Ekiden – Japanese Relay Run

• Eki – “Location” & Den – “Deliver”

Originated from classic courier service to deliver the important

documents

• Consist of 4 runners passing the sash between each runner at

exchange point

• Team of 6 runners

• Total of 130 Teams

• Each member will run a leg of the marathon route but not necessarily of

equal distance

• The team with the fastest total finish time wins the Ekiden

Others

• Change in Order of Relay will not be allowed once finalised (30th October)

• No substituting of runners

• To qualify for Official Placings, Ekiden runners will not be allowed to run for

more than one leg of the relay. Eg. Absentees on Race Day

• However Disqualified (DQ) teams will still be allowed to run

Non - Finishers

• There is a 8-hour diversion/cut off of the marathon which is applicable to

Ekiden runners. Runner’s caught in 8-hr diversion will be deemed to have

DNF (non- finishers) hence DQ (disqualified).

• Succeeding runners that failed to “connect” with preceding teammates (due

to diversions, dropouts etc.) will be allowed to continue the run but will still

be deemed as DNF.

• Same flag off with full marathon (Orchard Road Start Point)

• 1st runner will be penned with the Sub 4 category

Race Timing Chip

• B- Tag (Attached to the Bib)

– 1 x B-Tag per runner

– Timing mats are place at the exit of each Ekiden Point to capture

the start of each leg

Official Timing Pre-requisites

• Last runner must cross the finish line with Sash and B-Tag intact.

• Sash will be removed at any point of disqualification. E.g. station

shutdown, upon/after road diversion and/or any technical

infringement.

Changeover Point Shut Down

• Ekiden changeover points will be shut down 15min from the

passing of the last runner (main race) OR arrival of rear sweeper

vehicle.

• Or when route diversion and/or road re-opening is in effect.

• The diverted runner of any changeover point will be allowed to

continue ahead of the sweeper vehicle but will be deemed to be

out of the race

• Late comers will start with general pen.

Succeeding Runners (War Memorial)

• Runners of point 2 will report to Marina Bay Floating platform.

• Runners of point 3, 4, 5, & 6 have a choice to report direct to their Ekiden

points or use shuttle service to their respective stations.

• Shuttle services TO points will operate from 3 am to 4.30am at War

Memoral Park.

• Runners will have to “register” themselves with the Ekiden Point IC on

arrival at their respective connecting points.

Baggage Deposit Facility

• All Runners are advised to avoid having baggage

• 1st runners will be able to check in their bags at the Full Marathon

baggage facility at Anguila Car Park – from 3.00am to 4.30am.

• Succeeding runners will be able to deposit their bags at War

Memorial Full Marathon Baggage Facility

• Runners who make their own way to Ekiden points will be

responsible for their own baggage.

Signage

• Signages will be placed to direct Ekiden runners to changeover

zones

- Advance warning signs - 200m and 100m

- Directional Signs - “Split” to Ekiden Point.

1• Preceding Ekiden runners will be channeled into the Transition zone

2• Succeeding Runners will stand-by in their pre-allocated pen in the Waiting

Zone

3• When the succeeding runner spots his teammate approaching, he will then

be allowed to move into the changeover zone to prepare for the transition

4•The preceding runner will hand over the team sash to the succeedingrunner within the changeover zone

5•Once the transition is completed, the preceding runner can collect his drinks at the refreshment zone

6•The preceding runner may then proceed to the shuttle service pick up point for return to Padang.

Post Race

• Finishers will be served drinks at Ekiden Points.

• Shuttle Service frequency is approximately 45 minutes.

• A looping shuttle service from 6.15am to 12.00pm will ply designated pickup

points near the race route to ferry finishers back to the Padang.
