1 Background and Objectives

Back in 2011 IFEMA and Diversity Consulting International® began their collaboration

when creating Fitur Gay (LGBT) in the framework of the Madrid International Tourism Fair

- Fitur.

Fitur Gay (LGBT) was created with the aim of accommodating on one side – and

normalizing and giving visibility on the other, a market segment as important as LGBT,

which encompasses 10% of tourists worldwide and generates 16% of the total tourism

expenditure, well above average.

With no lack of difficulties, Fitur Gay (LGBT) has become a benchmark of LGBT Tourism

fairs worldwide. In the first six editions, hundreds of institutions, tourism companies,

professionals and media have visited the fair and its laureate Forum of Conferences,

Papers, Debates and Events and have found an unbeatable meeting point for business

making, exchanging impressions, learning, teaching. But above all for demonstrating that

the LGBT is not only a tremendously lucrative market segment, but also a very powerful

tool for normalizing the LGBT collective worldwide, serving as a catalyst for social change.

Destinations that welcome LGBT

tourism, experience a significant

increase in social acceptance

and vice versa – those who

materialize this acceptance in

equality, experience a huge

increase in tourism inflow, greatly

benefiting those destinations.

The work and achievements of Fitur Gay (LGBT) was bestowed an extraordinary reward

with the grant of the IGLTA Honors Award in the category of Best Networking Event at the

2016 IGLTA World Convention in Cape Town, South Africa.

2 History

Due to the success, prominence and consideration of Fitur Gay (LGBT) as a benchmark

of the LGBT tourism industry worldwide, back in 2014 the organizers of the fair decided to

create the Diversity Consulting International ® - Fitur Gay (LGBT) Awards with the

objective to recognize institutions, people, destinations, companies and media that

undertake unique and outstanding endeavors to support the promotion of LGBT tourism

throughout.

Thus we’ve held two editions of the Awards in the past two editions of Fitur Gay (LGBT),

2015 and 2016 - http://www.fiturgaylgbt.com/premios-dci-fitur-gay-lgbt/

3 Organización Mundial de Turismo de Naciones Unidas

(UNWTO) and IGLTA

Given the resounding success and great international recognition of Fitur Gay (LGBT) one

could think that the road has been easy and without complications. Nothing is further

from reality. Since its inception, Fitur Gay (LGBT) had to overcome countless obstacles

and prejudices, from institutions, businesses and even the LGBT collective itself. Having

said that, it has also had the privilege of having invaluable supports from visionaries who

understood that normalization and social inclusion is also achieved through

standardization in other aspects such as tourism.

These difficulties and support in equal parts, give the organizers of Fitur Gay (LGBT) a

special sensitivity in the evaluation of the efforts that different personages, companies,

institutions and destinies carry out in the different areas of the normalization of the LGBT

segment through the promotion of tourism.

The UNWTO, has accompanied and supported Fitur Gay (LGBT) from the very first edition

of Fitur Gay (LGBT) 7 years ago, a support that began with a beautiful speech by Mr.

Javier Blanco and words of encouragement from Mr. Marcio Favilla when Fitur Gay was

just starting. This wonderful cooperation has continued ever since with countless members

of the UNWTO, and remarkably through Mrs. Yolanda Perdomo. All this has undoubtedly

contributed to the dissemination of the event, its growth and development into the world

reference it is today.

UNWTO's constant awareness and support to the LGBT population, and the importance

it has given over the years to the inseparable relationship between TOURISM and social

advancements, was reflected in the groundbreaking Global Report on LGBT Tourism, a

joint research document that was developed together with the IGLTA back in 2012. Fitur

Diversity Consulting International ® Confidential page 10 de 12

Gay (LGBT) had the privilege to host in its Auditorium the official presentation of the report

by Mr. Márcio Favilla L. de Paula.

The restless motivation of the UNWTO General Secretariat to involve the teams under its

direction to handle LGBT as a segment of the population and tourism industry on its own

right, has not gone unnoticed by the organization of the Diversity Consulting

International® - Fitur Gay (LGBT) Tourism Awards.

Nor has the excellent work – once again in cooperation with the IGLTA – in developing a

second joint LGBT Tourism Report, reflecting dozens of case studies that are writing the

history of the LGBT Tourism Industry worldwide.

It is needless to say that the IGLTA is one of the most relevant world references in every

significant area of the LGBT Tourism Industry. From education, development and

networking to promotion and research. IGLTA is also the first gay organization who

became an Affiliate Member of the UNWTO.

The cooperation between these two organizations may seem today as the obvious thing

to do. But it had to be done. The visionary cooperative approach of the management

of these two major “institutions” of the tourism industry has led to greatly increase the

awareness and visibility of the LGBT tourism segment throughout the world, in the public

sector, private companies, professionals and media, both within and outside of the

tourism industry. And that is yet more important, it has significantly added to the

normalization and acceptance of the LGBT community worldwide through hard work

and communication day after day.

Award – Category Institutional Cooperation

It was an obvious choice to publicly recognize in such a remarkable forum, the 7th Edition

of Fitur Gay (LGBT) at the Madrid International Tourism Fair, and in such a relevant

moment, the year of the Madrid World Pride, the great effort and excellent results of the

long lasting cooperation between the UNWTO and the IGLTA.

Thus, we are happy and honored to announce that the Diversity Consulting

International® - Fitur Gay (LGBT) 2016 Award in the Category of Institutional Cooperation

has been granted to the UNWTO and the IGLTA.

The Award Ceremony Will take place on January 18th, 2017 in the Fitur Gay (LGBT)

Auditorium (3A14), located in Hall 3 (the Americas Pavilion) of Feria de Madrid (IFEMA)

from 15:30 to 16:30. During the ceremony, two Awards will be given – one to a

representative of the UNWTO and the other to a representative of the IGLTA.
