The Spirit of Mothers

“I came so that they may have life and have it more abun-dantly.” These words of Jesus are needed today. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, opens the gate of life for us. All of us need to hear these words. Today, Mother’s Day, it is appropriate for us to listen to some women who are speaking about their rela-tionship with the Church. Let’s listen to participants from a recent workshop to better appreciate the gifts of mothers/wives/women.

Work Issues The women expressed concern about modeling Christ in the workplace. They speak of trying to see Christ in others and treating others as Christ would. Many are conscious of setting a good example and acting on their moral beliefs (My spiritual life influences my work in that I am more conscientious about how my words and actions impact others.)

Many said that their faith helps them to deal with situations at work, for example, they try to be more patient and understand-ing with difficult co-workers. Many pray about difficult situa-tions (When a crisis occurs I quickly ask God's help and the more I am able to do this, the more Christ-like I am.)

Support from the Church Women want the church to acknowledge their time con-straints. Some parish activities take place at times that are impossible for women who work outside the home (e.g., day-time bible study). Some believe that parishes and parish schools expect too much from women, especially those with younger children. After working all day, mothers do not want to come out at night or on weekends for church ministries.

Many said they would like to learn more about their faith. They suggested religious education tools and retreats and workshops for women. Others want practical services: day care, after school care, workshops to help people deal with aging parents. Women want to have a voice and to be taken seriously in the church. They want the church to acknowledge their gifts. May Jesus the Good Shepherd bring New Life to all who are shap-ing the future of God’s holy people.

LORD, PROTECT OUR TROOPS Please pray for the following members of the military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan that Our Lord protect them and all our troops around the world and keep them safe. Call the rectory to place your loved one on this prayer list.
