The best onion rings everat The Derby InnMy dinin companion and I visited The Derby Inn on a Fridayafternoon to sample what the recently acquired pub had to offer twohunry ladies who like to lunch. Havin driven past the sin near

the Newlyns roundabout countless times, I was lookin forward tofinally samplin what the pub has to offer. The interior is lovinlyrustic with dark wood furniture, fireplaces and cosy blankets laidcasually over a few chairs, ready to be snuled under on a coldevenin (I do love a ood scrooch under a blanket with a lass of red).

We were shown to our table by the friendly waitress and presented witha varied menu of hearty pub classics and more astro fare, a choiceof sandwiches and specials. To start, Natalie opted for the smokedsalmon with a chive crme frache roulade served with winter veetable

crisps and a crunchy endive salad; a nice balance of textures with thesoft salmon and crunchy leaves. My tier prawn skewers were fat andjuicy, no anemic shellfish here! The sweet chilli sauce was a perfectaccompaniment in terms of heat but I would have preferred the sauceon the side as the accompanyin salad leaves were a little soy. Forthe main, I chose the 8oz rump from the specials, which was more thanample for one and very well seasoned. This was served with double hand-cooked chips (not quite triple but tasty nonetheless), salad leaves, rilledtomato and quite possibly THE BEST onion rins I have ever tasted its

the Andwells beer batter informed our waitress. Natalie also orderedfrom the specials optin for a tender venison hunch steak with creamybacon mash, kale and juniper berry. We were both impressed with thequality of the inredients and the artful presentation a fantastic astropub dish. It would be rude to leave without tryin at least one of thetemptin desserts on offer, which was a challene in itself - there aresome ood ones! Finally we areed on the peanut and honeycomb bakedcheesecake served with praline and honeycomb ice cream and it didntdisappoint. Even if you feel full (with these portions you probably will),I ure you to chillax for 5 then order one. A really sensational puddin.

Now Im not much of a beer drinker so I feel I may have cheatedthose of you expectin a review of the local Andwell brews on offer.From what Ive heard, theyre darn ood! Next time Ill be brinin myhusband and dad alon so they can et the beers in and do some justiceto the fine selection on offer. Guess Ill be the desinated driver then!

To sum up The Derby Inn: tasty, well-cooked food, impressive portions,amazin onion rins and puds to die for. If this sounds like your cup oftea then you should pay them a visit.

Caring for your fresh cut Christmas tree

50% of a trees weight is water and cut trees with roots are unlikely to thrive if planted

out, so just enjoy your cut tree by caring for it over Christmas and recycle it afterwards.

When you get home leave your tree in its wrapping and stand it in water in the cool until

youre ready to put it in its stand.

A stand should hold plenty of water (~2pints/inch of stem diameter) and the stem

should be trimmed at for tting. (Avoid trimming the sides of the stem to make the

tree t it if possible, or drilling a hole in the stem it doesnt increase water uptake!)

Fix the tree into its stand and position it in the house before removing its wrapping

its easier that way!

To help keep your tree fresh, stand it away from heat sources (res, radiators, direct

sunlight etc.) and use low heat bulb sets for decorating. Ideally display the tree in a

room that isnt too warm.

Check the water level in the stand is above the base of the stem daily and always turn

tree lights off when you go out or go to bed.
