A MESSAGE TO ALL DOG OWNERS

‘Shap Today’ has received several requests from members of the public asking that we once again remind ALL dog owners when out walking their pets to carry a plastic bag which they can use to pick up any mess their dog makes and place it in a bin. Recent incidents have involved dogs messing on the pavement outside the school and the cafe and another particular problem area is the Back Lane leading from Wasdale to the sports hall site.

DOG DIRT POSES A HEALTH HAZARD AS WELL AS A NUISANCE

If you know of anyone who allows their dogs to foul, Eden District Council will act on any credible witness statement. Tel Eden District Council Community Dog Warden on 01768 817817 or contact Shap Parish Council 01931 716743 (Monday mornings) or 716386 at other times.

By the time you read this, Christmas will almost be upon us.

For Christians of course it‟s the time we celebrate the birth of our

saviour Jesus Christ. All our churches across the group will be

holding special services and these will be publicised well in

Advance. However, for those of other faiths and none, this time

of year is also a time of coming together with friends and family,

exchanging gifts, sharing meals and generally enjoying a few

days of holiday.

One tradition which goes back to medieval times is carol singing, something that can

be enjoyed by everyone. For a number of years locals in Shap have met for an

evening of carol singing at the Greyhound pub. A great favourite is „The twelve

days of Christmas‟ which is not really a carol, it is in fact a „catechism‟ in disguise

and it came to be written this way.

During the reign of Elizabeth I, English Catholics were being persecuted. Under

such circumstances it was difficult to teach children the Catholic faith. However, an

unknown priest found a unique way of teaching the Gospel using the theme of the

twelve days between Christmas and Epiphany, which is when the Wise Men,

according to tradition, arrived with gifts for the Christ child. The priest hid biblical

truths in the symbols he used in his carol, beginning with the words On the first day

of Christmas my true love gave to me…

The „True Love‟ referred to God the Father, and the „Me‟ represents the Christian

who receives the gifts.

The „Partridge in the Pear Tree‟, is Jesus.

But why a partridge? That‟s because mother partridges are known for feigning

injury to decoy predators from their chicks. The children were thereby taught about

Christ‟s sacrifice on our behalf.

The two turtle doves represented the Old and New Testament.

The three French hens symbolized faith, hope and love - the three great virtues we

should display as we come to know Christ as Lord through reading the Bible.

And the other symbols?

Four calling - birds represent the four Gospels.

Five golden rings - the first five books of the Old Testament known as

„the Pentateuch‟ which were thought to have been written by Moses.

Six geese a-laying - the six days of creation.

Seven swans a swimming - the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit

Eight maids a-milking - the eight Beatitudes from Matthew‟s Gospel chapter five.

Nine ladies dancing - nine choirs of angels.

Ten lords a-leaping - the Ten Commandments.

Eleven pipers piping - represent the eleven faithful apostles.

Twelve drummers drumming - the twelve articles of the Apostles Creed.

Do come and join us this year in the Greyhound. Tuesday 18th December at 7pm.

Both Beverley and I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful 2013

From the Herald 100 Years Ago

November 1912

Mostly dull and wet. First heavy snow, Thursday 28th.

All Foot & Mouth restrictions lifted by late November, last case in GB, Oct. 8th.

The Vicar of Orton preached at Shap Church Harvest Festival, Friday evening 25th

October; the event ran till Sunday 27th.

Died at Shap Granite Works, 25th October Simon Webster 64; - at Smithdown Road,

Liverpool, 14th, William Brebner, late of Shap; funeral Tuesday 2pm (age and place of

burial, not given). On 23rd „The Herald‟ added that he was a Scotsman who came to

Shap in 1872 when the Granite Works was in its golden age. He joined its monumental

masons (ie, made tombstones), and was soon their foreman, latterly he lived at Wreay

Villa, Shap. About 15 years ago he left Shap for Liverpool and began his own

tombstone company there. He was very musical, and was respected by all levels of

society in Shap and district. He leaves a widow, 2 sons, and 2 daughters.

Died on 5th November, Livingstone Dodds, Shap Abbey, 18.

December 1912

Very cold start (Saturday 30th November minus 6°F; Sunday 1st December minus 7°F),

then dull, wet, cold. Storms at Christmas.

Shap workhouse Guardians voted extra out-relief(1/-, adults; 6d, child) for Christmas

and New Year weeks. (Wigton‟s still refuse such, by 14-13 vote). They noted that

Shap School is already building on the land before receiving its title deeds for it.

Shap Football Club‟s crowd is rowdy – on Saturday 30 November, they attacked the

referee. The Westmorland Football Association ruled that week, that Shap F.C, will

host no games till 1st January.

Shap Wesleyan Sunday School Anniversary, Christmas Day, will include a public

meeting 6.30pm, with supper at end, 6d each.

Shap Football Club‟s Christmas Raffle has 43 prizes, drawn mid-month.

Various Christmas gifts for Shap Workhouse inmates received, but Col. Markham‟s

(Morland) big box of toys was sent back to him, as the House at present has no

children in it.

On Christmas Morning early, Shap Church bells rang out by century old custom. The

Vicar is ill, so Penrith‟s junior curate led the service.

Mr. And Mrs. Richard Leighton, of Harrow (Middx) but from Shap, sent 5/- each to

20 deserving poor persons in Shap as Christmas gifts. (5/- then = £20 now).

Thomas Martin and John Carson, both of Shap, labourers, were caught poaching

rabbits near Winter Tarn farm. Old offenders. (Result not stated). Caught in mid Dec.

The Granite Works‟ Storekeeper, Mr. George Grayland (25 years there) was run over

by a train when at his work, going to a truck. It almost took off his right leg. He was

put on the 3pm train to Carlisle, where the Infirmary Surgeon amputated it. He is 60.

Miss Margaret Isabella Atkinson, the youngest daughter of the late Mr. Ralph

Atkinson (he had 9 children; she was the 9th) of Nook Farm, Shap, died there on

Friday 29th November. Her brother Mr. George Atkinson went to Wet Sleddale to farm

there. She was 58.

50 Years Ago. Died at Shap, 27th December 1862, Ann Shearman, 77.

All the best for Christmas and 2013 Jeremy Godwin

Shap C of E Primary School The end of this term sees the retirement of Mrs Lois Whittaker as Head-

teacher of Shap Endowed C of E School. She has spent almost 8 years at the

school and during this time, her leadership, management skills and teaching

have led to raised standards throughout the school. She has been a great

influence and inspiration to the pupils and has given them the foundations for

their further education and success in their chosen careers. Everyone wishes

her a long and happy retirement and many thanks for her service to the

school.

Mrs Anne Maud has been appointed as the next Headteacher and will take up

her position in January.

From the moment I came to visit Shap Endowed C of E Primary School

over eight years ago, I knew that it was the place for me and I still love

being here as much today as I did when I started at Easter 2005. The

warmth and community feeling of both the school and the village is

something to really treasure and I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of

things. Thank you all for making me feel so welcome and thanks most of

all to parents past and present who have supported the school. It is a

place to be proud of with academic standards above local and national

averages, lovely children with a sense of fun and caring natures and a

truly wonderful staff and governors

I shall miss the buzz and the excitement with all the positive energy that

the children bring to school each day. I have been privileged to be part of

your children’s lives and wish them all the very best for their futures.

Best wishes Lois Whittaker

HISTORY IN HOUSES by Jean Scott-Smith

No 58 – Central Buildings & West View

Left & centre: Central Buildings. Right: West View.

Two blocks of Victorian houses built at the time when Shap was

enjoying a boom following the arrival of the railway and the

establishment of Shap Granite Works.

Central Buildings consisting of two houses, the northern one has been

a lodging house and the corner part housed the visiting bank into the

1960s, it then became a pottery, hardware shop and bakery before

reverting to domestic use.

Central Buildings feature cast concrete lintels with a diamond pattern,

and these may be found elsewhere in the village on buildings that were

built or altered in the first part of the 20th century.

Between the two blocks was a small single story building once housing

a forge used by Lancelot Gaddas to make clog caulkers and latterly as

a store for Gaddas‟ shop. This was raised to two stories and became a

bunkhouse for use by hikers on the Coast to Coast walk; it is now a

private house.

West View dates from 1875 and originally had two gardens to the

south, one for each house and accessed by the lane at the rear, the most

southerly garden, belonging to the north end house, had a new

dwelling built on it during the 1990s.

New opportunity to improve

community services/facilities

in Shap

Discussions have recently taken place that could lead to the creation

of a new community facility in Shap -

but we need your help to develop our ideas.

Cumbria County Council is disposing of the site which was

previously occupied by the sports hall.

The building currently occupied by Shap Library and used by

Shap Playgroup has high upkeep costs.

If the above sites were sold then CCC would consider making the

proceeds of sale of both available towards the cost of replacing them with

modern and enhanced community facilities. The challenge for us is that

any additional funds would need to be found by the community but the

community would take ownership of the new facilities.

This would provide the people of Shap with an opportunity to create a

new multi-purpose building providing possible space for a Library,

Computer/Internet access, Training, Playgroup, Youth.

Please note the Library Service at Shap is not currently under threat,

although all County Council services are constantly under review. The

Library Service would continue to be delivered from any new facility.

What services would you like to see provided in Shap?

This project will only be taken forward if members of the community

become involved.

Do you have the vision and enthusiasm to become involved in this

project?

Can you see the benefits that it could bring?

Please contact Shap Parish Council to register your interest as soon

as possible and by Friday 4th January at the latest.

What happens if there is no interest ?

The answer is – “Nothing”. The Sports Hall site will be disposed of but

the Library and Playgroup will still continue to operate from the

Courthouse Building.

We should at least give this opportunity consideration.

Shap Local History Society Members Evening - Monday 28th January

Shap‟s Got Talent

Once again Shap‟s Got Talent proved to be a great success and a fantastic

fundraiser for Shap Swimming Pool.

We had a varied and interesting programme to delight the crowds starting with

Thomas Mawson playing three guitar tunes before Anna Collins and Tasha B…..

got on the stage to sing to „I‟m Sexy and I know It‟. James Gee then impressed with

his improvised harmonica tunes and Zoe Crisp and Amy Hunter provided a great

end to the first half with their version of Rita Ora‟s „How We Do‟

We were very lucky to have a guest act after the interval – the fantastic Shap Street

Dance Group, run by Kelly of Studio K, showing us the latest dances they had been

working on. It made a lively addition to the night. Thank you all!

The second half got off to a strong start with Isaac Dobson playing 2 George

Formby songs on the ukulele followed by Bethany Atkinson with her soulful rendi-

tion of Adele‟s classic ……….Bev Gee (with Lucy as her glamorous assistant) then

sang a humorous song about manure which the audience enjoyed joining in with.

Connor Shepherd yet again impressed everyone with his unique freestyle dance

with some great light effects and Kian ……. danced with flair to „Boyfriend‟ by

Justin Bieber.

Thanks to this years‟ judges: Steve Gee, Glenis Furness, Kevin Pattinson and Kelly

McClelland who did a great job and a huge thanks, yet again, to John Sheppard of

Up Front Entertainment (01931 716996) for providing the music and lighting free

of charge for the event. After some very close scoring, Isaac Dobson came in 1st

place, Bethany Atkinson 2nd and Amy Hunter and Zoe Crisp a close 3rd.

Thank you to everyone who comes along each year to enjoy the show and

especially those brave enough to get up on the stage and provide the entertainment!

We raised almost £750 for the pool which is BRILLIANT!! See you next

Home Support for Families under Pressure

East Cumbria Family Support home support service matches

volunteers with families who have at least one child under 8 years

and are experiencing difficulties relating to health or disability,

emotional wellbeing or parenting. In the current climate the need

for family support is greater than ever. Volunteers visit usually for

a couple of hours each week to give practical and emotional

support. Ongoing individual and group support is given to

volunteers, and travel expenses paid.

If you are interested in helping to support families with young

children and have a few hours to spare each week, we'd love to

hear from you. We already have many fantastic volunteers doing a

wonderful job, but the demand for our service is great so we're

keen for more people to join us. Whether you are retired and

looking for a new interest, young and wanting to gain experience,

or `somewhere in between’, supporting families can help to make a

real difference in our community.

If you'd like to know more, please contact:

Sarah Craig, Eden Family Support Coordinator on 01768 862917/593102 or

Dan Nicholson Carlisle Family Support Coordinator on 01228 227348.

Some of you may have seen that I placed a notice on the notice board

outside the Market Cross stating that I had placed a plant in the cemetery

in memory of Noel and that it had been taken. This upset me immensely.

I have since spoken to others who have had plants and flowers taken.

How can anyone stoop so low as to take anything that has been placed

there in memory of a lost loved one; they are obviously heartless and

have no idea of the added grief it causes. Pauline Watson

Scouts in Shap!

On 6th November the first session of Shap Scout Group took place in the

school hall. The session was greatly enjoyed by all those who attended.

For all those young people who are too old to attend Cubs, (once you

have reached 10 ½years old) you can now come along and enjoy being a

Scout!

Shap Scouts takes place every Tuesday evening in Shap Primary School

hall and runs from 7pm – 8.30pm. Even if you have never been to Cubs or

Beavers don‟t be shy about coming to try out Scouts. There will be plenty

of indoor and outdoor activities to suit all tastes. It‟s a great opportunity

to meet others, have fun and do something completely different!

If you would like more information do not hesitate to get in touch with

Kevin Pattinson on 01931 716059 or email Geoff - [email protected]

Shap Beavers

After more than 10 years of tremendous commitment to running the

Beavers pack in Shap, Pat Mitchell will be standing down as group leader

at Easter 2013.

Pat has welcomed hundreds of young beavers into the pack over the last

decade and has provided them with fun, varied and creative programmes

to enjoy. They have completed many challenges and badges, entertained

members of the community, been an active and involved part of the wider

Scouting group in Cumbria and had lots of fun in the process.

We all thank Pat very much for the time and care she has put into making

it such a thriving pack (which always has a waiting list of new recruits!)

You will be greatly missed!

Libby Lindsay will still be assisting with the running of the Beavers pack

but we are now hoping to find some willing helpers to come forward to

ensure that the group can continue. If you have a couple of hours to spare

on a Monday, like working with young people and are enthusiastic and

keen to help, then please get in touch…..

This role could be filled by a number of people working together and does

not have to be down to just one person. If you are interested in helping

out then please contact Pat on 716944 or Anna Dutson on 716195, for

more information.

MESSY CHURCH - IN THE SCHOOL HALL Wednesday 9th January 3.15pm - 4.45pm

Crafts, Fun, Food and Worship for parents and children

Every Sunday at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle there is a service at 10.30 in Chapel, but it can only happen with the help of volunteers. There are many faithful volunteers already who come in once every 2 months (ie 6 times a year) but we are in need of many more. With larger teams we can make sure that people always work in a pair to collect patients from the ward areas. Would you be willing to help? You need to be over 16, comfortable with informal worship, prayerful, happy to sit and listen to a stranger and adaptable as anything can happen! Whole families are very welcome but children would need to stay in the Chapel area. If you are interested ring Anne Roberts, the Ecumenical Chaplain on 814090 and leave a message or email me on [email protected] Or just come along one Sunday and see what God is doing here. Thank you. Beverley
