Our club is proving to be very popular with five people having expressed interest in

joining. There is no doubt that this is due to our camaraderie, friendship and the services that we provide to our community. It is vital that we include our new prospects in all our activities and fellowship. We must also include them on our mailing lists and send a copy of our newsletter to them as well. The sponsors must play an active role in ensuring that the prospects feel welcome and part of the family that is Port Shepstone Lions. Ex-Lions and non-active Lions should be contacted and brought back to the action. We are also moving forward with the possibility of establishing a branch club in Port Edward and our first Lions Information meeting was held at the Old Pont.

Our convener for the new look Lions Fundraiser is Lion Kelvin Hulley. Please support h im wi th th is challenging task. He will convene his first meeting soon.

The first Zone Meeting and Lions Bingo took place on the same day which called for some fancy footwork. As usual it just happened, thanks to all who helped make the day a success.

Lion Lady Sandy Heathcoat’s 60th birthday party held at the club was also a huge success.

T h e B l i n d B o w l e r s c o m p e t i t i o n and Leadership Retreat is upon us and lots of manpower/Lady Power (or just LION POWER) is needed to make these events successful.

The first week in September is eye care week and we will once again contribute to the gift of sight for twelve patients, two of whom are completely blind. Our sincere thanks to the Professionals and Hospitals involved in making this project a success.

My friends, in conclusion, please offer your support and skills to ensure the success o f our endeavors.Have a wonderful month.

NEWS FLASH....SNARES !!!

Johnny Guy found 18 snares on his farm off Rethman Drive and surrounding area this week and has brought it to our attention. See actual photo below of a duiker caught in a snare and local dogs attacked it. What an agonizing, horrific death!! Unfortunately the dogs got there first!!I have contacted Craig Hosken from Crag's View Wild Care Centre (please google and see the purpose and passion of these people). He is prepared to come to Tweni on the 7th September at 9:00am to train and assist us in finding snares in the bush. We need as many people to come and join us as we are losing more animals to poachers than we realise. Meet on the corner of Rethman Drive and Stapleton Road at 8.30am. We will be having a bring and braai afterwards. The Conservancy will pay Craig his expenses but if you would like to make a donation to his organisation it would be greatly appreciated. If you cannot attend but wish to contribute, please pay into the Conservancies Nedbank Account. No. 2398113744 Branch Code 198765 and mark it with the reference “Snares”. We will then pay over to Crags View.

All are welcome and we hope to see you there.......... This photo was taken by Alex and Johnny at 3am after itwas heard crying. Unfortunately the dogs got there first!!

Port Shepstone Lions once again hosted the National Assoc ia t i on o f B l i nd

Bowlers Tournament which was held at the Uvongo Bowling Club during the weekend on 31 August/1st September. A number of blind bowlers travelled down to the South Coast to participate in this annual tournament. Port Shepstone Lions became involved with the NABB - National Association of Blind Bowlers (KZN Region) in 1981 during the "Year of the Disabled". The annual weekend tournament means a great deal to the blind bowlers and for the past 32 years the Port Shepstone Lions have sponsored the competition. Apart from the

games, the weekend includes accommodation and meals. The Port Shepstone Lion Ladies provided and served dinner on the Saturday evening. The Club is indebted to their main sponsor, National Braiding Industries as well as Spec Savers, Port Shepstone and Key Software for providing sponsorship for this event. During his opening speech, Club President Lion Andre Beneke paid tribute to the sponsors as well as to Lion Hans Wagenaar who, for the past 27 years, has single handedly organised and run this event. Lion Hans was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation as well as a Lions 25 years long service award pin by Lion President Andre.

Port Shepstone Lions hosted their second Annual Schools Talent Competition at the 2013 Lions Show. The finals of the competition were held in the main entertainment tent during the morning of Sunday 30th June at the showgrounds. A total of 13 entries from 5 local High schools, namely Creston College, Marburg Secondary, Port Shepstone High School, South City College and Hoerskool

Suid Natal participated. They all provided the delighted audience with an array of music, song and dance routines. This was a truly enjoyable experience for those who attended and it was clear that the participants had dedicated a great deal of time and effort into their respective performances.

The event was organised by Cindy Allen & Lion Lady Bondi Horsley and the MC for the morning was Lion Lady Anita Hulley.

After much deliberation, Judges Elvie Venter, Ria Hackland, Idols finalist Tenda Mavundla and Jay Beekman finally selected the following winners :

1st Prize – Port Shepstone High School, 2nd Prize – Hoerskool Suid Natal, 3rd Prize – Marburg Secondary School.

The Port Shepstone High School winners, Thobeka Shozi and Nthabiseng Zondi entered as "Kiffmatic" and performed a very entertaining hip hop dancing act.

The winning prize of a brand new colour lazer printer sponsored by Leaf Technologies was handed over by their Regional Director, Danie Van Tonder to School Principal Mr Peter Mc Killen last Wednesday. Also present at the handover were Port Shepstone Lions Club President Andre Beneke, organisers, Cindy Allen and Bondi Horsley and the school's contestants. The organisers are grateful to sponsors Leaf Technologies, 2 the T Marketers, The Beekman Group, Coca Cola, Harbourview Superspar, Luckys, Manaba Spar, South Coast Mall, Superbodies, Surf Boys, Tightline Fisheries, Vidicom and Waltons Stationary for their support of this annual event.

Photo left : Community Services Director Lion Jeff Smith hands over a wheelchair to young Lindelani who suffers from cerebral palsy. For years now Lindelani had to be carried around by his parents. This is his very first wheelchair and he was delighted at the prospect of being able to have some independance. His mother was equally delighted by this kind and generous donation.

Dear Denis,

Once again your magazine was a joy to read! My you do have such good looking members in your club! You all certainly get

Lothar Frey passed away at the age of 55 after

losing a very courageous battle against cancer.

His children, Clinton, Nicholas, Roxanne and

Geoffrey described him as their hero and role model

and all said that they would mostly miss the fun and

laughter that they shared with him.

Lothar was a successful businessman and chicken

farmer, based in Port Shepstone. His kindness and

generosity towards his community was legendary.

Lothar was a true friend to the Port Shepstone Lions

Club and supported many of the club’s community

service projects over a number of years.

For the past few years, Lothar has allowed the club to

utilise his farm as part of the “Amazing Race” course

which forms part of the Annual Leadership Retreat.

One of the challenges related to this course is the

packing of frozen chickens inside a freezer room on the farm - a firm favourite with the attendees.

Lothar’s greatest and kindest contribution was his support of our annual Senior Citizens’ Christmas Luncheon. For a number

of years now, Lothar has generously sponsored approximately 100 Christmas gifts for the oldies, each to the value of R150-

00. Lothar was always adamant that he did not want to receive recognition for this, however, the club insisted on awarding

him with a Louis Halse Fellowship Award in 2010.

His life was an inspiration to us all and his memory will be a benediction. Rest in Peace dear friend........

Salute!

(Lion Pieter Van Niekerk, Lothar Frey and Lion (Dr) Hilton Horsley)

In late 2011 an article about the Born Free Foundation's 'Pride of Cape Town” appeared in the local media. Following email correspondence and a meeting with their international

coordinator from the UK they accepted a proposed that Lions District 410A should become involved.

The Born Free Foundation, now a registered NPO in this country, was founded over 40 years ago in the UK. Its' mission is simply to rescue wild animals from captivity and repatriate them to the wild.

On the KZN South Coast, rescued animals are returned to Crag’s view in Port Edward.

The “Pride Project” has been successfully held in other capital cities and involves commercial concerns and caring individuals each sponsoring a nearly two metre long 10kg fibreglass Lion model. Then each Lion is decorated following submission of a design proposal and motivation to Born Free, UK. Not only is it a unique marketing exercise but it also raises much needed funds

as each Lion is sponsored from the outset and then auctioned.

South African sponsors paid R30000 for each Lion whilst District 410A paid half ie R15000 as a contribution to a rather different environmental project. In addition, they received 25% of the auction price of their Lion whereas other sponsors receive nothing back.

With thirty Lions placed throughout the V & A Waterfront for five weeks it was interesting to see the different designs produced by local artists. From a red Coca Cola Lion to a golden King of the Beasts complete with crown. A lot of thought went into many of the designs.

A chance encounter at a “Stop Hunger Now” meeting resulted in internationally acclaimed artist Riaan van Zyl of Kalk Bay unhesitatingly accepting the invitation to create a design and decorate the Lion of Lions. Given the internationalism of Lionism, the Born Free Foundation and the animal itself it was agreed to design our Lion with maps of the world.

On further discussion the idea of a Roaring Lion was developed and this sound activated design was approved by the organisers. Apart from finding old maps at second hand shops in his area Riaan had to use lots of white glue, brushes, acrylic paint, lacquer and thinners all sponsored by Jack's Paint and Hardware, Edgemead.

This painstaking process involved hundreds of hours to complete apart from the local and international administration and management. Once decorated the Lion was delivered to Progressive Electronics of Goodwood for the coin slot mechanism and speakers to be fitted. As this was a pioneering project there were a few unforeseen hitches which were soon ironed out and the Roaring Lion of 410A was active, raising R650 in donations on the first day.

An excellent initiative - well done!!

On 17th August, the Port Shepstone Lions’ Den played host to Lion Lady

S a n d y H e a t h c o t e ’ s 6 0 t h Birthday surprise party. And it was a surprise - Sandles had no idea! The event was a huge success and very well attended by Lions, family and friends. Lion Ladies Myrna Masson, Anita Hulley and their helpers turned the board room into a 60's theme dance hall together with LP records, peace signs and plenty of atmosphere. Lion Alastair Warman braaied the meat and Lion Denis Meyer provided music. Great fun was had by all and the proceeds will go towards the club’s administration fund.

n Friday 30th August a membership drive was held at the Old Pont Holiday Resort in Port

OEdward with the aim of forming a Club Branch in the area. Despite the very cold and rainy weather, 6 locals made the effort to attend. PDG Denis Meyer showed an interesting Lions

recruitment video an gave a talk on Lionism. The gathering was well supported by the Sheppie Clan with Lions Kevin Ross, Jeff Smith, Jean Masson, Martin Rundle, Wayne Skinner, Andre Beneke and Mike Davidson travelling there and supporting this great initiative. All the visitors expressed an interest in joining Lionism and a second organisational meeting will be held in the near future.

heir marriage was good, their dreams focused.. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see Tthem now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress; lawn mower in his hand,

and dish-towel in hers.. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door,

the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep.

It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, eating, renewing, I wanted just once

to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more.

But then my mother died, and on that clear summer's night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck

with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all

used up and goes away ...never to return. So ..While we have it ...its best we love it ... And care for it .... And

fix it when it's broken ... And heal it when it's sick.

This is true ...For marriage ... And old cars ... And children with bad report cards ... Dogs and cats with bad

hips ... And aging parents ... And grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins...brothers, sisters and friends. We

keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it.

Some things we keep. Like a best friend who moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just

some things that make life important, like people we know who are special ... And so, we keep them close in

heart and mind and spirit.

Good friends are like stars ... you don't always see them, but you know they are always there.

(A special dedication to my wonderful friends in the Sheppie Lions Club - PDG Denis Meyer)
