Much to celebrate As another year draws to a close, it’s easy to take for granted all that has happened in 2016. Which is why evenings like Chagiga are so important. They allow us to reflect on and appreciate all that our students have experienced, been challenged by and ultimately achieved over the course of the school year.

With a theme of Unity, Chagiga 2016 allowed students to demonstrate what they are capable of when we all work together. Our musicians, dancers, actors, student leaders, community service volunteers, athletes, artists and academic achievers were celebrated and acknowledged in front of the entire Lew Family Secondary School.

The Scopus App is here! The Mount Scopus Memorial College App is an exciting new development that will streamline and simplify communication with our parents.

Parents choose the information they need, receiving only relevant notices, upcoming events, and newsletters. They can also contact relevant College personnel directly

with just a few clicks, and access various parent resources quickly and easily. Parents can access all information via their smart device (iPhone, iPad or Android) from one central point.

In addition to the Scopus App, the College will be implementing CareMonkey – an innovative parent-controlled electronic student medical and consent form application for schools.

Smorgon Family Primary School Year 4 teacher, Rachel Johnson, has made history for all students at Jewish schools. For the first time in 65 years of the popular schools competition Science Talent Search, Rachel was able to organise an additional judging day, held on a Thursday,

for Jewish school students unable to attend the main state judging day on a Saturday, due to Shabbat.

The Science Talent Search, an investigative project, was undertaken by a group of 11 Year 4 students. They were joined by teams from Bialik College and The King David School. The theme of this year’s competition was ‘Drones, Droids and Robots’. Our students received a number of awards and medals for their entries and we congratulate all students on their creativity and ingenuity.

From the Principal

The last term of the year is the time for school camp for a number of different year groups. Whereas camps for Years 9 and 10 are dedicated to informal education, on the broad themes of Zionism and Jewish identity, the trips for Years 4, 5, 7 and 8 provide opportunities for a variety of outdoor activities. An overnight stay for Year 3 students to introduce them to being away from home and our Year 6 students’ exploration of Canberra and the institutions of our nation’s capital (in Term 1) complete the offering.

These camps create a ‘school away from school’ environment and combine the best elements of Scopus life with a youth group-type experience. After a hard day’s activity, they come back to base for fun programs created by our informal staff, ably assisted by madrichim (youth leaders) drawn from the secondary school, who themselves are learning from their first moments of leadership.

Camps also enable staff and students to know each other in a different context (such as seeing a Principal sail over a lake attached to a flying fox), but even more crucially the camp experience connects students to each other. The intensity of the program, the shared living spaces, and the encouragement of the staff all encourage students to move outside their immediate social circle, to spend time with others whom they previously did not know, and to form new bonds of friendship that last long beyond camp – sometimes for a lifetime. In this way, our camps build character and build the Scopus community.

Maths minds, Chinese literacyOur students placed 2nd in their category (based on school size) in the worldwide Education Perfect Maths Championships 2016. With students from over 20 countries taking part, our students faced competitors from 1638 schools in China, USA, New Zealand, England, Hong Kong, Vietnam, India and France.

Students from Years 7-10 answered Maths questions online and earned points for each correct answer. Across the globe students answered over nine million Maths problems during the week of the competition.

Scopus’ 426 competitors scored 74,118 points across a range of Maths topics which complemented coursework taught in class.

In a similar online competition, 90% of our Year 8 Chinese language students participated in the 2016 Victorian Chinese Language Competition. Mount Scopus College students achieved the number one ranking amongst the schools having fewer than 50 students enrolled in learning the Chinese language.

Year 7 students, Tara Givoni, Amy Gordon and Abby Feldman compete in the Education Perfect Maths Championships

Ulpan experience

In recent weeks over 94% of our Year 10 students have departed for the College’s optional Ulpan programs in Israel and Prague. This year saw a record 17 students take part in the nine week program, where they spent the first four weeks living and learning in Jerusalem, with intensive Hebrew language classes and activities at two local high schools.

In early December they were joined by their peers on the five week program to enjoy exploring Israel from top to bottom. The program now includes a unique three day experience where students choose between volunteering in the Arava region, hiking the southern part of the Israel National Trail in the Negev on the Shvil option or exploring social justice by spending time with Magen David Adom in Tel Aviv.

We wish all our Ulpaniks an enriching and rewarding time in Eretz Israel and thank our wonderful benefactors who have made this program possible for every student who wished to take part.

SnowSports champions

Our SnowSports team recorded its best result in recent years, winning the overall Primary trophy and finishing second in the Secondary division, to claim the Overall Event Champions title at the Australian Jewish Interschool SnowSports Championships.

The Scopus SnowSports team of 34 students included skiers and snowboarders from Years 3 to 11. The interschool championships are held at Mt Buller in early August each year.

Thank you

The College wishes to express its sincere appreciation for the invaluable counsel and pro bono legal services provided by

Arnold Bloch Leibler.

120 Years of teaching

Students, parents, Old Collegians, current and past staff came together to honour three exceptional Mount Scopus staff members, as they celebrated over 120 years of combined outstanding service.

Claire Gescheit, Tony McCartney and Frank Pocervina each reminisced about their early teaching careers at Scopus. They shared their insights and a number of lively anecdotes as each reflected on the part they had played in shaping the hearts and minds of thousands of students over four decades.

From the immense changes they have witnessed both in teaching practice and in the way the school has grown and developed, to their personal recollections of past Scopus headmasters, it was a wonderful evening shared by three Scopus legends. We sincerely thank Claire, Tony and Frank for their ongoing contributions.

Cambodia

Implemented in 2009, the Cambodia Community and Service Program has grown in both size and scope. This year saw a record 36 students and four staff embarked on a journey with the mandate to ‘make change happen’, and that is exactly what they did. Starting with the 1000 Steps fundraising challenge and culminating with nine days in Cambodia to work with local villages and schools, Cambodia Team 2016 made a difference to the local communities as well as to their own personal growth.

Sharing their s’machot

Mazal Tov and thank you to Dylan Hershan, Taisa Gold and Olivia Baron who all generously directed donations to Mount Scopus College on the occasion of their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs.

Farewell and toda rabaAt this time each year we say goodbye and thank you to staff who are leaving the College.

After an incredible 42 years of outstanding service we bid farewell to Tony McCartney. Tony began his teaching career at Scopus as a Maths teacher, going on to become Head of Maths, then Level Co-ordinator, Deputy Headmaster – Curriculum and Instruction, Deputy Headmaster – Student Services and more recently Extension and Enrichment Co-ordinator, and has influenced the lives of generations of Scopus students.

We also said thank you to Naomi Alter, primary Hebrew and Jewish Studies teacher after 31 amazing years, and Rosie Gingold after 20 dedicated years as both a classroom and special education teacher. Besen Family Performing Arts Centre Theatre Technician, Brad Alcock left us after 16 years and VCE English teacher, Julie Shields after 14 years and we thank them both for their wonderful service. Suzanne Slomoi leaves the role of Learning Support Teacher after 14 years and Elena Aront, the role of Aftercare Assistant at Gandel Besen House after 12 years and we thank them also. Lani Brayer, VET Hebrew Applied Languages Co-ordinator and former Hebrew Immersion Program Co-ordinator leaves after 12 years and Allason McNamara, Maths Faculty Leader after 10 years, and we are grateful to them both for the impact they have had on our students’ lives.

The entire Scopus family is grateful for the dedication of all staff and wishes those leaving the very best in their future endeavours.

Please update your detailsAs the College launches its Grandparents and Friends Club and will also be enhancing its alumni programs, it is even more important to update your contact details so that you receive invitations and stay fully informed. Please email Jenny Stosser, [email protected] or complete and return the flysheet that came with this Kaleidoscope.

Yorta Yorta Beyachad

Year 9 students with an interest in Indigenous culture participated in the Yorta Yorta Beyachad trip, in partnership with Stand Up. Students visited sites sacred to the Yorta Yorta people in the Barmah forest in northern Victoria, learnt about the turtle dreaming at Gallery Kaiela in Shepparton, and paid their respects at the grave of human rights leader Sir Doug Nichols in Cummeragunja, NSW. They met a number of descendants of William Cooper, an elder of the Yorta Yorta nation who has been honoured by Yad Vashem for his courageous protest in 1938 after Kristallnacht.

The students returned with a keen interest and passion for sharing the stories of pride and connection to country they heard from the First Australians.

Scopus FlashbackWith the help of the Helen Synman Archive, Year 12 student Casey Levy created a fusion photograph reflecting the College’s ‘transformation in the last 60 years’ as a final submission for her Media Studies folio.

Casey, whose parents and grandmother are Old Collegians, was inspired by her family’s connection to the College. She captured the intergenerational concept by taking a selfie – a symbol of modern technology, which she used as the contrast to items of significance from the school’s past.

The Archive has developed a comprehensive collection and welcomes all enquiries and research requests. We also gratefully accept donations of photos and College memorabilia. Located in the former LM Stanton Kindergarten in Milford Ave, adjacent to the Gandel Campus, the Archives are open Wednesdays 10am-4pm. The College is grateful for the photographic services and ongoing support of Jeff Joseph of Cha Cha Cha Photography throughout 2016.

We also sincerely thank the Saben and Shapiro families of Print Dynamics for their continued support.

The Parents’ Association has capped off a very busy year with a number of activities in the last six months. These include the regular Challah sales, tuck shop and lunch orders and Chagim support at both FKI and GBH, Bar/Bat Mitzvah registry, class convenors, movie morning, Helping Hand program, footy tipping competition, and new initiatives including the Scopus babysitting list, CSG parent bus stop training, introducing a healthy eating policy and the mango fundraising drive.

Father’s Day StallWith fantastic support from our generous donors, the Stalls committee of Elise Cook, Penny Small and Natalie Weisz and led by Deborah Zipper, packed and sold over 1,650 gifts to students from Kinder to Year 6. Great support by many volunteers helped make our Stalls one of our major fundraising activities for the year.

Shabbat Project LuncheonOver 175 families came together on Saturday 12 November as ‘one College, one Family, one Shabbat’ to participate in the inaugural Shabbat Project luncheon held in the Arnold Bloch Memorial Hall at Gandel Besen House. The committee of Elyse Schachna, Natasha Mymin, Alana Szylit, Helen Apelbaum and Nicci Kabbani are to be commended for this worthy and uplifting event, which we hope will become an annual activity on the College calendar.

The event was proudly sponsored by Timbermate Group, 5 Squared, Kabbani family, Friday Florista, Hocking Stuart, Ice Events, The Production House, Cobs and Kosher Kingdom and we thank them for their support.

FKI Brick ProjectThe FKI Brick Project bricks will be installed along the pathway between the multipurpose room and resource centre in Term 1, 2017. We appreciate those past and present families associated with the FKI Campus (formally South Caulfield) for supporting this project and enabling a permanent record of their involvement.

Walk to SportAn eager group set out from Caulfield Park on a crisp Cup Day morning to walk and run to the Gandel Campus in plenty of time for the first race of the Primary Athletics Carnival. Thanks to Lana Fleiszig for convening another fantastic walk.

The PA could not run any of these events without the amazing assistance from our parent volunteers. Along with the support from staff across all campuses, without volunteers, PA activities simply cannot happen on their own. We are truly appreciative of everyone who has put up their hand, rolled up their sleeves, and given of their time this year.

We are always happy to see new faces, so please consider participating in some small way at one of the many activities planned for 2017. Get involved!

Parents’ Association

Introducing our Grandparents and Friends ClubAt our recent Primary School Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ mornings, the College was delighted to announce the creation of the Grandparents and Friends Club.

A launch event was held at the home of Caroline and Alan Wein on Monday 28 November and many grandparents and friends were intrigued to hear the story of the Roman Scherer Bequest to Scopus, as recounted by Marilyn Simon, Foundation Executive Director.

The College intends to hold three or four events a year to keep our Scopus grandparents, past parents and friends connected and involved. Topics will vary and also alternate between evenings and daytime.

Next year we hope to include topics such as:• Technology; and why the kids always seem

to be on a device – to be presented by our educators

• Rabbi Kennard will reflect on what 10 years at Scopus has taught him

• Looking after yourself – how to cope with the demands of kids and grandchildren, and sometimes parents as well

To join the Grandparents and Friends Club and to ensure you receive invitations, please contact Judy Prager, Alumni and Families Relations Manager at [email protected] or ph: 9834 0256.

Reunions

7

Over 70 students from the Class of 2006 gathered for their 10 year reunion, attended too by former Principal, Hilton Rubin and Rabbi Ralph Genende. Deputy Principal – Primary, Greg Hannon, took his former students on a tour of the campus, revisiting old haunts, and seeing the new learning environments in the primary and secondary schools. Thanks to Tahlia Hyams and Stephanie Komesaroff for leading the organising committee.

Ruth Kurc spearheaded the committee to stage the Class of 1996, 20 year reunion. There was a huge turnout with over 100 OCs attending. Their head of year, Carol Jensen also attended, along with former teacher Frank Carew. There were plenty of memories as they toured the corridors, with both Matron’s office and the Theatrette being a favourite of many. The committee also put together a wonderful book which will continue to provide happy memories.

Over 100 Old Collegians and former teachers gathered for the Class of 1986 reunion in September. Following a tour of the school and much reminiscing, the group was delighted to hear their level convenor, Graham Hirst, share his memories of their time at school. Thank you to the organising committee of Vicki Davis (Morris), Natalie Even-Bar (Michael), Leanne Kessel (Super), David Klein, Mark Levin, Michelle Liberman (Levy) and Melinda Tassone (Ashkenazy).

Ron Saunders led the committee for the Class of 1976, 40 year reunion, held in late November to a backdrop of 70s music. The tour led by Deputy Principal – Secondary, Sharon Stocker, who has taught some of the group members’ children, lent itself to revisiting many memories and discussions of how the school has changed.

Over 70 people celebrated the Class of 1966, 50 year reunion including some who travelled from interstate. They reminisced about their days at school against an audio-visual display, and those who have passed on were remembered by the school captains. We thank Nerrida Pohl and her committee for the work they put in to organising the event.

Co-ordinated by Ma’ayan Geffen, around 80 former students from the Class of 2011 met up for a drink in August. It was a chance to learn where their various paths have taken them since school and look ahead as well as back.

To volunteer to help organise Mount Scopus reunions in 2017 please contact Judy Prager on 9834 0256 or [email protected].

Mount Scopus appreciates the generous donations made by this year’s reunion groups, in memory of those classmates who have passed away, to the College’s Scholarship Fund to enable more children to experience and benefit from a Mount Scopus education. We also thank the team at the Helen Synman Archive Project for their ongoing support in helping the groups access memorabilia.

Co-chairs Neville Samuels and Laura Davis launched the Annual Giving Campaign just prior to Rosh Hashana. An extensive mail out, supported by a number of calling nights, reached out to the Mount Scopus Community to support bursaries by way of our Scholarship Fund. We sincerely thank the many volunteers – parents, grandparents and current students, who assisted at our calling nights and to those who have already generously pledged their support.

To add your support, please call Judy Prager on 9834 0256, email: [email protected] or you may donate securely online by going to www.givenow.com.au/mountscopuscollegeannualgiving or scan the QR code below.
