swimmer of the MonthJust like any child, Toh Wei Soong has always loved playing

in water, and has been in the pool regularly since he was 6 months old.

Wei Soong is now in Secondary 1, studying at the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent). He likes to play the guitar and is a member of the school’s guitar orchestra. When Wei Soong was 2 years old, he was stricken with a very rare medical condition called Transverse Myelitis that caused him to be unable to walk. In spite of this, Wei Soong started swim training at The Tanglin Club when he was 10 years old. He is very committed and hard working and always gives his best during training. He is an easy going boy and gets along well with his teammates.

In the recent National Para-Swimming Championship, Wei Soong took part in the 100m Freestyle event and won the Gold medal for his age group. What an incredible achievement!

We are very proud of Wei Soong and glad to have him on the swim team. He is a great role model for our younger swimmers.
