t's getting close to the end of

Imy year which seems to have flown by so quickly.

We are all getting ready for convention in East London. We will all be travelling down in my bus and the youngsters – David and Brian – have conned us into going a day early to party on the Wednesday night. So before the convention even starts we will be going great guns. Hopefully the old ballies can keep up.

Sadly we attended Pietie's farewell at the Curnow's home last week. Although it's sad for the club to be losing our “dad” we wish P ie t ie and Joey everything of the best for their temporary move. They will be spending time with their children in various parts of the world. We look forward to their return in a couple of years.

Welcome back to Mike “Harry” Heathcote. Mike is back from France for 5 months. My main concern is my liver. Need I say more?

It's great to have Laurie back as a member after experiencing other clubs over the past few years. A big welcome to Laurie.

Our incoming President Andre has set up his team for his year and its exciting to see that some new and younger members have been chosen for the various portfolios. We look forward to the new and fresh ideas.

Our show plans are going very well with lots of new additions. One very exciting addition is the Miss Lions Beauty Contest. There has been an amazing response to this project and we have already organised some excellent prizes. T h e c o n t e s t w i l l i n c l u d e contestants from age 3 up to 25 in four categories.

Our monthly functions and projects all ran smoothly as usual thanks to all our enthusiastic members with their various areas of expertise. I am eternally grateful to the members for their dedication, giving their time to help our recipients.

Our Club’s new friendship banners have finally arrived. The banners were designed by PDG Denis Meyer and manufactured by Lion Mike Peniston of the Shelly Beach Lions Club. The banners reflect one of Port Shepstone’s most famous landmarks, the lighthouse which was installed on 10th March 1905 and is currently still operational. This lighthouse is situated at the mouth of the Umzimkulu River. It was developed out of a signal station, which was used during the time that Port Shepstone was an operating Harbour. The lighthouse is equipped with a radio beacon and is fully automatic. It is run off the mains supply and has two standby diesel / alternator sets. The view in the background is of the suburb of Umtentweni where our Lions’ Den is located and where most of our members reside.

In November 2011, Lion Carl Van Blerk and the Eden Lions Club from George in the Western Cape introduced “Melvin Mascot” to Lionism in Multiple District 410,

Southern Africa. The mascot is named after the founding member of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones.

Since his introduction, Melvin has become an instant celebrity with both Lions and the communities that we serve. The sheer excitement that is experienced when both adults and children come face to face with Melvin is testimony of this excellent initiative.

Earlier this year, The Port Shepstone Lion’s Show Committee decided to purchase a m a s c o t p r i m a r i l y f o r entertainment purposes at the

Show, however, Melvin is proving to be a big hit wherever he goes!

Our youngest (and bravest!) Lion, David De Jong (photo right) has been appointed as Melvin’s “handler” and has accepted this responsibility with great enthusiasm. Despite the fact that the outfit is extremely hot, especially in our humid climate, David wears it for long periods of time and loves to interact with people of all ages. His outstanding dancing skills have also contributed to the instant success of our local Melvin. Melvin will be a regular feature at our future fundraising and service projects.

he 2013 Harley Davidson “Africa

TBike Week” held from 26-29 April in Margate was, once again a

r esound ing success . L i t e ra l l y thousands of bikers from all over South Africa and beyond participated. The traditional “Mass Ride” started on the rooftop parking of Shelly centre in Shelly Beach and once again, Shelly Beach Lions were there to provide delicious breakfast rolls for the thousands of bikers and spectators and raise funds for charity. A few Sheppie Lions together with Melvin the Lion went along to support their neighbours and join in the fun.

Wayne Newby fried plenty of bacon for the Club’s

delicious breakfast rolls that eventually sold out.

Plenty of money was raised by these dedicated

Lions and their Ladies for Charity.

Here in the Sheppie Lions Club we have own version of Harley Davidson - and they provide just as much entertainment!!These local legends keep rolling on and on!

Port Shepstone Lions’ Annual Golf Day, held on Friday 26th April at the Port Shepstone Country Club, was hailed as a fantastic success. All credit must go to our main sponsors,

Illovo Sugar, all other hole and prize sponsors, Project Convener, Lion Gary Vogt and his committee for organising and running this successful fundraiser. A net profit of R40 000-00 was raised for charity.

As per usual, loads of fun was had along the course, especially at hole no. 8 which is traditionally sponsored by Curnow Garrun Insurance Group. Players who reached this hole were treated to braai meat and shooters and none were let off the hook! They also ran a fundraiser in aid of South Coast Hospice.

The highlight of the day was a hole-in-one on the 8th hole by veteran left-hander, Phil Myburgh. Lion Mervin Curnow, who has been sponsoring this hole for many years now was thrilled that someone had finally scored an ace. A very happy Phil walked away with R1000-00 in prize money courtesy of Curnow Garrun.

Winners of the competition were Ryan Keys, Keegan Reddy, George Raman and Sagren Pillay (bottom left photo).

During the prize giving, Illovo Sugar representative, Marketing Manager Darrell De Wet and project convener Gary Vogt handed over a donation to the value of R29500-00 to Lion President Jean Masson (photo left).

Lion Mervin Curnow (below) also auctioned a printer kindly sponsored by Leaf Technologies which also raised a princely sum of money.

This very enjoyable event was rounded off with a sheep on the spit b raa i and DJ, L i o n P e t e Stoppe l ’s foo t tapping and very e n t e r t a i n i n g m u s i c w h i c h i n c l u d e d h i s t r a d e m a r k song”Ag Pleez Daddy!”

A n o t h e r successful Golf Day in the bag - we are already looking forward to next year’s one!

n Friday 19th April a special “Bon Voyage” party was hosted

Oby Lion Mervin & Lion Lady Lyn Curnow for Lion Pietie and Lion Lady Joey Van Niekerk at their Umtentweni home. Pietie

& Joey will be away for up to two years visiting with their son in Canada and daughter in Cape Town. The party was very well attended by members of the Sheppie Lions Club.

As is customary with a visit to Mervin’s pub, Mervin once again mixed his special concoctions with the efficiency of a qualified pharmacist which resulted in many members cursing him the following day! Oom Pietie also entertained us all with a final rendition of his now famous “Ahab The Arab”. We wish them a wonderful journey and look forward to their safe return to our family of Lions.

n Saturday 13th April, our local

OMoth Shellhole hosted a very successful Food, Wine & Beer

tasting Festival. A few “brave” Sheppie Lions and their families went along to support them. The shellhole has undergone a major revamp and is now a superb venue. Well done to the Moths - the event was very enjoyable and they raised much needed funding for their clubhouse.
