Recen t l y I r ece i ved a request from Hibiscus Academy in Umtentweni

for books for their library. I immediately contacted Hibiscus Seconds and within days we delivered two bakkie loads of books to them with more to come. The staff and kids were so thankful. It made me proud to be a Lion. That little bit of effort brought big rewards for the kids and me personally.Guys, the reason I'm telling you this is that we as a club can make a big difference in our community without major projects like the proposed Expo. Smaller projects, with the help of the community and local business make a big impact without straining our resources to b r e a k i n g p o i n t . Partnerships with o t h e r s e r v i c e o r g a n i z a t i o n s s h o u l d a l s o b e investigated and encouraged.It has been said that if we cancel the Expo it will change the fabric of our club. I agree with that statement. But, if we don't make a success of the Expo

it will change the club even m o r e . T h e club will end up with massive debt which will rip the club apart. There are many examples where exactly that has happened.Now is the time for clear and lateral thinking. Do not rush into decisions and think HARD about the consequences. If we commit to the Expo then I urge each and every member and our Ladies to support the effort. We have no option but to succeed.

he Club’s “roll up” projects advertising banners have been totally revamped and now proudly advertise our latest community

Tservice projects. These handy double sided banners retract into a zip up bag and are very ease to transport and erect at projects and fundraisers. Our contributing public are now able to identify with the core service projects of the Port Shepstone

he Annual Cansa Relay For Life was held on

TSaturday 1st February at the Norwegian Settlers sports field in Marburg. The event,

which is supported by various local companies and service/charity organisations was well supported and participants took part in the relay, tributes to those lost to cancer and the various other activities which were ongoing from 5pm until 5am on Sunday 2nd February. A group of Sheppie Lions, Lion Ladies and kids participated and remained throughout the night to show their support. Well done to Lion Gary Vogt for organising the Sheppie Lions stand and to all members who showed their support for this very worthy cause.

One person can make a difference! In 1985, one man decided he had to do something to stop the endless pain, suffering and loss due to cancer. He decided to raise funds for his local American Cancer Society, by doing

something he enjoyed – running marathons. He spent an incredible 24 hours running around a track – a gruelling feat, but representative of what someone fighting cancer endures. He asked for the support of people he knew and raised $27 000 USD.

While he circled the track, he thought about how others could take part. He envisaged a 24 hour team relay event that would raise money for the fight against cancer. Dr. Gordy Klatt’s determination was contagious and the following year he tapped into networks of friends, family and associates to raise funds and Relay For Life was born. No longer a one-man show, Relay For Life events now involve entire communities with a mutual goal to eradicate cancer.

Today, Relay For Life is a recognisable brand worldwide, with 20 countries celebrating the lives saved from cancer; remembering those lost and those fighting back… Relay For Life is the largest cancer engagement and fundraising activity in the world!

Relay in South Africa

Relay For Life is a unique event that offers everyone in your community the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. It represents the HOPE that all of those lost to cancer will never be forgotten; that those who are fighting cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

Relay For Life embraces entire communities; from the very young to the old. Teams raise funds before and during the Relay and these funds are dedicated to funding CANSA’s unique, integrated service within your community.

Relay For Life has taken South Africa by storm and in the past year 57 communities participated in Relay For Life events across South Africa. This year over 100 communities will participate in this amazing overnight event.

Activities at Relay

Relay For Life teams (10 to 15 members) take turns to walk or run around a track for 12 to 24 hours. The goal is to keep one team member on the track at all times, as cancer never sleeps.

Participants enjoy camping-out, entertainment, good food, games and community camaraderie. They all share a common purpose – their desire to help CANSA fight cancer and to support those affected by cancer.

members from our other 3 districts.

n order to facilitate the appropriate training of future leaders for our respective districts, a Regional Lions ILeadership Institute was held in Wellington in the Western Cape during the month of January 2014. This

Institute, which is funded by Lions Clubs International and the 4 districts within our Multiple District is the

second one if it’s kind to be held during the past two years. Unfortunately it will be some time before another

course will be held here in our Multiple District. Members of the Port Shepstone Lions Club have attended both of

these institutes, namely Lion Andre Beneke in 2013 and 1VDG Martin Rundle in 2014. This training course is

presented by our very own Multiple District Global Leadership Team and course presenters included PCC Cliff

Hocking (410-B), PCC Wally Smith (410-D), PDG Paula Lang (410-A), PDG Nick Mare (410-B) and DC Beaulieu

Mare (410-B). The course was, once again a tremendous success and those who attended have been well trained

and equipped with the knowledge to eventually become effective District leaders within their respective Districts.

Lvisited St Johns, an island off the east coast of Newfoundland in Canada during December to

see their new 3 month old granddaughter, Charlotte for the first time. Their son Kyle and daughter-in-law Andrea have lived in this part of the world for a number of years. True to his word, Al promised to send us a pic of him braaiing, South African style regardless of the weather which was a rather cool -10º for most of their stay! Al also visited with PDG Sam Wells who is a member of the local St John’s Lions Club, a club of 65 members which was chartered in 1948. Their District, 41-N4 is regarded as one of the smaller districts in Canada with around 50 clubs.
